Irwindale wasn't just a track for me and the boys—it was a gathering spot, proving ground, and the heart of SoCal's car culture. We're feeling the loss firsthand with the track removed, much like when AAA left the scene. We're witnessing the local car industry shift to other states, leaving SoCal car culture struggling to keep pace. Camping World Truck Series rookie Dean Thompson joins Davey Segal (7:15) to discuss how his first season in NASCAR's National Series is going, how the opportunity with Niece Motorsports came about in the first place and why Carson Hocevar was a major help throughout the process. Thompson dives into his start in racing as a kid before choosing to play hockey over motorsports. He explains why he made that choice and his years as a goalie before eventually coming back to motorsports thanks to Cole Custer inviting him to Auto Club Speedway for a race weekend. After tearing up the local racing scene in California winning multiple track championships at Irwindale Speedway, Thompson went ARCA racing. The next logical step? The Camping World Truck Series. Thompson also gets real about the importance of enjoying racing and not making it purely a job, how he handles those thinking he got to where he is purely based off family money, how he felt racing in his first ever Truck race and more, including forgetting his hard card, his passion for fishing (but getting out-fished by his girlfriend), losing his sunglasses on the water and his goals for the remainder of the 2022 season. Davey discusses Kurt Busch's Kansas Speedway triumph and the career arc of the future Hall of Famer, explains why the All-Star Race isn't doing it for him anymore and Papa Segal pays homage to some guy who made the No. 48 iconic.

San Diego's redistricting committee's proposed district map side steps major shakeups, but there are still changes to be made as it moves on to a final series of public meetings. Plus, with the COP26 Climate Conference over and despite the urgency of the meeting, critics have cast doubt on the political will of global leaders to actually commit to the goals set at the summit. Also, Clifton Hicks, who came from a military family, watched the events of Sept. 11 unfold on television and all he wanted to do was enlist and serve his country. But his deployment to Iraq in 2003 fundamentally changed his relationship to the military. Meanwhile, Nick Irving made a name for himself as a special ops sniper, but civilian life was far less straightforward. Irving shared how he found his calling in the military and beyond. And, every October at L.A's Irwindale Speedway, you'll find a brutal, magnificent thing to behold — The Derby Divas, an all-female demolition derby. Finally, “Hairspray” began its life as an ‘80s campy, indie movie that was turned into a musical. Now, a touring production of the musical is returning to San Diego as Broadway San Diego reopens its doors to live performances. In today's episode, I have the pleasure of inviting Jesse Iwuji. Jesse, at a young age, Dallas, Texas native, and Nigerian-American, he was interested and driven in the sporting world. Being a Texan, football naturally took its course in his life during high school, where he played at Hebron High in Carrollton, TX. Through hard work and perseverance, he landed a full-ride scholarship to one of the nation's top universities, the US Naval Academy. There he played NCAA Division 1-A college football four years, graduated with a Bachelors of Science, and was commissioned as a Surface Warfare Officer in the US Navy. He is still an officer. He has been on two Arabian Gulf deployments totaling out to 15 months of deployment time on two different Naval Warships. Outside of the Navy, Jesse has always had a passion for Motorsports. In 2015 Jesse made history by becoming the first US Naval Officer and Naval Academy graduate to compete in NASCAR. 2015 was Jesse's first official stock car racing season and began it in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Irwindale Speedway. He transitioned toward the end of 2015 into the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West from late-model stock cars. Jesse competed in the 2016 season with Patriot Motorsports Group; he finished Top 10 in the overall points, standing as a Rookie. Upon season-ending, he won the 2016 NASCAR Diverse Driver Award given to a driver in NASCAR's top developmental series who has done most for sports diversity. With more competition and competitors in the series in 2017, Jesse competed in the entire NASCAR K&N Pro Series West season with Patriot Motorsports Group and finished Top 15 in points for his sophomore season in his NASCAR career. In May of 2017, Jesse transitioned from active duty service to the Naval reserves. At the end of 2017, Jesse became a 2-time winner of the NASCAR Diverse Driver award. 2018 marked the beginning of Jesse's move to larger tracks where he could get NASCAR Cup Series type track experience when he began racing the 1.5-2.66 mile Speedways & Super Speedways in the ARCA Series. Jesse finished 13th in points in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West for 2018. On Aug 26th, 2018, Jesse made history again by being the first current serving member of the US Navy to debut in the NASCAR Truck Series where he had a Top 25 finish and, moving into 2019, had multiple Top 20 finishes even on a smaller underfunded team competing against much higher budget teams. Jesse recently made his debut in the 2nd highest tier of NASCAR, the NASCAR Xfinity Series, and looks to continue the journey eventually into the NASCAR Cup Series. Outside of racing & the Navy, Jesse has also starred in various TV & Online shows distributed nationally, owns his own drag racing events company called The Red List Group, and holds a trucking business called JBJE Transportation.

Episode 130 of the creative riding motorcycles podcasting... this was not written by a robot. Welcome back to another glorious week of the *Worlds Best Motorcycle Podcast (*produced within ear-shot of Irwindale Speedway. Opinions are those of the producer, not even the co-hosts and guests. Not available in all regions) There is a lot that has happened over the course of the last 2 or 3 weeks that we have not talked about. The news blotter is getting blotty, and the mail bag is getting heavy (even though it's just e-mail). In segment 1 I'll cover some racing, motorcycles news and points of interest. This week the 3rd annual Motorcycle Podcaster's Challenge has kicked off and I'm as pleased as Party Pants to be joined by Bri Viffer and Nitrous Chris on what is Shaping up to be a great start. We talk strategy and tell the other teams exactly what we're doing, how to win, etc. etc. Last, I do the annual post-Solstice Slam cleaning of topics that are never to be discussed again. It's like spring cleaning, only now it's summer. I hope you enjoy the music in this segment. Lastly, head over to our Zazzle store for some mugs and other stuff that will be popping up there soon. https://www.zazzle.com/creative_riding Leave us a review in iTunes, Sound Cloud, Stitcher, Pocket Cast, Podbean, Tune In radio, Google Play or wherever you find us. Motorcycles, roasts, scooters & hogs Shows, Giving a Shift about the future. This is episode 109. Well, you’ve made it to another episode. Give your self a pat on the back. On this episode we discuss listener feed back, e-mail, and other great input. We have a round of Instagram Shoutouts at the end of the show. Before we begin, I’d like to encourage you to take a ride over to http://creative-riding.com/WPMaster/mugs-for-sale/ and use the link to buy yourself a mug from Zazzle! You’re worth it! In the spirit of the show, you can even customize it and send us pics. We also plopped a sweet panty on our Zazzle store for Valentine’s Day. Part one: Coming to you from KCRMP 83.67 HzM late night DJ Memfiss Bluez reads us in with traffic and weather on the :05s. We have some listener feedback: A horn comparison from Rob Lawrence, some listener mail from Doug MacDonald. We also briefly touch on the continuing conversation regarding Give a Shift and how ALL things 2-wheeled can contribute to the movement. We recorded this week’s episode from Steady Garage (861 Meridian St, Duarte CA 91010). Steady Garage is a full service shop and manufacturing facility. They blow minds with 50cc Honda Ruckuses and make bespoke parts for Harley-Davidsons at the same time. Steady Co-Founder Kevin D. sits down and tells us the story of Steady Garage’s humble beginning. Part two: Roast my bike… Well, let’s just say we bring the kinder-care cut-downs this time. We fucking suck at this. The target this time is talented glass-blower, butterfly collector, and previous guest, Chris Singsime. Chris is a glutton for punishment with not one, BUT TWO(!?!) DRZ400e pieces of cheap shit. Who needs hills when you have Wisconsin? Remember Chris, this all comes from a place of love and comedy, and we just want you to know that we’re saying what others are saying when you’re neck deep in tacos and hot wings. While your’e listening to the show, go check out NitrousChris in instagram and facebook for your chance to see him traveling 175mph on a GSXR! Part three: We continue The Build, this time with a Steady Garage point of view. Turns out you might not even need a license or $1000 to get your sweet custom build on the streets. When you go small, the world is your oyster because anything under 125cc is often overlooked and discounted as Third World travel. Scooters and Groms have a lot of potential, and offer a platform that allows for easy customization and a great place to start learning to ride. Kevin offers up some pertinent information about how and what to start a custom Small Build with. We also talk about other countries where people ride 50-125cc bikes with 12 people on them or drag race with nothing more than flip flops and shorts on. Part 4: Kevin talks about some of the things that Steady Garage has in store for the future. From Joes Mini Bike Reunion to UMRA 24 hour endurance races, they have done it all already, but 2018 will prove to be another massive year for the crew. They want to add drag racing to their growing repertoire of activities, and expand their parts catalog offerings. Small bikes can be cheap, fun, and ultimately really fucking cool. If you get a chance to visit Irwindale Speedway, Flanders Racing (their industrial neighbor) or are cruising through the San Gabriel Valley in L.A. County, stop by and grab some parts for your Scoot or your H-D Bagger. Also you can expect a bit of filler at the end about e-bikes. They are like e-cigs, but for your butt. Thanks for listening. Have a great day. Send your questions, rants, raves, and bike roast suggestions to: creativeridingpodcast@gmail.com Leave a review in iTunes, Sound Cloud, Stitcher, Tune In, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. Jim Liaw grew up in Southern California and was immediately drawn to the street racing scene. But his passion really started when he saw an E30 BMW M3 and fell in love with the looks. During college, he reached out to any automotive related business he could think of looking for a job or internship. He landed a spot at Sport Compact Car as an intern working on finding new sponsors for the magazines. His next job was in the import drag racing with the IDRC series and sold sponsorships and booth spaces for their races. The next position was at Vision Entertainment that produced Hot Import Nights doing more sponsorship managements. Jim then teamed up with a friend to start Slipstream Global Marketing with the goal of helping companies optimize their promotional spend at events. They landed a big client with Mazda and worked with them to increase youth awareness to the Mazda brand at motorsports events. In 2003, Jim gets word that the Japanese want to hold a drifting exhibition event in the United States. Their first event at Irwindale Speedway was a huge success! Despite this, the Japanese counterparts weren’t too keen on hosting more events. So, Jim and his partner set out to create their own drifting series and called it Formula Drift.  Since then, they have been growing the series every year. They employ 6 other people and are holding 8 events in 2017. They stream all of the races for free on the internet and strive to provide the ultimate experience for the fans.

Holy atomic warheads, Hank!  Must be the Garage Hour, because that talk show just ricocheted from battle beards to the big guns on display at the Yuma Proving Grounds, then back to stock 4G Evolution blocks, LA traffic and the big metal sound of Testament live in the Hollywood Bowl.  Oh, and how to buy and sell your car and truck parts (plus all the secret stuff) on Craiglist without being taken for a fool (or worse).  Plus, it's really funny. Now that's a spicy meatball (or in this case, four of them): Hostus Maximus Justin Fort, Mr. Dustin (Top Earner), .45 Phil (That Which Goes Bump in the Night), and Eryk from CalGuns.net.  Grab two hours of the best AM talk - gearhead talk - since Top Gear full of beer. It's not all gearhead, however...  Oh wait, yes it is.  Tanks, tracks, beer and Broncos, Irwindale Speedway and the Sarcasmotron 5000, French tanks and Mexican Beetles, jarheads and the chair force, cyborgs and crack mayors, unphoning and uploading (more podcasts!), and we build the official Communist Party ad for Agent Aya's official CCCP Mini Turbo.
