If you were about to turn 50 and could go see five bands in concert, who would they be and why?As the Dads discuss this conundrum, they get distracted and end up talking about Sparks. Who is Sparks? Only one of the most influential bands of the past five decades. They've inspired Joy Division, Queen and Bjork, collaborated with Giorgio Morodor, Franz Ferdinand and members of the Go-Gos, and were even name checked in a Paul McCartney video. These two inscrutable brothers from Southern California have been one step ahead of the musical zeitgeist of the time for years.Come join The New Dad Rock and they explore Sparks. And when you're done listening to the episode, tune into their Edgar Wright-directed documentary. In the meantime, click on any of the links for a taste of Sparks. Hallo zusammen!
Such good music and reminiscence...
Special guest Dave Weigel joins Discord & Rhyme once again to talk about Sparks, “your favorite band's favorite band.” It's been a good couple of decades for Ron and Russell Mael. After decades of toiling in semi-obscurity, the brothers saw a late-career renaissance in 2002 with the symphonic, beatless dance album Lil' Beethoven, and Edgar Wright's 2021 documentary The Sparks Brothers cemented their status as elder statesmen of irreverent pop music. For today's episode, Producer Mike is taking us back to the band's early years with the 1974 album Kimono My House, which demonstrates that the Maels' sense of songcraft was in full force from the very beginning. Despite what the interviewees in The Sparks Brothers (including Dave!) might tell you, Sparks aren't for everybody, and the Maels occasionally revel in being grating in a way that even our hosts can't abide. But if you listen to “This Town Ain't Big Enough for the Both of Us” and adore it, good news: this is only the beginning of a gloriously warped musical journey.Cohosts: Mike DeFabio, John McFerrin, Dan Watkins, Dave WeigelComplete show notes: https://discordpod.com/listen/097-sparks-kimono-my-house-1974Support the podcast! https://www.patreon.com/discordpod

Edgar Wright's been making movies since he was 14, but he never really made it until age 40, because that's when Tom and Neil finally did an episode on his filmography. We go through everything from his first, low budget film "A Fistful of Dollars" to his most recent film "Last Night in Soho." Along the way we talk The Three Flavors Cornetto Trilogy (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, The World's End), the almost made Edgar Wright Ant-Man, the last Kevin Spacey role before his downfall (Baby Driver), and the wild pop rock documentary "The Sparks Brothers." Naturally, we also crap on JJ Abrams.
Edgar Wright is an English filmmaker. He is known for his signature editing style that includes transitions, whip pans and wipes. In 2004, He directed the zombie comedy Shaun of the Dead, starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, the first film in the "Three Flavours Cornetto" trilogy. The film was co-written with Pegg—as were the next two entries in the trilogy, the buddy cop film Hot Fuzz (2007) and the science fiction comedy The World's End (2013).Edgar comes to Twiggy's podcast shortly after his film "Last Night In Soho" comes to home screening and his documentary "The Sparks Brothers" comes to Netflix. The music for the podcast is Twiggy's version of "Waterloo Sunset" by the Kinks and can be found on Apple Music at this link https://music.apple.com/gb/album/romantically-yours/693460953If you've enjoyed listening to “Tea With Twiggy” please give take a moment to give us a lovely 5 STAR rating on Apple Podcasts. THE SPARKS BROTHERS is a documentary recounting the history of the band Sparks. Sparks has released 25 albums in 50 years. Led by the brother duo of Russell and Ron Mael, it's survived an unbelievable rollercoaster ride of ups and downs. The movie asks how a band can be both highly acclaimed by critics and musicians and yet be vastly underrated by the public. To answer this question, it uses interviews with dozens of celebrities including the singer Beck, “Weird Al” Yankovic and star bassist Flea. The interviews show viewers the high esteem that the music industry has for Sparks. The movie uses a stream of archival footage and performance imagery to bring its story to life.
"The Sparks Brothers Podcast" concludes with this 4th episode. It's been a great ride and we hope this content has been as influential on modern music as Sparks, itself. "The Sparks Brothers" film director, Edgar Wright, adds some final thoughts on the continued inspiration of Sparks, the band, as well as the friendship he has built with both Maels, as regular people. As Ron and Russell look the future and their next musical ideas, they share their thoughts on contemporary music production, and what they learned from the masters who helmed their earlier releases (Giorgio Moroder, Todd Rundgren, Tony Visconti, Muff Winwood and others). More details about "The Sparks Brothers" film, and where to see it, are online at https://www.focusfeatures.com/the-sparks-brothers

So, if you've ever wondered what it would be like to be a half of a singing duo, either one of two brothers, you can be either the super cute singer, or the odd gangly keyboardist with a mustache that's a cross between Charlie Chaplin and Hitler, and you and your brother wrote and sang lots of absurdist songs, and you've been at it for five decades with 25 albums and 345 songs, and you've got a definite following, and you've been on American Bandstand, and you've appeared in a really bad movie about blowing up rollercoasters, and you're respected by many for your creative vision and the fact you're both still at it, but you and your brother never really hit the big time, then this podcast is for you!

It's another bin fire of a week, but rest assured we're here to help! Myf and Zan read all the stuff so you don't have to, and hopefully give you a good laugh along the way. Someone called Crime Stoppers on Barnaby Joyce (and we want to meet them), while IKEA are celebrating Pride Month with some very unique Loveseats. An editorial on “lookism” has us intrigued; can a symmetrical face get you further in life? And Architectural Digest delivers once again, this time visiting Cara Delevingne's ridiculously pimped house which features a vagina tunnel. Meanwhile Myf is watching a long doco on cult musical duo Sparks, while Zan is having the beef with black bean sauce please, on Chopsticks or Fork. I Predict that When I'm With You, there will be no Existential Threat unless we're Eaten By The Monster Of Love in this Cool World.Welcome to episode 86 of See Hear Podcast.Edgar Wright has been known to use music to great effect in his narrative films, so it's only appropriate that he makes a music-related documentary. The Sparks Brothers tells the tale of brothers Ron and Russell Mael who as Sparks have been writing and recording albums for nearly 5 decades. Unlike so many musicians who had an initial creative flourish then lose sight of their muse, the Maels are still creating great music right up to today.Due to a peculiar turn of events, Tim, Bernard and Maurice handed the keys to the See Hear car over to friends of the show Mike White of the Projection Booth Podcast and musician / documentarian Skizz Cyzyk. These guys are the best, and we felt completely comfortable leaving the show in their professional hands. As a bonus, Mike also presents an interview with the film's editor Paul Trewartha. It's a fascinating discussion about his involvement with the film as well as the editing process in general. The regular crew will definitely be back next month to carry on with regular podcast shenanigans (which may be bad news if you've enjoyed the high standard brought by Mike and Skizz). One of the most dynamic filmmakers working in the industry, Edgar Wright, is making a documentary about the band Sparks. All three are joining today to discuss this film, The Sparks Brothers! In this episode, we talk about… How Edgar Wright and Ron and Russell Mael (of Sparks) met over Twitter and ultimately decided to make a documentary about the band. How the group approached making the documentary so that it would have Wright's stamp on it, rather than being dry like many other documentaries. How Wright thought about using a Sparks song in Hot Fuzz, but didn't because their songs demand so much attention. How Wright's and Sparks' artistic sensibilities align. How music operates as a part of Wright's process. Artistic influences for Sparks on their music and creative process. Influences on Wright both for general filmmaking and on his approach in creating a music documentary.
