The Buffalo Bills have made minimal moves through this offseason in addressing the defensive tackle position. Brandon Beane signed Larry Ogunjobi, however, Ogunjobi will be facing a 6 game suspension to start the season. DaQuan Jones, Ed Oliver, and second year player DeWayne Carter are currently expected to be meaningful contributors to the Bills interior defensive line in 2025. Fans, analysts, and media pundits are largely in agreement that the Bills must address defensive tackle early in the NFL Draft. Alex Brasky Talks Bills vs Ravens & Legacy Game For Sean McDermott

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Batavia Daily News sports editor Alex Brasky to go over several critical points one more time before the Buffalo Bills take on the Baltimore Ravens in elimination playoff football Sunday, including examining how much of a legacy game this is for Bills head coach Sean McDermott. Alex has been at One Bills Drive all week as the Bills prepare for Baltimore on Sunday and Patrick asks him to describe what the vibe's been like there, as Buffalo is in the unusual spot of being a home underdog despite not having a loss all season in Orchard Park. How much does that Week four game when Baltimore pounded Buffalo play a part on the betting line so many months later? It's certainly for health and injury reasons. The guys talk about how much heathier Buffalo is coming into this game compared to earlier this season against Baltimore and last year at this time in their three point AFC divisional playoff heartbreaking loss to Kansas City. Also, Alex has thoughts on how much of a legacy game this is for McDermott. The Bills head coach has a 6-6 playoff record but has often got stuck at this point of the postseason. He's often compared by Bills fans to Marty Schottenheimer, an unfair comparison and it's discussed how best-case we may be seeing with Sean what happened with Bill Cowher and Tony Dungy years ago. Regardless, the guys talk about how important a win would be to his legacy and how much another loss in this round may tarnish it. That plus the significance of Ed Oliver and DaQuan Jones playing great for Buffalo on Sunday, who much the weather and home field should matter, a couple of Bills X-factors and plenty more. You can follow Alex on Twitter @AlexBrasky and check out his work at the Batavia Daily News. Bills vs Ravens Preview, Keys To Winning & Bold Predictions

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran brings a full playoff preview of the Buffalo Bills hosting the Baltimore Ravens in the divisional round Sunday in Orchard Park, including keys to a Bills victory, bold predictions for the game and a stab at picking the final score. With the seasons Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson have had, it almost felt like fate that the two would meet in the postseason. Unfortunately the quarterback that loses is probably going to have some narratives unfairly raised about them, as Patrick explains. Hopefully for the Bills the rematch goes better than the first meeting back in Week four when the Ravens pounded Buffalo in prime time, 35-10. Patrick offers plenty of perspective looking back at the game, from the Bills injuries to as assortment of other things that went wrong. From there it's some talk about both teams before settling into Buffalo's biggest keys to victory, which unquestionably revolve around the Bills defensive tackle tandem of Ed Oliver and DaQuan Jones. Plus, can the Bills win this game if Allen doesn't have the better day than Jackson? Bold predictions include a big day for a pair of Buffalo boundary receivers, a defensive star player performing like one and possibly the most juiciest bold prediction we've had on the show the entire year. That plus a gutsy final score prediction and much more. Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. The Bills went undefeated at home during the regular season for only the third time in franchise history and first since 1990, the first year the Bills went to the Super Bowl. They also discuss several players that had big impacts on the game for Buffalo--ranging from Greg Rousseau to Ed Oliver, Amari Cooper and Keon Coleman. Also Matt Milano had a few big plays in his fourth start of the season, did he do enough to gain confidence in him starting over Dorian Williams going into the playoffs? As far as the Jets, they looked like a team that quit once the game started to get away from them, in particular Aaron Rodgers, who Patrick goes as far to call disinterested. That and plenty more. Buffalo Bills Biggest Week 15 Takeaways

Moran-Alytics Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 17, 2024 51:34

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran has his biggest Buffalo Bills Week 15 takeaways on the heels of an absolutely wild 48-42 victory on the road over the Detroit Lions that has the Bills feeling really good about being 11-3 going into the final three weeks. Unlike last week in Los Angeles where Buffalo's offense was in desperation mode trying to catch up and in the game late, Buffalo dominated on both sides of the ball early to jump out to a two touchdown lead and never looked back, despite Detroit's resiliency throughout the second half. Patrick starts by giving a lot of credit to head coach Sean McDermott and his coaching staff---it was obvious from the first snap of the game that this team came to Motown prepared to play and ready to fight. The defense showed grit in allowing Buffalo to stake an early two score lead and offensively Joe Brady had the Lions defense in guess mode throughout. As for Josh Allen, Patrick struggles to even put in words how special this 2024 season has turned into for him. You can't find an outlet anywhere at this point that doesn't think Allen isn't the MVP of the league and Patrick takes it one step further, saying he may be the most physically gifted football player at his position in the history of the game. Removing all the stats and accolades away Patrick hammers home how important it is for Bills fans to just sit back and enjoy being able to watch someone like Josh play every Sunday, it's not something to take for granted. Patrick also talks about a Bills defense that obviously struggled but did enough to win and more specifically, Ed Oliver having one of the best games of his entire career a week after being called out all over the place, including this podcast. Also, should Dorian Williams being getting more snaps, even if it comes at the expense of Matt Milano? That plus Tyler Bass pisses us off again, Dawson Knox comes through bit, Kaiir Elam fills in admirably and tons more. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, it's another edition of The Podbag, where listeners control the narrative and topics for the show and Patrick Moran responds to several questions and takes focused primarily on the Buffalo Bills with a little Sabres sprinkled in as well. The Bills loss last week at Los Angeles was just one game and the team's still sitting at pretty at 10-3. However, the embarrassing performance by the defense has plenty people worries---and a little angry. Patrick responds to a take that Ed Oliver is basically the same type of player that Gabe Davis was, a comparison Patrick tends to agree with. There's arguments made that the Bills defense isn't Super Bowl caliber and that not having any true game wrecker will come back to haunt them in January. Fans also are down on head coach Sean McDermott this week and one listener points out that any talk of McDermott being in the mix for NFL Coach of the Year went out the window last week on the west coast, while another claims that bashing McDermott is just masking how badly the defense played in addition to the costly blocked punt. Patrick's also asked what remains the biggest Bills mystery this year, does Saquon Barkley have a chance for MVP, what NFL retirement hit him the hardest, some strong Sabres takes and what he'd like for Christmas. That plus what fans would immediately change if they were named NFL commissioner and plenty more. Buffalo Bills Biggest Week 14 Takeaways

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran goes over several of his biggest Buffalo Bills takeaways after their seven-game winning streak ended in Los Angeles on Sunday despite an unprecedented six total touchdowns without a turnover from Josh Allen. Allen's day was historic, literally but it wasn't enough to overcome the disgraceful performance from his defense, special teams and coaching. Patrick breaks down so many of the things that went wrong to spoil their offense dominance, including key defensive players like Ed Oliver, Greg Rousseau, Taron Johnson, Rasul Douglas and even Christian Benford being no shows. Patrick's annoyance with Oliver is reaching its peak--how does a guy with this much perceived talent and play making ability have one sack for the entire season? Special teams has been an underlying problem quite often this season and none so more than this game, with Reid Ferguson being directly responsible for six Rams points. As for Sean McDermott, Patrick explains why he did himself no favors from the critics who think he's a choke artist in big moments of games. While McDermott certainly isn't nor should be in danger of losing his job, it's fair to be wary of the Bills ever getting over the hump with the types of in-game decisions the head coach often makes. As for Allen, Patrick talks about how the MVP race is now essentially over and goes one step further, saying that Allen's the best player in the NFL right now. That plus other guys stepping up on offense, some big picture perspective and much more. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Matt Warren of SB Nation for their weekly chat, this time focused on several of the biggest keys for the Buffalo Bills as they hit the stretch run of what's been a successful regular season through this point. The Bills are 9-2 and for all intents and purposes have already wrapped up the AFC east for a fifth straight season. That's well and good but this is a football team that has its sights set higher than just winning their division. The guys go over some of the biggest factors that await them in their quest to get over the hump and win an AFC championship. Some of the topics are quite obviously, especially Josh Allen continuing to play at a MVP level and the team getting some long overdue injury luck deep into the season. But there's other key factors as well, including Ed Oliver and the defensive tackles continue to ascend as the season goes on, Dalton Kincaid putting up the production we expected before the season started in September, the safety play remaining at least steady and not having a game potentially decided by a kick, even if Tyler Bass did drill a franchise-record 61-yarder to beat Miami a few weeks ago. They also spend some time examining the AFC, including a discussion on if they'd prefer Buffalo to face Denver or Miami in the first round. Patrick also has an unpopular opinion about the Kansas City Chiefs and much more. Buffalo Bills Biggest Week 11 Takeaways

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran's going over his biggest Buffalo Bills Week 11 takeaways following Buffalo's takedown over previously unbeaten Kansas City to go into their bye with a 9-2 record for the first time in 32 years. It was an entertaining back and forth game that came down to a few plays, as is always the case when these teams collide. Patrick devotes time to giving Bills head coach Sean McDermott a lot of credit. The Bills were supposed to be a team in transition this season following the exodus of many core players. That coupled with the injuries they've dealt with already makes their 9-2 start all the more remarkable. Plenty of that comes from McDermott's system and having this team ready to play nearly every week. Sean's decision to go for it on a critical fourth down play late in the game may have felt obvious given the circumstance but it's not a choice Sean might've made in the past. He's grown along with a lot of the players on this team. Of course, players make the plays and none are doing it better than Josh Allen this season. Patrick has commentary on why Sunday showed him Josh is the league's MVP through 11 weeks. He also talks about Amari Cooper coming up huge, every team in the league needing a Khalil Shakir, O'Cyrus Torrence being an unsung hero for his work against Chris Jones, Ed Oliver being a menace, Terrell Bernard making big plays, depth yet again shining for Buffalo and much more. What a great way to go into the bye week, Buffalo! ♦♦♦♦♦ Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast  Substack: Patrick Moran's Substack Twitter:  @PatrickMoranTB Facebook: Talking Buffalo Podcast  Learn more about your ad choices. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Buffalo Bills beat reporter Matt Parrino to go over their biggest Week Nine takeaways following the Buffalo Bills exciting victory over Miami on Sunday in addition to a conversation about athlete parenting and more. It certainly wasn't easy facing a Dolphins team that knew any slim chance they had of getting back into the AFC east race hinged on them upsetting the Bills in Orchard Park. In the end though, Tyler Bass set a franchise-record with a 61 yard game-winning field goal and the Bills not only improved to 7-2 but put themselves where they'd need a total face plant to not win their fifth consecutive AFC east crown. Matt's as entrenched with covering the team full time and has thoughts on many of Patrick's biggest takeaways from this week, including the wild (wild!) ride Tyler Bass went on, Sean McDermott showing confidence in a spot other coaches probably wouldn't have, Josh Allen staying patience paying off, a tip of the cap to Mack Hollins and focusing on a defense that other than a singular Taron Johnson effort got largely dismantled by the Miami offense. In particular Patrick thought the defensive tackle play led by Ed Oliver was extremely lousy. Does Matt agree? The guys also have a discussion about how protective parents of athletes can be and sometimes go a little overboard. Patrick feels that's the case recently after a social media incident involving him and Damar Hamlin's father. Matt shares his thoughts and the guys talk about relating to the parent in most cases. That and plenty more! Bills Dramatically Beat Miami (Live Reactions)

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Joe From Queens not long after the Buffalo Bills dramatically beat the Miami Dolphins, 30-27 on an improbable Tyler Bass 61-yard field goal in the wanning seconds to move 7-2 and end Miami's hopes for a divisional title before Election Day. It's safe to assume the last thing anyone expected Bass to do was win Buffalo the game, especially after missing an extra point and having another one bounce in through the uprights earlier in the game. But Bass not only the game-winning field goal but booted an all-time franchise record 61 yarder to do it. The guys talk this being one of the ultimate single-play redemption stories they can remember, as Patrick calls himself out for lambasting Bass on social media several times throughout the game. The Bills offense started slow but then got things heated up in the second half, scoring on their last four drives on a day they had to because the defense wasn't stopping anything. The guys talk about Josh Allen playing MVP caliber football in the second half without the services of Amari Cooper and having to consistently overcome their own mistakes, something they've done a lot of this season. The win is sweet but it was far from a perfect Sunday afternoon Patrick and Joe talked about a defense that other than one play from Taron Johnson mostly stunk, especially in the middle of the defense where both Ed Oliver and DaQuan Jones were eerily silent. Was it just one of those days or do the Bills have a serious problem in the middle of their defense? That plus some big picture stuff and much more. ♦♦♦♦♦ Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast  Substack: Patrick Moran's Substack Twitter:  @PatrickMoranTB Facebook: Talking Buffalo Podcast  Learn more about your ad choices. (Heated) Reactions Following Bills Loss In Houston

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Joe From Queens for plenty of (often heated) reaction on the heels of the Buffalo Bills losing to the Houston Texans on a last second 59-yard field goal, an ending marred by bad coaching. The Bills were on the road in a tough environment facing a very good Houston team. They fell behind early and appeared on the verge of being run out of the Stadium at halftime. Buffalo showed resiliency, especially on defense and battled back to tie the game in the final minutes. They fell apart in the end, largely because of some absurdly coaching decisions by Sean McDermott, first with time outs and then on play calls in the final minute. The guys have plenty to say about that and a coaching staff that looked the part the first three weeks but have definitely been exposed as flawed over the last two. They also have plenty to say about Josh Allen, who had one of if not his worst games as pro, certainly the worst he's looked throwing the football in at least a few years. He was bad and wasn't helped but by a wide receiver group that gave him no help and often looked pathetic in doing so. It certainly feels if the Bills are serious about trying to win the AFC this year and get to the Super Bowl, they need to trade for a quality wide receiver because that player is not currently on this roster. The guys discuss a defense that had some issues early but stepped up and gave the Bills a chance to win this game, a pretty valiant effort with Ed Oliver, Taron Johnson and Taylor Rapp. They go over some bright spots, look ahead to what now kinda feels like a must-win game in New Jersey next week, hit on the Sabres crappy start to their season and much more. ♦♦♦♦♦ Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast  Substack: Patrick Moran's Substack Twitter:  @PatrickMoranTB Facebook: Talking Buffalo Podcast  YouTube: Talking Buffalo Podcast YouTube Channel Learn more about your ad choices. What's Up With The Bills Defensive Tackles?

Moran-Alytics Podcast

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Matt Warren for SB Nations to discuss several Buffalo Bills and AFC topics, including a discussion of why the Bills interior defensive line is largely underachieving so far this season. The Bills have won three of their first four games and for the most the defense has played well. However, the defensive tackle has surprisingly been inconsistent if not a sore spot. Ed Oliver has looked ordinary at times and invisible at others while DaQuan Jones hasn't come close to the effective start he had over the first month last season, when it could be argued he was the team's defensive MVP early on. Patrick and Matt discuss both guys and try to figure out why they're not getting the production that at times becomes sorely missed, none so more than Sunday night in Baltimore when both were complete non-factors. They also discuss veteran addition Austin Johnson and third-round rookie DeWayne Carter getting off to very slow starts as well. Defensive tackle play wasn't the only area of this team that feels exposed on the hells of the Bills embarrassing loss in Baltimore Sunday night. The guys discuss why they think this team has both a safety and wide receiver problem, something that's been brewing since before the start of training camp. That said, the guys are careful to not completely overreact to one game and offer perspective on Buffalo winning three of their first four games. Matt also has some thoughts from around the league, including the Miami Dolphins being absolute toast already in the AFC east, the New York Jets a team that feels completely capable of imploding, the Kansas City Chiefs continuing to find ways to win every week, respect due to the Ravens and plenty more. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran offers his biggest takeaways after analyzing the Pro Football Focus grades and watching the game film of the Buffalo Bills season opening 34-28 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. It doesn't take a film expert or guru on any level to conclude the Bills are 1-0 this week because Josh Allen and Gregory Rousseau respectively both played like superstars. So much in fact that that Patrick barely spends any time during this episode discussing them. They were great---that's obvious. Instead Patrick dives into some other takeaways from the game both good and bad for Buffalo, highlighted by an unexpected (very) good game from Bills reserve defensive back Cam Lewis, who was pressed into action early after All-Pro cornerback Taron Johnson was injured just four minutes into the first quarter. Lewis played surprisingly great against then run and was good enough in pass defense as well and his performance went a long way towards keeping the Bills defense from completely falling apart. Conversely, Ed Oliver didn't just struggle but was downright invisible Sunday. Patrick talks about him in addition to the borderline shocking usage of the defensive line starters, success James Cook had running the football on first downs, Keon Coleman changing the mind quickly of critics, the safety position continuing to be worrisome and a breakdown of who was responsible on Buffalo's botched kickoff coverage play that allowed Arizona to stay in the game after the Bills went up two scores. That plus a big event coming to Imperial Pizza this week, a (very) quick look at Miami and what's on tap here at Talking Buffalo for the rest of the week plus much more. ♦♦♦♦♦ Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast  Substack: Patrick Moran's Substack Twitter:  @PatrickMoranTB Facebook: Talking Buffalo Podcast  YouTube: Talking Buffalo Podcast YouTube Channel Learn more about your ad choices. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by frenemy and recurring guest Joe From Queens to react to the good, bad and ugly of the Buffalo Bills season opening 34-28 victory over the Arizona Cardinals to kick off their 2024 campaign. Without question it was far more stressful than most figured it would be but in the end Buffalo pulled out a one score victory, overcoming an early 17-3 deficit in the first half where the Bills looked completely out of sorts in every aspect. The guys talk about how "double dipping" actually proved to be a huge turning point of the game and a defense that didn't show up in the first half bottle down Arizona and Kylar Murray in the second half. On the good side, Josh Allen is discussed as he showed why he's one of the best players in the league. Also, Greg Rousseau had one of if not his most impactful game as a pro on an afternoon where the defense desperately needed it in addition to a few UB kids stepping up in Cam Lewis and JaMarcus Ingram. On the bad side, Ed Oliver and the defensive tackles were essentially missing in action all day. Patrick has an Oliver rant for the ages. There was also some ugly to this game too, including a few terrible officiating calls, stupid penalties and the Bills kickoff coverage. This and much more from today's opener. ♦♦♦♦♦ Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast  Substack: Patrick Moran's Substack Twitter:  @PatrickMoranTB Facebook: Talking Buffalo Podcast  YouTube: Talking Buffalo Podcast YouTube Channel Learn more about your ad choices.
