Over the years, car braking systems have evolved from drum brakes toward the use of disc brakes. You will occasionally still see drum brakes being used on the rear of a low-end car, but discs are definitely the majority — and for good reason. Disc brakes never need adjusting, and the braking power usually isn't too adversely affected if they get wet. Drums are supposed to self adjust, but sometimes they don't, and if on the front, can spin you out if one side is adjusted and the other is not, although on the rear, not so much. In this episode I am joined by Dave Atkinson, Mat Brett, Jack Sexty, and Anna Marie-Hughes. We talk about disc brakes and whether they are as good or as bad as some people claim. Anna gives us her insight into using e-bikes for training purposes, whilst Dave, Mat, and Jack discuss the 'ebikes are cheating' phenomena in the UK. As we are now nearly two weeks in to the tour we also look at how the tour is used to launch new tech, how things are 'leaked' to us, and the strange concept of the grand depart.

Episode #18: Brakes is one of the most common places that the cost-per-mile vs. purchase price debate intersects. Over the last 20-years, I have seen fleets and repair shop owners be seduced into buying a skid of low-cost brake material in the hopes that they will save money. It is not entirely surprising that disc brakes (which cost significantly more initially) have not been readily adopted on commercial trucks and trailers. In this episode, we will dive into whether air disc brakes lower your cost-per-mile and are worth the initial additional cost. Recently released FMCSA accident statistics underscore the need for fleets to remain focused on maintaining safe operation, including proper friction for RSD (reduced stopping distance) trucks. On a related note, more fleets are choosing air disc brakes because of the performance and safety advantages they offer. Keith McComsey from the wheel end group at Bendix Spicer Foundation Brake walks through this safety equation.
