Cooper Roberts is an editor and director who just released his feature debut, All You Need is Blood—a delightfully gory tribute to Amblin-esque coming-of-age movies and zombie films. Cooper's background includes experience in advertising and music videos, and most notably, he was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2016 for co-directing the music video for Jack White's band, The Dead Weather, and their song “I Feel Love.”All You Need is Blood is a movie I really want to shout from the rooftops for more people to see. It's a love letter to childhood dreams of filmmaking and zombie movies and is full of charm and blood in equal measure. The effects are also awesome, and the movie is hilarious—I urge you to see it and tell your friends. All You Need is Blood is available to stream on the KINO app, which you can download today. In this conversation with Cooper we dig into the 6 plus year journey of bringing AYNIB to fruition, the challenges of relying on practical effects on indie movies and why casting is one of the most important elements of directing. Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with Cooper Roberts.80% of Directing is CastingCooper cited a famous quote, commonly attributed to Elia Kazan, that directing is 80% casting. For this reason, he paid close attention to the casting process and took his time finding the right people, which tremendously helped bring the characters—and therefore the film—to life. Cooper noted that casting actors who naturally embody the character makes directing them much smoother and more intuitive. Casting actors outside their usual genres can also yield surprising performances, as audiences respond well to seeing familiar faces in unexpected roles, as was the case with Mina Suvari playing a comedic role, which brought a fresh, unexpected dimension to the film.Never underestimate good old cold outreach. With few industry connections, Cooper turned to IMDb Pro to cold-email indie producers. Out of a hundred emails, he connected with several promising candidates and eventually found a committed team. A lot of would-be filmmakers wait to be discovered or think it's the responsibility of an agent or manager to get their movies moving forward, but it's all on you. Even if you don't have representation, just reach out to people. Cold outreach might seem daunting, but when executed well, it can be highly effective in finding partners and funding resources.Build a ‘Brain Trust' for Script FeedbackWhile writing the script for All You Need is Blood, Cooper sought to create his own ‘brain trust' of script consultants and friends for feedback during the writing process, which he modeled after Pixar. Although he didn't take all the notes, he found the input invaluable, as even a "bad" note could highlight a weak spot in the story. He noted Stephen King's advice from On Writing—if multiple people give similar feedback on a section, it's worth reevaluating. It is very easy to fall in love with your own voice and be blind to glaring issues in your script because you're just too close to it to be objective. This is why it's crucial to have trusted advisors and confidantes who can help you mold your projects. For more on Brain Trusts, I highly recommend Creativity Inc. by Ed Catmull, which outlines how Pixar was founded and how they operate to this day with a large emphasis on storytelling. Also, shoutout to script consultant Carson Reeves—Cooper and I both worked with him, and I can tell you he's great. We had to take a few weeks off, but we are back with an episode that is almost as good as the music featured in it - AND THE MUSIC IS VERY GOOD!The idea was to pitch songs that should be used in a sample. Such a fun thought experiment that we thought we should focus on a specific instrument so we could make this a series. So today we present the drums edition of this playlist-based concept.First we'll get into Danny's playlist, featuring 8 songs made up of 2-song pairings that exist in similar spaces. We'll cover country, gritty rock, swampy soulful country funk, and then a random pairing of songs that happen to work fantastic together. Then we'll get into Julius's playlist which covers grunge, Krautrock, and soul - a mix of songs that will have you dancing along while craving buttery chicken. With the last minute addition of a Bjork song it rounds out to 8 classic songs, old and new, that you can jam out to in any setting.Songs featured in this episode:Gettin' HappyHang You From the HeavensTulsa Turnaround (Tyler Childers Live at Farm-Aid)Melt Not My Igloo (Common Remix)Vitamin CTerrapin (Conductor Williams Remix)Links to our Playlists:Danny: Spotify - Apple Music - YoutubeJulius: Spotify - Apple Music - YoutubeCheck our Season 2 preview episode description to see what music we'll be discussing next!Send us a text message! You can follow us here: Instagram Twitter Tiktok Send us a message, we'd love to hear from you! This is an encore presentation of a previous episode, originally airing in September 2020. 4x Grammy-winning producer, engineer and mixer Vance Powell has worked with a wide range of artists and bands including Chris Stapleton, Buddy Guy and Phish. For vinyl collectors, he's arguably most known for being a consistent studio go-to for Jack White, not only being involved with proper studio releases from Jack and his various projects (The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs) but Vance is behind the boards of most every Live At Third Man Records LP, where bands record short sets in front of a couple hundred fans, direct-to-acetate. On this episode, Vance points to his favorite Third Man sessions he's recorded (including some mysterious Radiohead demos), how Chris Stapleton's famous cover of "Tennessee Whiskey" almost didn't happen, and why Vance's own barbecue kept him from his dream of recording U2. Visit sputniksound.com for more info on Vance's work, and follow him on Instagram and Twitter @vancalot.

This week is all about bands playing a famous singer–songwriter's songs better than he ever did… This is a particular phenomenon known as, “The Dylan Factor”. In this episode, we showcase songs by old Bobby Dylan that sound better than the versions he recorded. Some will say that's not a hard feat, but none can deny the powerful songwriting and auspicious lyrics of Dylan. What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. If you've never listened to Dylan because of his polarizing voice and delivery, try these awesome rock n' punk n' metal versions instead! Songs this week include:Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush – “All Along The Watchtower” from Tales Of The Unexpected (1979)Me First & The Gimme Gimmes – “The Times They Are A-Changin'” from Rake It In: The Greatest Hits (2017) Vains Of Jenna – “Blowin' In The Wind” from Reverse Tripped (2011)Mick Ronson – “Like A Rolling Stone” from Heaven And Hull (1994)Ministry – “Lay Lady Lay” from Filth Pig (1995)Red Hot Chili Peppers – “Subterranean Homesick Blues” from The Uplift Mofo Party Plan (1987)The Dead Weather – “New Pony” from Horehound (2009)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/inobscuria/og-shopCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

What are YOUR favorite Dead Weather tracks? This is the question at the heart of the second installment of our ongoing TOP SPECIAL series - wherein we award our top three tracks from a set of albums with medals of varying (christian?) names. Today we welcome back returning guest Luke Sinclare to select choice cuts from each album by The Dead Weather, Jack White's goth-powered supergroup featuring Alison Mosshart, Jack Lawrence, Dean Fertita and the most important part of the band: the bass. 2009's Horehound, 2010's Sea of Cowards, and 2015's Dodge & Burn have unique flavors all, and we've chosen our season 7 finale episode to sample this range of tunes and uncover our personal favorites in the process. Thanks to everyone out there for joining us this season on the show, and thanks to Luke for helping us finish out the run with one of the most lively conversations we've had on the Third Men Podcast to date! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Jagbags favorite Sherrie Adams joins Jagbags once again and this time the subject is Jack White. Which albums are his best? What incarnation was better -- White Stripes, the Raconteurs, or the Dead Weather? Sherrie goes through her top 5 albums with the guys and listens politely as they list their incorrect choices. Beave reads faxes from a hurt Bruce Springsteen, wondering when Sherrie would like to talk about his music -- while Sherrie pronounces him the "Middle Manager" as opposed to "The Boss". We also talk Jack White's guacamole scandal, and why specifically he hates the Black Keys. Tune in for ultimate rock riffs!
Iggy Pop is back with a new album. Titled Post Pop Depression, it was produced by Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age. Asked why he chose Josh, Iggy tells us, "I kind of knew about [Queens of the Stone Age] and I would hear stuff and I would go, 'Kind of fresh, kind of quirky.' I needed to come up with the goods and make a really good record and somebody said, 'Josh Homme might do something with you.' So then I really researched him." Iggy will be backed by Homme, Dean Fertita -- who plays with both Queens and The Dead Weather -- and Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders when he kicks off a short run of dates in Seattle on March 28th. They'll wrap up the 13-date North American leg in Los Angeles on April 28th and head to Europe a week later.

Does Tropical Gothclub signal a Dead Weather reunion? Can The Paranoyds pierce the zeitgeist in the same way TMR finds such as Margo Price have done so in the past? Can James find it in him to successfully pronounce each member of the Bobby Weir band's names correctly? The answers to these questions and much more await you in this special 2022 retrospective, and we'd like to extend a huge thanks to Mr. Blackwell for not only appearing once more on the show but for all the wonderful art he helped bring into the world this year. Cheers to Third Man, and cheers to 2023 — Happy New Year, everybody! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This episode explores the return of the Raconteurs with their third album, Help Us Stranger. We then take a listen through Boarding House Reach, the third solo album by Jack White, a wild departure from the known.--Jack White rose to legendary musician status via his breakthrough band, The White Stripes. Coming out as a blues rock, punk aesthetic garage rock band with child-like drummer Meg White, The White Stripes paved the way for a lot of acts to come. As their success grew, Jack White branched out into other projects, including the classic rock inspired "super group" The Raconteurs, and Led Zeppelin-spirit revival, hard as nails "super group," The Dead Weather. As Jack gained momentum elsewhere, The White Stripes came to an end, leaving room for Jack White to explore a solo career. Throughout his solo career, he started honing his comfort material -- country, blues, and fuzz rock -- moving toward new grounds with experimental noise, high tech production, and unexpected plot twists.Tyler, being a conseur of pop and knower of all things music, and Greg, a Jack White super fan, have a lot to say on Jack White, including a plethora of insights and context into the creation of this music, the cultural impact of Jack White and his embedded philosophies, and the growth of self and artist.

Our special series on the music of Jack White wraps up with a look at the 2022 two album releases, Fear of the Dawn and Entering Heaven Alive. Fear of the Dawn is much closer of a follow up to the experimentation we loved on Boarding House Reach. In this episode, we look at the the follow up to Dead Weather's first album, sophomore drop Sea of Cowards. This album is more or less of the same ilk to the former album, showing iterations of what works and even what doesn't about the group. Nonetheless, this band was known for incredible live shows and electric energy. The next album we look at is the solo debut of Jack White. Just before 2011's Blunderbuss was released, the White Stripes announced they would not be coming back. This meant that Jack White was no longer tied to band with self-imposed limitations -- he was the conductor, and fully able to expand his ideas. It would become clear that there is a difference between a song written as Jack White for the White Stripes, and the songs Jack would write in the studio with studio musicians. Jack would be criticized for leaving his Little Room, but this moment was earned time and time again, and the album has some of Jack's best moments.--Jack White rose to legendary musician status via his breakthrough band, The White Stripes. This episode covers both Jack White projects outside of the White Stripes, The Raconteurs and Dead Weather respectively. The Raconteurs follow-up album, Consolers of the Lonely (2008), was made after the band had toured together and developed their chemistry and as band. This album takes risks, rushing to the finish line for both better and worse.Next would be the debut of Led Zepplin-esque revival band, centered around sex and death, The Dead Weather. Another super group of sorts, Allison Mosshart of the Kills is on vocals, with Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stone Age on guitar, Jack Lawrence of The Raconteurs/Greenhorns on bass, and Jack White on drums. Jack was originally a drummer, and his chops are insane -- but this was a wild card, totally unexpected. And yet, it works so, so well. --Jack White rose to legendary musician status via his breakthrough band, The White Stripes. For the third episode, we are looking at Jack White's first major side project, the Raconteurs. While Jack wouldn't embrace the label of side project or super group, the Raconteurs were a departure from what people knew of Jack White. With fellow singer/songwriter Brendan Benson, and the bass and drummer from The Greenhorns, Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler respectively, The Raconteurs created a rounded, refreshing project over the course of many years culminating in a 10 track album. After a year of touring, Jack would return to the White Stripes for another album -- what would be the last album. 2007's Icky Thump is both a return to the fundamentals of the White Stripes and a departure into the strange, all at once. Jack and Meg had really turned over every stone in their little room to great effect.--Jack White rose to legendary musician status via his breakthrough band, The White Stripes. This next episode captures the peak of White Stripes fame and adoration, with the albums Elephant (2003) and Get Behind Me Satan (2005). Elephant was often accused of saving rock and roll, with flying guitar solos, incredible production, and top notch song writing -- the ubiquity of Seven Nation Army is undeniable. Two years later, the much anticipated Get Behind Me Satan released. It started with a fake out in the form of Blue Orchid, a power rocker near Seven Nation Army heights. But the rest of the album featured acoustic guitars, Steinway piano, marimba, mandolin, and folksy sincerity. It was a tortured process for the White Stripes, but there's a lot to mine here.--Jack White rose to legendary musician status via his breakthrough band, The White Stripes.
Alison Mosshart is always in motion. Whether she's performing with The Kills or The Dead Weather, painting, making videos of her travels - she's always creating and moving. We caught up on a recent Saturday evening while a crazy storm was passing through her adopted hometown of Nashville. Crazy to think its been one year since we went into pandemic lockdown. We talk about what she's been up to over the last 12 months, battling stir craziness and taking 4 road trips across the country, talking to our moms during the pandemic, Bob Dylan's new album, favorite Nashville restaurants, Nick Cave & Warren Ellis' new album, encouraging friends to get vaxxed, falling in love with music and following Fugazi on tour. The Kills are also celebrating the 10 year anniversary of their album Blood Pressures! Give it a listen!!
If you ask Chainflower what kind of music they create, their response may surprise you. “Savagely unique,” they'll say, which turns out to be the perfect description for the rising band's personal brand of insightful modern rock. Their aggressive sound has been hailed as a modern rock and roll cocktail sparkling with influences of Led Zeppelin, Evanescence, Paramore, Stone Temple Pilots, The Dead Weather, The Pretty Reckless, Black Sabbath and The Runaways. Coming from Los Angeles, the prodigious band was destined for rock stardom long before they signed a distribution deal with Universal Music Group Distribution/Hood Associates Records and racked up positive reviews in the press with only a handful of songs out at the time. After Chainflower released two critically acclaimed EPs, they became “a modern touchstone for a new crop of rock artists,” as College Music Journal noted, adding that “the blast radius of Chainflower is expansive.” NeuFutur went on to say, “Chainflower is gritty and hard-hitting with a complexity that few in this style have. There are nods to the Detroit rock scene, the 80s goth of Sisters of Mercy, and just enough punk rock to keep things going at breakneck speed. While they could easily succeed in the grunge 90s, the time for Chainflower is now.” I Am Entertainment continued, “Chainflower is able to create rough and tumble rock that has enough catchiness to merit serious radio play. The guitars sizzle while the intense vocals and splashy drums shine, effectively tattooing their music deep in the hearts of those listening.” Inspired by rock icons Led Zeppelin, Blondie, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Killing Joke, Soundgarden, Queens of the Stone Age, Iggy Pop and more, Chainflower guitarist, songwriter, producer and founder Kelly Wheeler, created a vision of music and art that has driven the new band to major recognition in the music industry. Kelly has also gained success with recording and live appearances alongside other legendary artists from iconic bands including Jane's Addiction, Berlin, Tool and Guns 'N Roses. Kelly is also the artist and director of Chainflower visuals from album art to concert posters to music videos. Kelly's recent search for a new singer led him to acclaimed vocalist, songwriter and recording artist, Syd Duran. While signed to Hollywood Records, Syd landed her first tour opening for the Jonas Brothers. She has opened for the epic rock band Korn and performed at major music festivals with Avenged Sevenfold, Godsmack, Disturbed, Sevendust and Lita Ford. Syd's powerful vocals received national headlines as the featured artist on Breaking Benjamin's popular single “Blow Me Away”, hitting number 5 on the Billboard Rock Charts and heard in the Halo 2 original soundtrack. Syd's solo work and recent single “Dust and Bone” continues to be featured on major TV networks and national commercials, including FIFA Women's World Cup, 20/20, The Walking Dead, 68 Whiskey, American Gods, Total Bellas, ABC, E!, FOX and MTV. After writing and recording new songs scheduled for release this year, Kelly and Syd were introduced to drummer Raanen Bozzio by good friend and world-renowned drummer, Ryan Brown, who suggested that Raanen join them on Chainflower's journey. Raanen Bozzio is the powerful drummer and son of drumming legend Terry Bozzio. Surrounded by music growing up, Raanen started playing professionally at age 11. He has recorded and shared the stage with many prominent artists including Cypress Hill, Wednesday 13, Periphery, Weed Eater, The Memorials, Orgy, Fact Pattern, and Lords of the Damned. Raanen is endorsed by Sabian Cymbals, DW Drums, Promark Drumsticks and Evans Drumheads.
