In this festive episode of "Inspiration Nation," hosts Lee Kemp and Jose Noya embark on a heartfelt journey exploring the essence of Christmas spirit and kindness. The episode's central quote, "I will honour Christmas in my heart and try to keep it all the year," from "A Muppet Christmas Carol," aptly captures the theme. Lee and Jose delve into the transformative power of the Christmas spirit, questioning why such warmth and kindness are often confined to the holiday season. They discuss how maintaining this spirit throughout the year could positively impact everyday life.Lee shares his resolution to embody the Christmas spirit year-round, acknowledging that it's more than just a festive mood but a deeper level of kindness, forgiveness, and relaxation. Jose, reflecting on the concept of 'Memento Mori' and the transient nature of life, emphasizes the importance of kindness and connection. The episode is rich with personal anecdotes, references to favourite Christmas movies, and a lively discussion on forming and maintaining positive habits.Listeners are reminded to engage with the podcast by liking, subscribing, and reviewing, and to join the conversation on Twitter at @ListenToIN. In episode no. 148 of the Rock's Backpages podcast, we welcome music-industry legend Rob Dickins and ask him to tell us about his "pop life" in the 27 years he worked with Prince, Madonna and other Warner Brothers superstars. Rob takes us back to his music-infused youth when his dad Percy worked for Melody Maker and New Musical Express and his brother Barry managed the High Numbers/Who. We hear about his days booking bands as a Social Sec at Loughborough University, and then about his start at Warner Publishing in 1971. Tremendous yarns about Madonna, Cher, Rod Stewart and others follow in rapid succession, along with the mind-boggling account of how Rob became global head of Warner Music… for 24 hours. A new biography of Leon Russell gives us the perfect excuse to hear clips from Andy Gill's 1998 audio interview with "the master of space and time" — the first about 1970's Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour, the second about the writing of Russell's beloved 'Song For You'. After we've said goodbye to former Miles sideman and Weather Reporter Wayne Shorter and to Jackson Browne's virtuoso sideman David Lindley, Mark talks us out with quotes from his favourite new library additions from the past fortnight. Many thanks to special guest Rob Dickins. Pieces discussed: Leon Russell audio interview, Wayne Shorter: The Sunny Weatherman, Wayne Shorter: After the Storm, Michelle Mercer on Wayne Shorter, Behind the Curtain: David Lindley, Lynyrd Skynyrd: The 100 Proof Blues, Kraftwerk's Ralf Hütter and Maureen Cleave in conversation with Jack Good. Nobody knows more about being on the receiving end of people's fears and assumptions than LGBTQ people. But we are all pre programmed with these from the environment we grew up in. The less aware you are of your internal (mental) state, the more you become a prisoner of it, Why are some Queer people still internally homophobic and how does this impact their later lives? How does all this trauma impact us and prevent us from being our authentic selves free from anxiety ? LGBTQ+ mental health is the focus in this episode as Graeme Smith talks to the US based psychotherapist and author Chris Warren Dickins from his practice in New Jersey about his new book "Beyond your confines". The book aimed at people who are interested in seeking therapy but often are not able to. In this chat we learn some of the core messages and thinking behind "Beyond your confines" and learn methods to apply the these to our own lives. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/outcastuk/message

One of the biggest problems in our industry is the high level of staff turnover and attrition. This can have negative implications on profits, branding, and continuity of service. How do you overcome this? Neil Dickins, the founder of Intellectual Capital Resources, shares how they have achieved excellent employee engagement and retention for the last 21 years. This correlates with them achieving 86 profitable quarters in a row! Founded in 1999, IC Resources now employs over 70 people with 7 offices across the UK, Germany, Austria, China and the USA. They've made over 12,000 placements and are the pre-eminent ‘deep tech' recruiter in the UK and Europe. In this episode, Neil shares their approach to hiring, organic growth, culture and KPI management, and how ‘letting go' can be a challenge but beneficial in the long run. Enjoy! Episode Outline and Highlights [1:30] Neil reveals how he ended up in the UK and how he fell in love with recruiting. [5:22] Top key factors to IC Resources' success. [11:58] Being part of the business community: Neil reveals examples of how you can be part of the industry you find yourself in. [21:05] Building a strong business by having no unwanted staff turnover. [22:56] Creating a high level of staff retention [25:00] IC Resources' approach on dynamic KPIs [28:49] Give your team autonomy and let go. Neil discusses the challenge and benefit of ‘letting go.' [32:12] Discussion on organic growth and promoting from within. [36:37] How to manage your team members who are working remotely. [43:37] Neil's number one message to his teams: hear about the ten-second rule. [46:14] Don't just do it for the money Neil shares the ‘worst mistake' they ever made. [52:00] Temp checking on your teams: when to support and when to let go. Critical Success Factors for Sustainable Growth and Profitability I reached out to Neil because IC Resources were listed in the Hot 100 List of the Recruiter Magazine. Out of 30-40,000 recruitment firms in the UK, they are 33rd in terms of billings per employee. This is on top of them having 86 straight profitable quarters! Such an incredible feat has a lot of contributing factors. But I asked Neil to boil it down to the key components. Neil mentioned two: Taking the long term view and commitment to both your clients and employees Being actively involved within the business community that you serve Avoiding Unwanted Staff Turnover As we went through our conversation, it was clear that what significantly contributed to IC Resources' strong business is retaining talent and reducing staff turnover. “For 21 years...we almost had no unwanted staff turnover” is how Neil puts it. What are their practices to have such high staff retention? Neil said, “It is a combination of culture and lack of greed.” He laid out some of their employee practices which I believe you will find interesting: Having targets that are reasonable, fair, and achievable. Having a sense of responsibility and achievement. Day to day enjoyment and satisfaction. All of the abovementioned factors are founded on how they manage their KPIs. Their approach to having dynamic and custom KPIs for each person is genius! Learn more about it while listening. The Ten-Second Rule I've noticed that many successful leaders have certain phrases or key messages they repeat over and over to their team until it becomes part of the DNA of the organization. I asked Neil what message he finds himself repeating when communicating with his team. He shared a nugget of wisdom that we could all adopt as a fundamental principle in doing business; let's call it the ‘ten-second rule'. This is how he puts it: “People know within 10 seconds of a phone call if you see them as a person or as a pound sign.” How does that impact the overall end-to-end hiring process? Listen to this episode of The Resilient Recruiter to hear Neil explain this philosophy in detail. We welcome Molly Dickens from &Mother as our guest this week. Molly is a PhD stress physiologist, maternal health advocate, co-founder of &Mother, a non-profit organization dedicated to breaking down some of the barriers that keep women from ‘having it all’. Molly co-founded this organization with Alysia Montano, who you might know as one of the leading voices working for equal representation in sport for women and for mothers. Alysia started the #dreammaternity movement and her oped in the NY Times on her experience as a pregnant athlete dealing with a crumbling sponsorship deal with shoe wear giant, Nike, glaringly exposed the rampant bias and inequality toward women in sport. &Mother envisions a world where women have the choice to pursue both career and motherhood without penalty or barriers. They want to see a workplace where mothers are leaders and sought after as employees, where motherhood is not a secret and women can openly express their needs without retribution. A society that is healthier and more productive because it values mothers and reflects the needs of modern families. We discuss breaking down the stereotype of “mother” and building awareness about the barriers currently faced by mothers in the workforce in all industries. The motherhood penalty is explained in some detail, &Mother is working to create safe spaces for women in sport, including lactation stations at major sporting events. This is our #GivingTuesday episode and we are delighted to be highlighting this non-profit as one of the many option for the Mum’s the Word followers. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.09.22.308163v1?rss=1 Authors: Schalz, S., Dickins, T. E. Abstract: Previous research has shown that humans can discriminate two individual rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta), as well as two individual zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) by their vocalizations. The discrimination of individual zebra finches largely relies on differences in pitch contour, although this is not the only relevant cue. The purpose of the present experiment was to examine whether humans can also discriminate two individual large-billed crows (Corvus macrorhynchos) by their calls. Discrimination was tested with a forced-choice Same-Different Paradigm. Results show a high discrimination accuracy without prior training, although the scores obtained here were lower than those in the zebra finch discrimination task. There was no significant learning trend across trials. Future studies should investigate which acoustic cues participants use for the discrimination of individual crows and expand these findings with more non-human animal vocalizations. I had the chance to discuss the truth about hiring in real estate with Louisa Dickens, co-founder of LMRE, a leading global proptech recruitment business helping startups scale and corporates find new talent. As a UK PropTech Association board member, Louisa is well-placed to understand what both proptech businesses and candidates expect from each other during the recruitment process and the common hiring mistakes that proptech startups and corporates make. Highlights of this episode include: What employees really want, and what businesses look for in candidates How to build a diverse team How hiring is changing, and the importance of having a hiring strategy Where start-ups and corporates go wrong, and how to avoid common mistakes Resources: Lmre.co.uk https://www.linkedin.com/in/louisa-dickins-ab065392/ annaclareharper.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/annaclareharper/
Anne McElvoy investigates the role of culture within historic Soviet expansionism and current Russian geopolitics. She talks to Charles Clover, author of Black Wind, White Snow: The Rise of Russia's New Nationalism about Eurasianism, an old idea with considerable traction in Putin's Russia and why bad ideas tend to win out over good ones . Historian Polly Jones, author of Myth Memory Trauma: Rethinking the Soviet past, 1953-70 and Clem Cecil, in-coming Director of Pushkin House, are in the studio to discuss the extent of Soviet interest in soft power alongside Mark Nash, curator of Red Africa and Ian Christie, co-curator of Unexpected Eisenstein, two new exhibitions in London. The continuing cultural legacy of Cold War relations between the Soviet Union and Africa is the subject of Red Africa, a season of film, art exhibition, talks and events, runs at Calvert 22 in London while at the same time Unexpected Eisenstein, a new exhibition at GRAD gallery in London, tells the story of the anglophile tendencies of a the great Soviet film-maker, Sergei Eisenstein. Eisenstein, whose epic and patriotic films Battleship Potemkin, Alexander Nevsky and Ivan the Terrible, together constitute a visual retrospective of Russian power, was himself hugely influenced by British writers from Shakespeare to Dickins. But as Anne McElvoy hears, the director went on to influence generations of British artists and film-makers, one legacy of his six-week sojourn in London in 1929. It was, as Christie explains, a trip ordered but not precisely sponsored, by Stalin. Producer: Jacqueline Smith
