Their reporting solution empowers attraction leaders to make well-informed decisions, based on real-time data. New Vue also build slick websites that elevate your digital guest experience and provide strategic support to help you with booking systems and all of your IT needs. Jim Futrell is the Historian for the National Amusement Park Historical Association and IAAPA. With over 40 years of experience researching and preserving amusement park history, Jim has authored multiple books and articles on the subject and is recognized as a leading voice in the field. In this interview, Jim talks about amusement park history, putting context on history, and shared experiences across generations. Amusement Park History “One of the first watershed moments in amusement park history was the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. It gave birth to the modern amusement park industry.” Jim discussed how the exposition introduced the Midway Plaisance, which became a blueprint for amusement parks worldwide. Attractions like the Ferris wheel captivated visitors, and the fair's profitability from entertainment inspired park developers to embrace thrilling rides and immersive environments. Jim highlights key moments, such as the development of John Miller's under-friction wheel in 1919, which revolutionized roller coaster safety and design. This innovation allowed coasters to evolve from scenic rides to thrilling centerpieces of amusement parks. According to Jim, these milestones laid the foundation for the resilient and ever-evolving amusement park industry we know today. Putting Context on History “Being a true historian isn't just memorizing facts—it's about contextualizing them within a broader framework.” Jim emphasized how understanding historical context deepens our appreciation of amusement parks. For instance, he explored how global events like World War I and II transformed the industry. After World War II, the rise of suburbanization and interstate highways shifted parks from urban centers to sprawling suburban attractions, such as Disneyland. He also shared examples of how past myths about the industry, such as Disney's alleged detachment from IAAPA or the history of Blackpool Pleasure Beach's membership, were debunked through diligent research. For Jim, the essence of amusement park history lies in connecting these moments to broader societal changes. Shared Experiences Across Generations “Amusement parks are one of the few places where you can share the same experience across generations.” Jim passionately described how amusement parks enable families to create multi-generational memories. He shared a personal story about how his family has ridden Kings Island's carousel for six generations, underscoring the industry's ability to preserve nostalgia while remaining relevant to new audiences. Jim noted that balancing tradition with innovation is critical for parks. They must honor iconic attractions while introducing new experiences that resonate with modern guests. For example, parks like Knoebels and Kennywood have thrived by preserving their history and making forward-thinking investments.   Jim Futrell's dedication to preserving amusement park history offers valuable insights into how the industry's past shapes its future. Penn State is making a buyout offer to employees at its Commonwealth Campuses -- including those in Harrisburg, York, Mont Alto, and Reading. Faculty Senators are not holding back in  expressing frustration and criticism of the plan.  Several communities across the state -- including Philadelphia -- are turning to “tough-on-crime” approaches to address drug use and the opioid crisis. But, some families who've lost loved ones to drug overdoses are pushing back on strategies that rely on criminalization. Pennsylvania's severe rainstorms drop more water than they did decades ago. A new analysis shows how climate change is “supercharging” rain events. If you  have ever wanted to spend the night on a historic battlefield,  now you have the chance at the Gettysburg National Military Park. Episode 244: Brain Knoebel talks about recreating the past, family first and prioritizing value

AttractionPros Podcast

Brian Knoebel is a Co-Owner/Co-Manager of Knoebels Amusement Resort in Elysburg, PA.  Brian began his career at Knoebels before he can even remember; at three years old Brian and his older brother Rick would separate ride tickets by color for the staff to count and add up how much revenue was made that day.  Since then, Brian has held nearly every role one can have at the park, from mowing grass, picking paper, ride operations, games, food & beverage, ticket sales, and blowing up balloons for the dart game.  Brian's educational background is in food and hospitality management, and takes immense pride that Knoebels is family first, then a business, rather than the other way around.  In this interview, Brian talks about recreating the past, family first, and prioritizing value. Recreating the past   “What's our niche?  It's recreating the past.”   Knoebels is the throwback, traditional quintessential amusement park of yesterday.  Knoebels has no gate and offers free admission, free parking, free entertainment, and a free picnic area.  While there is an option for a wristband, everything is a la carte.  If grandparents are taking their grandchild to the park, they don't have to pay to park or pay for admission for anything they do not partake in.   The property also includes farmland, and the Knoebels family used to make and sell charcoal, farm Christmas trees, and people would come in on horseback on the weekends, swim in the swimming hole, and have a picnic.  Brian's grandfather, Henry Knoebel built a picnic pavilion and began building amusement rides shortly thereafter.   Knoebels's rich history can still be sensed by park guests today. Family first   “We are family first.  We don't have board of directors meetings, we have family meetings.”   Brian shares stories about growing up at the park and playing kickball in front of the guest services office, and how the park was his backyard.  Today, everyone has their own individual roles, but no one looks over each other's shoulders.  Even job titles are rarely used within the Knoebels family.   Within many family businesses, there often comes a time when the family has to determine if they are a family or if they are a business, due to the challenges that can arise from running a business with close relatives.  The Knoebel family has never had to have this discussion.  The Knoebels have always operated with the understanding that they are a family first and business second. Prioritizing value   "The business model has always been value, and it works."   Knoebels has a business model that differs from the majority of gated amusement parks.  With no gate, no admission fee, no charge for parking, and free entertainment, the park presents immense value for its guests.  Brian references Sam Walton multiple times in the interview, stating that if guests perceive value then they will want to do it again and tell others.   When relocating the Phoenix to Knoebels in 1985, the park hired an accounting firm to determine the most optimal price per ride to charge guests.  While the firm recommended $3 per ride, Pete Knoebel made the decision to charge $1 instead.  Despite the data from the study, Pete wanted guests to ride multiple times.   During family meetings, Buddy Knoebel regularly brings value into the conversation.  This commitment is maintained even during economic fluctuation and inflation, or even when their utilities and cost of goods rise. To learn more about Knoebels, you can visit knoebels.com, and follow on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat.  New this year, Knoebels has an app that guests can download to improve their experience at the park.   This podcast wouldn't be possible without the incredible work of our amazing team: Scheduling and correspondence by Kristen Karaliunas Branding and design by Fabiana Fonseca To connect with AttractionPros: attractionpros@gmail.com

The story of the path Harry Deitz, Senior walked remains a remarkable one, out of the Pennsylvania coal mines, to the US Army and to a long and distinguished career as a photographer and journalist. His son, Harry, Jr. followed in some of his father's footsteps, and has chronicled the man's life and times in "Our Father's Journey: A Path Out of Poverty." In this conversation with Sunbury Press Books Show host Lawrence Knorr, the younger Deitz talks of how his father's passing interest in photography became his ticket out of a hard life. Learning the craft in postwar Japan, Deitz began working in Shamokin, Pennsylvania as a photographer, reporter and editor. He also authored a history of the Knoebels amusement park for its 75th anniversary. Harry Deitz, Jr. also has his own impressive resume, with a 45-year career as an award-winning photographer, sportswriter and editor, and ten years as editor-in-chief of the "Reading Eagle" newspaper before his reitrement in 2018. He is known for his weekly "Editor's Notebook" column, which included many stories about his family, including his three children and six grandchildren, plus the personal tale of serving as his late wife's primary caregiver during her battle with Parkinson's Disease and cancer. Deitz has also served as president and board member of the Pennsylvania Newsmedia Assocation and the Pennsylvania Associated Press Managing Editors.

The excitement has been building, at least for Paul & Janine...... okay, maybe just Paul but it's finally time to share with the world our top 25 coasters as of 2021. Our little adventure has 320 credits in the last four years so these top 25 coasters are truly the best of the best.  While we don't want to spoil the episode, here is a list of the parks where these coasters reside : Dorney Park (we know, we are shocked also), Sea World Orlando, Dollywood, Kentucky Kingdom, Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Carowinds, Hersheypark, Kings Dominion, Busch Gardens Tampa, Cedar Point, Knoebels (we bet it's Flying Turns), Six Flags Over Georgia, Kings Island, Six Flags New England, and Six Flags Great Adventure. It's that time of the year again, time for the 125 Roller Coaster Challenge worst 25 roller coasters we have ridden.  These coasters are so bad that most of them actually hurt. Join Paul & Janine as we discuss each coaster and why they are on the list.  Not to ruin the surprise, we are going to share the parks where the rides are rather than give you the complete list.  The parks (and number of coasters they have that made the list) include: Six Flags Great Adventure, Carowinds, and Six Flags New England each have three coasters on this list. Kings Dominion, Six Flags Darien Lake, Six Flags America, and Canada's Wonderland each have two coasters on the list. Hersheypark, Kings Island, Playland @ Rye, Knoebels, Conneaut Lake Park, Casino Pier, La Ronde, Worlds of Fun, and even the great Cedar Point have a ride on our list. Back by popular demand is our newest Coaster Style ERT and this time we have a special guest, Kylee!! Yes she is back to offer her insight and opinions on a few of the 19 Looping coasters we will be discussing.  That's right, we have 19 coasters we will be discussing and ranking which is why this is one of our longest episodes to date.  Highlighted coasters include : Wildfire at Silver Dollar City, Kumba & Scorpion at Busch Garden Tampa, Whirlwind at Knoebels, Sooper Dooper Looper at Hersheypark and fifteen more. Will the paint job on Carolina Cyclone help it's ranking? Is Anaconda the worst Arrow Looper?  Is there actually a good one? Was getting rid of Vortex a mistake at Kings Island? Are some of questions we will be pondering in this episode so sit back, enjoy the discussion, and then crush us in the comment section. Last year we downloaded our first ever episode of the Trimmed & Stapled podcast so how do we celebrate?  We download our first ever crossover on our 50th episode (yes we know it says 49 but you have to remember our intro which is episode 0). For this ERT, Paul sits down with John from Thrill Seekers Podcast (check them out, if you like what we do, you will love what they do) and they discuss the local holiday events taking place at their homeparks. Paul talks about Sweet Lights & Christmas Candylane at Hershey Park, Holiday in the Park at Six Flags Great Adventure, and Joy Through the Grove at Knoebels. John discusses the two holiday events he visited while at IAAPA (yes we are extremely jealous) which were Sea World Orlando and Busch Garden's Tampa.  He also talks about his local parks at Six Flags St. Louis & Great America and Silver Dollar City. While discussing these amazing events, they both go off course a bit talking about upcoming coasters, random holiday feasts, and the joys of a decent hyper coaster.  We love talking to fellow enthusiasts and we can't wait to cross over again in the near future. So sit back as you drive to your Thanksgiving destinations, start planning your Black Friday shopping, and dream of all the new attractions coming in to the parks in 2022.  Thank  you for all your support in the last year (over 3k in downloads) and make sure you check out our final episode of the Cedar Point saga on Tuesday when Paul & Janine discuss Coaster Mania and rank their favorite coasters at America's Roller Coast.
