According to Jessica Brody's Save the Cat Writes a Novel, the Fun & Games beat is pivotal for laying the groundwork of your story as you move into the second act while getting your characters moving. So how to do it? And how do the Fun & Games lead to your book's all important Midpoint? To help us out, we talk to authors Annie Hartnett and Sara Shukla.Sara Shukla is an editor and writer for Cognoscenti, WBUR Boston Public Radio's ideas and opinions page, and a graduate of Grubstreet's novel incubator. Her novel, Pink Whales, a humorous take on lies, drugs and yacht clubs in an exclusive seaside New England town – think “Mean Girls,” but moms — is forthcoming from Little A. She has writing in the Los Angeles Review of Books, short humor in McSweeney's and elsewhere, and interviews in Dead Darlings. She lives in Mass. with her husband and three kids. Annie Hartnett is the author of two novels: her first was called Rabbit Cake and her new novel, Unlikely Animals, just came out in April with Random House. Along with the writer Tessa Fontaine, Annie runs bi-weekly accountability groups – workshops designed to give you community and support on your writing projects without the pressure and confusion of feedback. Annie is also the co-host of the Here to Save You podcast, a podcast about writing while parenting young children. Annie lives in Massachusetts with her husband, daughter, and their dog. How to handle multiple perspectives, voices, and even timelines in your writing and not lose your reader (or drive yourself nuts). We have two fave authors helping us out: EB Moore and Mark Guerin.EB Moore, a metal sculptor turned poet, published a chapbook, New Eden, A Legacy, then thanks to Grub Street's Novel Incubator, switched to being a novelist. Her first two books, Stones in the Road (Kirkus starred review, ‘One of the Best Books of 2015) and An Unseemly Wife are dark stories based on her family with Amish roots in Lancaster Pennsylvania. Her third novel Loose in the Bright Fantastic will come out in the fall of 2023, the story of gray-haired Maggie, who, thrilled to escape her children, embarks on a quest to reclaim independence. Moore, the mother of three, received fellowships from The MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, and The Vermont Studio Center. She lives with her partner in Scarborough Maine.Mark Guerin is a 2014 graduate of Grub Street's Novel Incubator program. He also has an MFA from Brandeis University and is a winner of an Illinois Arts Council Grant, the Mimi Steinberg Award for Playwriting and Sigma Tau Delta's Eleanor B. North Poetry Award. His debut novel, YOU CAN SEE MORE FROM UP HERE (Golden Antelope Press, 2019), was the December, 2019 selection of the Nervous Breakdown Book Club and was a semi-finalist for the 2019 Faulkner-Wisdom Novel prize. A contributor to the novelist's blog, Dead Darlings and to Writer's Digest, he is also a playwright, copywriter and journalist. Today we hear from writers Tracey Palmer and Belle Brett about how they keep writing, keep their love for their projects, and how “work” is more than just generating pagesTracey Palmer is professional writer and editor, and founder of Palmer Communications. She completed Grub Street's Novel Incubator program in 2016 and serves as co-editor and writer for the group's blog, Dead Darlings. She's won residencies at the Salty Quill Writers' Retreat in Maine and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. The Texas League of Writers named her first, unpublished novel a finalist in its manuscript competition. Her second novel, ALIVE DAY, is a character-driven, literary drama that gives voice to the often-untold story of female veterans in America. Belle Brett is a graduate of Grub Street's first Novel Incubator class. Her first book Gina in the Floating World, a gritty, and sexy coming-of-age novel set in 1981 Tokyo, was called by Kirkus reviews “a sharply observed and unforgettable debut.” It was chosen as a Sarton Book Awards finalist in contemporary fiction and a Benjamin Franklin Awards silver medalist in best new voice in fiction. When not writing or making art, Belle can be found working on her blog, “Our Slow Downsizing Story: Savoring the Journey Bit by Bit.” This is a public episode. Today, I have the pleasure of interviewing Julie Carrick Dalton. As a journalist, Julie has published more than a thousand articles in The Boston Globe, BusinessWeek, The Hollywood Reporter, Electric Literature, and other publications. She contributes to Dead Darlings, Writer Unboxed, and The Chicago Review of Books. A Tin House alum and graduate of GrubStreet’s Novel Incubator, Julie holds a master’s in literature and creative writing from Harvard Extension School. She is passionate about climate fiction and is a frequent speaker on the topic of writing fiction in the age of the climate crisis. A Mom to four kids and two dogs, Julie is an avid skier, hiker, and kayaker. She also owns a small farm in rural New Hampshire, which is the backdrop for her debut novel, Waiting for the Night Song. In this episode Julie and I discuss: How Julie initially wrote her story, the parts she omitted to get to the heart of it, and how she used Scrivener to put it all back together. What made one of Julie’s childhood friendships so significant that it inspired the plot of the story. Why Climate Fiction is an important, budding genre that Julie believes needs fostering. Plus, her #1 tip for writers. For more info and show notes: diymfa.com/342

A Dead Darlings bonus episode. Rebecca and Laurie discuss Rupi Kaur's Milk and Honey. Enjoy, and as ever, let us know what you think!
Amanda Duarte! Amanda is the creator and host of the monthly show Dead Darlings, in which artists present work they’ve had to cut or abandon, at Judson Memorial Church in New York City. She co-created the meme and movement #PussyGrabsBack, is the co-host of the new Cafe.com podcast Girl Friday, and is a regular at comedy and storytelling events throughout NYC. Amanda and I do a fair bit of ranting about American politics in this episode but we also talk about what she’s learned about the creative process from hosting Dead Darlings, how we can take tangible action towards political change, and turning off the news as an act of self-care.
In Episode 67 of the “High Regard Show,” “Uninspired,” we talk to actor/writer/comedian Becky Yamamoto about season two of her acclaimed web series, "Uninspired," which premieres on Friday, Jan. 13. Becky tells us what it was like filming the first season, what the future holds for the series and what she would be doing if she wasn't a comedian. Funny how her and Tom have the same dream — could there be a partnership in their future? There was also a long-winded story about inappropriate holiday party behavior and a behind-the-scenes look at Nikki's technology struggles, and her struggle is real, folks! In “Roly Poly Roarty,” Tom discusses how his three-months post-op doctors visit went. Spoiler alert: It was way better than expected. We also talk about what's keeping the extra skin tight and the not-so-great customer service of the 5K runners app for iPhone and the Apple Watch. Boy, you guys let him down! Also, we want to give a shoutout to the January installment of #PussyGrabsBack founder Amanda Duarte's "Dead Darlings" salon, which takes place on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 8 p.m. at Judson Memorial Church at 65 Washington Square South in the Village. This month's theme is, fittingly, "Freedom," and Dylan Marron, Erin Gloria Ryan, Rick Herron and Molly Pope will highlight a piece of their work that died on the cutting room floor. Proceeds benefit the North Carolina NAACP. We find out why he left a successful career in comedy to destress himself for ten years and what made him come back. Besides performing standup regularly, he teaches playwriting to youth and knows qi gong, a Chinese energy cultivation exercise. He also went to India before Nimesh ever did. What does that say about Nimesh? Shonali and Jeffrey are chicken pox nose scar twins. Shonali has some frightening news for you. Sorry to bum you out. Our second guest is Amanda Duarte, a writer, performer, comedian and is responsible (along with her new friend - NYTimes writer, Jessica Bennet who created the art) for starting the viral sensation #PussyGrabsBack. Sales proceeds of her PGB shirts on spreadshirt.com go to the Rape and Incest Network. Amanda is not scared of ghosts, but she does share what she is scared of. Go see her monthly show Dead Darlings at Judson Memorial Church. Today's #GetItOffYourChest guest is former WDEK episode 13 guest and Shonali's former personal trainer, Reno Villacis. Here from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, our special musical guest is a musician, painter and writer named Tyson Meade. Tyson and Shonali have infectious laughs that could get on Nimesh' nerves. Tyson has a similar story to Jeffrey Joseph's, in that he quit music for 10 years and has recently rediscovered himself as a musician. In his early years as a musician, he influenced artists like Kurt Cobain, Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips and Billy Corgan. In between those years and now, Meade ran a boarding school in China and taught electricians to learn English in Saudi Arabia. He rediscovered music while helping a prodigal violin player student in China. The end result is a new solo album to be released by him in February, and one released last year titled "Tomorrow In Progress." Enjoy him hear singing "Tiniest of Guys" and "She's Gone Mad." Enjoy and next month Christian will return for our November episode.
