“Every time you write something hard, it changes you as a writer, and it makes you a better writer.” - Jessica BrodyToday I'm sharing a conversation with Jessica Brody where we talk about some of the most common mistakes writers make when outlining, writing, and editing their books using the “Save the Cat” method. Here's a preview of what's included:[02:30] Jessica introduces herself and shares her experience writing fiction using the Save The Cat! plotting method.[04:00] Savannah asks Jessica about marrying the external plot of a story to the protagonist's internal arc. Savannah sees a lot of writers focus solely on the external plot events and not enough on character growth and development. Jessica shares her thoughts on how to make sure you're balancing both plot and character as you write.[11:45] Savannah asks Jessica to talk about two important multi-scene beats—the Fun and Games beat and the Bad Guys Close In beat. Jessica shares her thoughts on breaking these longer beats down into smaller, more manageable chunks.[18:00] Savannah asks Jessica about being too rigid with the Save The Cat! structure. Specifically, what happens if your beats don't line up with the percentages recommended? Jessica shares her thoughts.[21:50] Jessica talks about how she had a hard time with the All Is Lost beat and the Dark Night Of The Soul beat until she figured out a very important distinction.[30:40] Jessica talks about some things to consider in terms of your first 25-50 pages when it comes time to query agents.Links mentioned in this episode:Learn more about Jessica Brody on her website or connect with her on InstagramCheck out Jessica's craft books to go deeper into the STC! method—Save the Cat! Hey Fandom! Welcome back for another episode of Trash Talk Roundtable with your Challenge Fandom Podcast hosts Rick, Corrina, Josh and Tony. This week we are here to break down the upcoming cast for MTV's The Challenge season 39 titled "Battle For A New Champion". We kick off by breaking down the men's cast starting with Asaf Goren, Callum Izzard, Chauncey Palmer, Ciarran Stott, Corey Lay, Ed Eason, Emanuel Neagu, Horacio Gutierrez JR, Hughie Maughan, James Lock, Jay Starrett and Kyland Young. We also discuss whether or not we consider this Asaf's rookie season, how we think the international Challengers will fair against the most experienced veteran players of this game, do we think Chauncey can break away from S38 and make a name for himself, who we think is going to receive the "rookie treatment" this season, some male Challengers we would have rather seen on this season, casting for entertainment VS casting for competition, and of course who we are most and least excited to see back on our MTV screens. Next we break down the women on the cast beginning with Berna Canbeldek, "Big T" Fazakerley, Colleen Schneider, Jessica Brody, JuJuy Jimenez, Michele Fitzgerald, Melissa Reeves, Moriah Jadea, Nurys Mateo, Olivia Kaiser, Ravyn, Rochelle and Zara Zoffany. We discuss why we are worried about Big T, what makes us excited to see people like Jessica Brody on the cast, why we really didn't want the less experienced international players on a battle for a new champion season, why Michele could be set up well or terrible depending on how she approaches the game, where we think a particular fan favorite actually lacks in the game, and did Zara pick up any tips and tricks from Wes on World Championship besides *always do the pre-puzzle*?! Did you ever have at the beginning of pursuing a dream career someone along the way recommend taking the safe route (not the leap)? Deep in your heart you knew you had to attempt the full leap? This episode will inspire you to keep going for your dreams, listen to your intuition, and take your shot at success, no matter what.   I have a special surprise for you today! In our episode, I am delighted to give my super talented niece, Jessica Brody, the guest spotlight! Watching Jessica grow up from this spunky, super smart, dog-loving, always curious young girl to a highly creative, successful writer has been one of the highlights of my life.    She is the author of the #1 bestselling novel-writing guide, Save the Cat! Writes a Novel and is the founder of the online writing school, Writing Mastery Academy. She knew without a doubt she needed to give her love of writing a shot at success and not give up.   Jessica explains how her beliefs about adulting overshadowed her childhood dream of being a writer. After exploring a career in finance, she got laid off from her corporate job and took that as a sign from the universe to begin her writing career by writing her first book. Jessica chose to follow her joy and intuition to Paris and write for a month while living in the city of lights - that lit up her dream to be a successful writer/author.    20 novels for teens, tweens, and adults later, she has a flourishing career as a writer, author, writing coach, and speaker. Some of her many books include The Geography of Lost Things, The Chaos of Standing Still, A Week of Mondays, 52 Reasons to Hate My Father, Amelia Gray is Almost Okay, the Unremembered trilogy, and the System Divine series, which is a sci-fi reimagining of Victor Hugo's Les Misérables, co-written with Joanne Rendell. Her books have been translated and published in over 20 languages and several have been optioned for film and television. She lives with her husband and three dogs near Portland, OR.   Jessica is a beautiful example of following your joy and intuition for a fulfilling result. I hope this interview inspires you to keep going for your dreams. Jessica Brody is the author of the well-known writing book Save the Cat! Writes a Novel and teaches classes on this writing method, but she has published over 20 books for all ages, including middle grade. Her most recent, titled Amelia Gray is Almost Okay, came out in March of this year. Amelia is a kid who moves around a lot due to her father's job as a hotel renovator and reimaginer. Like a lot of middle schoolers, she is trying to figure out who she is and what she's good at.  During one memorable summer in a new town, she decides to try on different personas to see which one fits best.  Is she an athlete, a theater kid, or a reporter?  What I loved about this book is that I could relate to it even as an adult.  I still try different versions of myself sometimes. Jessica talks to us about what words in the English language really get under her skin, how being fired from MGM Studios gave her the writing opportunity she needed, and her overwhelming passion for spreadsheets. This week we're (figuratively) ripping our skin off and talking about the books we're writing! This is an appetizer to a series we're planning to do this summer all about how a book gets made. We give a mini preview about what our books are about, and break down what our book writing process was like, from what made us finally start writing to what we wish we knew before we wrote our books. We also share the resources that helped us along our process and talk about what's coming next for our books!   We also recap our long weekend trips and our feelings about hot dogs
