If you want to understand one of the biggest power shifts happening in sports and branding right now, look no further than the WNBA. In this episode of Brand Slam, Steve Rosa and Joe Kayata sit down with Connecticut Sun President Jen Rizzotti to break down the rise of women's sports, and why it's not just a moment, but a movement transforming the industry. Rizzotti, a trailblazer who led UConn to its first national title in 1995 and went on to win two WNBA championships, shares her unique perspective on how the narrative around women's sports is evolving, it's a branding shift with staying power. The conversation kicks off with Jen's reflections on how cultural momentum, increased media visibility and next-gen stars like Caitlin Clark have helped transform women's basketball into a mainstream powerhouse. The trio digs into the “branding tsunami” that's hitting the WNBA, where increased attendance, stronger TV deals and bolder brand partnerships are redefining what success looks like for a professional women's league. Listeners get an insider view into how the WNBA is marketing its expansion by adding teams in Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia over the next five years, and how smart city selection and community engagement are core strategies. Jen also opens up about the Connecticut Sun's own success story, including selling out TD Garden and what Boston's market could mean for the franchise's future. Beyond the court, the episode explores the rapidly shifting dynamics of NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) in college sports and how it might have changed the game for Jen's era of players. She highlights how today's women athletes are now more empowered than ever to build their personal brands and secure meaningful partnerships. This is essential listening for any brand looking to align with purpose and momentum—because women's sports aren't just rising, they're rewriting the playbook. CBS Sports WNBA broadcaster, Jordan Kent joins Cofield & Company to recap Angel Reese's triple-double performance during the Chicago Sky's 78-66 victory over the Connecticut Sun, review the criticism toward Angel Reese over her public image in the media, and give his thoughts on Caitlin Clark's impressive, 32-point performance during the Indiana Fever's 102-88 victory over the New York Liberty.
Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese are facing different forms of pressure. Caitlin Clark has been carrying her team and has made an incredible return, recently defeating the undefeated New York Liberty. In that game, she recorded six three-pointers in the first half and finished with 32 points, 8 rebounds, and 9 assists. On the other hand, Angel Reese contributed significantly with 11 points, 13 rebounds, and 11 assists, leading her team to victory over the Connecticut Sun. It's important to note that criticism can diminish delusion and foster humility. Humility is the foundation of progress and evolution, unlike anger or bitterness. This stands in stark contrast to the BIG3 league, where Stephen Jackson, a BIG3 coach, attempted to fight a player and Dwight Howard and Lance Stephenson got into an altercation. That league is unlikely to grow because you can't build anything with anger and a victim mentality. Lastly, Jason Whitlock shares his thoughts on Stephen A. Smith, who was caught playing solitaire on his phone during the NBA Finals. An amazing show today that you won't want to miss. This season in the WNBA, there are seven new head coaches making their debut (not counting Stephanie White, who has held that title before at the Connecticut Sun). Some of those individuals and their respective teams are faring better than others. So, one month into the 2025 season, Zena, Ben, and Sabreena sit down to discuss these coaches – their programs, their backgrounds, their unique styles – and to take stock of who's meeting expectations, who's beating expectations, and who's missing them altogether. Plus, the crew discusses Ariel Atkins' comments about Angel Reese during the Chicago Sky's post-game press conference Tuesday night, following their loss to the New York Liberty – as well as Reese's on-court performance._________________Visit our YouTube page!_________________References:Despite no Caitlin Clark, Fever-Sky broadcast drew nearly 2 million viewers by Richard DeitschSky's Ariel Atkins says Angel Reese's ‘crown is heavy,' urges media to show more respect by Mark PuleoWhy is it so hard to find a WNBA coach?
