GUEST OVERVIEW: Nick Brana is the National Director with the Movement for a People's Party, the national nonprofit at the helm of the rapidly growing movement for a new progressive political party in America. With nearly sixty thousand members and interviews in more than a hundred mainstream and independent media outlets, the Movement for a People's Party is building a coalition of labor and progressive organizations for a nationally-viable party for working people. Formerly Draft Bernie, MPP was founded in 2017 by Bernie 2016 staff, delegates and supervolunteers. Nick Brana, Founder and National Coordinator of the Movement for a People's Party, joins T. J. O'Hara, host of Deconstructed, to discuss the organization's evolving platform and the progress it is making. The movement seeks to create a major new progressive populist political party in the United States. Mr. Brana talks about the genesis of the movement and its ties to frustrations that began to arise during Senator Bernie Sanders' 2016 presidential campaign; a campaign for which he served as its National Political Outreach Coordinator. He describes the imbalance that continues to exist between Party-favored candidates versus more revolutionary candidates like Senator Sanders. Mr. Brana also discusses the potential new Party's commitment to driving “big money” out of politics and representing the will of the people. He talks about populist polling that reflects a strong preference in favor of providing a living wage, universal healthcare, free education (pre-school through college), and access to housing for all as well as an emphasis on addressing the issue of Climate Change. He acknowledges the incredible waste of taxpayer funds that currently exists (at the hands of both major Parties) and how a recovery of those funds, along with increased corporate and private taxes and the elimination of loopholes, can fund the movement's progressive agenda. T. J. asks probing questions about how the potential new Party will differentiate itself from other Third Parties and Mr. Brana responds. T. J. also asks about whether the People's Party has the ability to scale to a point of becoming a competitive alternative in the near-term as well as whether the Party may threaten to fracture the base of the Democratic Party. Mr. Brana offers his opinion on both counts. Will the People's Party become a viable alternative to the current duopoly? Can it attract a large enough percentage of independent voters to supplement its base, which has roots in a subset of the Democratic Party? This past weekend, new members of Congress voted for the speaker of the House. Given the slim majority of Democrats, progressives urged members of Congress who ran on a platform of Medicare for All to negotiate a floor vote for the Medicare for All bill in exchange for their support for Nancy Pelosi. Given the recession, pandemic, the millions who have lost their health insurance, growing support for Medicare for All and this rare opportunity of holding political power, the floor vote was seen as an important demonstration that progressives in Congress would fight for the people's interests this year. A Movement For A Viable Third Party, A People's Party- Nick Brana

Welcome to the radio magazine that brings you news, commentary and analysis from a Black Left perspective. I’m Margaret Kimberley, along with my co-host Glen Ford.  Coming up: the Green Party gears up to take on the two corporate parties in November. And, the Movement for a Peoples Party plans to be on the presidential ballot in 2024, but its members are in the streets, today.   But first – by some measures, the current movement against police brutality is the largest political movement ever seen in the United States. But Clarence Taylor, a professor emeritus of history at Baruch College, in New York City, reminds us that brutal, repressive cops have been part of Americana for most of the nation’s history. Professor Taylor has written a book, titled, “Fight the Power: African Americans and the Long History of Police Brutality in New York City.” When the corporate Democrats defeated Bernie Sanders’ first race for president, in 2016, a number of Sanders’ supporters left the Deocratic Party entirely, and formed the Movement for a People’s Party. Nick Brana is National coordinator for the M.P.P. Now Bernie Sanders has been forced out of the presidential race once again. We asked Nick Brana if Sander’s second defeat has resulted in a boost in recruitment for the People’s Party movement. The Green Party held its national convention this weekend, and nominated party co-founder Howie Hawkins as their presidential candidate. Angela Walker, a Black activist from Milwaukee, is Hawkins’ vice presidential running mate.    Black Agenda Report’s Margaret Kimberley is a Green Party activist, and BAR editor and columnist Ajamu Baraka was the Green’s vice presidential candidate in 2016. I'm Margaret Kimberley, along with my co-host Glen Ford.  Coming up: the Green Party gears up to take on the two corporate parties in November. And, the Movement for a Peoples Party plans to be on the presidential ballot in 2024, but its members are in the streets, today.   But first – by some measures, the current movement against police brutality is the largest political movement ever seen in the United States. But Clarence Taylor, a professor emeritus of history at Baruch College, in New York City, reminds us that brutal, repressive cops have been part of Americana for most of the nation's history. Professor Taylor has written a book, titled, “Fight the Power: African Americans and the Long History of Police Brutality in New York City.” When the corporate Democrats defeated Bernie Sanders' first race for president, in 2016, a number of Sanders' supporters left the Deocratic Party entirely, and formed the Movement for a People's Party. Nick Brana is National coordinator for the M.P.P. Now Bernie Sanders has been forced out of the presidential race once again. We asked Nick Brana if Sander's second defeat has resulted in a boost in recruitment for the People's Party movement. The Green Party held its national convention this weekend, and nominated party co-founder Howie Hawkins as their presidential candidate. Angela Walker, a Black activist from Milwaukee, is Hawkins' vice presidential running mate.    Black Agenda Report's Margaret Kimberley is a Green Party activist, and BAR editor and columnist Ajamu Baraka was the Green's vice presidential candidate in 2016. IVN Election Reform Editor Shawn Griffiths recently spoke with Nick Brana, who is the former National Outreach Coordinator for the 2016 Bernie Sanders presidential campaign, and is the founder of the Movement for a People's Party. Shawn and Nick discuss a new rule proposed by the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee that would essentially require presidential candidates to declare their unconditional loyalty to the party establishment. The rule blocks out independent-minded Democrats and candidates like Bernie Sanders who do not toe the party line 100% of the time. You thought superdelegates were bad? Imagine a rule that allows one man to decide who can and cannot be a candidate. Under this rule, Tom Perez is given that power. So if you don't fall in line with the establishment, you can't run. Nick and Shawn also discuss Bernie Sanders' silence on the party's actions against him and millions of voters, and the incentive that gave the party to continue down the path it followed in the 2016 elections -- rigging the primaries, limiting debates, giving one campaign full control of the party, etc. You won't want to miss this interview.
