Episode 132: Trust & Fear Talking about fiction is our JAWN slushies. Join us as we discuss Terry Dubow's "The Q," a short story that sounds like it wants to be a crime novel: a murderer gets out of jail and asks to stay with his pen pal. The surprise is that the piece is also a gentle story of male friendship and compassion. We're drawn to the story's ability to showcase the odd-ball sincerity of letter writing, and the strange, retro experience of having to wait for a response. Can you imagine? Putting a letter in a mailbox? Waiting for a reply that has to make its way to you through actual space and time? Does anyone remember licking a stamp? We're here for it, Terry Dubow. Tell us a story. At the table: Kathleen Volk Miller, Marion Wrenn, Jason Schneiderman, Samantha Neugebauer, Dagne Forrest, Lisa Zerkle, Divina Boko, Jess Fielo (sound engineer) Born outside of Los Angeles, Terry spent most of his adult life in the great city of Cleveland, Ohio. He is now in the middle of a planned mid-life crisis and living with his wife of 30 years in Marin County, California. While he works at a school that sits directly across from San Quentin, the origin of “The Q" comes directly from his uncle-in-law, Gary Weske, who 20 years ago told a version of it that stuck in Terry's head ever since. Thanks, Gary! Over the last years, Terry has published more than 25 stories, most recently in The Meadow (upcoming), Litro, Clockhouse, and The New Ohio Review, which nominated his story “Bandits” for the Best of the Net. His frustratingly unpublished novels are represented by Lisa Grubka at the United Talent Agency.

Martin Nathan and Tabitha Potts interview writer Miki Lentin about his new novel Winter Sun, published by Afsana Press in 2024. A nine-day winter break in Tenerife. Nothing is quite good enough. A son tries in vain to ask his ailing, elderly Irish Jewish father questions about their past before it is too late. The absurdity and hilarity of family holidays in the sun are brought to life in this sharp and fiercely honest novel that crosses borders, carrying the reader on a ride of childhood pain, a search for identity, and growth. Miki talks about auto-fiction, package holidays, memory and meals in this fascinating interview. Miki Lentin took up writing while travelling the world with his family a few years ago. Miki completed an MA in Creative Writing at Birkbeck in 2020, and was a finalist in the 2020 Irish Novel Fair for his first book, Winter Sun. Miki has been placed highly in competitions including Fish Publishing Short Memoir Prize, Brick Lane Bookshop Short Story Award, and Leicester Writes, and has been published in Litro, Storgy, Story Radio, MIR amongst others. In 2022 he brought out a collection of short stories with Afsana Press, Inner Core, that cover death, anxiety, masculinity, family and children and social good. The book was called 'consistently enthralling... funny, moving and disturbing in equal measure' by Francis Gilbert, author of I'm a Teacher Get Me Out of Here. Miki volunteers with refugee charity Breaking Barriers and with foodKIND in Greece, and dreams of one day running a café again. Martin Nathan produced this episode. Martin Nathan's short fiction and poetry has appeared in a range of journals and his novel – A Place of Safety is published by Salt Publishing. His dramatic writing has been shortlisted for the Nick Darke award and the Woodward International Prize.

Episode 107: Using fiction as a way to educate, heal and connect This is an interview on using fiction as a way to educate, heal and connect. I absolutely loved recording this episode and I hope you love the stories that Jolene shares with us. From Jolene: In my stories I've focused on the effects of fertility on women, the men who care for them, and small town culture around issues of fertility. In my stories, I've chosen to use specific and medical jargon and terms relating to, specifically, women's health issues to bring awareness. I've written stories about infertility, miscarriage, pregnancy, high-risk pregnancy, pre-term labor, endometriosis, mental health issues, PTSD, post-natal PTSD. I've written at least one story (“You Four Are the One”) using a technique in therapy treatment for people with PTSD called RECON (reconsolidation therapy) by Courtney Armstrong. I'm hoping our talk will inspire others to write their own fictional (or nonfiction) stories of fertility and women's health issues. I'm hoping they'll buy SIDLE CREEK and they'll find they're not alone. Jolene McIlwain's work has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and appears in numerous online and print literary journals including West Branch, Florida Review, Cincinnati Review, CRAFT, Smokelong Quarterly, New Orleans Review, LITRO, and more. Her work was included in 2019's Best Small Fictions Anthology and named finalist for 2018's Best of the Net, Glimmer Train's and River Styx's contests, and semifinalist in Nimrod's Katherine Anne Porter Prize and two American Short Fictions contests. She's received a Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council grant, the Georgia Court Chautauqua faculty scholarship, and Tinker Mountain's merit scholarship. She's taught literary theory/analysis at Duquesne and Chatham Universities, and she worked as a radiologic technologist before attending college (BS English, minor in sculpture, MA Literature). She was born, raised, and currently lives in a small town in the Appalachian plateau of Western Pennsylvania. Her debut, SIDLE CREEK, out with Melville House this spring, received a starred review from Publishers Weekly and Shelf Awareness calls it a “riveting debut collection” and “a rare gem, a compelling blend of nature and humanity perfect for fans of Barbara Kingsolver's Prodigal Summer and Daisy Johnson's Fen."

She is in her final writing up year of her doctorate at Birkbeck, University of London. She is co-editor of A Wild and Precious Life: Recovery Anthology, with Zoe Gilbert, and co-runs London Lit Lab. Her latest book Sins of My Father: A Daughter, a Cult, a Wild Unravelling is her attempt to unravel the mysteries of a father who believed himself to be beyond reproach. When Lily was just six years old, her father left the family home to follow his guru to India, with the promise of enlightenment in the cult of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, the infamous leader who was recently covered in the popular documentary Wild Wild Country. She shares with Rachel insights from writing her recent memoir sharing memories from the long, hot summers of her teenage years in Italy in her father's commune to suffering the effects of his addiction to alcohol and prescription drugs. Rachel helps Lily unpack the complex relationship dynamics with her father and offers her insights on the familial complications inherent in so many families involved in high control groups. Before You Go: Rachel reflects on the impact suffered by the family members of those lost to cultic groups, pointing out the often unrecognized tragedies that stain so many family legacies for generations.
