How to Handle the Post Interview Wait and Other Questions
The idea of life–especially intelligent life–on other planets has long captured the contemporary imagination. Despite the fact that there is no solid scientific evidence suggesting the existence of alien life forms, speculation about extraterrestrial activity inspires movies, television, novels, and popular music. But is there a particular Catholic view on aliens? Does the church have an official teaching about extraterrestrial beings? And, if alien life is out there, what does this mean for Catholic theology about life on Earth, original sin, and salvation? In this episode of Glad You Asked, hosts Emily Sanna and Rebecca Bratten-Weiss speak with Brother Guy Consolmagno, director of the Vatican Observatory and president of the Vatican Observatory Foundation, about the scientific and theological issues surrounding the question of intelligent life on other planets and the likelihood of ever making contact with alien beings. Brother Guy has written extensively on science and religion for both peer-reviewed publications and for popular audiences, including his 2014 book, Would You Baptize an Extraterrestrial? ...and Other Questions from the Astronomers' In-box at the Vatican Observatory (Image). Warning: Explicit Conversations About Politics, Culture, & Sexuality We start with the Good News: OnlyFans surrenders! It may not last, but it's a victory for sex workers. Also Good News: U.S. troops are finally leaving Afghanistan! Though ending a misbegotten Perma-War is like trying to straighten out a bad perm; it's a mess. Biden is no genius, but Dubya and the Dick are the big adult babies who made this mess. Also Carter arming the muhajideen against Soviet Russia kickstarted it 40 years ago, around the time I was in Afghanistan. So, we #GoBonobos for pulling out now, better late and messy than never and messier! Other Questions of the Night include: Will the U.S. finally learn its lesson (the one about not invading other countries that we didn't learn in Vietnam)? Are suicide bombers the ISIS version of ammosexual incels? What about the no-vax, no-mask folks who willfully spread Covid? What's religion got to do with it? Why is censorship almost always bad for society, not to mention ineffective? Why do we need sex education? Why are some people identifying as “asexual”? What's better—flipflop politics or flipflop shoes? How can we get the billionaires to pay their fair share? Are we communists? Am I cosplaying Lady Dimitrescu Mods from Resident Evil Village? Is she cosplaying me? What is Generation Q? Is humanity going as bananas as it seems like we're going—or does the media just emphasize the crazy for clickbait? Or is the media driving us bananas? Don't go bananas; go bonobos! Listen and learn the Bonobo Way of peace through pleasure in all kinds of weather… and this is some crazy weather… Climate Change is real, and the Coronapocalypse is in the thick of it. We also talk about some of the wild shows and orgiastic bacchanals of Bonoboville's pre-pandemic past, including this week's amazing, orgasmic throwback, Labia Day 2018 featuring “Most Bonobo” and “Most Sapiosexual” SUZY award winner Riley Reyes and adorable Eva Yi. Picard: Countdown Comics, with Literary Treks. The first stories related to Star Trek: Picard that were released were not seen on screen, but instead were part of a three-issue comic series called Star Trek: Picard: Countdown. Two comic issues came out before Star Trek: Picard premiered in January 2020 and gave readers their first glimpse into the world of a new series. A third issue came out shortly after the first episode, “Remembrance.” Now that we've seen the entirety Picard Season 1, how do the comics inform and add to the show? In this episode of The Line, hosts Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi, Brandon-Shea Mutala, and Justin Oser are joined by Bruce Gibson and Dan Gunther of Literary Treks to discuss the Star Trek: Picard: Countdown comic trilogy. We talk about the differences in the values held by the Romulans and the Federation, how the comics approach a story that is a prequel to the show, whether Starfleet was wrong to end the Romulan rescue mission, and more. Why are questions important? Your brain is a computer and will look for the answer you ask it. What does this make possible? Big Leap Questions Am I willing to increase the amount of time each day that I feel good inside An inner sense of well being An I willing to increase the amount of time my whole life goes well Work relationships Am I willing to feel good and have my life go well all the time? If you argue your limitations you get to keep them. Stop fighting to keep your limitations What's the payoff for limitations? Limiting beliefs are erroneous but for your protections Are you willing to take the big leap in love money and creative contributions How much love and abundance are you willing to allow? How are you getting in your own way? Will you commit to living in your zone of genius all the time Zone of Genius What do I most love to do? What do I do that doesn't seem like work? What is my unique ability Other Questions to ask Why is this problem important for me to face? Why is this problem so excellent? What is the best use of my time? Does this feeling serve me? How does this project advance my goals? What am I grateful for? What am I going to accomplish today? What is your greatest asset? Are you willing to forgive yourself? Are you willing to laugh at your mistakes? Why am I doing what I am doing?
The wise and beloved Vatican astronomer Father George Coyne died last week. Like most of the Vatican astronomers across history, he was a Jesuit. More than 30 objects on the moon are named after the Jesuits who mapped it, and ten Jesuits in history have had asteroids named after them. Father Coyne was one of the few with this distinction, alongside his friend and fellow Vatican astronomer Brother Guy Consolmagno. In a conversation filled with laughter, we experience a spacious way to approach life, faith, and the universe.Father George Coyne was the Director of the Vatican Astronomical Observatory from 1978 to 2006 and author of the book Wayfarers in the Cosmos: The Human Quest for Meaning. He died on February 11, 2020, at the age of 87.Brother Guy Consolmagno was appointed Director of the Vatican Astronomical Observatory by Pope Francis in 2015. Today’s topic is Amazon agencies, which is any person or entity that handles other people’s Amazon business or their problems. We discuss which brands we normally see use the agency. We give examples of businesses that have benefited from using an agency. We talk about questions you should ask an Amazon agency, including pricing, comprehensive/selective management, and services. We go more in depth about payment, talking about the pros and cons of both commission based and flat fees. We talk about factors to consider when determining length of contract. We also emphasize the importance of determining if agencies are stable and realistic, or if they overpromise. We talk about the challenges and risks of becoming an agency for other companies or brands. We talk about other factors to consider when considering third party help. -Amazon Agencies: What to Expect From Using/Joining 1:01-Questions to Ask an Agency 10:03-Challenges in this Model; Other Questions 17:39“What is the price? Self-described dead body enthusiast and corpse geek, Caitlin Doughty joins us this week for a fascinating discussion about all things death. Doughty is quite possibly the most famous mortician on the internet, and her new book Will my Cat Eat my Eyeballs? and Other Questions from Tiny Mortals about Death, is a light-hearted but honest discussion of things many people would like to know about death, but are afraid to ask (lucky for us, kids are not afraid to ask). Caitlin recounts her own earliest experiences with death, and whether or not she believes they had any impact on her choice of a profession. She talks about some of the hardest things about her job as a mortician—it's probably not what you'd think—and also describes some of the surprising benefits on her own life about working so closely with death. Bonus: she answers a few of her young interlocutors' questions, such as: What happens if you die on a plane? For more fascinating facts about death, make sure to pick up a copy of her book. In addition, visit her website The Order of the Good Death, a non-profit death acceptance organization that aims to help people overcome their fear of death, and be sure to check out her web series, Ask a Mortician on YouTube. Who thought it would be a good idea to make a movie about soccer executives? Apparently Sepp Blatter and the brilliant minds at FIFA. Learn the exciting story of how coca cola and Adidas became sponsors of FIFA! Dazzle at a group of drunk Europeans try to get the evil British to let them make up the rules and regulations of Soccer. Marvel at Gerard Depardieu's buttnose! A movie where producer Sepp Blatter makes himself a hero that is staunchly anti corruption which came out the same week as the 2015 FIFA corruption scandal which eventually forced him to resign. Other Questions we had: Why does everyone look like a Dick Tracy Villain? Can girls play soccer? How did they get actors like Tim Roth, Sam Neill, and Gerard Depardieu? I guess I'd sell out for a million dollars.
