Episode 202 of The Adventure Podcast features, long distance runner and construction worker, Jack Scott. Over the past few years Jack has grabbed the attention of the British ultra running scene for some stellar achievements that most people in the know thought were literally impossible. In 2024 Jack won the infamous Spine Race, a 268-mile ultramarathon along the Pennine Way, shattering the previous course record by over 10 hours. This isn't a conversation discussing trail shoes or favourite energy gels, instead this episode gives an insight into Jack's mind, attitude and where he finds his motivation. He talks to Matt about his previous gambling addiction and the 'dark and dangerous' place he has learnt to use, his Spine Race losses and win, his training mentality, and the importance of giving yourself time to grow. We've all said it — “there just aren't enough hours in the day.” But Jasmin Paris proves otherwise. In 2019, she won the gruelling 268-mile Spine Race — not only becoming the first woman to win it, but beating the men's course record by 12 hours. Alongside being an elite ultrarunner, Jasmin is a mum, a vet, and lives a full family life. She's a brilliant example of what it looks like to prioritise what truly matters. From the front, pushing all the way!For the TRAILS part of the interview we hit Kims local fells around Blencathra, in the Lake District. Taking in the local trails that he used to prepare for all 4 of his Spine Races over the years. For the HOME part, we sit down in Kim's kitchen and dive into his 'CONFIDENCE' approach for this year. An exercise that involved him writing down the word 'Confidence' on a piece of paper and then writing all the reasons he had for confidence going into this years race.Kim talks openly about his struggles over the years to get the result he wanted, in the way he wanted it to happen. He is also very open in his thoughts on the infamous Spine kit list! This is a long form conversation with one of the greatest UK trail runners of all time. Sit down with a coffee and enjoy HOME TRAILS Ep:3URS

“While I was doing the Spine, even though I was on my own on the Pennine Way, it felt like I had the other Black Trail Runners around me.”What started as a reluctant attempt to stay active quickly became a passion for Rebecca Devereux. Her journey was fast and within three years she was standing on the cusp of one of Britian's most grueling races. The Winter Spine Race is notoriously difficult. It also had a really convenient finish line just a few minutes from Rebecca's house. It was a challenge she couldn't resist and so she was in. Community Trail Running is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. As much as the race was about personal triumph, it was also about community. Black Trail Runners had been crucial to her growth in trail running. When she first stood at the start line of a race a year into her running journey, she was the only person of colour. It was an experience that left her feeling isolated, despite being used to predominately white spaces in her career and community. The disconnect sat with her until she met Sabrina Pace-Humphries at a talk and heard more about Black Trail Runners. That sense of solidarity gave Rebecca the strength she needed, knowing that she wasn't just running for herself. This new community gave Rebecca energy and a sense of belonging in the sport, and this helped her push herself into such a challenging race."I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Black Trail Runners. I wouldn't have been in that race. I wouldn't be on this podium. They've been such an important part of my running journey.”It was awesome chatting with Rebecca and hearing her story. It's so incredible how fast she's taken to the sport and amazing to think what else she might accomplish! I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did.Trail Running Film FestivalWe're incredibly excited to be hosting the Trail Running Film Festival once more. It would be amiss of us as part of our Winter Spine mop up not have a debrief with one of the winners, right? Step forward Lucy Gossage to fulfil that role. The ex pro triathlete and now (accidental) runner took the win after the toughing it out on the famed 268 mile race up the Pennine Way. We're mighty chuffed to hear her tell her tale of triumph through adversity as she nailed the race of her life at her 2nd attempt at the Spine, after all 2024 is so last year. Lucy picks up her tale of finding running during the covid pandemic, at a time when the world was a strange place and, for her personally, the end of a magnificent career in triathlon was drawing to a close. We're astounded to hear how much she's managed to raise for her charity Move Against Cancer and find out more about some of the magnificent work being undertaken to promote physical activity. Of course the 2025 Spine Race is the headline act and Lucy regales her journey through training, to the start line in Edale and on to a victorious conclusion in Kirk Yetholm. She's candid and open of the role personal heartache and betrayal played, on closing that chapter she's already started an exciting new one that she is evidently buzzing about. It's a terrific insight into the mind and motivation of an elite athlete who is so in touch with her own mindset. A story of transferring strength and resilience built through years of triathlon racing and applying it to a new discipline, just so happens that discipline is ultra marathoning. And aren't we the lucky benefactors of welcoming such prowess to the wonderful running community. Now, go get your lugs around this cracker, it does not disappoint. Find out more and make a donation to Lucy's charity MOVE AGAINST CANCER here
Get in touch with Ultrarunning Sam here ⬅️In this episode of the podcast I speak to rising ultra star Sam Skinner!Sam shot to fame in 2023 when he took 2nd place at the Centurion Winter Downs 200. Since then he's steadily made a name for himself as one of the nicest guys in ultramarathon. But don't let that fool you....Sam is one determined cookie! We talk about his route into ultras, which involved some serious life adjustments. From a stalled career in football, then as a boxer, Sam was a sportsman in every sense except one.....he was addicted to binge drinking!Sam put all of this behind him to not only quit drinking, but also to restart his life as an athlete. Focusing his 'all or nothing' drive into training for long ultras and at the same time building a community of runners with his George and Falcon Trail Running Group. A community designed for likeminded trail runners to come together through the love of the trails.Sam's journey led him to this years Spine Race which is obviously where our paths crossed!Sam spent much of the race at the sharp end, running with the leaders for the majority of the race until he found his pacing stride with Robyn Cassidy who he stayed with until reaching Kirk Yetholm.Sam ran the Spine in aid of a cancer charity that is close to his heart. Please follow the below link to donate and also look up the George and Falcon running group.https://www.justgiving.com/page/samuel-skinner-1732141833668?utm_medium=FR&utm_source=CLURS
Get in touch with Ultrarunning Sam here ⬅️In this episode I speak to long time podcast listener and friend of the show, Alice Kershaw!Alice could possibly be a bigger fan of the Spine Race than even I am, which is saying something obviously!Alice loves the race so much that she's ran nearly all of the (now) 4 races in the summer and the winter editions. With podiums places in the Sprint, South and full Summer Spine Race! So it's safe to say that she's a fully paid up member of the Spine Family! In this interview we dive into Alice's training and laid back, sometimes fun approach to racing. We talk about her best and worst bits of this years race and her opinion on the coverage that the women's race got.Alice is an infectious joyful person that I challenge anyone to meet and not feel cheered up afterwards!
Mel Sykes is an ultra-marathon runner from Holmfirth, West Yorkshire. She has an inspiring story of resilience and determination. Mel was diagnosed with a rare brain condition called Chiari malformation, which caused her to lose her balance, suffer double vision, and experience other severe symptoms. After undergoing brain surgery in October 2023, doctors told her she might never run again. However, Mel proved them wrong! Just four months after her surgery, she ran an 18-mile race, and now she's preparing to take on the 268-mile Spine Race!Mel's journey is a testament to her incredible strength and perseverance.https://teaandtrails.com/https://www.patreon.com/teaandtrailshttps://www.youtube.com/@teaandtrailshttps://www.teaandtrailsultra.com/XMILES UK - https://xmiles.co.uk/SHOKZ - Use the Code TEA10 to receive £10 off your order.https://uk.shokz.com?sca_ref=7394994.MfsDQZBAeLQihiPrecision Fuel & Hydration - https://visit.pfandh.com/3GKxHjUPrecision Fuel & Hydration Planner - https://visit.pfandh.com/3RuP25zHarrier Trail Running - https://harrierrunfree.co.uk/Fenixlight Limited - https://www.fenixlight.co.uk/Protein Rebel - https://proteinrebel.com/Beta Run - https://www.betaoutdoorsports.com/The information in our content is provided as an information resource and is not to be used or relied on for diagnostic or treatment purposes. TrailPodder podijaksossa 124 vieraaksemme saapuu jälleen Suomen kärkiultrajuoksija Max Moberg, joka haastoi itsensä Britannian brutaaleimpaan ultrakisaan, Montane Winter Spine Race. Tämä 268 mailin (431 km) pituinen polkujuoksukilpailu kulkee koko Pennine Way -reitin halki Englannin selkärangan Manchesterista Skotlantiin tammikuun talvisissa olosuhteissa.

As we know the leading pack shifted back and forth, but Tiaan was always near the front and in contention for the podium!Tiaan is a super humble guy and a pleasure to interview, I'm sure he will be back in 2026 to have another go at Britain's Most Brutal race!URS

It's time to talk about the Montane Summer Spine Race 2024! Those who attended this year's race will know it looked a lot like a winter one. Conditions were extremely difficult and the athletes who did well this June can quite rightly say they completed a race as tough in its own way as any January edition. Among those brave runners were Chris Cope and Mel Sykes. Chris and Mel arrived at the start line of this year's Summer Spine Race and Summer Spine Challenger South respectively, with a slightly higher mountain to climb than most people around them. Chris has type 1 diabetes which he has managed, to great success, since his teens. Jasmin Paris, mother, clinical academic, small animal vet, teacher, AND ultramarathon runner, joins James Poulos to discuss how she does it all. After being the first woman ever to finish the Barkley Marathons, a 100-mile ultramarathon, she explains how she prepared for the 60-hour race. Paris is the epitome of Olympic spirit without being an Olympic athlete. She talks about the intense training needed for a race that spans multiple days and how she got started running as child. Paris explains how running is a much-needed break from the pressures of society and how she is planning to raise her kids to appreciate nature and the outdoors. Her career as a champion in ultramarathon running, fell running, and sky running led her to winning multiple titles including the Spine Race while also balancing the pressures of being a clinical academic and mother. We are joined by Maggie Mertens, the author of "Better Faster Farther: How Running Changed Everything We Know About Women," which challenges long-held beliefs about women in running. Starting with a powerful reminder from over a century ago, when a woman ran the first modern Olympic marathon without permission, the book reveals how women have faced relentless opposition from the medical establishment, media, and athletic associations. Despite these challenges, they ran barefoot, without sports bras, and sometimes disguised as men, defying quack science and societal norms. Mertens takes us from this boundary-breaking marathon in Greece in 1896 to today's ultra-marathons, like the Spine Race, where women have shattered records. The conversation explores the history of women in running, the progress made, and the lingering stereotypes and inequalities. It highlights the achievements of female athletes, the impact of Title IX, and the need for more research on women's bodies in sports. Overall, it sheds light on the importance of breaking down barriers and empowering women in the world of running. You can preorder the book now or buy it on June 18th when it is released. The Montane Arctic Spine is a non-stop, 293 mile (472 km) foot race along the Kungsleden Trail in Arctic Sweden. This race captures the full self-sufficient, expedition-style feel of the Spine Race as we know it, but transported into the bitter cold of the Arctic. This year's event was the first ever edition of this race which is the first of it's kind. Athletes pull all of their kit behind them on pulks as they carve their way along the trail on backcountry skis, or snowshoes. Conditions were extremely tough with temperatures dipping below -30°c on the first day and not rising above that point throughout the rest of the race. Snow was deep enough in places that our pioneering entrants had to plough their own route through the terrain. After 48hrs of racing only 2 athletes remained. Both went on to put in outstanding performances and both were well deserving recipients of the first-ever Arctic Spine Race finishers medals. Those athletes were Ed Sellon and Kev Leahy who was crowned our winner. in this episode you'll hear about their experiences in the Arctic, and a wealth of tips on how to survive whilst racing in this environment. If you're interested in entering the event in 2025 then click the following link and register your interest today: www.thespinerace.com/race/arctic/arctic-spine In the episode we refer to a playlist of music that Kev was listening too out there in the snow. We chugged some chocolate whole milk to fuel this amazing episode! The main training topic was on why testosterone levels are relevant for all endurance athletes. While individuals have different genetic set-points for testosterone, studies on men and women show that training and fueling interventions can change baseline levels. Those changes can be positive, leading to more energy and better performance... or negative, possibly contributing to fatigue in training and life. We break down the complicated science, along with what athletes can do to optimize their levels safely and legally. And this episode was stuffed with the best discussions! Other topics: a study on caffeine and deception, lower-mileage training that features more cross training, Allie Ostrander's inspiring story of qualifying for Team USA in cross country, Cooper Teare's nose strip, breathing exercises and heart rate variability, a breaking-news study on performance impacts from strategic low-carb approaches, the prevalence of drug use in endurance athletes, our obsession with Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell, Jack Scott's triumph at the Spine Race, and our appreciation of David Goggins. We also have a listener hot take that will change the way you think about hot dogs and hydration. Oscar Meyer is coming for our sports drinks?!
