Calling all questionable mushroom-based life-forms. This week on Shoot the Hostage, Dan and Sarah are hitting the reset button on reality and plummeting into the bonkers world of the Super Mario Bros. (1993). As we reach the final level of our "Flops" season, we're asking the essential questions about this infamous film adapted from a computer game: Was it doomed from the start? How did this become one of the most notorious flops of all time?... And why is Fisher Stevens in white-face? Join us as we traverse Dinohattan's fungal landscapes and try to make sense of the troubled pipe-line of production that saw directors Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton (yes, the creators of Max Headroom) reportedly clashing with the studio. We dive headfirst into the legends surrounding the set: Bob Hoskins's well-documented hatred for the film and Dennis Hopper's baffling T-Rex inspired mannerisms and alleged Trump-like ego. Despite being a massive box office failure, we debate if there's merit in its sheer ambition and bizarre ideas, like de-evolution or people turning into fungus. Is it a total s*** sandwich, or does it hold up as a weirdly compelling slice of bizarre 90s cinema? If you're nostalgic for the days when video-game movies were finding their feet (or just tripping over them), or just curious about movies that make you feel nostalgic for poor life choices, this episode is your Power Up! Expect discussion on: Comparing this flop to other season entries like Tank Girl and Battlefield Earth. The bizarre notion of dimensional rifts caused by sound waves. The lasting impact this film had on Nintendo's handling of their IP. Why the song "Walk the Dinosaur" makes absolutely no sense. Luigi's surprisingly sweet rainbow belt. That's it for season 10! Stay tuned until the end to find out the plan for season 11, which begins June 23rd. Would you like to see the full lineup for season 11? The only place you can see it is on Patreon but you don't need to be a paying member. Sign up for a free membership and get access to the lineup. The original bad video game movie, Super Mario Bros. (1993) follows Mario and Luigi as they seek to rescue Daisy from President Koopa in Dinohattan.Unfaithful to most Mario lore, this film is based off the premise that a meteor shattered the universe into two dimensions: the dinosaur (lizard) dimension and the mammal dimension. It's complicated...Anyways, no Princess Toadstool/Peach, no squishy Goombas, no jumping, no real Koopa, and no power-ups. But there is an animatronic Yoshi!
Although this film hasn't held up that well over the years, we will give it points for trying to think outside the box with the source material. The 1993 movie "Super Mario Bros." is a live-action adaptation of the popular video game franchise. The film follows Mario Mario (played by Bob Hoskins) and Luigi Mario (played by John Leguizamo), two Brooklyn plumbers who find themselves in a parallel dimension known as Dinohattan. In this alternate world, King Koopa (played by Dennis Hopper) rules with an iron fist. The brothers join forces with Princess Daisy (played by Samantha Mathis) to stop Koopa's evil plans and rescue the missing Daisy's father. The movie takes creative liberties with the source material, incorporating elements of science fiction and dystopian urban landscapes. Despite its departure from the video game's whimsical and colorful tone, "Super Mario Bros." has gained a cult following over the years, appreciated by some for its unique and eccentric take on the Mushroom Kingdom.Check out the merch: http://shop.backinthedaypodcast.comFriends of the Show1 Man Mafia (twitch.tv/1man_mafia)Jayke The Gamer God (twitch.tv/JaykeTheGamerGod)IB Best Gaming (https://www.tiktok.com/@ibbestgaming)Intro for the shopSupport the show'Beavis and Butt-head' Cover art created by Joe Crawford

Grab your mushrooms and trust the fungus, dear listener, because like the accident-prone vehicles of Dinohattan, we're screeching and flipping our way into the Super Mario Bros. movie from 1993! A flawed diamond is still a diamond, so despite its many faults and the tumultuous production, we love this weird adaptation of the famous video game series. Joey swoons over Princess Daisy, Ron is in love with Bob-omb's shoes, and (like Mario falling through an interdimensional portal) Paul is head over heels for Yoshi's cuteness. We chat about the stellar cast and the earnestness with which many of them deliver their performances, the hit-or-miss visuals, the extended cut deleted scenes, Bertha, hair, music, behind-the-scenes shenanigans, and so much more. Check it out and let us know your thoughts on the movie (you can check out the extended cut for free here: https://archive.org/details/super-mario-bros-1993-the-morton-jankel-cut-extended-vhs). The first Cult Cinema Showdown of 2022 features two films based on video games that TRIED to be different than their source materials. What we ended up with were Super Mario Bros. and Future Cops. While Super Mario Bros. was the first ever video game movie adaptation set in a dystopian Manhattan-based "Dinohattan", Future Cops pulled characters directly from Street Fighter into a chaotic dystopian 2043 Hong Kong with time travel elements akin to The Terminator. Super Mario Bros. features the emergence of an alternate dimension caused by (what is now known as) Brooklyn being struck by a meteorite millions of years ago. In this alternate dimension, humans evolved from lizards, rather than monkeys, as believed in our own realm. There is also only one city, Dinohattan, surrounded by endless desert, and currently presided over by the evil Koopa (Hopper, Red Rock West). President Koopa (Dennis Hopper) is out to get a powerful rock crystal, a fragment of the original meteorite, that he needs to merge the two dimensions, giving him more realms to conquer. Here is where we meet our heroes, a couple of plumbers named Mario Mario (Bob Hoskins) and Luigi Mario (John Leguizamo), who, in pursuit of a kidnapped new friend in a paleontology student named Daisy (Samantha Mathis), who happens to have the rock in the form of a necklace, find a portal into the Dinohattan dimension. Dangers lurk all around, as the brave brothers must battle the mighty Koopa and his lizard horde to rescue Daisy and thwart Koopa's evil plans to destroy their world.
Special guest Ethan Mace joins Adam and Kiaran taking on the very first live action film based on a video game: Super Mario Bros (1993). Little reminder about this often-maligned gem from the 90s, it takes place in DINOhattan, the perfect backdrop for our last episode in Julyssic Park. Find out how we rank this film compared to Jurassic Park, Carnosaur, and Tammy & The T-Rex. Super Mario Bros was directed by husband and wife duo, Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel. We talk about their interesting methods and what stars Bob Hoskins (Hook, Who Framed Roger Rabbit), John Leguizamo (Spawn, Land of the Dead), and Dennis Hopper (True Romance, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2) had to say about them... spoiler alert, it wasn't good. Did you remember that Fisher Stevens (Short Circuit 1 & 2) is in this? He and Richard Edson (Platoon, Howard the Duck) have tremendous chemistry. Listen close to find Jake's spinoff pitch for these two. The film also features Mojo Nixon as Toad. Did you know that he got Winona Rider to be in his music video for "Debbie Gibson Is Pregnant with My Two-Headed Love Child"? Finally, we have to talk about Fiona Shaw as Lena, who gives off MAJOR Elizabeth Bathory vibes... Did you ever wonder what Super Mario creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, thought of the film? Well, we'll tell ya! Along with tons of video game trivia like how Pauline is Mario/ Jumpman's first girlfriend from Donkey Kong! Vous l'aurez deviné, on jase de Back to the Future!
Before ‘Tomb Raider', before ‘Mortal Kombat', before ‘Street Fighter', there was something even WORSE. ‘Super Mario Bros' - which opened in the United States on 28th May, 1993 - was such a critical and commercial failure that for years afterwards Nintendo kept their franchises out of Hollywood hands.Relocating the action to ‘Dinohattan', the film inexplicably disregarded most of what had made the videogame such a smash-hit and replaced these elements with allusions to Blade Runner and Tim Burton's Batman. In this episode, Arion, Olly and Rebecca reveal Bob Hoskins' drinking and accident-prone habits on-set, consider the relative strength of today's spinoffs such as The Lego Movie, and analyse the secret sauce that keeps the Mario brand strong in the face of such adversity… Further Reading:• CinemaSins presents: ‘Everything Wrong with Super Mario Bros in 21 Minutes or Less': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYQHnPOYc5Q• ‘The Stench of it Stays With Everybody', The Guardian (2018): https://www.theguardian.com/games/2018/mar/22/super-mario-bros-movie-killing-fields-chariots-fire-video-game• ‘Plumbing a Videogame To Its Depths' - the New York Times reviews the film in 1993: https://www.nytimes.com/1993/05/29/movies/review-film-plumbing-a-video-game-to-its-depths.htmlFor bonus material and to support the show, visit Patreon.com/RetrospectorsWe'll be back on Monday! After sending thirty fan letters over the span of a week, Austin finally receives a signed copy of "Super Mario Bros." (1993) from John Leguizamo. He invites Clint "over" for a virtual watch party. However, as the credits roll and the conversation begins, it becomes immediately clear that someone did something to the copy of the film Austin received - that perhaps the film caused a "de-evolution" in the High on Hollywood Brothers (TM). By the end of the credits, our curious hosts seem only to remember but one phrase, repeated over and over in their heads on an incessant loop: TRUST THE FUNGUS.
Super Mario Bros. is a travesty. It reimagines the colorful sprites of the Mushroom Kingdom as a grimy, dystopian nightmare world. It's an interpretation where Bowser has more on his mind than simple kidnapping. In this cyberpunk acid trip, President Koopa—played by Dennis Hopper as just a guy in a suit—has graduated to despot. He's a fascist dictator on a quest to ethnically cleanse the people of Earth. This all may sound like an exaggeration, but it isn't. Super Mario Bros. is oppressively grim, rarely funny, and oddly horny for what is meant to be a kids' movie. Worst of all, it lacks almost any of the hallmarks of the storied franchise. Sure, there are visual cues here and there; but it squanders the license in unimaginable ways. The familiar music is nearly nonexistent; the Goombas are ten-foot tall hell spawn with shrunken heads; and the Shy Guys are leather-clad freaks ripped straight from Mad Max. It's a truly mind boggling exercise in Hollywood failing to understand what makes a property so beloved. They paid millions just for the rights to develop the film, and they bought it on the title alone; there wasn't even a script. So it's sort of hard to fathom how they came to this cringe-worthy amalgamation of ideas. Audiences, critics, and the stars agreed. This film was lambasted. And despite being based on one of the most lucrative video games in existence, it failed to even recoup its budget. It grossed just $35 million on a budget of $48 million. As for the stars, Hopper was apparently miserable on set, berating the directors for the constant rewrites and dearth of clear direction. Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo—who played the titular brothers—resorted to drinking to soldier through the madness. We all feel your pain. But, sometimes, you have to see things to believe that they inexplicably exist. So sit back, wrench open a Pixels IPA from Seminar Brewing, and reload those Thwomp Stompers! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Cash, and Chumpzilla are heading to Dinohattan to de-evolve President Koopa and then dance the night away with reptilian strippers! EP79 | Super Mario Brothers Sequel | SequelQuest Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros is the most iconic video game franchise in history, so of course a Super Mario Bros live action film starring Mario and Luigi made sense to movie studios in 1993. Unfortunately the grimy wasteland inhabited by Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo and Dennis Hopper on the silver screen bore very little resemblance to the colorful fantasy world we saw on our television sets at home. The film has lived in infamy for 25 years as many more video game movies have come and gone, but no further live action forays into the world of the Super Mario Bros have ever been discussed…until now. Join Adam, Jeramy and returning guest, Colin as they share their stories of gaming with Mario in the 80’s and 90’s, their first time seeing Super Mario Bros in movie theaters and ultimately begin pitching their wild ideas for a Super Mario Bros movie sequel. Will the gritty cinematic vision of Dinohattan return along with some amped up violence in the mushroom kingdom? Or will the crew work to bring the film back in line with the imagination of gamers everywhere to create a worthy quest for these video game heroes? Listen now and find out how Super Mario Bros 2 takes shape in the world of imagination known as SequelQuest.
