Tristan Spurlock is in his third season as the director of player development/assistant coach with the University of Iowa men's basketball program.In his two seasons on staff, Spurlock has helped the Hawkeyes to 38 victories and two postseason appearances (1 NCAA, 1 NIT). He has coached one All-American, a Big Ten Freshman and Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year and 10 All-Big Ten honorees.During the 2023-24 season, Iowa won 19 games, including 10 in Big Ten play, to finish in a tie for sixth in the league standings. This is John McGlothlen with The Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Monday, February 13th.According to the National Weather Service, it will be sunny in the Cedar Rapids area today, with a high near 50. Northwest wind around 5 mph coming from the south in the afternoon. Then tonight, increasing clouds, with a low around 31. Police said two people were killed and a third injured Saturday evening in a crash in southwest Cedar Rapids. The crash happened between a sedan and a pickup truck about 5 p.m. at the intersection of Wiley Boulevard SW and Williams Boulevard SW. Police have not yet released the names of the drivers involved. Two people in the car, an 81-year-old woman and a 75-year-old man, were transported to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead. The driver of the pickup, a man whose age was not provided, was taken to a hospital with what police described as non-life threatening injuries.In Iowa men's basketball, Kris Murray had 28 points, 14 rebounds, three steals and two blocks to help Iowa beat Minnesota 68-56 Sunday and hand the Golden Gophers their eighth consecutive loss. Filip Rebraca added 16 points and eight rebounds for Iowa. The Hawkeyes never trailed against Minnesota.In Iowa women's basketball, Molly Davis scored a season-high 17 points, Caitlin Clark added 15 points and 10 assists, and Iowa handily defeated Rutgers 111-57 on Sunday. Clark, who came into the game second in the nation in scoring and assists, picked up her 13th double-double of the season in just 21 minutes. NFL – Ex-Lions, Liberty linebacker Jessie Lemonier dead at 25 Outside linebacker Jessie Lemonier, who appeared in seven games for the Detroit Lions in 2021 in a brief NFL career highlighted by a sack of Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers, has died. He was 25. The Lions disclosed his death in a statement Thursday, adding they confirmed it with his family. They did not provide any details. Lemonier was signed to the Lions practice squad before the 2022 season, days before being released by the Los Angeles Chargers.
