Brenden Schaeffer discusses Miles Mikolas after his latest loss for the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night in Philadelphia. The Phillies beat the Cardinals, 7-2. Mikolas is 0-4 in August and has his highest season-long ERA since joining the Cardinals. After turning 35 this week, it begs the question of how much the Cardinals should reasonably be relying upon Mikolas to be great in 2024. Should they stock a rotation that leaves Mikolas as one of the latter names in the group of five--or will he be pushed toward the front of the rotation again next season? Plus, the Cardinals have a prospect in Double-A who is absolutely tearing the cover off the ball. He did it again Friday, perhaps cementing himself as the best hitter in all of the Texas League at this point. I'm excited to share this conversation with Royals prospect Tyler Tolbert. Tolbert, 25, plays for the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. He is a true utility player, playing infield and outfield: wherever the team needs him. He is in the top five in the Texas League in stolen bases and is second in the league in hits (118) and triples (6). Tyler shared a lot in this interview. He talked about his approach to the game, changing positions, and even going to Austraila for winter ball. The Birmingham native went to college at UAB and was drafted by the Royals in the 13th round in 2019. I enjoyed hearing him talk about his experiences as a young player. He wasn't surrounded by a lot of players that looked like him. But he talks about the amazing support system around him and, ultimately, finding peace and brotherhood within his peer group. Tyler is an exceptional young man. I know you will enjoy this conversation. Please rate and review the BBM podcast. Every subscriber helps.
This week's episode provides updates on a number of notable Midland RockHounds before turning to discuss a collection of Lansing pitchers. How are each of Midland's top four offensive prospects faring, and what does each need to do to cement their progress through the Double-A level? What's behind the recent success of Joey Estes and Ryan Cusick on Texas League mounds, and what do Blake Beers and Jack Perkins need to do to reach similar heights there? What separates Jacob Watters' and Joelvis Del Rosario's impressive stuff from attaining equally impressive results? How legitimate is Tyler Baum's recent success? What are the two most effective bat-missing pitches in the A's organization? The answers to these questions, and others, may surprise you.
(0:28) Hooks manager Joe Thon addresses the series at San Antonio, gives a scouting report on Astros top prospect Drew Gilbert, and tells us about Mother's Day at his family's home in Puerto Rico. (7:17) We check in with RHP Tyler Brown, who is in his 3rd year of pro ball after starring at Vanderbilt University. (12:32) LHP Colton Gordon, a highly-rated hurler in the Houston system, speaks about his start to the season. Gordon is now 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA in his last 3 starts, striking out 23 against 11 hits and 7 walks in 16.0 innings. (20:36) IF Shay Whitcomb, who ranks within Texas League's top 5 in home runs, extra base hits and RBIs, breaks down his approach to 2023. (27:33) Bonus Baseball: Astros OF Chas McCormick on his rehab stint in CC at the beginning of the month.
In the season previews, I posited that Midland had the most important rotation to watch among those of the A's four minor league affiliates. Even with Mason Miller's quick ascension from the Texas League to the majors, the remaining quintet of RockHounds starters remains the most-hyped group of hurlers in a pitching-needy organization, so it's thus quite organizationally important to check in on how their fortunes are beginning to unfold in 2023. Fresh off watching and charting every pitch of their most recent series, I dive into the particulars of the performance and skill indicators of each of Midland's five starting pitchers and which direction each is trending in at this early-season juncture.

Every once in a while, a Moonlighter just falls into your lap. Matt Buschmann connected to the podcast on Twitter, and, as it turns out, he was just the kind of story we are looking for. Matt Buschmann is a 10-year minor league baseball veteran who made three appearances in the Majors. When his playing days were done, he became the bullpen coach for the Toronto Blue Jays. Buschmann has the kind of story diehard baseball fan loves to hear, and he came to the right place to tell it. Matt Buschmann grew up in Missouri but headed east to play his college ball for Vanderbilt. Vandy is a premier SEC baseball program, and Buschmann was part of two SEC tournament runs in the early 2000s. After being drafted in the 15th round of the 2006 draft by the Padres, Buschmann had a lot of early success, earning various all-star awards in the California League and Texas League. Over the next several years, Buschmann moved between the upper levels of minor league ball and across organizations playing for the Padres, Rays, Athletics, Orioles, and Reds, before landing with the Arizona Diamondbacks. It was there that he finally earned his shot. In April of 2016, Matt Buschmann was called up by the Arizona Diamondbacks. He made three appearances, throwing 4.1 innings, giving up one earned run, and recording three strikeouts. After his stint in the bigs, he was sent back down to Triple-A. He was signed by the Blue Jays for the 2017 season but made no appearances. When his playing days were done, Matt Buschmann decided to stay in the game but in a new role. He spent a year with the Giants working in player development before returning to the Blue Jays in 2018. He has been serving as the bullpen coach for Toronto for the last few seasons. This interview covers everything about Matt Buschmann's career as a player and coach. From his time at Vandy to his new role as a big league coach, Buschmann has seen just about everything on the diamond.

Tom Nichols, Voice of the Dayton Dragons, joins Jesse Goldberg-Strassler and Kevin Reichard to share his favorite baseball stories, including the arrest of a player in the middle of a game, in this week’s Ballpark Digest Broadcaster Chat.Nichols began his career as a fill-in broadcaster for the Indianapolis Indians under Howard Kellman, then spent several years as the Voice of the Mobile BayBears and stints in Peoria and Fort Wayne before landing with the Dragons, one of MiLB's best operations. In this week's chat, Nichols shares some of the notable stories gleaned over his career, including a memorable series at Orlando's then-Cracker Jack Stadium where a BayBears player tangled with a Disney entertainer on the field and then was arrested the next day in the midst of a game, called in from his outfield position. He also tells tales of his most interesting broadcasting gigs, including a stint with the Kinston Indians, where he called his first game at Durham Athletic Park, where the broadcast area was basically a third dugout right behind home plate. The stories come fast and furious in this episode. The Baseball Thesaurus term of the week: Texas Leaguer, dating back to the spacious outfields of the old Texas League, where outfielders played deep to prevent doubles and triples. That made it easy for a batter to bloop a hit over the infielders and far from the outfielders.Jesse Goldberg-Strassler is the Voice of the Lansing Lugnuts and the author of The Baseball Thesaurusand The Football Thesaurus from August Publications. My first play-by-play guy on the on the podcast and he's on his way to Amarillo yet again this year to be the Double-A broadcaster for the Amarillo Sod Poodles, the minor league affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Sam Levitt is my guest and he is also fresh off of his March Madness duties as he heads back for another season in the minors as the lead broadcaster. Most people forget that the staff members have to live the same grueling schedule in the minor leagues as the players do. Bus trips all over the place, eating crappy food in the middle of nowhere and living out of a suitcase for 6 months+. Not an easy life, but these announcers and play-by-play guys are trying to move up as well. Sam has some great stories about how he went to Northwestern originally for Pre-Med, but ended up at their world renowned broadcast/journalism school and fell in love with it. He began his journey as a broadcaster in independent ball with the Gateway Grizzlies outside of St. Louis and made the switch to Corpus Christi in the Texas League 3 years later. He gives us a behind the scenes look at the differences between doing college basketball and pro baseball including what it's been like to cover the Cinderella Story over the past few years in Loyola-Chicago during their March Madness recent runs.Check him out on social media:@sammylevand on his website: https://samlevittonair.com/#homeFollow Me and SUBSCRIBE, LIKE and REVIEW the Too Tall Sports Podcast:Instagram: @tootallsportspodcastTwitter: @TooTallSportsFacebook Group: TooTallSportsPodcastApple Podcasts: Too Tall Sports PodcastSpotify: Too Tall Sports PodcastYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOT1dawh_079qckq7OmFHAQPandora: https://www.pandora.com/podcast/too-tall-sports-podcast/PC:52128Email: tootallsportspodcast@gmail.com
Jesse Goldberg-Strassler and Kevin Reichard are joined by Phil Elson, Voice of Arkansas Razorbacks baseball, to discuss the state of college baseball in this week’s Ballpark Digest Broadcaster Chat.Elson began his career in Minor League Baseball and worked a variety of circuits (Eastern League, Pioneer League, Sally League, California League) before ending up as the Voice of the Texas League’s Arkansas Travelers. As Voice of the Razorbacks, Elson has seen how the sport has matured in the cutting-edge SEC, between upgraded facilities and the extensive use of technology to guide performance. In fact, he argues college baseball has become the true hotbed of baseball innovation, finding the sweet spot between pitching and hitting. You don’t see the lightning bats anymore, and the actual baseball has been refined. It’s a balance MLB and MiLB are striving to create, and it already exists in college baseball. In addition, during his seven years with the ‘Backs, facilities have improved every year, both in Arkansas and the rest of the SEC, and college facilities are now augmented with spacious training facilities and state-of-the-art performance centers. Even the newest iterations of synthetic turf seem to work well.A discussion of The Baseball Thesaurus term turns into a broader discussion of the tone of the game and whether too many violent terms are employed during the course of a game.Jesse Goldberg-Strassler is the Voice of the Lansing Lugnuts and the author of The Baseball Thesaurus and The Football Thesaurus from August Publications. Kevin Reichard is publisher at August Publications and Ballpark Digest.
Skyler Henson caught a tremendous baseball break at the age of 14, when he signed on with the Double-A Springfield Cardinals... to be the bat boy. In 2019, after a nearly 40-year absence, affiliated minor-league baseball returned to Amarillo with the debut of the Sod Poodles, a Class AA Padres affiliate who won the Texas League title and drew over 400,000 fans in their first season of play. (This despite a team name that infuriated many locals — reportedly it’s obscure pioneer slang for “prairie dogs.”) As Brian M. Ingrassia suggests, however, the Sod Poodles are likely to face some of the same challenges that faced the city’s first affiliated team, the Gold Sox, whose history serves as “a case study illustrating how minor-league ball often only tenuously thrived in a mid-sized city.” An associate professor of history at West Texas A&M University, Ingrassia tells this tale in “The Yellow City’s Tenuous Hold on the Gold Sox: Affiliated Texas League Baseball in Amarillo, 1959–1982,” forthcoming in the Panhandle-Plains Historical Review. He joins Ryan on this episode to discuss the complex interplay between postwar urban development and minor-league baseball, as well as to share stories about the legendary players who have passed through Amarillo on their way to the majors. The interview also touches on the relationship between Ingrassia’s first book, The Rise of Gridiron University: Higher Education’s Uneasy Alliance with Big-Time Football (2012); his more recent research on baseball; and his current scholarly project, a book-length examination of auto racing, urban planning, and the “good roads” movement of the early 1900s.
Padres Minor League manager Phillip Wellman joins this week’s episode to look back at Double-A Amarillo’s run to a Texas League title in 2019. He also discusses the many prospects from that club that have been traded to other organizations. Also on the show, Tyler and Sam break down what’s missed without a 2020 Minor League postseason, Benjamin Hill reviews what clubs did during the season that wasn’t and MiLB.com’s Josh Jackson shares the story of Smead Jolley, a Monster of the Minors.
Joe Rizzo brings you baseball, this time on his birthday! Riz wanted to celebrate his birthday by bringing on longtime friend Dave Schultz, who is the program director and host of afternoon drive show The Game Plan on WNSP 105.5 FM in Mobile, Ala. Riz & Dave have flown in the same circles for nearly 30 years, starting at the Baseball Winter Meetings at the Fountainbleu Hotel in Miami Beach in 1991. That is where the minor league war stories began, and they were aplenty for the episode. Dave is originally from Syracuse, NY, and explained why the Blue Jays using Buffalo as their home city for the pandemic has extra meaning to him. It has a connection to his first job in Baseball, where he was in Wichita, Kan., in the Texas League. Riz had Dave recount his stops all through the minors and also his radio and career posts, where he has recorded a long history of success. In addition to being Riz's birthday, it also was the anniversary of Dave moving to WNSP, where you often can hear Riz do guest spots about MMA (and maybe some baseball ones sometime in the future). For the Veteran of the Day, Riz asked Dave to choose. Thus, this show is for Judge Jack Schultz, who happens to be Dave's father. Judge Jack Schultz enlisted in the Army following high school graduation in January 1945. He was stationed at Fort Lewis outside of Seattle. Following an honorable discharge, he hitched-hiked back across the country. To me, you've always run a really good live as you speak way of life with all of your social justice stuff. I look up to you in terms of you put your money where your mouth is, but really your time where your heart is. I appreciate that. I think you do so much for people, but you're also the host of Pub Theology. Pub Theology is a dialogue group that usually meets at The Friendly Spot, but because of COVID we're meeting online, you talk about faith, the community in San Antonio, creating common good and I love the slogan, “Different brews and different views. All perspectives welcome.” Gavin: What are you drinking today, Justin? Justin: Well, I've got a sparkling water from Kirkland, but I also have a Saint Arnold's art car, IPA. Gavin: Good Texas beer. Right now-- I've never had this one, the Freetail Bat Outta Helles. Pub Theology themes, so there's a hell theme there, but it has a San Antonio scene there. Justin: [unintelligible 00:05:01] Dortch Law and I drank other people's beer the whole time and he seemed offended, but he didn't bring me any beer to drink so I did [unintelligible 00:05:11] Gavin: That's fair. It's good. Now, I really respect you, Justin, you've been serving in around town at various events and been supporting political candidates you are involved in everything I know about. You're also good friends with my good friend, Phil Walkins, who goes to our church and a great local attorneys in town. The stuff that you promote it always connects with me. I think a lot of the people who listen to Pub Theology and probably Alamo Hour. You started this Alamo Hour maybe at the start of 2020? Justin: At the start of the shutdown. I didn't want to do it, and all of a sudden I had time on my hands, so I was able to do it. I had started buying the equipment, troubleshooting, but then once the shutdown happened, I didn't have an excuse anymore. Gavin: Wow. That's great. Who has been your favorite guest so far? Now I've had maybe like 20, maybe 15, 20 episodes. Justin: This is 25. Gavin: Oh, wow. That's great. Yes. Justin: I like the meaty dense stuff. I've had some really interesting-- These epidemiologists, including Dr. Rohr-Allegrini from here in San Antonio, Dr. Lesch is a Syrian expert. Some of those things have been really interesting. A surprise one is I had a guy who was the Texas League...

Tom Kayser was the president of the Texas League for 25 years. The San Antonio Missions were members of the Texas League during that time. He has authored books on the Texas League and baseball's Texas history. He is revered for his success as the president and his love of the game. Listen to him share his stories and thoughts on the game that defined his life. Transcript: Justin Hill: Hello and Bienvenidos, San Antonio. Welcome to The Alamo Hour discussing the people, places and passion that make our city. My name is Justin Hill, a local attorney, a proud San Antonian, and keeper of chickens and bees. On The Alamo Hour, you'll get to hear from the people that make San Antonio great and unique and the best kept secret in Texas. We're glad that you're here. All right, welcome to episode 10 of The Alamo Hour. Today's guest is Tom Kayser. Tom is a baseball man. He was the president of the Texas League for 25 years. It's one of three double-A minor leagues. That's a yes, I got a head nod. Tom Kayser: Sorry. [laughter] Justin: He wrote Baseball in The Lone Star State, the Texas Leagues greatest hits. He wrote The Texas League Almanac. In 2016, he was inducted into the Texas League Hall of Fame. We've asked him on here today to talk about Texas, Texas baseball, the Missions. The Missions were part of the Texas League and I think, Tom's got a lot to add on. Anybody who's interested in baseball, anybody who's followed the city's quest to get a baseball team and sort of the considerations there. Tom, thank you for being here. Tom: I'm happy to do it. Justin: I always start these with kind of a top 10 list. Get to know a little bit more about you, get to know sort of your connection to our city. You do live in San Antonio, right? Tom: Absolutely. Justin: How long have you lived here and sort of what part of town have you lived in? Tom: Bought a house inside of 1604, in the East of 281 back in October of '93 and I still live in that house. Justin: Is that right? Tom: Yes. Justin: A lot's changed there. Tom: Yes. There wasn't anything on the other side of 1604. As a matter of fact, Gold Canyon wasn't even there back then. You could go across 281 on a bridge, on the Henderson Pass, it used to cross over there and can't do that anymore, but too many people. Justin: You've been here a long time. Tom: I have. Justin: Straight the whole time, '93 on. Tom: Absolutely. Justin: We're in COVID shutdown. This is kind of a strange question, but I think it works. Any favorite place to eat right now? We're doing a bunch of takeout. We're trying to support our old favorites, but is there any spot you're going to or are you shut down? Tom: I'm a pretty good cook, HEB basically. I buy my supplies, but we're coming out of the soup season. I'm just finishing a barley mushroom soup which is fabulous. Having had my office in my house, it's really what I tended to do is eat at home a lot. I wish I could come up with a top. Justin: I need to learn. Tom: Pericos on Saturday morning on 1604 because we've had a group, go on a breakfast on Saturday for tacos forever. Justin: That's great. Tom: It's down to a very slimmed-down group of four. Justin: Right now? Tom: No. We really miss it too, boy. Justin: We'll be there again soon. I had Commissioner [unintelligible 00:03:13] here and I said, we'll get back to normal soon and he was not very encouraging to my optimism. I'm hoping he's wrong because I think we all need to. You've lived here long enough and you have been involved in baseball on the side of town that I really haven't spent much time where the Missions play in that part of town. Are there any things in San Antonio that you think are hidden gems, is what I call them? You've got somebody coming into town and you go, ''Yes, but this isn't in the guidebook, you really need to go see this or do this thing.'' Tom: I tend to take people to the Pearl for sure, but there are so many things that are on the top 10 that it's like, if...

Coach Nick Derba is the Head Baseball Coach at the University of Maine. Derba served as interim head coach at UMaine during the 2016-17, guiding UMaine to its highest win total in four years (25). In America East Championship play, Derba led the Black Bears to four straight wins, earning a berth in the title game. The impressive stretch run marked the first time since 2013 that UMaine appeared in the league championship. Derba also mentored a pair of all-conference selections and two America East all-rookie team members. Derba was promoted to associate head coach in 2015. During his first three seasons at UMaine, he served as the team's recruiting and summer camp coordinator. He also was directly involved in UMaine baseball's community outreach efforts, including fundraising for the Vs. Cancer Foundation, and team visits to Eastern Maine Medical Center, Old Town YMCA and local schools. Prior to joining the UMaine community, Derba was the hitting and catchers coach for the Chatham Anglers of the Cape Cod Baseball League in summer 2013 — the same team that he played for from 2004-06. During the 2012 season, he was a volunteer at Manhattan College after working with the Jasper catchers in the 2010 and 2011 off-seasons. In the 2007 Major League Draft, the St. Louis Cardinals selected Derba in the 31st round. He played six years in the Cardinal system, advancing as high as AAA Memphis (PCL). In 2012, he was a member of the Texas League champion Springfield Cardinals. From 2008-12, Derba spent significant time in the Cardinals Major League spring training camp. After the 2012 season, he retired to pursue a coaching career. Derba had a highly decorated playing career at Manhattan College, where he was honored as a three-time All-MAAC first team catcher. He was the only three-year captain in Manhattan baseball history and still ranks among the school's all-time leaders in career home runs, hits, runs scored, games played and RBIs.
