In this episode of our podcast, I'm chatting with Emma Butler, CEO of Liberare, who shares her journey in developing innovative and accessible bras and underwear that address challenges faced by individuals with MS, arthritis, and other chronic conditions. We'll explore how these adaptive undergarments, featuring front-facing magnetic closures and grip loops, can ease the daily struggle of getting dressed, especially for those with impaired mobility, hand dexterity issues, or experiencing the MS hug. Emma Butler graduated from Brown University in 2020 and founded an adaptive intimates brand, Liberare, at 22 years old to help her mom with chronic pain get dressed easier. Liberare sells bras and underwear for women who are disabled, have arthritis or have recently had surgery, offering easy-on features like front-facing magnet closures on their bras. Butler was named Forbes 30 Under 30 in 2024. Liberare has been featured in Vogue, Good Housekeeping, Oprah Daily and People Magazine.Resources Mentioned In This Episode:Liberare - https://liberare.co/ Additional Resources: https://www.doctorgretchenhawley.com/insider Reach out to Me: hello@doctorgretchenhawley.com Website: www.MSingLink.com Social: ★ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/mswellness ★ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/doctor.gretchen ★ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/doctorgretchenhawley?sub_confirmation=1 → Game Changers Course: https://www.doctorgretchenhawley.com/GameChangersCourse → Total Core Program: https://www.doctorgretchenhawley.com/TotalCoreProgram → The MSing Link: https://www.doctorgretchenhawley.com/TheMSingLink
I'd almost given up on discovering how murder bridge between Biggleswade and Sutton, got it's name. Until completely by accident I stumbled across a ghost story, reported as part of the minutes of a meeting of the Biggleswade Hospital Board in 1922. That led me on a twisty path to the truth, involving a libel case, a notorious Biggleswade spiritualist who believed he was the ghost of Shakespeare's secretary, and two tragic and mysterious deaths. At the heart of this tragic story was the reason why Murder Bridge was given it's name, and who the locals thought the ghost that haunted it might be. Expect seances, Victorian true crime, and some very colourful characters. At the end of this episode there is a trailer for the new and delightfully spooky RUE Papers by Emma Butler. A fascinating conversation with one woman who is looking to revolutionize the adaptive fashion market! Join me as I speak with Emma Butler, founder and CEO of Intimately, a company that sells both functional AND fashionable lingerie and is providing an empowering shopping experience for disabled women along the way. We start by talking about Emma's connection to the chronic illness community, including her perspective as the loved one of someone with a chronic illness and how this served as the inspiration behind her company. We also talk about her introduction to the adaptive wear market and when she became aware of the massive gaps in this area of the fashion industry, particularly in terms of intimates. Emma speaks about the process of starting Intimately and how it went from an idea to a reality. She also educates us on what constitutes adaptive fashion and the features included in their products that make them accessible. We discuss sexiness and desirability, as well as inclusivity and representation. Plus, Emma talks about how she's hoping to evolve the company, including their new line of lingerie!
Meet Emma, recent graduate of Brown University and the founder & CEO of Intimately, a startup that is igniting an inclusive revolution by selling functional and fashionable lingerie for women with disabilities. Emma has been featured in Forbes, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, Entrepreneur, The Boston Globe, and was named one of Forbes next 1000! Listen to Emma share how her 501 hustle developed into a full-time job, as she went from frantically shipping boxes from her college dorm room to raising money from investors, and moving to Station F in Paris. With the help of Brown's Nelson Centre for Entrepreneurship, and a $20,000 Kickstarter campaign, Emma has created a beautiful, branded, one-stop shop for adaptive lingerie that is both functional and fashionable. Intimately serves the dual function of being an e-commerce site specifically targeted towards women with disabilities, and providing a community for them to engage in discussions about intimacy, sex and all things womanhood. The Gen-Z spirit of inclusivity runs through the entire shopping experience-- from easy-to-open shipping boxes, to an all-women team, over half of whom are disabled themselves. Emma would love to meet other Gen Z entrepreneurs, and will soon be hiring, so DM her on IG! @intimately.co
Sam welcomes the impressive young entrepreneur Emma Butler to the show this week. At age 23, Emma is the CEO and Founder of Intimately, a company with the mission to empower and amplify disabled voices and help shape an inclusive future. Emma shares how she got the idea for disability inclusive apparel through watching her mother and friends struggle with intimates that provided an extra challenge for those with a disability. She immersed herself in hard work while at Brown University, and wrote a blog post about the subject that then became a Kickstarter and real world product. Emma talks about how she built her team, scaling the Intimately community, and why we need to rethink fashion technology and funding. Emma is proud to be the leader for a sisterhood of beautiful worthy women to come together and talk on platforms about anything including relationships, beauty, sex, and travel. What You Will Discover This Week: After her mother became chronically ill, Emma started blogging about the best products in adaptive undergarments much due to her noticing the lack of options that were both easy for women to wear and left them with a feeling of confidence. This led to a Kickstarter campaign, and ultimately Intimately was born. Emma is a Brown University graduate, and attributes a lot of her knowledge to immersing herself in education surrounding business and entrepreneurialism. Emma explains what adaptive clothing is, and why it's important for disabled bodied women to feel represented in this apparel sector. Intimately curates pieces that are simple for women who may have issues with dexterity to use, as the usual design of intimate apparel can include a lot of challenging buttons and hooks. Intimately doesn't sacrifice fashion, and believes everyone has the right to feel beautiful and included. Emma shares how she built her team that includes a fantastic group of hardworking able and disabled bodied women. The Intimately community welcomes feedback from its members, and the women are welcome to submit their ideas to designers and watch them come to life. Intimately not only provides a one stop shop of curated pieces, but also is a safe space to be a place for women to develop a sisterhood and discuss everything from sex, relationships, to travel, and their own professional dreams. Emma shares what is next for Intimately, including manufacturing and creating their own textiles. Emma's advice for budding entrepreneurs, and the importance of testing, market research and deep competitive analysis. A common symptom of living with a disability is feeling isolated. Intimately provides a community for women to digitally come together and thrive.
