What are YOUR favorite Dead Weather tracks? This is the question at the heart of the second installment of our ongoing TOP SPECIAL series - wherein we award our top three tracks from a set of albums with medals of varying (christian?) names. Today we welcome back returning guest Luke Sinclare to select choice cuts from each album by The Dead Weather, Jack White's goth-powered supergroup featuring Alison Mosshart, Jack Lawrence, Dean Fertita and the most important part of the band: the bass. 2009's Horehound, 2010's Sea of Cowards, and 2015's Dodge & Burn have unique flavors all, and we've chosen our season 7 finale episode to sample this range of tunes and uncover our personal favorites in the process. Thanks to everyone out there for joining us this season on the show, and thanks to Luke for helping us finish out the run with one of the most lively conversations we've had on the Third Men Podcast to date! Iggy Pop is back with a new album. Titled Post Pop Depression, it was produced by Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age. Asked why he chose Josh, Iggy tells us, "I kind of knew about [Queens of the Stone Age] and I would hear stuff and I would go, 'Kind of fresh, kind of quirky.' I needed to come up with the goods and make a really good record and somebody said, 'Josh Homme might do something with you.' So then I really researched him." Iggy will be backed by Homme, Dean Fertita -- who plays with both Queens and The Dead Weather -- and Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders when he kicks off a short run of dates in Seattle on March 28th. They'll wrap up the 13-date North American leg in Los Angeles on April 28th and head to Europe a week later.

This episode covers both Jack White projects outside of the White Stripes, The Raconteurs and Dead Weather respectively. The Raconteurs follow-up album, Consolers of the Lonely (2008), was made after the band had toured together and developed their chemistry and as band. This album takes risks, rushing to the finish line for both better and worse.Next would be the debut of Led Zepplin-esque revival band, centered around sex and death, The Dead Weather. Another super group of sorts, Allison Mosshart of the Kills is on vocals, with Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stone Age on guitar, Jack Lawrence of The Raconteurs/Greenhorns on bass, and Jack White on drums. Jack was originally a drummer, and his chops are insane -- but this was a wild card, totally unexpected. And yet, it works so, so well. --Jack White rose to legendary musician status via his breakthrough band, The White Stripes. Coming out as a blues rock, punk aesthetic garage rock band with child-like drummer Meg White, The White Stripes paved the way for a lot of acts to come. As their success grew, Jack White branched out into other projects, including the classic rock inspired "super group" The Raconteurs, and Led Zeppelin-spirit revival, hard as nails "super group," The Dead Weather. As Jack gained momentum elsewhere, The White Stripes came to an end, leaving room for Jack White to explore a solo career. Throughout his solo career, he started honing his comfort material -- country, blues, and fuzz rock -- moving toward new grounds with experimental noise, high tech production, and unexpected plot twists.Tyler, being a conseur of pop and knower of all things music, and Greg, a Jack White super fan, have a lot to say on Jack White, including a plethora of insights and context into the creation of this music, the cultural impact of Jack White and his embedded philosophies, and the growth of self and artist.

Open up, that's not enough! We've been counting the mile markers between last episode, and this episode -- because we're so excited to be back with the second installment of our 2-part DODGE AND BURN album analysis and review! As we learned in part one, The Dead Weather's third LP release is full of oddities and curiosities (like the band itself) and this time around we're taking a tour through each track to uncover even more secrets. When Jack White, Alison Mosshart, Dean Fertita and Little Jack Lawrence get together you know you're in for some fierce-sounding songs that play to each band member's respective strengths - but on Dodge and Burn the band takes things a step further, even going so far as to finish the album with a full-blown power pop ballad! From the irresistible weirdness & rhythm of Three Dollar Hat, to the smokey atmosphere of Rough Detective, to the rock and roll fury that is I Feel Love (Every Million Miles), we consider this album's tunes to be amongst the band's best - and we hope you'll join us for this in-depth exploration of all 12 masterful cuts. We'll also take a look at the album's reception, share some final thoughts from the band about their trajectory from the time, and rate the record using our patented (it's not) rating system. Joining us for the rating is our friend Jessi from the Porch Podcast, the first Third Men guest in our show's history to help rate a record with us! This one is a lot of fun, so get all that buzz-kill energy out the door - because we won't be long, we're no beginners. We'll be here Wednesday night, our pod up just ri-i-ight! We. Feel. Looooooove for The Dead Weather! And what better way to show it than with a deep-dive into this spooky super-group's excellent third album: DODGE AND BURN! In part one of a two-part podcast epic, The Third Men (that's us) are shining a light on what Jack White, Alison Mosshart, Dean Fertita and Little Jack Lawrence were up to from 2013 to 2015, and how a scattered series of break-neck sessions lead to this surprising addition to the Third Man catalog. Of course Jack White fans are quite accustomed to spontaneity and surprises - but would you believe that the surprising thing about this record was that...it was no surprise? That's right, as we explore the origin of Dodge and Burn we'll soak in the wild history of one of the only albums in Jack's canon to carry with it a multi-year concept that was planned out, promoted, executed, and (more or less) completed as intended. And that's not the only oddity that this third Dead Weather record brought to the table! With no touring support, a largely pre-recorded round of promotional materials and an uncharacteristic lack-of-Jack at the forefront of the press, Dodge and Burn stands out as a delightful, expertly executed but WEIRD chapter in TMR history! Joining on this journey is returning guest Jessi from the Porch Podcast (a wonderful show which details a different Pearl Jam cut in each episode!) to talk all things Dead Weather -- plus the challenges and triumphs of operating a record store during a pandemic. We think this album is an impossible winner and we hope you'll don your rough detective caps and open up to the masterful musical madness that awaits in this episode! Crack a bone with us, won't you? It's time for a major deep dive into the Sea of Cowards! This week we take the microscope to The Dead Weather's sophomore release with an album analysis & review of 2010's Sea of Cowards. In a world where both The White Stripes and The Raconteurs were releasing new material, the announcement of a new band featuring Jack White, Alison Mosshart, Dean Fertita and Jack "LJ" Lawrence in the spring of 2009 left many fans and critics scratching their heads. With Jack on the drums for the first time in his post-fame career, The Dead Weather stood out from the aforementioned pack and carved their own psychedelic, dark path through the rock world. A mere ten months following their debut LP Horehound in 2009, the band returned with yet another LP release which built on its predecessor to polished and speaker-rattling results. In part one of this two-part exploration, we review the album from inception to release - including album artwork, the meaning behind the title, and how the band blended spontaneous excitement with sleek studio production for an unforgettable follow-up with an unmistakable sound. We're also joined this week by Third Man Sam Sandak who gives us the low-down on Jack White live at the Santa Barbara Bowl this past summer. So sit back, crack your knuckles (if you're at home), lick an ice cream cone and join us! da da da da See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

American Valhalla, co directed by Homme and Andreas Neumann tells the story of an unlikely musical collaboration between two mavericks of American rock: Joshua Homme, frontman of Queens of the Stone Age and Iggy Pop, the Godfather of Punk. The film, co-directed by Homme, follows the recording of Iggy’s final album ‘Post Pop Depression’ in the California desert, with his band comprising of Homme, his QOTSA bandmate Dean Fertita and Arctic Monkeys’ drummer, Matt Helders, as well as the explosive tour that builds to a crowning performance at London’s iconic Royal Albert Hall. Featuring stunning cinematography and intimate access, American Valhalla reveals the growth of an intense bond between the musicians who have taken to heart the mantra: "you risk nothing you gain nothing. As we got to know each other, you blew my mind” Homme tells Pop in the film. “You really came with such an open mind and saying ‘Yeah, I know what I’ve done but I’m here to…look forward.’” As they prepared the tour to support the album, Iggy received news of the passing of David Bowie – his longtime friend and confidant. In these moments, Pop contemplates his own impermanence and, at his most vulnerable, pushes harder with carpe diem-resolve to rehearse and add the next great landmark to his legacy. http://www.americanvalhallamovie.com

FeedBack w. Wes Nyle. EP19. Jack White. 07.13.12July 9th marked the birthday for one of Detroit’s most notable musicians, a player who simultaneously revolutionized and resurrected true American Blues, but never let one type of music define who he was or who he would be collaborating with.In the documentary It Might Get Loud Jack White stated that Son Houses’s Grinnin In Your Face is his favorite song of all time. The grit and simplicity of this song may shed light on the why White uses tried and true techniques to keep his relatively fresh concepts in a lo-fi time capsule.White started banging on a drum set at age 6, and mulled around the garage rock scene of Detroit for years, contemplating where his overactive drive lead him. His Catholic upbringing would find him as an altar boy in younger years and nearly bring him to a seminary in Wisconsin, with aspirations of becoming a priest. His musical mind would eventually get the better of him when he realized that the school may not let him play his new amp in the dorms. In 1997 Jack created The White Stripes, a highly stylized two piece, with his now ex-wife Meg White, known for their simplistic writing and garage band static. The early years of the band created rumors about what the true relationship was between Jack and Meg. And in 2003 as the duo’s infamy continued to expand, Wayne Coyne and The Flaming Lips touched on the hype, and insanity that surrounded The White Stripes, on the song titled Thank You Jack White. Two years down the road Jack’s creativity and thirst for collaborative art would help cast the mold for The Raconteurs: a legit four piece featuring two members of the Greenhornes, bassist Jack Lawerence and precisionist Patrick Keeler. The band’s first full length was recorded in the home of the bands 4th member, Brendan Benson: a multi-instrumentalist and successful solo artist. Both Raconteurs albums claimed gold success in the UK.2009 was the year of the super group, bringing the US rock genre powerhouses like Dead By Sunrise, Atoms For Peace, Tinted Windows, and Them Crooked Vultures. Jack White was not going to be left out. Even if the band didn’t admit to being labeled as a super group it was hard to deny The Dead Weather combined the talents of Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stone Age, Allison Mosshart of The Kills and the other “Jack” Jack Lawrence. White and Allison credit Captain Beefheart as a major influence on the band’s sound as did the band I featured a couple weeks back Jukebox The Ghost. Here’s a taster of that influence. It wasn’t till his 37th year on this planet; White would use his partners in musical genius to help create his solo album Blunderbuss. This new album defines what White is through and through. The album uses almost exclusively 1st takes with limited track doubling, coupled with recording done using analog tape, and ribbon mics. The signature sound brings forth exactly what White wants. A warm tone that sounds best played from vinyl. A vinyl that can be purchased from Jack’s record store/ label 3rd Man Records. Marketing ploy or not a thank you is deserved to a man who cherishes American music at its greatest and stopped at nothing to shine a beacon on what great music sounds like and how it is created.Happy Birthday Jack White.Tracks Heard In This Podcast: Grinnin In Your Face – Son House Let’s Build A Home – The White Stripes The Hardest Button To Button – The White Stripes Thank You Jack White – The Flaming Lips Store Bought Bones – The Raconteurs Cut Like A Buffalo – The Dead Weather BlunderBuss – Jack White
