Turkey's new opposition party offers hope, but its future is already in jeopardy

International report

The launch of the Yeni Party in Turkey promises to energise the country's struggling opposition. But while some polls show it leading, it remains vulnerable – already beset by arrests it says are "politically motivated".  In a glitzy video, set to pumping music and shared widely across social media, Ozgur Ozel launched the Yeni Party – "New Party" – vowing to usher in a new era in Turkish politics and end President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's long rule. Ozel founded the New Party after a court removed him from leading the main opposition party, the Republican People's Party (CHP). His rival, former party leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu, 77, who lost every election during his decade in charge of the CHP, replaced him. Many in the country believe Erdogan played a role in the removal of Ozel, as his popularity grew thanks to tireless campaigning. Riding the wave The New Party is settings its sights beyond the CHP's usual supporters. "It covers the whole political spectrum in Turkish political life," explains Ozel's advisor Ilham Uzel. "There are critical elements like democratisation, rule of law, secularism and a pro-Western approach, so we maintain these main pillars. But it is not confined to social democracy; we reach out to every section of Turkish society, including Islamists and conservatives, nationalists and liberals. We have Kurdish supporters." The New Party is riding a wave of excitement. Ninety-one out of 135 CHP parliamentary deputies have defected to its ranks, joined by dozens of mayors and it is swiftly becoming the main opposition in parliament. Turkey opposition worries that Europe is sacrificing democracy for security Some polls show the party soaring above 30 percent, leaving Erdogan's Justice and Development Party behind, while the CHP's support has collapsed. The New Party's broad approach is finding fertile ground. "Even those who still support the governing coalition, the AK Party and MHP, are unhappy with how things are or how politics is practised, especially regarding economic issues. So there is a push towards change," says political commentator Sezin Oney. "There is a yearning to change things at the grassroots, and the New Party may be the only party that can represent a new way of doing politics. But they have to live up to it, of course." Corruption charges Erdogan has remained in power for more than 20 years partly by exploiting divisions within the opposition, which is made up of conservatives, hardline secularists, and both Kurdish and Turkish nationalists.  The New Party has a key advantage over the strongly secular CHP, whose history is linked to past policies targeting Turkey's large Kurdish minority and religious conservatives. "CHP is identified with many bad experiences that the Kurds and conservative people had in past decades," said Mesut Yegen of the Diyarbakir-based Kurdish Studies Center. "If you look at what Ozgur Ozel says during his speeches, you may clearly see the Yeni Party doesn't have the baggage of CHP." Erdogan has also often exploited the CHP's history, painting it as anti-religious and hostile to Kurdish minority rights. The New Party faces the tricky task of keeping CHP loyalists on board while reaching new supporters. But for now, simply staying out of jail may be the most pressing concern for its representatives.  Turkey marks a decade since the coup that never was, but never really ended Several mayors who joined the New Party have been arrested on corruption charges, widely seen as politically motivated. In the past two years, 26 opposition mayors and hundreds of officials have been imprisoned on corruption allegations, compared to two mayors from Erdogan's AK Party. "They are cracking down on our party – every other day, mayors are arrested," says Uzgel. "They filed another charge against our leader. Nobody is safe in this authoritarian regime. So Mr Ozel is on the spot, definitely." Ozel is protected by parliamentary immunity, but Oney warns he may be running out of time. "Ozgur Ozel might be imprisoned himself once his immunity is removed by a parliamentary vote, that's a possibility. The only immunity he can have is the immunity bestowed upon him by the people. So only public opinion is protecting him. How much can it protect him? We'll see." With parliament about to break for summer until October, Ozel has a brief window to strengthen his party and rally public support.

Abdul El-Sayed's victory in Michigan's Democratic Senate primary is being hailed as a major breakthrough for the party's progressive wing after he defeated a heavily funded opponent backed by pro-Israel groups, including AIPAC. The upset is expected to fuel an already fierce debate over the future direction of the Democratic Party ahead of the US midterm elections. As progressives celebrate the result, Republicans are casting the race as a warning about the growing influence of socialism and the far left, arguing that candidates like El-Sayed represent a dramatic shift in Democratic politics. With Republicans facing mounting criticism over the economic impact of an increasingly unpopular Iran War, questions are growing over whether those attacks will resonate with voters - or whether President Trump risks being undone by the same anti-establishment politics that helped propel him to power. Piers Morgan is joined by Republican Senator Rand Paul, OutKick founder Clay Travis, conservative commentator Carrie Prejean Boller, Democratic strategist and Endless Urgency host Mike Nellis, Palestinian-American commentator Omar Baddar, and independent journalist and conservative YouTuber Nick Shirley to discuss where American politics is heading. In this of Sauna Talk, Glenn Auerbach is joined bench-side by Josh Leddy of Get Sweaty with Leddy and sauna builder Leif Kjorness of Excelsior Saunas for a deeply personal and wide-ranging conversation recorded after multiple sauna and cold plunge rounds on Lake Ann in Minnesota.  What unfolds is more than a discussion about sauna. It's a conversation about craftsmanship, friendship, healing, community, and the ways sauna culture continues to evolve while still holding onto its roots. Josh shares how his lifelong connection to sauna eventually inspired him to launch Get Sweaty with Leddy, a YouTube channel and podcast focused on natural healing, pain management, and meaningful conversations that happen best on the sauna bench. He talks about his upcoming mobile sauna project, his vision for creating immersive wellness gatherings through movement and music, and why sauna creates a unique environment where people can truly connect without barriers. Leif reflects on his journey from custom home building into the sauna world, and how building saunas became more than construction work — it became a calling. He discusses craftsmanship, quality building principles, the importance of slowing life down, and the fulfillment that comes from creating spaces where people gather, reflect, and reconnect with themselves and each other. The conversation also dives into the details behind the "party sauna" concept, including large panoramic windows, skylights, thoughtful ventilation, and building mobile saunas designed to foster memorable shared experiences. Throughout the episode, Glenn shares stories from the early days of SaunaTimes, the origins of Sauna Days on the North Shore of Lake Superior, and his own formative sauna experiences hitchhiking through Finland and Sweden as a young traveler. Together, the three discuss the rise of mobile sauna culture in Minnesota, the power of hot-cold contrast therapy, the difference between manufactured cold plunges and natural bodies of water, and the emotional reset that happens when people gather around heat, steam, cold water, and conversation. There are moments of humor, reflection, and philosophy woven throughout — from stories about cutting fresh ice holes by hand to discussions about social media fatigue, authentic community building, and the importance of finding your own operating system for life. Glenn closes by sharing the personal framework that grounds him today: Freedom, Enoughness, Nature, and Simplicity. This episode captures what sauna culture is really about at its best: generosity, vulnerability, camaraderie, and the simple but profound experience of being fully present together. Topics discussed include: Mobile sauna culture Sauna building and craftsmanship Sauna Days and grassroots sauna community Cold plunging and winter swimming Natural healing and pain management Lake Superior sauna culture Music, movement, and sauna gatherings The mental and physical benefits of contrast therapy Friendship, reflection, and slowing down The future of sauna culture in America Guests: Josh Leddy — Get Sweaty with Leddy Leaf Kjorness — Excelsior Saunas

And there's a strategy already in place that could turn that frustration into a brand-new political movement — almost overnight, using existing institutions of the Freedom Caucus activism and brand along with the state Republican Party convention system. We don't need a constitutional amendment to fix this; we just need to change the rules of the game. By moving away from monied, special-interest primaries and flooding state party conventions, the Freedom Caucus and grassroots patriots can de facto create a new party from the inside out. If conservatives remain trapped in the Trump-Vance GOP, they will continue to suffer all the liabilities of Big Tech venture socialism with all the political liabilities that will turn more voters into Democrats. We need a new party built upon natural living and natural markets to move away from the fake, asset-bubble economy championed by both parties, including Trump. Today, I vividly diagnose exactly how the government uses federal pensions, artificially low interest rates, public and private debt, and numerous regulatory policies to destroy the middle class and small business. The economy is analogous to an AI hallucination bubble that is like a self-licking ice-cream cone and continues to create monopolies. A new party, untethered from the GOP's past, could crush the Democrats using this message and vision.    Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Former CNN and Fox anchor Dave Briggs applauds Elon Musk for trying to launch a brand new political party and would eagerly jump on board to join him in the effort if asked. I think Elon Musk is an utterly horrible human being, this new party is just a vanity project for him, and I wouldn't want a thing to do with it. So Dave and I did what two people who disagree should do. We sat down and had a conversation. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Today's Headlines: President Trump signed his sweeping budget bill into law. The law eliminates taxes on silencers and some firearms, adds new taxes on remittances, and includes bizarre provisions like $40 million for a MAGA statue garden and Trump-branded savings accounts for babies. It extends Trump's 2017 tax cuts, slashes Medicaid (projected to leave 12 million uninsured), defunds Planned Parenthood reimbursements, and guts food assistance while ballooning ICE's budget to over $100 billion. Elon Musk, furious over the bill's impact on his business, announced a vague new “America Party” as his teen protégé “Big Balls” was hired by the Social Security Administration. Meanwhile, 79 people died in sudden Texas floods, FEMA grant programs are quietly being withdrawn, and Kristi Noem is under scrutiny for accepting undisclosed payments from a nonprofit promoting her political ambitions. On the global stage, Trump's trade war deadline looms with only 3 of 90 deals finalized, and up to 70% tariffs threatened for non-compliant countries. Proximity talks between Israel and Hamas resume this week in Qatar, as Netanyahu visits the White House following Israel's rejection of Hamas's latest ceasefire demands. Frustrated with Trump over the so called "Big Beautiful Bill" raising America's debt, Elon Musk says he is starting his own political party called the "America Party." He says it will bring true freedom to Americans. Trump's response?  He's calling Musk a train wreck who has gone off the rails. Trump took to social media to write, "The one thing Third Parties are good for is the creation of Complete and Total DISRUPTION & CHAOS, and we have enough of that with the Radical Left Democrats, who have lost their confidence and their minds!”  Over the holiday weekend in Texas, a horrible loss of life - with more than 80 people dead in flash flooding, many of them children attending summer camps along a river.  The New York Times says cuts made by the Trump administration left National Weather Service Positions vacant which may have impacted flooding coordination efforts. We welcome iHeart TV and Radio political analyst Gary Dietrich to the show to discuss.  We'll continue talking politics with attorney and political consultant John Aravosis.  He's the founder and executive editor of AMERICAblog and The Aravosis Report. Then, it's a Word About Animals with Karen Dawn of Dawn Watch. The Mark Thompson Show 7/7/25Patreon subscribers are the backbone of the show!
