Send us a textThis week on the podcast, the boys are fired up—Happy Gilmore 2 just dropped on Netflix, and Steeler Training Camp is in full swing. The team cut Cordarrelle Patterson, and Tomlin's doing damage control. Back in the ‘Burgh, we've got a hill-climber on McKnight Road, lemonade entrepreneurs triggering Squirrel Hill snitches, and one local Brother In Arms who held a stranger's hand after a crash until paramedics got there. Also, we give props to the first class of Pittsburgh's Walk of Fame—and yes, we have thoughts on who should've made the cut. Then it's time for the chaos: A Philly fan gets caught flickin' the bean at Yankee Stadium, a pastor scams $3.4 million “because God told him to,” and A.I. is making LeBron pregnant (seriously). We debate if Mario and Peach are just “really good friends,” if we'd trust a porn site with our ID, and whether a boss's coffee cup test makes him a genius or a corndick. Joe recaps his adventurous weekend. We react to the incredible poem written by Dave Parker that his son recited yesterday at the HOF. Will there be another Pirate in the HOF? The Pirates have squandered another great Skenes season. Fans shouldn't be hesitant to trade Keller for a bat. Steven Kwan and Jarren Duran are possible targets. The Cubs could also move a top prospect for Keller. Now is the time to take some risks. Joe didn't have cell service for almost a full week. We agree that cell phones have ruined the world. Skenes ERA is unparalleled in the past century. A caller points out that the Pirates gave Parker a million dollars. A caller blames the hitting coach. An update on Bubba Chandler. A caller is ornery about trading Mitch Keller. There's always going to be uncertainty trading for a hitter who hasn't been proven in the MLB. Does Roman Wilson need to show he can be a contributor in the receiving corps next to DK Metcalf and Calvin Austin III? And are Cordarrelle Patterson and Connor Heyward fighting for their jobs? Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's how the trade to acquire tight end Jonnu Smith has continued an offseason-long trend of catering to the personality and scheme of offensive coordinator Arthur Smith -- putting the pressure on him to increase the performance of his offense. The Steelers acquired Smith, making him the third former Smith protege on the current roster, joining Cordarrelle Patterson and Scotty Miller. In addition to players that have played for Smith before, the Steelers have also made moves to help better fit his scheme, grabbing Aaron Rodgers instead of Russell Wilson and drafting Kaleb Johnson instead of keeping Najee Harris. Smith did a good job last year in his first season as the Steelers offensive coordinator, but the unprecedented level of service to his scheme and personality fit this offseason definitely ramps up the pressure to be an above-average offense in 2025. Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's the play of the Steelers kickoff return unit. When the NFL made the change this offseason to its kickoff rules to emulate the XFL kickoff that we've seen all season, Omar Khan and Mike Tomlin wasted little time, signing Cordarrelle Patterson to a two-year contract that very day. Patterson is a four-time All-Pro kickoff returner, was a member of the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team, and has gone over 1,000 all-purpose yards in a season nine times. But for whatever reason, it hasn't been working for the 32-year-old this season. Of players with at least 10 kickoff returns, Patterson is dead last with a 21.8 yards per return average. The Steelers as a team are also 32nd in kickoff returns, even though fellow returner Jaylen Warren has done better than Patterson. What went wrong and how can the Steelers fix it? Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's the rollout of a package of plays for backup quarterback Justin Fields against the Cleveland Browns on Thursday night. Fields played in seven snaps of offense, rushing three times for 26 yards and attempting one pass that was incomplete. The Steelers' struggles in the red zone and in short yardage under Russell Wilson have been well documented, so in many ways, a package of plays for Fields made sense. But the Steelers didn't use him in those areas, eschewing Fields on a 4th and 1 for a handoff to Jaylen Warren and using Wilson on a two-point conversion to throw a fade route to Cordarrelle Patterson. The plays they did use Fields were a confused mess, with one procedure penalty and another play where the Steelers barely got the snap off and everyone's timing was disrupted. The Steelers can certainly use the talents of a player like Fields, but not in the manner displayed on Thursday night. Alan breaks it down. Learn more about your ad choices.
