Westchester County officials say Rye Playland amusement park will open in time for the season after all. Also, two New York City hospitals have agreed to a $750 million dollar settlement of hundreds of sexual abuse claims by patients of former gynecologist Robert Hadden. Plus, New York State lawmakers are loosening requirements for private and religious schools to show they provide a basic education. And finally, some undocumented immigrants are opting to leave the country on their own, rather than risk deportation.
Join us for a rebroadcast of a classic episode on the western themed, Fun-Tier Town which was added to Playland at the Beach in 1960. It featured rides that were designed to be enjoyed by younger children. And for special occasions, there was a large room in a western motif, where parents could purchase a party package (food and favors) that could host 20 or more sugar-fueled screaming kids.
Because of the Happy Meal McDonalds is the world's largest toy distributor. Larger than Hasbro or Mattel. This is an Empire! Dave Young: Welcome to The Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is... Well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So here's one of those. [Out Of This World Plumbing Ad] Dave Young: Welcome back to The Empire Builders Podcast. Dave Young here, along with Stephen Semple, and I was ranting and raving about a new book I'm fascinated with and crazed about. And Stephen hit the record button and decided we were going to talk about Happy Meals instead of that. So here we are. Happy Meals, huh? Stephen Semple: Happy Meals, yeah. Dave Young: The McDonald Happy Meal. The precursor to the Playland. I've always enjoyed going through the McDonald's drive-through and ordering a happy meal, whether I had a kid in the car or not. Stephen Semple: I could see you doing that. Dave Young: And then sometimes they look and go, "Well, where's the kid?" I'm like, "Hey, mind your own business about the kid." Stephen Semple: They're in the trunk. Dave Young: There's a kid somewhere. Give me my damn toy. Stephen Semple: I was going to ask, what's your favorite part? Is it the toy? Dave Young: Absolutely. You can get a nugget, a few of them. Stephen Semple: Well, here's the crazy thing is it is the most sold meal in history. There's been like 35 billion happy meals sold. Dave Young: Is it, really? That's a lot of happy. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Dave Young: Sure. Stephen Semple: And it actually makes McDonald's one of the largest toy distributors in the world. They've given away billions of toys. Dave Young: Oh, sure they did. Stephen Semple: More toys than Hasbro or Mattel. Dave Young: And just controversy like when they were giving away Beanie Baby toys. Good Lord, people were losing their minds. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Yeah. Dave Young: I'm trying to think of who this is. It might be our mutual friend, Gordon. Somebody in our circle tells a story about their dad driving the family through McDonald's when they were kids and everybody getting really excited because like, "I'm going to get a Happy Meal." And their dad orders one cup of coffee and just keeps going. I'm like, "Oh, man, that would suck." Stephen Semple: That would be a very unhappy car. Dave Young: So when did the Happy Meal start? Stephen Semple: There's a bit of a debate about who actually created the Happy Meal. So we're going to explore a couple of the different stories, but it was basically 1974. Dave Young: Okay. Yeah. Stephen Semple: One of the stories is it was created in Guatemala by Dona Yoly and her husband who opened the first franchise in that country. Dave Young: Wow. Stephen Semple: And Dona wanted her restaurant to feel like a family restaurant. Look, she understood things had to be done the McDonald's way- Dave Young: Sure. Stephen Semple: ... to the corporate standards because McDonald's even has a Hamburger University- Dave Young: Oh, yeah. Yeah. Stephen Semple: ... which was a brainchild of Fred Turner, and it's a training program for franchisees. We could even do a thing on Hamburger University because it was the first of its type. It was the first training program of its type for franchisees. So there's always this thing that McDonald's is trying to set where there's this goal of a consistent experience, but they also want to give franchisees some freedom because what they have found is that franchisees oft...

Hi-ho the me-ri-o! Courtney and Emily have no strings to hold them down as they celebrate the 85th anniversary of Walt Disney Animation's second motion picture, Pinocchio, by comparing the film to Carlo Collodi's original novel, “The Adventures of Pinocchio: Story of a Puppet.” Collodi's episodic adventure takes readers to the puppet show, the not so wondrous meadows, Playland, the bottom of sea…pretty much everywhere that is not school as Pinocchio learns to accept the consequences of his actions and tries to become a real boy. Merry Christmas, Slackers!Christmas was so much simpler as a kid. All it really took to make you happy was that one big Santa gift. And boy, did the 70's & 80's have some great toys! This episode I recount some of my favorite toys from each year - I have a weirdly specific memory when it comes to Christmas - going from 1976 until about 1984. From Remco's McDonald's Playland (and figures), to the Millennium Falcon, to the King of Pop, those Christmas mornings were full of joy & gratitude, that somehow transcended the obvious consumerism on display. Sure, there may have been a year or two with no real “must have gift”, but even then the excitement of unwrapping even the most mundane of gifts (who doesn't like Christmas socks?), was palpable. At some point Christmas becomes so much more about the giving than receiving, but there is that odd time in your mid teens where the shine of the day is just a little less than it used to be. Having a house full of teens now, I can see it happening, and it is such a bummer. It is also a part of life and growing up - I just hope they recognize the cure for that is the giving! Now on to 2024!
In this episode, the amazingly talented and hilarious actor Will Blagrove joins me to talk about leaving law school to pursue an acting career. We discuss several actors that have started liquor brands and I immediately become obsessed with being the marketing director for Blagrove Bourbon. We also create movie magic with a cold script read of some of the best arguments I could find between my neighbors on the Next Door app. I take the opportunity to ask Will for some much needed legal advice and we talk about his latest film "The Christmas Classic." Will has several other projects coming up including "American Rust" with Jeff Daniels. And we find out which New York borough every McDonald's Playland character is probably from. Spoiler alert: Mayor McCheese is from Manhattan, obviously.

An award-winning global director of cirque, cinema and stage. As a comic act designer he specializes in clowns, characters and story components. Stefan is the author of The Power of HA!Connecting Through the Heart of Humor. He studied theatre in college only to realize that his true passion lay in the cross-over to the circus arts, so he set his sights on Cirque du Soleil. As a result of his intuitive gift for mining actors' true potential, various sit-coms hired him to coach actors, including The Roseanne Show. After self-producing a number of critically acclaimed plays in Hollywood and New York City (Call of the Wild, Midsummer Nite's Text, Your Town Follies, Moon Over Madness, Atomic Holiday Lift-Off) he traveled to Europe to juggle on the streets and study with the premiere master-teacher, Philippe Gaulier. This move resulted in a collaboration with Bill Irwin and David Shiner on the Tony- winning show Fool Moon. Haves was then poached by Cirque du Soleil, collaborating on clown and character performances within six touring and resident productions (Kooza, Iris, Amaluna, Banana Shpeel, Zaya, and Drawn to Life). Prior to that, he wrote and directed the world-class Teatro Zinzanni—a dinner/ cabaret featuring such luminaries as Joan Baez. Today, Stefan Haves is a trusted international thought-leader who was tapped to present a TedX Talk in New Delhi, India, and was invited to conduct personal appearances for blue-chip companies like PepsiCo, Infosys, Mindtree, and Barclays Bank. He gleefully shares his innovative message on the role of humor, creativity, and effective expression gleaned from the stage and applied to the corporate workplace. In 2021 Haves was granted the opportunity to co-direct Katy Perry's Playland-branded New Year's dinner/cirque event at Hilton's Resort World in Las Vegas. Earlier in his career, Haves cut his teeth as an actor and a visual-comedian who appeared on stages and television shows worldwide—even garnering $10,000 on America's Funniest People by performing his signature piece "Back-Man". Stefan's 2016 original conception of the spectacle Festigal, in which Haves was tasked to showcase famous pop celebrities from television's Romania's Got Talent, used a Cirque du Soleil aesthetic in a stadium setting. His cinematic offerings include the award-winning short film Punch Drunk, featuring Academy Award nominee Sally Kellerman (M*A*S*H) and full-length feature Stalled starring Doug Jones (Pan's Labyrinth).
