In this solo minisode, I'm diving into five of the questions I hear most often—covering selective mutism, collaboration, AAC, core words, and the path to dual certification. These are the topics that come up again and again in our field, and today I'm offering practical guidance, real examples, and links to deeper learning.Does ABA Speech have resources for selective mutism?Yes! I share some of my own experience supporting learners with selective mutism and point you to a full episode on the topic with Annie DiVello. And keep an eye out—a CEU on selective mutism is coming in 2026.How do you build collaboration when an SLP pushes back or says “stay in your lane”?I talk through ways to create ongoing communication, get permission to coordinate care, and document collaboration attempts. If the relationship still isn't coming together, involving administration for support can be the next step. How do you make suggestions when a provider uses the same core words with every student and progress feels limited? This can feel like a sensitive conversation. I share how to approach it thoughtfully and recommend our journal article course on core words, along with the linked episode featuring Allison Bean and Bethany Frick Semmler. When is it appropriate to transition away from AAC if a student becomes verbal?I use an example from my own caseload to highlight the importance of individualized goals. The aim isn't always to eliminate the device, but to identify what's functional, meaningful, and supportive for that specific learner. How do you become a dually certified SLP/BCBA?I walk through my own path—starting as an SLP, discovering the power of behavior analysis, completing coursework and supervision, and ultimately passing the exam using the BDS modules.Don't forget to check out ABA Speech for all of your CEU needs—link below! What's Inside:Resources and upcoming CEUs for selective mutismHow to navigate collaboration when communication feels strainedApproaching difficult conversations around core words and progressDetermining when (or if) to transition away from AACThe steps to becoming a dually certified SLP/BCBAMentioned In This Episode:Episode #068: Annie DiVello – Supporting Students With Selective MutismEpisode #121: Core Vocabulary and Typical Language Development with Allison Bean and Bethany Frick Semmler Join the aba speech connection ABA Speech: Home
In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, Hallie chats with Libby Hill, a consultant speech-language pathologist with over 40 years of experience, about the fascinating connection between pathological demand avoidance (PDA) and selective mutism. Libby shares why students with PDA aren't just being “naughty,” how their brilliant yet challenging language profiles can fool us into expecting too much, and why creating the right environment is everything. You'll learn practical strategies like the “projects on pause folder” and why traditional therapy goals need to flip the script to focus on what the team needs to do, not what the student needs to fix. Whether you're hearing about PDA for the first time or looking to deepen your understanding, this episode reminds us that sometimes the best therapy plan is building rapport and following the student's lead.Bullet Points to Discuss: How a rain-soaked TV appearance opened the door to specializing in PDAKey differences between PDA and autism with extreme demand avoidanceThe connection between pathological demand avoidance and selective mutismWhy environment and relationship-building matter more than direct goalsPractical strategies like the “projects on pause folder” and flexible choicesHow to support students without triggering demand avoidanceHere's what we learned: PDA and selective mutism? They're more connected than you think.Getting the environment right beats direct intervention every time.Flexibility and choice look different for every student.Try the “projects on pause folder” - it removes pressure and sparks curiosity.Build rapport without an agenda, and watch progress happen. The right diagnosis matters - wrong strategies can do more harm than good.Learn more about Libby Hill: Website: www.smalltalk-ltd.co.ukFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/smalltalkspeechandlanguagetherapy Let's Talk Small Talk Podcast: https://letstalksmalltalk.transistor.fm Learn more about Hallie Sherman and SLP Elevate:
Children who speak freely at home but shut down in public aren't being stubborn. Their capacity is getting crushed by the demands of new people, new settings, and unpredictable routines. In this episode, we break down how to build capacity using the PRIDE approach—adapted specifically for reluctant speakers and children with selective mutism. You'll hear how to shift out of “thermostat mode” and into “mime mode,” using 10 minutes a day of pure responsiveness to lower pressure, increase connection, and support communication in high-stress seasons like the holidays. We walk through exactly how to use each part of PRIDE—objective encouragement, reflection, imitation, description, and enjoyment—without adding demands, without pushing speech, and without triggering shutdown. This is the blueprint for helping sensitive, cautious, or selectively mute children communicate more confidently when the world gets loud. In this episode, you'll learn: • How the Demands–Capacity Model explains shutdowns in public or group settings • Why holiday routines, unfamiliar people, and novel activities increase mutism • How to adapt each PRIDE element for reluctant speakers (no expansions, no recasts) • What 10 minutes of daily “mime time” does to build capacity fast • The specific social and communication behaviors that improve when capacity increases • How SLPs can coach families through this process during high-stress seasons If you work with children who freeze, whisper, avoid, or stop speaking outside the home, this episode gives you a concrete plan you can use immediately. Want ready-to-use activities that make your therapy educationally rich without adding demands? In this episode, I respond to Erin's question about working with a selectively mute child. I explain that selective mutism isn't a separate diagnosis—it's rooted in paralyzing anxiety. Once we understand that, we can approach it with CCPT through safety, trust, and pacing. I share how progress often begins with small steps like laughter, gestures, or simple sounds, and why those moments signal meaningful movement toward emotional freedom. I also discuss two common missteps: allowing parents in the playroom and directing play. Both undermine the child's autonomy and reinforce anxiety rather than helping the child overcome it. Instead, I outline how to set boundaries gently, sit in the discomfort of waiting, and use reflective language to communicate trust and acceptance. By trusting the process, we give anxious children exactly what they need—time, safety, and the opportunity to heal at their own pace. Don't miss this inspirational episode with Dr. E, a family practice physician with a specialty in pediatric anxiety and depression. Dr. E has four children. Her second child, Sophie, has Selective Mutism, a mental health condition where a person can't talk in certain situations because of fear and anxiety. Dr. E says she knew something was off when Sophie was about 3 1/2 years old. Sophie was super talkative at home, but became a different person when she was out of the house. Advocating for her daughter sent Dr. E on a quest to find Sophie the right help. After several different diagnoses and even accusations of child abuse, Dr. E set out to figure out for herself what Sophie was battling. Through her research and work, Dr. E found the diagnosis of Selective Mutism and founded the Selective Mutism Association (https://www.selectivemutism.org/). Dr. E then created the Social Communication Anxiety Treatment (S-CAT) and the Selective Mutism Anxiety and Related Disorders Treatment Center (Smart Center) (https://selectivemutismcenter.org/), where thousands of people worldwide overcome Selective Mutism. Dr. E emphasizes the importance of parents trusting their guts, and how critical it is to be your child's advocate. Dr. E concludes the episode by talking about the book Sophie wrote called Unspoken Words (https://www.amazon.com/Unspoken-Words-Childs-Selective-Mutism/dp/1467982598) at age 13. Sophie went to college and medical school and is now married and expecting her first child. In kindergarten my daughter would not speak to staff or students at her elementary school. This was very shocking to notice since at home she speaks comfortably. Now we are coming to the end of the first grade school year and her anxiety has impacted her academics & social interactions on an even greater scale. You never know what challenges your child may face as they grow. Super moms do it all! We can and will take on anything we have to for the little ones we love.
Today, Emily Kircher-Morris and Meredith Polsky look into the complexities of selective mutism, exploring its definitions, the importance of language in understanding it, and the personal experiences that led Meredith to specialize in this area. They discuss the myths surrounding selective mutism, and its manifestation as an anxiety disorder rather than a choice or a form of shyness. Meredith shares her journey as a parent of children with selective mutism and the challenges she faced in finding appropriate treatment, ultimately leading her to become a clinician herself. They explore the challenges of diagnosis, and provide effective therapeutic techniques. This is a must-listen for adults supporting children with selective mutism. TAKEAWAYS Selective mutism is often misunderstood as a choice. Language matters in discussing selective mutism. The term 'situational mutism' is gaining popularity. Parents play a crucial role in treatment. Selective mutism is an anxiety disorder, not shyness. Pushing children to speak can increase anxiety. There is a lack of awareness among clinicians about selective mutism. Selective mutism can complicate the diagnosis of autism. Children with selective mutism may not exhibit typical anxiety responses. Effective communication strategies are crucial for children with selective mutism. If you've ever struggled with anxiety, felt unheard, or want to better support someone with selective mutism, this episode with Brittany Krystantos is one you won't want to miss.More info, resources & ways to connect - https://www.tacosfallapart.com/podcast-live-show/podcast-guests/brittany-krystantosBrittany Krystantos joined MommaFoxFire on this episode of Even Tacos Fall Apart to talk about her journey from adversity to advocacy, focusing on her experience with selective mutism. Brittany is a best-selling author, mental health advocate, motivational speaker, and TED Talk presenter. Her work is deeply personal, inspired by her own struggles with anxiety and depression.Brittany explained that selective mutism is an anxiety condition where a person can speak but feels unable to in certain situations. She experienced it from infancy to age seven, making childhood isolating and confusing. While she could whisper to her parents, she often hid behind her mother and avoided speaking to others—even family members. Despite passing every hearing test, her inability to speak in certain situations left her feeling invisible and misunderstood.Teachers and classmates often misjudged her silence, labeling her as shy or different. While she had one close friend she whispered to, she struggled with social interactions, especially compared to her outgoing older sister. Those early feelings of being overlooked still linger in adulthood, making self-advocacy challenging at times.Brittany credits a high school life coach for helping her break free from her silence. Initially resistant to sharing her story, she was encouraged to turn her journal entries into a book. At just 15, she wrote I Am Not Your Average Teen, sharing her experiences with mental health to help others feel less alone. At 18, she faced a major turning point—her first public speaking event. A police officer invited her to talk at a high school assembly, and she nearly backed out due to nerves. But after a pep talk from one of the officers, she pushed through. The speech wasn't perfect, but the impact was undeniable. A student approached her afterward, admitting that Brittany's story had saved her life. That moment solidified her mission to help others through storytelling and advocacy.Brittany believes that mental health education needs to improve, especially for educators. She recalled a first-grade teacher who allowed her to whisper instead of forcing her to speak. More teachers should create safe environments rather than pressuring students who struggle with anxiety. She also highlighted the need for more parental support. Many parents, particularly those from older generations, struggle to understand mental health issues. She encourages parents to educate themselves and create open, judgment-free spaces for their kids. Now a confident speaker, Brittany still gets nervous before events but focuses on her audience instead of her fears. She emphasizes that mental health struggles don't make someone weak—they reveal strength. She wants to erase the stigma around seeking help and reminds everyone that no matter what they're facing, they are not alone. She ended the interview by offering support to anyone who needs it, encouraging people to reach out, whether to friends, professionals, or even directly to her. Brittany's journey proves that even the quietest voices can make the biggest impact.
