Albert Hammond Jr. first rose to prominence as the lead guitarist of The Strokes—a band at the forefront of New York City's indie rock renaissance in the early aughts. In 2007 Albert Hammond Jr. launched his solo career, putting his songwriting and abilities as a frontman to the test. He's now released five albums, including, Melodies On Hiatus, which came out just a couple months ago. It's a double album that he co-wrote with Canadian singer Simon Wilcox, and features collaborations with GoldLink and Matt Helders from the Arctic Monkeys. On today's episode, Albert Hammond Jr. and Justin Richmond talk about how he was dramatically impacted by his parents' recent divorce, despite the fact that he's in his early 40's. Albert also reminisces about his past life as a champion roller skater who was once scouted by Kristi Yamaguchi's Olympic ice skating coach. And he explains why he'd never been a fan of Radiohead or Led Zeppelin. You can hear a playlist of some of our favorite Albert Hammond Jr. songs HERE. Iggy Pop is back with a new album. Titled Post Pop Depression, it was produced by Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age. Asked why he chose Josh, Iggy tells us, "I kind of knew about [Queens of the Stone Age] and I would hear stuff and I would go, 'Kind of fresh, kind of quirky.' I needed to come up with the goods and make a really good record and somebody said, 'Josh Homme might do something with you.' So then I really researched him." Iggy will be backed by Homme, Dean Fertita -- who plays with both Queens and The Dead Weather -- and Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders when he kicks off a short run of dates in Seattle on March 28th. They'll wrap up the 13-date North American leg in Los Angeles on April 28th and head to Europe a week later.

Shapel Lacey sits down with Arctic Monkeys drummer, Matt Helders to discuss the progression from his band's early days until now. Matt also breaks down Shapel's drumming ability. Plus Shapel tries not to bring up Oasis every time he opens his mouth.

Here at Demo Tapes, nothing fascinates us more than someone going solo from a band - particularly if it isn't the frontman. So we were delighted to get Ed Cosens on the show, on the week that the Reverend and the Makers guitarist released his brilliant debut solo album, 'Fortunes Favour'.It's an entertaining trip down memory lane with one of Sheffield's most unsung musical heroes - Ed talks to us about how he needed to find the confidence to strike out on his own and the high points of his 16-year career as the musical driving force behind RATM. He also reminisces about being in Alex Turner and Matt Helders' first pre-Arctic Monkeys band Judan Suki and also being the "yin to the yang" of best mate and RATM frontman Jon McClure. Also answered on this episode: what do you get if you cross Liam Gallagher with Gail Platt from Coronation Street? Episode 53: Via Hillsborough, Please (ft Andy Nicholson)Starting with three Sheffield kids who had one guitar between them, Arctic Monkeys rise to becoming the most culturally significant British band of their era was not just unlikely but also uniquely fascinating. Having played as bassist in the creation of the 2006 classic 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not', which remains the fastest selling debut album in UK history, Andy Nicholson joins Episode 53 of The Michael Anthony Show in an open and insightful appearance. Nicholson, who is back making music under the sobriquet 'Goldteeth', sheds light on the origins of the rock band which he formed with childhood friends Alex Turner and Matt Helders and for the first time goes into detail regarding his abrupt departure from the four piece just before the release of their iconic second album, 'Favourite Worst Nightmare'.The diehard Sheffield United Fan discusses regrets, mental health, fame, the state of modern music and his hopes for the future in a discussion that will grip any music lover. The Arctic Monkeys started out as more of an aspiration than an actual band--its members were teenagers who had just started playing their instruments. But--after gaining some online notoriety--the band was catapulted to massive popularity, releasing a string of number one albums in their native UK. Matt Helders talks to Joe about: growing up in Sheffield; struggling with feelings of "unearned" success early in the band's career; evolving as an artist; the thrilling fear of writing his solo album; and working with the great Iggy Pop on his acclaimed Post Pop Depression album.
American Valhalla, co directed by Homme and Andreas Neumann tells the story of an unlikely musical collaboration between two mavericks of American rock: Joshua Homme, frontman of Queens of the Stone Age and Iggy Pop, the Godfather of Punk. The film, co-directed by Homme, follows the recording of Iggy’s final album ‘Post Pop Depression’ in the California desert, with his band comprising of Homme, his QOTSA bandmate Dean Fertita and Arctic Monkeys’ drummer, Matt Helders, as well as the explosive tour that builds to a crowning performance at London’s iconic Royal Albert Hall. Featuring stunning cinematography and intimate access, American Valhalla reveals the growth of an intense bond between the musicians who have taken to heart the mantra: "you risk nothing you gain nothing. As we got to know each other, you blew my mind” Homme tells Pop in the film. “You really came with such an open mind and saying ‘Yeah, I know what I’ve done but I’m here to…look forward.’” As they prepared the tour to support the album, Iggy received news of the passing of David Bowie – his longtime friend and confidant. In these moments, Pop contemplates his own impermanence and, at his most vulnerable, pushes harder with carpe diem-resolve to rehearse and add the next great landmark to his legacy. http://www.americanvalhallamovie.com
