Can relentless advocacy truly shape the future of marijuana legislation? Join us on the Drug Report podcast as we explore the recent triumph in New Hampshire, where the unwavering efforts of advocates have led Governor Kelly Ayotte to promise a veto on any future marijuana legalization attempts. This victory shines a light on the power of persistence in the ever-evolving landscape of drug policy. As we navigate through these pivotal changes, we're also dissecting the challenges faced by the marijuana industry in New York, revealing how initial promises of social equity have not been fulfilled, leaving many equity applicants in financial distress. Kevin Sabet's op-ed adds a critical perspective to our discussion, emphasizing the widening gap between wealthy investors and disenfranchised communities. Our conversation takes a crucial turn as we tackle issues surrounding medical marijuana prescriptions, drawing comparisons to the opioid crisis of the 1990s. How can we ensure patient safety when a small group of doctors dominates the recommendation landscape? We're also looking at the ongoing efforts in Florida to legalize marijuana and the strategic legislative initiatives being considered by the new Congress. Randy's resolution serves as a cornerstone in raising awareness about the risks of high-potency THC, reflecting a broader strategic approach to drug policy reform and patient protection.Federal marijuana legalization remains a hot topic, with the complexities of state and federal enforcement at the forefront. We address the urgent need for Congress to empower the DOJ in regulating marijuana sales near schools, while also examining the emerging debate around Delta 8, especially as companies like DoorDash enter the market. The unexpected halt in the marijuana rescheduling process due to an industry-filed motion has opened the door for broader scrutiny and discussion. President Trump's ambiguous remarks about the Safe Banking Act add another layer of uncertainty, as we acknowledge the collaborative efforts of advocates striving to navigate these challenging waters. Health is unlikely to be a top priority for the new GOP-led 119th Congress and President-elect Donald Trump. But it's likely to play a key supporting role, with an abortion bill already scheduled for debate in the Senate. Meanwhile, it's unclear when and how the new Congress will deal with the bipartisan bills jettisoned from the previous Congress' year-end omnibus measure — including a major deal to rein in the power of pharmacy benefit managers. Praying for the New Congress! Praying for America - Jan. 2, 2025 by Priests for Life
Jan. 3 marks the beginning of the next Congress, where Republicans will lead both chambers and control the White House. Democrats being out of power has big implications for tax policy, as GOP lawmakers heading into the new year debate what to renew from the 2017 GOP tax law, known as the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. The TCJA was passed with no votes from Democrats and benefits skewed toward the wealthy and corporations. Incoming GOP leaders have proposed breaking their top priorities into two bills and moving them through Congress using the reconciliation process. The first would jump-start President-elect Donald Trump's priorities on immigration and gas drilling, and the second would include tax and other legislative priorities. Republicans say moving tax legislation to later in the year would give them more time to decide what to do about many of the law's individual provisions that expire at the end of 2025. They also will have to decide what Trump campaign promises to include. On this episode of Talking Tax, Bloomberg Tax reporters Chris Cioffi, Zach Cohen, and Lauren Vella discuss what to expect in the 2025 tax fight, and the policy issues that likely will define the debate.
