The Dragon's Back Race is a 6 day stage race that runs the length of Wales covering 380km and over 17000m on completely unmarked terrain. Will and Alyssa dive into Alyssa's race results and running prior to Dragon's Back and the mindset, training and nutrition changes she has made in the past year. They then break down the ups and downs of the race and the pressure cooker that is stage racing. If you've been eyeing a multi-day adventure or event, tune in for the good, the bad and the ugly of its unique challenges.

Seriously? FIVE years? Of this? Weird. We go back to our roots for this episode by interviewing a couple of people that we know, but one of them did the Dragon's Back Race, so that's pretty cool. There's also some nostalgia for how shit we were at the beginning, stories about actual shit, shit singing, and someone at a race who was a shit (allegedly).

Nicki Rehn is an Australian-Canadian who loves the beach, but is hopelessly addicted to the mountains so has spent most of her adult life in Calgary, AB, Canada. She came to adventure and endurance sports by way of competitive triathlon and road marathon. It's been over a decade since she raced on pavement, preferring instead adventure racing, mountain biking, ultramarathon running, fast-packing, skiing, orienteering, and mountain scrambling. When not running, Nicki works as an education consultant. She also loves to travel and write. In this episode, we discuss Nicki's upbringing in Australia and her female unsupported fastest know time (FKT) of the 1000km Bibbulmun Track in Western Australia as well as what inspires her to attempt such epic distances in epic places. This lady runner is a 3 time finisher of Tor des Geants (a 330km race in Italy),  5 time attendee at the Barkley Marathons, second place finisher at Sinister 7 100m and Fat Dog 120m and has even done the Dragon's Back Race in Wales on a punishing 305km course that will test the very best.  While Nicki has a resume that will stun even the most accomplished ultrarunner, we primarily invited her on the podcast to talk about her most experience of running the Snowman Race in Bhutan with an invite from the king himself.Strap into your seats or drop the hammer on your run because this episode is bound to leave you feeling like you can accomplish anything!Connect with Nicki:Blog: nickirehn.blogspot.comInstagram: @nicki_rehnResources we discussed in this episode:Joanna Ford on Inspired Soles (Ep 98)The Barkley MarathonsLunana: A Yak in the Classroom Favourite Mantra: Surrender to the existenceFavourite Place to Run: Bragg CreekBucket List Race: Madeira Island Ultra TrailFavourite Running Book/Movie: Endure by Alex HutchinsonFavourite Post Run Indulgence: Beer and chipsConnect with Carolyn & Kim:Kim's InstagramKim's FacebookCarolyn's InstagramCarolyn's FacebookCarolyn's website (sign up for her free weekly newsletter on the homepage)We love hearing from you! Earlier this month saw the 7th edition of the Montane Dragon's Back Race, a multi-day race dissecting Wales. With a distance of 236 miles and an elevation gain of over 57,000 ft it's a 6 day event not for the faint of heart! This week we get a first-hand, up close, and personal account of just what it takes to complete what is a gruelling route. Our guest Alasdair Meldrum enlightens us with his 2022 Dragon's Back Race story. Still on a high after completing the vaunted Cape Wrath Ultra in 2021 Ayr based Alasdair threw his hat in the ring and signed up for the 2022 Dragon's Back. Feeling prepped by success in the north of Scotland little did he realise the challenge that lay ahead. Tackling Wales beautiful yet rugged terrain the Dragon takes the high road from the North of Wales to Cardiff in the South. So what does prepping, taking part and the aftermath of look like? Listen to Alasdair tell us all, and of course there is a good delve into the food on offer. We hear of never-ending climbs, of spine-tingling ridges and daunting descents. A big focus of our conversation centres on Alasdair's race management for the event, not just the running and moving part but the meticulous approach needed to camp-life routine to aid success. Fighting cramps, looking after feet, fuelling, and sleeping. We cover plenty ground as we make our way down the Dragon's Back in pursuit of the finish line. Alasdair had a race plan, that race plan was executed exquisitely. So, whether you fancy a multistage event yourself or baulk at the mere thought we're certain you'll be inspired and informed by Alasdair's story. Come join us and get mingin' along the way.

Hello and welcome to Further Faster, in association with Montane. I'm Daniel Neilson and it's my job to talk to ultra athletes, explorers, climbers and mountaineers who are at the top of their game, to find out why they do what they do and how they do what they do.  So, we could call this episode a Dragon's Back Race special. A little ode to a big race - a race big enough to be described as the toughest mountain race in the world.  The 2021 edition of the race - setting off in September - covers 380km of the most beautiful Welsh landscape in 6 days, a height gain of 17,400 metres.   And in some ways, the next 40 minutes with Lowri Morgan and Chris Baynham-Hughes is that – these are two people passionate about the Dragon's Back Race, but really what this three-way chat became was an insight into the power of races like this to foster friendships, to push boundaries that in turn benefit all elements of life, and why participating in events like this is a privilege, an adventure and, most importantly, a joy.

Episode #9 welcomes a man who's not only a living legend in the worlds of climbing and mountain running, but also the organisational driving force behind the Dragon's Back Race, the Cape Wrath Ultra, Skyline Scotland, and the Great Lakeland 3Dday. That means that we could only be talking about one person: Shane Ohly.Shane first entered the scene in his teens/20s as a sponsored climber found energetically attacking everything from Cornish crags to the Eiffel Tower, with a brutal 2003 “502 routes in 18hrs” epic thrown in for good measure. Since then he's turned to running for his kicks and - amongst many other mind-boggling achievements - has finished first in the 53-year-old epic OMM Elite three times (!).The real questions are: does he feel fear while free climbing? Would he get on with his “brash, careless” 18-year-old self? And does he ever just sit on the couch eating crisps…?You can find out more about Shane via shaneohly.com and follow him on Twitter and Instagram. In this episode I talk to Olly who decided that some fast marathons were ideal prep for a race described as “The World's Toughest Mountain Race” and entered the Dragon's Back Race, a mere jog down the length of Wales, over 5 days. It covers 195 miles with some serious climbing, starting in Conwy and finishing in Llandeilo in South West Wales. He has some great tips and advice on what it takes to complete this awesome challenge. For more irreverent running nonsense head to www.runlikeduck.co.uk For the race head to www.dragonsbackrace.com

What's Trees Not Tees & why is it vital? Co-founder & Dragon's Back Race winner Jim Mann explains

Really looking forward to this live chat with talented mountain runner Jim Mann who is equally passionate about protecting the environment we all love to run in. Jim recently co-founded Trees Not Tees, whereby race organisers can plant a tree for each competitor rather than create them a t-shirt. Millions of race t-shirts get thrown into landfill or taken to charity shops each year, so this is an absolutely fantastic option for race organisers. https://www.treesnottees.com/ First we will set the scene, talking to Jim about some of his races and records - 2015 Dragon's Back Race winner, Spine Challenger record-holder 2019, winter Ramsay Round record holder 2017 and previous winter Bob Graham holder until Dec 2019. Follow Jim on twitter here https://twitter.com/jimmann23   Then we will move on to talk about what Trees Not Tees is, how it works, what it means to him, why it's so important to get as many people on board as possible, and what you can do further to help the cause.   I personally really LOVE this idea and I would like to team our Nene Valley Races event up with Jim and his company. We didn't have an option for a tee anyway, but a tree option would be fantastic for people. So watch this space! Record-holder & ultra running coach Marcus Scotney explains what it takes to train for and complete the 250 mile (400km) 8-day Cape Wrath Ultra in Scotland, UK. (Scroll down for links to other useful films and gear we mentioned) In this episode you'll find out how Marcus recommends training for this epic wilderness ultra, why he doesn't recommend doing back to back days or long strength training sessions in the gym. We also talk about what he considers essential kit, the importance of what he calls “Bagmin”, what did he ate as a vegetarian at that time, how hard the navigation is, and how best to manage yourself at camp each night to avoid fatigue, injury and blisters. Finally he compares Cape Wrath Ultra to the 5-day Dragon's Back Race across Wales, and other multi-day ultras he has completed like The Coastal Challenge, the Spine Race, the UTMB and almost the Marathon des Sables.
