This week's conversation was with the one and only, Órla McGovern. A lengthy introduction is needed for this multitalented individual. She is an imaginative storyteller, a gifted actress, a sharp playwright, a dedicated teacher, a poetic author, and an entertaining performer. Órla allows us into her world of imagination and reveals how the Arts allow her to express herself and find her truth. She is a creative, progressive person who delves into hot topics such as blackcurrant in Guinness, her draw towards bodies of water and taking on a voice during the act of telling a story. Not only do we meet Órla in this week's episode, but we also meet her hilarious separate entity named Mrs. Nelly Murphy, who has been known to be successful in storytelling competitions. Órla has written folktales for children and is the founder of Moth and Butterfly Stories, a monthly storytelling and improvisation night in Co. Galway, as well as an annual International storytelling festival. This episode is not to be missed - an endearing chat with an Irish legend. Go raibh míle maith agat, a chara - Thank you friend! Our guest this week is Roxy Dunn, whose debut novel As Young As This is a meticulous examination of the lives and loves of young women today. Told, strikingly, in the second person, it is structured by the the succession of first boys, then men in the protagonist Margot's life, and populated by dysfunctional friends and a wisecracking, but deeply caring family. As Young As This is as witty as it is sincere, as revealing as it is touching. Pandora Sykes said that “with glorious attention to detail and emotional fluency, Dunn charts the ways in which we are built and broken by love” while Daisy Buchanan called As Young As This 'Raw, funny and beautiful” adding that it's a “really gorgeously observed novel about youth and womanhood”Buy As Young As This: https://www.shakespeareandcompany.com/books/as-young-as-this*Roxy Dunn is a Writer/Performer and graduate of the BBC Comedy Writersroom. Influenced by growing up in Queens, her time as a downtown New York slam poet, and more, Sarah is known for her multi-character, one-person shows, the Broadway hit Bridge + Tunnel, and the critically-acclaimed play, Sell/Buy/Date. She's given multiple TED Talks, performed for the Obama's, and at the World Economic Forum. She recently launched social justice-focused, Foment Productions, and recently acted in Broad City, Noah Baumbach's Oscar-winning film Marriage Story, and in Julie Delpy's series for Netflix, On The Verge. On the podcast Sarah discusses deepening the alignment in her values, and working with artists whom she truly believes in. Given the much deserved title of "master' of her genre by none other than The New York Times, Sarah just made her debut as film director, with her documentary Sell/Buy/Date, in which she, of course, also stars...as herself, and as a handful of the diverse signature characters she's known for. On episode 125 of the podcast we get into ALL of it. In a delicate symphony of self expression, self exploration, cultural and individual life experience, Sell/Buy/Date doc, an 'Unorthodoc' , as she calls it, dances between deeply honest and organic discussions with those in and around the sex industry, intimate friendships with familiar faces like Ilana Glazer, Rosario Dawson, and Bryan Cranston, the Greek-chorus commentary and comedy of her characters, and a very personal peek offstage and into Sarah's own life and family. We talk about the night that Sell/Buy/Date the play went from being performed in her living room to its very first audience, the major backlash that turned what would have been her movie into an exploratory documentary, how exactly her hybrid film was made, how she voices her characters, how and when they took shape, and the way in which she introduces new ones...and doesn't. We discuss the origins of her activism, how she prepares for her multifaceted performance style, being an 'HSP', and how putting self care first helps her art. Sarah and Tamara share stories about the United Nations International School, where they met as students, what makes it such a unique place, and how it's informed a lot of Sarah's work, as an artist and as an activist. Be prepared to laugh! You'll hear Sarah share her thoughts and her story in at least seven other accents, and as at least seven other people. We talk about what stokes her drive to give back, teaching poetry on Rikers Island, and that time she was the first artist ever to sue the FCC for censorship. In this episode I chat to Poet, Writer, Performer and Educator Fionna Inward Allen.I first met Fee around six years ago at a mutual friend's picnic. As soon as she flashed her stellar smile, I knew I wanted to talk to her. And talk we did, all afternoon. We have since kept in touch via social media and on the 10th of September we finally met again when Fee performed a few of her beautiful poems at the podcast live event. Her words moved the audience between both tears and laughter. In our chat for the podcast we covered Fee's life growing up feeling torn between writing and performing, her vast inner world as a child, creativity as a means of escape, especially when you are bound to one physical place, her time working at the BBC and her self imposed fifteen year writing apprenticeship in the caravan she bought for this sole purpose, rebuilding herself after having her son and then subsequently becoming a single parent. And of course, so much more.Welcome to my chat with the delightfully gorgeous Fionna Inward Allen.Warning, this episode contains swearing and mentions of eating disorders and child abuse. You can find Fee online at fionnainwardallen.com and on instagram @fionna_inward_allenThank you to Right Hand House for sponsoring this episode. Sarah is making her directorial debut when her new film Sell/Buy/Date - will be releasing in theaters in LA on October 14th, NYC on October 21st, and streaming in November on Amazon Prime.  Details: Through interviews and monologues, the film poses the question: How can we as a society have a healthy relationship to sex, power, race and our economy, without exploitation or stigma? Sell/Buy/Date creatively tackles the complex subject of the sex industry and expands upon Jones' acclaimed 2016 off-Broadway solo production of the same name. Jones plays herself, along with four different onscreen characters including a young college student and an 80-something grandmother.  From Los Angeles to Vegas and all the way to New York City, Jones and her many characters navigate an issue that is ever prevalent but rarely spoken about. Unafraid to ask difficult questions, she explores the industry's relationship with race, power and economics along with her own connection to it. Jones probes the subject matter with candor as she takes viewers on a roller-coaster journey full of humor and emotion, while exposing truth and tragedy within the industry.

She's guided thousands of aspiring to professional writers and actors, as well as Organizations, Business Owners, Coaches and Thought Leaders to UNCOVER THEIR STORY GOLD. Terrie is a passionate story advocate, because stories are not only the way we understand ourselves, each other and the world, but the most effective way to profoundly connect, learn, inspire and make an impact. She knows that when people are given encouragement and a safe, nurturing space, they're able access their wild creativity and develop powerful, authentic stories. She also understands the fears, doubts and the inner-critic that get in the way. Terrie would get paralyzed with fear, self-loathing and perfectionism whenever she had to write a report for school, and then would eat so many donuts she thought she would die. It wasn't until she met a playwrighting teacher years later, who took her under his wing and became her Annie Sullivan at the water-pump, helping her to get what was in her head onto paper, that she discovered she could write. This led to the biggest shock of her life-- being accepted into a graduate writing program, getting straight A's and winning the Jerome Lawrence Playwriting award. It occurred to me this is what I did when I was little when I wrote songs and performed on my mum's guitar. Then the idea came to me to record an album and present it as a theatre show and call it Mum's Guitar in honour of that first creative spark. Also, it is that old "method actor" thing where you create the role by actually experiencing and learning the world of the character being portrayed. "After working in the studio for around four months with Music Producer Sam Lench and recording over twenty songs, I then went into developmental rehearsals with Paulo Castro to devise a show based on the music album. Through improvisations and exploration of text a narrative was formed."

Chatting with writer, performer, celebrity journalist and podcast host Dennis Hensley. I've known Dennis for years. He's the guy you want to sit next to at a party because he's not only smart but always ready with an authentically witty line. Dennis is a master of so many fields. From his popular podcast, 'Dennis Anyone?' (www.dennisanyone.net) to his very cool 'Lifecast' project where he interviews people and creates a podcast about their life - ergo, a 'Lifecast.' (www.getalifecast.com) There are his many TV appearances on shows like Logo's "Gay For Play" game show starring RuPaul, "Fashion Police," and "The Big Gay Sketch Show." He's a frequent guest host on Sirius XM and the author of several novels. And he recently developed a new party game called "You Don't Know My Life" with Jeb Havens. (www.YouDontKnowMyLife.com) We have wanted to interview each other for a long time, and so finally, here we are. This episode turned into a 'battle of the interviewers' as we both kept trying to ask the other questions about their lives and projects. I really had fun here.

This time I talk creativity with someone Stephen Fry has described as funny, frank, intelligent & enchantingly entertaining: Tourette's Hero Jess Thom. Jess and I cover a lot of ground … from the neurodiversity movement, and how Jess ended up in the only seat in the house she wouldn't be asked to leave - on the stage; to the crazy language generating machine that is Tourette's.You can find out more about Jess and what she's up to, as well as read her brilliant blog at www.touretteshero.com.I think I can safely say that this is the probably going to be the only ever episode of The Wind Thieved Hat to finish with the words ‘fuck a goat'.Enjoy.
