Aline Piva, a researcher and journalist based in Sao Paulo, joined Misfit hosts Bob Schlehuber and Jamarl Thomas to explain the crisis brewing in Jair Bolsonaro’s government. She puts the current standoff between Bolsonaro and Sergio Moro in context, explains Bolsonaro’s undemocratic rise to power and how, despite pressure, he retains some key support, including that of the military, which has gained enormous power under his administration. She also breaks down the increase in violence against political opposition groups, the power the upper classes have to enforce their own rules against the less powerful, and the new approaches the left is taking in political and class struggles.Ajamu Baraka, national organizer of Black Alliance for Peace and former Green Party nominee for vice president of the US in 2016, spoke about ways to push back against the looming death march back to work the Trump administration is gearing up for. There’s no formula for this, he said, but that only means it’s a time to experiment, quickly and with energy, to see what does work to unify the opposition in the US. The good news is that people have learned a lot since the days of Occupy Wall Street, and are much more willing to look at political alternatives, including casting a critical eye on the entire corporate and labor structure of society. He makes the case for uniting anti-war voices with anti-imperialist movements, and argues that we’ll need international solidarity to truly challenge and upend global corporate capture of governments.Brandi Thompson Summers, assistant professor of geography at UC Berkeley, and author of “Black in Place: The Spatial Aesthetics of Race in a Post-Chocolate City,” explained how the commodification of ideas of blackness and coolness helps enact the violence of displacement and gentrification, and how ignoring the realities of black experiences and needs allows blackness to become a signifier rather than a powerful political reality. . The hosts also discuss American policing, why police are so often the only members of our society to engage with people who are traumatized and on edge, and how those engagements so often end in death.

Dr. Jack Rasmus, economist, radio show host and author of “The Scourge of Neoliberalism: US Economic Policy from Reagan to Trump,” explained the funhouse mirror that is Wall Street and why people should ignore it. The real economic state can be seen in our unemployment, real investment and housing crises, and it’s grim. If and when the financial sector cracks, a cycle of defaults could tip us into Great Depression territory, and the Federal Reserve is engaged in an unprecedented experiment to try to stave it off. But we can’t blame this instability on the virus alone ‒ this corporate debt pileup has been accruing for years, and the virus is a great excuse to wipe it out, at the expense of everyone else. Don’t expect a new normal after that kind of fleecing, he warns, but prepare for a push for the cruelest austerity packages yet. Political analyst, writer and president of ReThinking Foreign Policy, Mitchell Plitnick joined Misfit hosts Bob Schlehuber and Jamarl Thomas to discuss the diplomatic protests against Israel’s plans to annex more of the West Bank this summer and the International Criminal Court’s reiteration of its position that Palestine is correctly classified as a state for the purposes of investigating war crimes by Israel there. These are positive developments, he says, but this is only the beginning of a long-overdue process. Europe’s objections to Israel’s annexation push are sincere, but they have no real leverage to exercise over Tel Aviv, or none they’d choose to use in the face of certain retaliation by the US. China Dickerson, national political director for Forward Majority, dropped by to discuss Joe Biden and whether his continued support by high-profile Democrats contradicts the party’s full-throated support for the MeToo movement. How long will Biden command the loyalty of the party with these charges in the air, whether or not they’re true? The three grapple with the limits of morality when it comes to winning the dirty game of politics and the role of the Democratic Party in the future.

The president has been giving irresponsible medical advice for weeks now. Why are his qualified surrogates backing him up?Yasmina Mrabet, co-founder of community organization LinkUp and a member of the Party for Socialism and Liberation, told the Misfits it’s no surprise corporations are taking advantage of the hardship now faced by the nation’s workers. As people who are struggling begin to wonder why the hardest hit are paying the most and getting the least out of these recovery efforts, it’s important to keep this awakening and this momentum from being co-opted by cynical political parties. She discussed the ways capitalist forces will use the crisis to their own ends, be it employers or major housing developers, and broke down the difficulties of organizing against massive corporations. There are some fruitful directions for people to resist, however, including #CanceltheRent car caravans planned for Saturday in Washington, DC, New York City and nationwide.Kaitlin Sopoci-Belknap, national coordinator with Movement for a People's Party, joined the conversation to update political misfits everywhere about the work underway to create a viable, powerful party that actually represents the people. The Democrats have undercut the left for too long, and that machine is clearly not reformable from the inside. The Movement for a People’s Party is intended to remedy that. It’s time for a leader who is willing to tell the truth, not talk out of both sides of their mouth, as those operating under the umbrella of the DNC have to do. Dr. Marvin Weinbaum, director of Afghanistan and Pakistan studies at the Middle East Institute, joined Misfits Bob Schlehuber and Jamarl Thomas to talk about the peace agreement that is supposedly still in force in Afghanistan, even as conflict continues there. He explains what was wrong with the agreement from the start, how the hurdle of prisoner releases is going, and how the Afghan government ended up left out of some major negotiations. He also discussed the possibility that Afghanistan’s security forces will simply collapse, the fear of a return to Taliban control, and how Afghanistan’s population is dealing with generations of trauma. Sara Dady, immigration attorney at Dady Law Group, dropped by to rip into President Donald Trump’s vague new immigration freeze and the administration’s obvious lack of understanding of how immigration processes work in this country. This is clearly just a political device. The exemptions to the freeze make it obvious that this order will have no public health impact, and is merely a dishonest way to make an invisible enemy visible, by embodying it in the form of immigrants.David Swanson, activist, journalist, radio host and author of the book "Curing Exceptionalism," told the Misfits that a Joe Biden foreign policy would be far more cruel and bloodthirsty than the homespun, compassionate image he portrays. He’s to the right of former Bush administration officials on key foreign policy positions, but you won’t hear him grilled on those stances in mainstream US media. Refusing to vote for the lesser of two monsters isn’t an emotional outburst but a strategic choice, he explained. He also advocated for Americans to recognize the damage being done under the cover of sanctions or humanitarian responses and other bipartisan sleight of hand. The boys also broke down some of the shocking new numbers on the spread of COVID-19, the corporate capture of both of the US’ major parties and how this pandemic is laying it bare, some agricultural tragedies, and other news.

19 June 2017 - This was one of those shows where Will and I covered a lot of ground. We did not have an interview (and there is no Extra Mad) so we just moved straight through the show with no breaks. I began with a nod acknowledging Will for bringing on Math Campbell last week and taking time from the discussion of the UK snap election results to talk with Math about the fact that the new agreement between the May government and the DUP has destabilized the already precarious Good Friday Agreement. This week Gerry Adams and the group of the Sinn Fein leadership met with PM May and made their grievances known and clear. Interestingly, Adams also pressed May on the fact that her austerity economics has drained more than £1bn out of the Northern Irish economy, an economy already dramatically endangered by the coming closure of the border between the Republic of Ireland and the Counties. I also took a moment to note that MP Jo Cox was assassinated one year ago this week and the memorial event her family planned, The Great Get Together (#Jo Cox, #GreatGetTogether, #MoreInCommon) spread deep and wide across the country as people joined to acknowledge their desire for less divisiveness and more unity. More than 100,000 listed events took place and millions of people participated in everything from fair-like activities held in parks to tea parties held at libraries, churches, mosques and synagogues and even in simple things like baking cupcakes for neighbors. In this week when members of Congress and their staff were terrorized in Alexandria, it seemed appropriate to take a look at what trying to heal could look like if we wanted it to. In our Hopping Mad's Lying Liar Lie of the Week segment Will's contender was the inability of the Trump administration to have any actual idea if Trump went to see Rep. Steve Scalise. I nominated Trump's "witch hunt" tweets and included my favorite response tweets. As it turns out, Congressman Seth Moulton (D-MA) made the best case. He, of course, represents Salem, MA. 'nuff said. In the body of the show I use the example of the central bank of Denmark warning its member banks about concerns related to the hot lending market despite the fact that all of those banks have passed ECB compatible stress testing. Meanwhile back in the US, the House voted to roll-back Dodd-Frank and the Trump administration is tamping down regulatory enforcement at every opportunity. This leaves only the Fed between us and the same economic disaster which nearly destroyed the economy in 2007. So - every time you hear the deeply misguided "audit the Fed" meme, I want you to remember this week and thank the Great Bunny that the US Federal Reserve is (relatively) independent and self-funded. Will then spoke about the violent, so-called "left" DemExit movement and enumerated the ways in which they not really part of the left and definitely not part of the Democratic Party. Their dangerous, nihilistic rhetoric is really not about politics it's just a self-justification for their rage. They are not interested in engaging in the public debate about policy. Truly, their only focus is on revolution in the streets and destruction. Just as progressives blame the GOP for not having called-out the violent, far right; progressives must now take responsibility and call out the terrorists on the farthest fringes of the left for both their views and actions. I followed-on the subject of the responsibility to speak out by talking about former Fed Chair Ben Bernanke's new book, Courage to Act. NOW Bernanke acknowledges the the economic crazy is all coming from one side, the GOP, and even goes so far as to blame the Obama administration for not having issued more progressive budgets and then fought for them. Ben, where were you then!?! This show will air on 19 June and so I thought it was appropriate to take time to talk about the history of Juneteenth and why it is a relevant and important holiday for all Americans. I have
