This week at NSTA: The Bus Stop - Executive Director Curt Macysyn welcomes U.S. House of Representatives member Pete Stauber (R-MN-08). Congressman Stauber shares insights into his remarkable journey from serving as a local elected official and police officer to representing Minnesota's 8th Congressional District—becoming only the second Republican to hold the seat since 1947. He discusses what inspired his decision to run for office, how he works to bridge the partisan divide, and what a typical day looks like as a member of Congress serving on the House Transportation and Infrastructure, Small Business, and Natural Resources Committees, where he also chairs the Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources. The conversation highlights Stauber's address to attendees at the 2025 NSTA Capitol Hill Bus-In and explores his leadership on the Brake for Kids Act (H.R. 2348)—a key legislative initiative aimed at enhancing school transportation safety. Congressman Stauber also shares his passion for hockey, reflecting on his championship days at Lake Superior State, his time with the Detroit Red Wings organization, and his brother Rob's impressive career as a goaltender. The episode wraps up with a fun look at the upcoming NHL season and Stauber's thoughts on the Red Wings and hometown Minnesota Wild. At a roundtable Friday, 8th District Republican Minnesota Congressman Pete Stauber said Congressional Republicans will not cut Medicaid but, rather, work to make sure people are not abusing government help by implementing a work requirement for medical aid. Some state lawmakers want to repeal a ban on seclusions for children in kindergarten through 3rd grade. Seclusions are forced isolations from the classroom. In Minnesota, 100 percent of children who are placed in seclusion have disabilities. Advocates for the repeal say educators need this option as a last resort, but disability rights supporters like DFL Rep. Kim Hicks argue seclusions don't help anyone.“We have to ask ourselves, do we really support people with disabilities and students with disabilities, if we will not stand up for the basic human right to not be locked in a box at six?” she said. The state Department of Education recommends an "urgent end” to seclusion for all children by 2026.Macalester College in St. Paul says it will house international students over the summer, in light of uncertain immigration rules. In an announcement to students and staff this week, college President Suzanne Rivera said the school is worried about students not being able to get back into the country if visa rules change after they leave for the summer. An Awesome Day with Robb Stauber! Hi everyone, this is going to be an awesome day, as my son Rem is sitting in on this episode, and I am pumped to visit with a former teammate of mine from the University of Minnesota – goaltender Robb Stauber. I'm not kidding you when I say he was the most talented goalie I got to play in front of. Maybe I think that because he saved my butt probably hundreds of times after a bad read or when I coughed up the puck for a breakaway. Mr. Stauber was always there for me! By my sophomore year, I'd hardly backcheck when I made a bonehead play, because I knew Robb was there. He's the 1st goalie to ever win the Hobey Baker Award, made it to the top of the hockey mountain as a player with NHL stops in LA and Buffalo, and has pursued equally impressive coaching and entrepreneurial ventures. This is Part One of an incredible hockey journey. I hope you enjoy it! Katia Tenti è nata e vive a Bolzano. Vicki Regan Stauber spent 12 years in Marketing and Business Development roles before earning her MBA at Northwestern University. After years in corporate roles, she turned her attention to a long-held interest in fashion. During her tenure in fashion she founded Sway Jewelry in 2001 and then took on a role as a creative director/buyer at a high-end luxury retailer. Years later, Vicki returned to Northwestern to work in Admissions and special projects at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management. During her time there, she supported the work of Sally Blount in her white paper “Getting More Women into the C-Suite Means Keeping Them in the Talent Pipeline.” The disruption of the pandemic returned her to the ever-present reflection: “What do I love to do? What am I good at? Designing, Styling, Discovering, Curating, and Sharing.” These questions and answers led her back to her love of fashion, this time with a slight name change, Sway Into It.When not designing jewelry, mining fashion sites, hunting for an elusive pair of shoes in her size, or styling & personal shopping, she enjoys Pilates, walks in the Botanic Gardens, art, travel, and visiting her kids - one on the West Coast, one on the East Coast. In this episode, Nada sits down with Vicki to discuss why she returned to her jewelry business, why it took her so long to get into fashion in the first place and what she would do differently in her career. Vicki shares the importance of zigging and zagging and eventually seeing the dots connect to provide a foundation for the work we want to do. Check out swayintoit.com. Ever since the death of George Floyd in May of 2020, policing has been in the spotlight, and there have been calls for the profession to change its practices and policies. But Republicans and Democrats remain far apart on police reform, with conservatives pushing for more police funding while Democrats have advocated for increased officer accountability. The increased scrutiny of law enforcement across the country has had an impact. Last year, police departments across the country reported officers resigning in unprecedented numbers, creating widespread vacancies and recruitment issues that spiraled into a major public safety concern. Before Congressman Pete Stauber (R-MN) was on Capitol Hill, he was a police officer laying his life on the line to protect his community. With a unique perspective as a former law enforcement officer and now legislator, Rep. Stauber recently joined the Rundown's Lisa Brady to discuss the state of his old profession and how best to address America's crime crisis. Due to time limitations, we could not include our entire conversations in the FOX News Rundown segment that ran this week. Before Congressman Pete Stauber (R-MN) was on Capitol Hill, he was a police officer laying his life on the line to protect his community. With a unique perspective as former law enforcement and now legislator, Rep. Stauber joins the Rundown to explain how politics are driving people away from the law enforcement profession, why he has fought to keep qualified immunity in any crime or policing bills, and his optimism that bipartisan crime legislation is possible. But first, President Joe Biden traveled to South Carolina on Thursday to tout his economic accomplishments and further his Bidenomics agenda ahead of the 2024 election. Recent polling shows that President Biden's overall approval rating has steadily declined since April 2021; however, the administration is using the visit to gain traction in the red state, as South Carolina is the first on the 2024 presidential primary calendar. FOX News Sunday anchor Shannon Bream joins the podcast to explain the President's strategy leading up to the election, how former President Trump is using his legal troubles to boost his campaign, and why some are calling for politicians to limit their contact with social media companies. Host Mike Mulcahy talks with Mayor Jacob Frey about Frey's choice for the next Minneapolis police chief. Then, a conversation with State Rep. Jen Schultz, DFL-Duluth. She's an economics professor at the University of Minnesota Duluth and she's challenging U.S. Rep. Pete Stauber, R-Minn., for the 8th District seat in Congress and not running for reelection to the Minnesota House. (We have invited Rep. Stauber on the program, but he has not yet agreed to an interview.) Finally, Mike rounds up this week's political news stories with MPR News's Dana Ferguson and Brian Bakst and Minnpost's Peter Callaghan.
