Paul Gilmartin, host of the “Mental Illness Happy Hour” podcast, and Gabe discuss Paul's struggles with anxiety, financial pressures, and porn addiction. They emphasize the importance of support networks, self-compassion, and finding healthy coping mechanisms. Paul shares how he moved past pornography addiction toward more fulfilling hobbies and relationships. A vulnerable and eye-opening story—listen now! “You'll never find out what your body feels like without being shocked by the intensity of pornography if you don't take a break from it. I think it's definitely worth some investigating because I also find I have way more sexual energy and desire to bring to my relationship. Because I'm not dissipating it. And it feels great. In many ways, it feels like self-actualization.” ~Paul Gilmartin To learn more -- or read the transcript -- please visit the official page. Paul Gilmartin is a comedian, show host and mental health advocate. He hosts the podcast the Mental Illness Happy Hour which is one of my favorites and has helped a ton of people. Myself included. I guested on Paul's show and talked about my struggles with anger, it's still one of the only platforms where I've opened up about that part of my life. Trigger warning: This episode goes deep. Paul discusses his past trauma and life struggles that have lead to him to where he is today. Last but not least and how I first met him, Paul has a faux-right-wing satirical character called Richard Martin, which pre-dates Stephen Colbert's character from the Colbert Report. Also, Nicole gets her question answered.

It was 2003 and Paul Gilmartin, one time host of TV's Dinner and a Movie, was presented with an ultimatum by his psychiatrist: either do something to address your alcohol and drug addiction or I can't really work with you anymore. Besides substance use issues, Paul had been dealing with intense suicidal ideation, major depressive disorder and the trauma of an alcoholic father and a mother engaged in covert incest. He was a mess. Finally, he reached out to support groups for his issues and broke down crying for the entire first meeting he attended. What followed was a journey to something better. Hear how he got sober, got treatment, and went on to help other people through openness and vulnerability. Hear also the rather rigorous steps Paul must follow every day to stay healthy.Thank you to all our listeners who support the show as monthly members of Maximum Fun.Check out our I'm Glad You're Here and Depresh Mode merchandise at the brand new merch website MaxFunStore.com!Hey, remember, you're part of Depresh Mode and we want to hear what you want to hear about. Comedian Paul Gilmartin is the host of the long running podcast The Mental Illness Happy Hour, where he interviews all kinds of people–from celebrities to friends from his own support groups–about issues related to mental health, addiction, and personal struggles of all varieties. Meghan (despite being 100 percent sane) was a guest on The Mental Illness Happy Hour back in 2011 and she and Paul catch up on what's transpired since then and how the podcast has evolved. Paul talks about what he's learned about mental health over the years, how he approaches his interviews, and how his own life circumstances have played a big part in his podcast. Famously upfront about his past and present struggles, Paul talks about his mother's sexual inappropriateness, his challenges with intimacy, and what it was like to be single again in his 50s after a divorce. He and Meghan also discuss the mental health effects of the pandemic and Paul (who supports masking) shares his theory that some young people will have internalized mask trauma that will develop into a sexual kink later in life. You heard it here first! If that's not personal enough, Paul sticks around for 30 minutes of bonus content and reflects on turning 60, staying afloat in the new creative economy, being in a new relationship after divorce, and getting better at intimacy while still enjoying his solitude, and how he felt at 11-years-old when a doctor told him he would never have children. (You read that right.) He asks Meghan some questions, too! To listen to this portion, support the podcast at meghandaum.substack.com and listen to premium episodes there. Guest Bio: Paul Gilmartin launched the Mental Illness Happy Hour podcast in 2011. Before that, he hosted TBS' Dinner and a Movie for 16 years. As a standup he has appeared on Comedy Central Presents: Paul Gilmartin and number other shows. He is a frequent guest on the Jimmy Dore Show, performing political satire as right-wing Congressman Richard Martin. Is Video Game Addiction Real? It's great to do things you enjoy. But can you go too far with a hobby? And at what point does it become an addiction? That's the question experts are trying to answer about playing video games. The World Health Organization added “gaming disorder” to the 2018 version of its medical reference book, International Classification of Diseases. But the American Psychiatry Association's manual, the DSM-5, didn't. Think Unbroken with Michael Unbroken | CPTSD, TRAUMA and Mental Health Healing Podcast
In this episode, I'm very excited to be back with you with another episode, and today's guest is Paul Gilmartin, the host of Mental Illness Happy Hour. If you've ever had thoughts about suicide, this is an episode that you want to listen to. If you've ever had thoughts about whether or not someone in your family has been incestuous, this is an episode that you're going to want to listen to. If you've ever had thoughts that you might be addicted to substances, drugs, sex, video games, this is an episode that you're going to want to listen to. This conversation is probably the most vulnerable conversation I've had with anyone on the show. It's really powerful and impactful to me not only because I look up to Paul as a mentor and what he does in the podcasting space but also because as I continue to go forward with Think Unbroken in my own personal journey, it's super important to me that I step further and deeper into vulnerability and that's a conversation that we're going to have today. There's going to be some trigger warnings, you know, normally I don't throw them out here, but I'm going to today, I think it's important, you might get triggered, so make sure you do your self-care, make sure you do, whatever you do take care of yourself. But there is so much value in this episode, so much just grace and compassion and empathy and vulnerability that I think, if you don't listen to this episode, you're going to really miss out, and this is one that I will personally be listening to again. So I'm very excited! Just take a moment and listen to this episode, my friends! -Where do we begin with getting real, honest, and real honest about our pasts? -What gets in the way of being honest about the roots of our codependency (and how does that keep us codependent)? -When, why, and how can we start to tell our truth, even if it involves others like our parents? In this episode, I have the honor and privilege to sit down with Paul Gilmartin, Host of Mental Illness Happy Hour podcast. Paul shares about his codependency and what that has looked like for him before and after he joined 12-step recovery programs. You'll also hear how Paul cultivated the courage to talk openly about his past, including his relationship with his mother, despite having a codependent relationship with her. How does a codependent tell their truth if and when it involves being hurt by those they are most codependent with? Tune in to hear Paul's journey to telling his truth. Thanks for listening! About Paul: -Paul Gilmartin is the Host of the Mental Illness Happy Hour podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/mental-illness-happy-hour/id427377900 -He has amazing surveys for listeners to fill out anonymously. They may help you tell your truth! Go here to check out different survey topics: https://mentalpod.com/ -Here's the episode where Paul interviewed me on codependency this past summer: https://podcasts.apple.com/no/podcast/543-codependency-marissa-esquibel/id427377900?i=1000525031453 Helpful links: www.codependummy.com/toolsforhealing www.codependummy.com/challenge www.codependummy.com Want to come on the show: email marissa@codependummy.com More deets on the episode: We start with hearing about Paul's definition of codependency and he shares about his codependent experiences. Paul talks about ways he was codependent with his mother and how, due to his father's alcoholism, he felt like he had to play the role as her emotional support. Paul discusses what codependency in his life looked like before and after he started attending 12-step meetings and support groups. He shares about the empathy, support, and encouragement he received in his meetings as well as from therapy which helped him share honestly about the antecedents to his mental health struggles. I then ask Paul about how he was able to share openly on his podcast about his past, particularly his relationship with his mother. Paul reveals how it was the culmination of therapy, support groups, finding supportive friends, having guests on talking about their pasts, reading listeners stories about what they had been through, and other factors related to his healing that led him to open up about his past. How did he start to talk so openly about his mom? As you hear, there is no easy formula. It's messy. “And it's not about demonizing people. I just have to share my truth.” You'll hear about my own realizations about what I have had to share thanks to all our guests and listeners talking about the connections between our childhood, family, and past trauma with the development of codependency in adulthood. We conclude with Paul sharing about one of his favorite coping skills: LAYING DOWN. What coping skill are you already utilizing that works? No, you may not read about it on some “Top 10 Coping Skills” list–but if it's working for you, I encourage you to keep doing it and do it more often if possible! Questions for you: What comes up when you think about ways your mom and dad contributed to your codependent behaviors? Do you blame your parents for your codependency? Do you see how their actions contributed to your codependency developing? Or do you sense they did the best they could and it's up to you to heal from codependency? If you had a platform like this podcast, would you talk openly about your relationship with your parents & family or not? If so, how come? If not, why not? Where do you sense you are in your journey in talking openly with others about what you have been through? What have you been met with in response by others when you have spoken honestly? BackgroundOn this episode, I interview Paul Gilmartin, a stand-up comedian since 1987. He has been on several shows including a half-hour slot on Comedy Central's Presents show “Comedy Central Presents Paul Gilmartin.”In 1995 Paul began presenting the cooking and entertainment show on TBS “Dinner and a Movie”. DAAM stopped airing in 2011 and after suffering from severe depression Paul decided to air a podcast on that very subject.“The Mental Illness Happy Hour” began in 2011. A mental health awareness podcast where Paul interviews artists, audience members, listeners and mental health practitioners on mental health subjects, whilst at the same time adding a soupçon of his own comedic genius into the fray. To date, MIHH has been downloaded a staggering 22 million times and has been rated 5/5 on iTunes. As if this wasn't enough MIHH is frequently picked as Editor's Choice by Apple Podcast staff and in 2016 was chosen by Esquire Magazine as that year's best podcast. It has also featured in the PBS documentary “A State of Mind”.Early To BedTune in to hear about Pauls habit of getting up at around noon. He shares that it's perfectly normal for comedians because of late shows and comedians having more to worry about than what time they get up, like, is there an echo in the room that they are about to perform in? Or is the mic on? This, he says, “is the real stress and can be the difference in the career you have, rather than the career you want. Getting laid and getting paid are the two most important parts of being a comedian. If you're funny then well, the ladies will think you're attractive, right?”Paul remembers that he was always funny as a kid but this was more a case of having to be rather than wanting to be. It was more a case of validation, of feeling special. You want to be validated and experience pleasure.InspirationListen in to learn how Paul comes up with his material and the process he follows thereafter. It's different for everyone, according to Paul. “When you first start out you are a nobody. You have no experience whatsoever so you think of things that are going to be the most effective on stage.”Nasty HabitsJoin in to hear Paul share a shockingly dark similarity among most comedians. He reflects that some comedians are a complete disaster offstage but onstage are hilarious geniuses. For others, it is vice versa.Paul shares a disturbing statistic about comedians and the destructive efforts they make to be funny. Paul shares that he has seen some brilliant comedians that just never achieved the success they could have, because of their own self-destruction or addiction. You call that Funny?Paul enlightens us about the side of the comedy world that we don't see. The questions, doubts and constant comparisons comedians indulge in. We learn that comedians are actually perfectionists- always looking to perfect their gigs.Tune in as we cover interesting examples like Chris Tucker and his work.“A greater writer analyzes the comedy, sees it as a philosophy; a way of life, Anyone can write but to write great comedy you have to analyze it and look into its being, its soul.” Deep words from Paul.Move AlongWe learn that Paul's decision to move from “Dinner and a Movie” to “Mental Illness Happy Hour” wasn't his to make. He shares the dark journey of depression, medication and suicide that directed him to his podcast. Join in to hear about his intentions and goals for the podcast that will touch your heart.Paul aims to connect with his guests. Episodes need that vulnerability element. No RegretsThis episode will show you how something as simple as a podcast and helping other people, can positively impact a life. This is precisely what happened to Paul. You will want to hear first hand the huge inspiration his podcast provided to him to change his life for the better. He shares his lifestyle changes and the healthier choices he has gone on to make because of his podcast!AdvicePaul says that his two pieces of advice would be:Have compassion for others but not at the expense of compassion for yourself; andNothing degrades the quality of your life more than obsessing about the quality of your life.Check out the Mental Illness Happy Hour at http://mentalpod.com---More info - http://unpauseyourlife.comSponsored by:The Addictions Academy - The Nation's Leading Accredited Addiction Treatment Services, Recovery/Sober Coaching & Intervention Training Academy: https://theaddictionsacademy.com/Music courtesy of Crowfly - http://crowflyrocks.com/

Today I speak with comedian Paul Gilmartin, former host of Dinner and a Movie on TBS. After leaving standup and television, Gilmartin started The Mental Illness Happy Hour, a podcast that puts the world of living with mental illness into sharp focus and gets a laugh. Gilmartin came up on the comedy scene in Chicago at Second City with people like Bob Odenkirk of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Paul shares the story of his unusual first encounter with Chris Farley. His own recovery from alcoholism and depression led Paul to want to create a stage where he could do comedy but go to the depths of life and it's suffering and to let people dealing with trauma, substance abuse and grief know they're not alone. We talk about being creative while sober and with a healthier mind. Paul is also open about his childhood experience of covert sexual abuse by his mother: "She created a sexualized environment. I would years later come to know that that your body and your soul can experience two different things at the same time. My body was reacting and I blamed myself." After sitting with Paul for two minutes, you realize you could share anything with this guy. He's not afraid to talk about any topic on The Mental Illness Happy Hour, and his many fans credit his persistence at bringing out vulnerability in his guests for their own recovery successes. "God, somebody needs to talk about this. The complexity of mental illness." Laughter is indeed the best medicine, but what is it about the comedic mind then lends itself to darkness? Many comedians suffer from mental disease including depression and substance abuse, but when they walk on stage, their only job is to make people laugh. So interesting. To talk about this fascinating topic on Episode 34, it is my great pleasure to introduce comedian, television personality and podcast host Paul Gilmartin. Since 2011, Paul has been the host and executive producer of the podcast The Mental Illness Happy Hour. The long-format interview style show examines lives affected by mental health issues, including depression, addiction, fear, anxiety, abuse, and gender identity. We are so excited to welcome Paul to the show for some great discussion around comedy and darkness. Topics Discussed on Episode 34: Information on new places to find the better mental health show podcastIntroduction to comedian and actor Paul GilmartinWhat type of person/mind is drawn to comedyWhy do comedians tend to have a strong dark sideHow deep in the darkness did Paul getHow did Paul channel his darkness into his current projectLessons from Paul on ho we can pull ourselves out of the darkness "Don't just be strong, be mental strong!"
Women, it's time to reclaim your place in the world and also it's time to do something gross. Luckily we found someone who was willing to do both. Also, are YOU a ball hog? Are you sure. Maybe you should Try it Out? The great Paul Gilmartin of the Mental Illness Happy Hour podcast joins us for some juvenile fun. We read emails, break down clips and basically act like 6th graders with him and we can't wait to do it again.

As you know, I've been obsessed with being a TV host since I was a kid. And even in my youth, I've always thought Paul Gilmartin was a great host. His first hosting claim to fame was TBS's Dinner and a Movie. He was always so funny, likable, and self deprecating. In 2011, Paul launched The Mental Illness Happy Hour Podcast. This hilarious show takes on the gravity of mental illness, but with a lightness and camaraderie that makes it so relatable and good. It's a show that I am crying from being moved or from laughing at a joke Paul makes. It's in my top 3 fav podcats y'all. When I met Paul at LA Podfest in 2015, I totally fanned him and his response was, "I'd love to do your show". I DIDN'T EVEN ASK...HE JUST OFFERED!!! This guy. So Sweet. Dream come true. Thanks so much Paul. Topics include: I'm stuck in my grief and I don't know how to get out of it, help? I caught my teenage son smoking pot, and my wife is freaking out...should I be as well? I'm pretty sure my husband is cheating on me, should I confront him? Paul Gilmartin, host of the Mental Illness Happy Hour. Paul is a funny guy who hosts one of the most best podcasts on the market today. We have a great chat with Paul and we play a game at the end; borrowed from his show where he, Chris and I take turns exchanging things we are afraid of and things we love. It is certainly the most we have ever gotten from Chris on the air. The Mental Illness Happy Hour is an interview show known for it's candor, depth and intensity. In addition to the interviews Paul reads surveys about their lives filled out by his listeners that are in turn enlightening, horrifying and heartrending. However, the show is ultimately very hopeful. The combination of Paul's' humor, and the hope that is generated when people know they are not alone, gives the show an optimism that transcends the difficult subject matter. From 1995 to 2011 Paul Gilmartin co-hosted TBS' Dinner and a Movie, and has been a stand-up comedian since 1987. His credits include Comedy Central Presents: Paul Gilmartin, numerous Bob and Tom albums, comedy festivals and the Late Show with Craig Ferguson. He is also a frequent guest on the Adam Carolla podcast, performing political satire as right-wing Congressman Richard Martin. In This Interview Paul and I Discuss... The One You Feed parable. Forgiving ourselves for past misdeeds. The healing power of humor when used correctly. Not using humor to avoid feelings or intimacy. How we all have the lightest light and the darkest dark within. The cinematography of The Godfather. His battles with depression both present and past. Not being an expert. That there are no easy answers. That there are no fast fixes. When does positive thinking become denial. Accepting ourselves as we are, and working to change ourselves at the same time. Letting the mistakes of the past inform our decisions for the future. Apologizing without expecting something in return. How we think the way we feel now is the way we will feel forever. How evolution has made us fear based. Avoiding useless rumination. An unshakeable peace....sometimes. Treating depression like the emotional flu. We take Paul's show staple of Love Off and Fear Off and all three of us do it.
