She was a recipient of The Fellowship of Southern Writers' Hillsdale Prize for Excellence in Fiction and the Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers' Award, and her work has appeared in several literary publications, including The Best American Mystery Stories, New Stories from the South, and Tin House magazine, in addition to two of her own short story collections and two novels. In the 2010s, while teaching at a residency in a highly wooded part of Tenessee, Jones was inspired to write a horror story about an insidious species of ticks that carry a horrifying deadly disease. That story became a novel, rooted in the climate crisis, in which Jones explored not just the horror of the ticks themselves, but how the inequities baked into our existing socioeconomic system might look in the face of a serious existential threat.

Author R.B. Kelly discusses her debut sci fi novel, Edge of Heaven, and its sequel, On the Brink. Rachael began the first draft of the story when she was only fifteen years old. Always a fan of Terry Pratchett, Rachael loves his notion of inspiration particles sleeting through the universe. What was her own inspiration particle for these books? An imaginary vision of a city built on top of another city. A long-time fan of speculative fiction and being deeply impressed by the movie, Blade Runner, Rachael set about trying to write the story surrounding that city on top of a city. Edge of Heaven went through too many iterations for Rachael to count, but she always knew it was the story she was meant to write.

Creating optimistic and realistic narratives about the future is essential for inspiring collective action against climate change. In this episode, we meet Steve Willis, an author and innovator, who discusses his climate fiction novel "Fairhaven," which explores solutions to pressing environmental challenges. Steve emphasizes the need for large-scale projects to address the climate crisis and highlights the potential for industries traditionally seen as part of the problem, like oil and gas, to contribute to the solution. The conversation delves into the importance of fostering dialogue between the traditional energy sector and renewable solutions, as well as the role of storytelling in shaping a compelling vision for the future. Takeaways: Creating optimistic and realistic narratives about the future can inspire collective action. The oil and gas industry must adapt to meet climate challenges and leverage their resources. The importance of engaging diverse voices in the dialogue about climate solutions cannot be understated. Despair in the face of climate change leads to inaction; hope can ignite progress. We need multi-million dollar projects to combat climate change at the necessary scale. Fiction can be a powerful tool to visualize and communicate potential climate solutions. In this episode, We explore the fascinating world of J.G. Ballard's provocative works, what might later be known as Climate Fiction, written mostly last century. From his early novel "The Drowned World" to the controversial "Crash," we delve into how Ballard's dystopian visions have shaped the genre. We feature insights from a PBS show Hot Mess, a short BBC film Ballard appeared in 1973 exploring his experimental novel of linked short stories called “The Atrocity Exhibition,” and a 2006 South Bank Show interview. We discuss the psychological and societal impacts of Climate Fiction, and how it might inspire change in an era of environmental urgency. First we begin with a 2019 clip from Hot Mess from PBS, featuring Lindsay Ellis, of It's Lit, and Amy Brady, the editor-in-chief of The Chicago Review of Books. Hot Mess | The Rise of Climate Fiction feat. Lindsay Ellis & Amy Brady | Episode 35 | PBS https://www.pbs.org/video/the-rise-of-climate-fiction-feat-lindsay-ellis-amy-brady-2s2sxh/ The Atrocity Exhibition is J.G. Ballard's instruction manual on how to disrupt mass media and recontextualize technology in a dystopian landscape overrun with industrial waste and technological white noise. The excerpt is from a 1973 BBC film directed by Harely Cokliss and features Ballard talking about car crash fetishism and the response to the bleak modern landscapes dominated by industrial monotony and the irrational violence of the technology-infused world which would coalesce into his controversial novel Crash, published in 1973. https://youtu.be/QRxpZ142lkI?si=gh5FjzV9BrUvs-r0 The next clip is a 2006 interview of JG Ballard by Melvyn Bragg on the South Bank Show, which also features prominent British authors Will Self, Iain Sinclair, and Martin Amis. https://youtu.be/le0tW1y609w?si=2DeFYxI-wqGe-Cu8 For an extended interview and other benefits, become an EcoJustice Radio patron at https://www.patreon.com/ecojusticeradio Resources/Articles: https://wilderutopia.com/performance/literary/j-g-ballard-atrocity-exhibition-modernist-motorcar-dystopia/ James Graham Ballard who lived between 1930 and 2009 was an English novelist and short-story writer known for psychologically provocative works that explore relations between human psychology, technology, sex and mass media. Ballard's original climate fiction work from 1962 was the post-apocalyptic New Wave science fiction novel The Drowned World. He followed with the controversial 1970 short-story collection The Atrocity Exhibition, which includes the 1968 story "Why I Want to F- Ronald Reagan", and later the 1973 novel Crash (1973), a story about car-crash fetishists. In 1984, Ballard won broad critical recognition for the war novel Empire of the Sun, a semi-autobiographical story of the experiences of a British boy during the Japanese occupation of Shanghai;[4] three years later, the American film director Steven Spielberg adapted the novel into a film of the same name. From the distinct nature of the literary fiction of J. G. Ballard arose the adjective Ballardian, defined as: "resembling or suggestive of dystopian modernity, bleak man-made landscapes, and the psychological effects of technological, social or environmental developments." Episode 394 - Bill Wittur - Climate Fiction, A New Category for ReadersEXTINCTION EVENT is a full-length fiction novel set in the present day that belongs in the speculative fiction / dystopian category. Story SynopsisThe main character – known only as LP – tries to reinvent himself by going back to school. With some help from his recording instructor and his friends, he discovers a mystery surrounding different ‘glitches' heard with analog versus digital recordings of popular songs. He investigates further to discover an important figure from his past who built an Artificial Intelligence (AI) platform called GAIA which is being used to spread false stories to the public but to also change the fate of the planet and its inhabitants.Mythology ‘Easter Eggs'This story is loaded with Easter Eggs related to different mythological sources and resources. Examples include:Sylvie Hunter, a key character that embodies traits related to ArtemisJohn Atman, the all-knowing sageThe MusesAesop's Fables and other animal talesPrometheus and the Creation MythAnd much, much moreClimate Fiction: A New Category for ReadersThis is a climate fiction, or ‘cli-fi' story. As events transpire, the reader is brought into our world in environmental crises. There are several overlapping themes that are explored in Extinction Event, including:AI electricity and water use and how it will soon strangle all of us given the current increases in demand for different AI tools. The ‘sixth extinction' that many scientists anticipate will start to close in on us, as all species of creatures on Earth face extinction because of human abuse of the planet.Different economic and political arguments surrounding resource-based capitalism and why our pace of consumption is unsustainable.Exploring the beauty of the different animal kingdoms that surround us and why they're worth preserving.Reviews5/5: Whether “AI phobic” or not … this book will make you thinkBill Wittur's first novel is a timely, creative and fast paced read. Imagine a world where an AI platform is asked to save the planet … and does (unfortunately for some of those who trained it). Drawing inspiration from current events and his own varied work experiences, Wittur plays with the “what if” scenarios and creates an AI heroine, GAIA, her evil taskmasters and the brilliant, committed engineer who unleashes a whole new kind of justice on earth and its inhabitants. A fun read!5/5: Highly recommended!!Was an excellent read! Great story and character development. It was a hard book to put down. On a side note, I also dug all the music references throughout. This week the tables are turned and Maddy Harland, editor of Permaculture Magazine interviews Manda about her new 'seismic' Mytho-Political thriller, Any Human Power, which will be available from 30th May. "From a bestselling storyteller who brings together myths and speculative futures with a radical compassion, comes the story of a family at the heart of a political crisis and the ensuing uprising of a disenfranchised generation. A family that harnesses the skills and stories needed for real change, if they can choose the right path, before it is too late …As Lan lies dying, she makes a promise that binds her long into the Beyond. Fifteen years later, her teenage granddaughter, Kaitlyn, triggers an international storm of outrage that unleashes the rage of a whole betrayed generation. For one shining fragment of time, the world is with her. But then the backlash begins and soon she and those closest to her find themselves facing the wrath of the old establishment, who will use every dirty trick in the book to fight them off.Watching over the growing chaos is Lan, who taught them all to think independently, approach power sceptically and dream with clear intent. She knows more than one generation's hopes are on the line. Nothing less than the future of humanity stands in the balance.Grand in scope, rich in courageous characters who breathe new life into ancient wisdom, here is a dream of a better future: a world we'd be proud to leave to our children and their children and on, generations down the line.‘A polemical thriller like no other, an absorbing manifesto to change the world. It constantly surprises. Manda Scott's characters play havoc with your emotions, her narrative keeps you turning the pages, and her ideas might just change your life.'ANDREW TAYLOR, AUTHOR OF THE SHADOWS OF LONDON ‘The critical task in present times is to find a way out of the world-destroying political status quo. To make that happen we first have to imagine how it could happen. In Any Human Power, Manda Scott uses her own supreme imaginative powers as a novel is t to open windows into the flow of possibilities.'CHRIS SMAJE, AUTHOR OF A SMALL FARM FUTURE ‘This book brilliantly depicts the frightening reality facing those who mobilise against a violent global establishment. Author Stephen Markley opens the doors to The Deluge, his ground-breaking, world-changing Climate/MetaCrisis thriller- 900 pages that absolutely squarely rips into the current system in all its deficiencies - and offers a route through to a future that might work. This week's guest is someone who has mapped out a possible future in a depth and detail that leaves me awestruck. Stephen Markley's first published novel Ohio, was described as a wild, angry, and devastating masterpiece of a book. Stephen King called it this generation's Grapes of Wrath and there is no doubt that it's a beautifully written, lyrical, devastating debut. But it turns out Ohio was the book he wrote in the midst of writing the novel we're going to talk about today. The Deluge is nine hundred pages of astonishing depth and breadth that takes as its topic the meta-crisis. It's an excoriating evisceration of neoliberalism and the thousands of small acts of mendacity or cowardice or sheer self-absorption that have got us to the edge of the cliff. It's an examination of just how close we are, and a portrayal of how utterly catastrophic will be the impacts if we step over. It's a deeply political book, but at heart it's also incredibly humane, with a cast of characters that spreads across contemporary American life in ways that I have rarely, if ever, encountered. I read the book and connected with Stephen because Rupert Read, who was with us last week, called me up and said 'This is a glorious Thrutopian novel, you have to read it.' And there were times when I completely did not believe him. But he's right. it's big. It requires huge dedication. But it's well, well worth the investment in terms of the doors it opens - and the many ways it shows us how we might fail before we finally succeed. Stephen's website https://www.stephenmarkley.com/The Deluge https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/the-deluge-stephen-markley/7544942?ean=9781982123109

How does the genre allow us to explore uncomfortable climate scenarios, including those to do with heat death and direct action? There have been many calls to improve the communication of scientists to the general public in hopes it will help people understand the severity of the various global threats we face. A key component to such communication comes from art and literature. Even further, the humanities help us think about the type of future and culture we want to have given the information that science brings us. A lot of sci-fi writing focused on climate is high literary fiction, which means it's filled with allusion and often difficult to understand. So, why don't authors take on climate fiction as a serialized genre like detective novels, zombie books or erotica? Is there a way to make climate fiction more playful without making light of climate change as a global issue? Daniel Backer is the novelist and literature educator behind Off the Wall Novels and the author of Abraham and Lionel Lancet and the Right Vibe. On this episode of Reversing Climate Change, Daniel joins Ross to explore postmodern and metamodern literature, explaining the postmodern idea that myths guide our decision-making but also make us human. Daniel helps us make sense of Thomas Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49, discussing how it plays on the detective genre and why we find comfort in the familiarity of literary conventions.
