Join me for a 4 hour gravel ride with aerobars on a singlespeed in Texas! Show Notes: History of and how to best enjoy one of these "ride along" shows. Assioma power pedals How gravel tires open up more paved but sketchy connector roads Sharrows! Reading off power and cadence while climbing. Dropping into Lick Creek Park with heavy gravel Garmin Forerunner 970 killer features review Ribbon Snakes and Green Snakes Thank you Lachlan Morton for making pink jerseys cool. Coasting more on longer rides will actually make you go faster in the end. How ranchers turn flatbed railroad cars into small bridges. Riding upright when super hot might overall be faster than low and aero due to the cooling. Rock Bros arm coolers are interesting - solid on one side and mesh on the other. For sun block / cooling. Fueling trick - clear bottles so you can see how much you've used to help stay on track. Meshy stuff WAY better in hot conditions. Dramatic cooling effect compared to classic cycling kit. Garmin 970 added rucking, sapphire glass, flashlight, speaker and microphone, but no voice notes... Fenix is overkill for most people, and that adds weight and makes it a poor running watch. Front-facing collision warning radar would be cool device since you can hit a car with your head down. Story how I was friends with the inventor of Morf-tech bars and he died from a crash like that. Interesting nuance of singlespeeding - sometimes faster on long rides by capping effort on flats and downhills? "Unhurried" vs. "Slow Living". Difference is intention and middle pathing. Getting water from country gas station. Cool soundscape. Surrounded by Roadies. Drifting in gravel turns is FUN. Uhurried more like Taoism "Flow" than Slow Living is. Miniature compass on handlebars end up being better than I thought! Use to better work with wind and navigation, no batteries. How I'm using my Garmin 945 watch to send HR to my bike computer. Pausing to do things right when being unhurried instead of putting things off for later because you are in a rush. Trimming workouts down in time if tired instead of just going easier. Set an end time for your workouts - more important than a start time. You want to be extremely relaxed in aero position. Why flat terrain wears you out more than rolling. Singlespeed flatbar gravel bike is oddly like 80s BMX bikes. The truth about drinking from the hose and not being let in the house. How we get rolling hills with steep gully walls. How to "row" your bike up steep hills. Trick to keep your water bladder in the freezer to stop mold and also have ice water on your hot rides. More on "time capping" to give you more free time. The coolest thing about gravel isn't the gravel, it's the lack of cars. Rear radar apps on your phone will play the alerts through your headphones too. Get the swimming version of Shokz headphones if you want them to be truly sweatproof. Signs of nerve damage in feet. How I got the nickname "Cool Breeze". Cooling down under a freeway bridge. 91 degrees in the shade. Using cold soda to cool down faster from the inside out. Fueling 300 calories per hour using table sugar and a little bit of Gatorade powder and sodium citrate. Zen story of being unhurried to become enlightened. Hitting singletrack and pipeline road. Signs you're trying to do too much. The "shoot first, point later" concept of videoing your rides with an Insta360 camera. Ep. 201 ~ Cjell Moné, AZT 800 World Record!

Bikes or Death Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 7, 2025 173:17

Cjell Moné just did the unthinkable by riding his custom Moné La Roca with coaster brakes on the Arizona Trail 800. The AZT 800, which is actually 840 miles, traverses the length of Arizona from the USA/Mexico border to the border of Utah. It's infamous for being one of the most challenging bikepacking routes in the world. Riders will face extreme temperatures, brutal desert terrain, long stretches without resupply, all on a trail that was designed for hikers, not cyclists. While the route is riddled with challenges it is equally beautiful and awe-inspiring, which only adds to it's mystique and it's growing popularity among those with a sense of adventure and maybe a slight penchant for abuse. For the uninitiated a Coaster Brake bike is like the one you probably road as a kid. When you pedal backwards it engages the rear brake. And that's it. No hydraulic disc brakes to control your speed to keep you from flying off the trail and into the abyss. Coaster bikes can only work on Singlespeed bikes, so on top of taking on the AZT 800 with a coaster bike, he was also only had one gear. Crazy? Maybe. Wild? Yes! But if you know Cjell Moné you wouldn't be even a little bit surprised. Cjell is known for his style, flair, and fondness for individuality. Which is represented in everything he does, from how he rides his bike to the bikes he builds at his custom bike factory (which is a truthfully a 1990 Wonderbread Truck). I'm stoked to bring you my latest chat with Eric House fresh off his finish at the Atlas Mountain Race in Morocco. After being laid off from his job in September he decided to go full send on bikepacking and has an epic 2025 planned. Probably most notably, he'll be doing all three of the Nelson Tree's Mountain Race series on a singlespeed. Something no ones ever done before! He's got a lot more on his plate for 2025 as he tries to pack in as many adventures on his bike as he can during this time of unemployment. We go over all his plans for this year on today's episode. We also have a healthy does of fun tangents and a brief period where we both take off our pants, a Death or Death first haha! Most importantly, we hear about his experience at AMR this year and what a successful year will look like to him. Eric and I met up in the Sam Houston National Forest which was the perfect backdrop to an awesome chat. He's one of the nicest, most down to earth humans I've met and he's pretty damn good at riding bikes too. All of which contribute to a helluva good chat. Eric's able to do all of this in part to support from his sponsors, who he'd like to personally thank: - Old Man Mountain - South City Stichworks - K-Lite - Doom Bars - Race Ready Repair EPISODE SPONSORS  Old Man Mountain – Use code “mountainordeath” at checkout to receive 10% off your order! While you were sipping egg nog and opening the presents that Santa Claus brought you, Matt Annabel was starting his AZT 300 Yo-Yo attempt.  And while you were watching the ball drop or lighting fireworks to ring in the New Year, Matt was still out riding the AZT 300 Yo-Yo.  I can't think of a more epic way to close out one year and ring in a new one than riding your damn bike on one of the most beautiful and challenging routes in bikepacking, the Arizona Trail 300.  In true legend fashion, and in true Matt Annabel fashion, he did it on a singlespeed!   Matt's ride was not an official time as he didn't stay on the official race course and he also stayed with a friend in Tucson, but that was never Matt's goal.  He had other goals and intentions behind this ride that are just as valid as an official ITT, at least in my opinion.   On today's episode Matt shares with us how this trip came together at the last minute, with literally zero training or planning, his personal reasons for being out there, and some really insightful background on some of the AZT trail history.  He also reveals some big plans that he has on his bike for this year! Matt is a true wordsmith, who provided daily recaps during his ride.  I strongly recommend you checking those out on his social media page for more context and perspective to this conversation.  I also recommend you read, for a good laugh, his account of the Drive-by Dildo that impacted Indy Shultzs' face during the 2023 AZTR.  He also has created and published a route called Rolling Horse in Colorado that sounds truly special.   EPISODE SPONSORS  Old Man Mountain - Introduced their Experimental Bikepacking Team on today's episode. "Pay Nothing. Give Everything" is the moto of the Limestone 77.7 State of Iowa Single Speed Gravel Championship Race held on Oct. 5 of 2024. The race is promoted by CK (Chris Kyle) and is almost as grass roots as you get - except for the details - CK and friends cover the cost of the event - numbers, insurance, food and water at the aid stops and prizes- and as such, he charges zero to enter. Two courses are offered - a 37.5-mile fun ride (no scoring) and the championship 77.7-mile distance. At a moment of weakness I signed up for the championship event, and spent the summer training for it (a very hilly, long gravel race on a singlespeed bike) on my light, snappy, quick road bike on mostly 35- to 50-mile spirited group rides. If all this sounds like a recipe for success, tune in to find out! In my nervousness, I decided to bring my portable microphone along and record the day as it went along - and this is the result. A note on music - Mt. Joy's Jesus Drives an Astrovan played me into the event and stuck in my head throughout the day - so it was only proper to send you out of this episode with their 2021 version recorded live at Red Rocks - I hope you enjoy and subscribe to all their stuff on Spotify and Apple etc. then go see em in concert. I want to celebrate the great B-Movie actor Tom Atkins, and I'm pairing it with River to River German Pilsner, provided by my friends at @singlespeedbrewingco. Tom has had a singularly wonderful career, and had been a big part of my movie viewing life, from The Fog, to Creepshow, Escape From New York, and all time classic Night of the Creeps. And that's just a small slice of his great career. He grew up in the blue collar world of Pittsburgh, PA, the son of a steel worker, and I thought it made sense to pair this one with a solid Pilsner from my blue collar home state. Frank and Jacque answer a listener question about should they replace a pump motor or spend the extra money and install a new Jandy variable speed pump. Poolwerx.com ipssa.com using calculator https://www.jandy.com/en/pool-pump-savings *error stated- Frank stated the $1300 savings for an 8 hour run time on the pump saves $1300 per year, I should have said about $1000 per year. The $1300 savings is if the single speed runs 10 hours per day* 00:00 introduction, Jacque's Birthday! Going to Croatia 07:37 Listener Question: My 2 1/2 hp pump motor is going out. It is making a really loud squeal. This particularly sucks because we are trying to cool the pool by running the pump at night and turning on the valve to the waterfalls, and the pool pump is by my daughters bedroom window. So now she is sleeping with us. The pool is cooler, but her sleeping with us is not cool. Please explain how the $1600 difference between a new motor or new 2.7 horsepower variable speed pump can possibly be worth it. 10:50 many large pumps are oversized for the plumbing. you may be able to downsize the pump to begin with. We find many pumps are too large for the plumbing and should be downsized. 12:10 Jacque asks what is the difference between the pump and motor. Frank explains that motors drive pumps, and can be replaced without replacing the pump, but it is not always the best choice. 13:40 break 14:30 assuming 20 cents per KW, 2.5 uprated motor, and 20K gallon pool, traditional chlorine, proper hydraulics. If hydraulics are not correct the single speed pump will cost even more electricity than what the on line calculator shows. 17:00 estimate a 2.5 hp single speed pump moves about 94 gallons per minute. in 8 hours the pump will move 5628 gallons per hour. In 8 hours this will accomplish 2.25 turnovers per day. We recommend a minimum of 2 turnovers per day. at a cost of $3.71 per day, $110 to $115 per month If he installs a Jandy 2.7hp variable speed it will move about 1/2 the water per hour, but 2.28 turnovers in 16 hours, at a cost of $1.05 per day for about $31.50 per month. that is about $80 per month savings. About $1000 savings per year. (screwed up the total math on the show, but still significant) 21:00 variable speed pumps are typically much more quiet than traditional single speed pumps. The extra flow is available if needed for spas and waterfalls if needed. Running longer and slower filter cycles is usually much more beneficial than shorter higher flow cycles. Saltwater chlorine generation systems can also be much more effective with longer filter cycles. (This also applies to ozone, UV, and AOP systems)

Since then Lindsay has been one of the most inspiring and most influential members of the bikepacking community that I've had the opportunity to follow and become friends with.Lindsay is no stranger to hard things. She's been adventuring on her bike since 2014, having completed the Tour Divide, the French Divide, and the American Trail Race. Most recently Lindsay set sail on what we'll call the Arkansaw Singlespeed Yo-Yo Extravaganza which consisted of Ozark Gravel DOOM, the Quachita Triple Crown, and the Arkansaw High Country Race. A 'Yo-Yo' is when a rider or racer completes the course in one direction and then turns around to finish the course in the opposite direction. Altogether, Lindsay racked up an estimated 3,200 miles and 280,000 feet of elevation gain before it was all said and done.During our conversation, Lindsay and I touch on how she was introduced to riding a bike, her entrance into ultra-distance bikepacking, why she chooses to tackle such difficult events, and what she discovers about herself in the process.

This week Clint and Dawson sit down with Jason Vance. Jason has been riding bicycles for 40 years. He began racing in the late 90's while at Oregon, focusing on track cycling. After moving to Nevada to pursue graduate studies, He was introduced to MTB'ing by a colleague and would eventually abandon all skinny-tired aspirations. An academic position would bring him to Charleston SC; after navigating the hurdles of tenure (and addressing his neglected health), He fell in love with the rugged trails in Pisgah Forest. Through chance encounters, he stumbled upon the southeast ultra-endurance community in 2018, via Eric Wever's Pisgah 36, Kim Jordan Murrell's Dirty 130, and Karlos Rodriguez Bernart's Cross Florida ITT. He soon found himself craving long miles across the beautiful forest roads and trails of western NC, Tennessee, Florida and Georgia -and any chance he is forced to take a 30 minute nap in the dirt. Currently, he is first to ride all of the ITT's in the Cherokee forest in 3 days. First to do all three on an single speed. First to do the Mountain 430 in the opposite direction. And the first to do the Dirty 130 in the opposite direction. Thanks for listening! Find all our episodes at dayfirepodcast.com This podcast is powered by ZenCast.fm

In this episode, the boys talk to Dave and Austin from SingleSpeed. They all chat about UNIFY the Iowa Brewers Guild collaborative beer.  This popular brewing project began with its first release in 2021 and annually supports the mission of IBG. UNIFY comes from a collaborative recipe and is brewed with choice ingredients. A collaborative recipe and choice ingredients give this lush brew a pillowy feel with hints of passionfruit. Each purchase of UNIFY will directly benefit the mission of the Iowa Brewers Guild. Unify is Born and Brewed in Iowa with Iowa craft beer lovers in mind. “Craft brewing is all about community,” said IBG Executive Director Noreen Otto, “and with this release, we want Iowans to embrace our call to ‘Drink Beer and Make Friends'.”. UNIFY's creation and release are supported by the generosity of IBG members and industry suppliers including design by 818-a tiny design empire, hops suppliers Hollingbery & Son, Inc. and Hopsteiner; labeling partner Strategic Print Solutions; yeast from Omega Yeast; malt from Briess brewing expertise by Singlespeed Brewing; and distribution support from Confluence Brewing Company. Find UNIFY Hazy IPA starting May 1st , on retail shelves across Iowa or at Iowa Brewers Guild member breweries including: Singlespeed Brewing, Confluence Brewing Company, Alluvial Brewing, Backpocket Brewing, Big Grove Brewing, Barn Town Brewing, Big Rack Brew Haus, BIT Brewing, Blind Butcher Brewing, Bremer Brewing Co., Brightside Aleworks, Clockhouse Brewing, Convergence Ciderworks, Dimensional Brewing, Fenders Brewery, Fenceline Brewing, Firetrucker Brewery, Jackson Street Brewing, Lua Brewing, Maquoketa Brewing, Peace Tree Brewing, Second State Brewing, Textile Brewing, Tractorlift Brewing, Uptown Garage, West O Beer, West Hill Brewing Company, Wise-I Brewing. Sparkling streams, hills and hollows, shady rivers, mountain views, waterfalls, swimming holes, historic sites, bustling cities – the Arkansas High Country Route has it all. According to local route designer Chuck Campbell, “That route don't go no where — It just runs around everywhere!” Indeed, this route is designed to connect many of the interesting places in west-central and northwest Arkansas. We connected with Race Director Andrew Onermaa to talk about the AHCR and what it takes to complete the 1000-mile, 450-mile and 187-mile back country bike packing routes. We also talk about the scholarship program to help people defray the cost of registering for the race - thanks to a legacy gift left by a bike packing enthusiast named Daniel Collins. Thanks to Andrew for taking the time to talk with me and tell us all about the Arkansas High Country Race - be sure to follow them on instagram and facebook at arhighcountryrace and check out all the details online at arkansashighcountry.com - and if you want to apply for an entry fee scholarship send your request directly to Andrew at race@arkansashighcountry.com. Single Speed USA is more about mountain biking with friends, new and old, having fun and enjoying some local brews than it is about going fast on high tech 11-speed full suspension race bikes. Held in a different location each year, locations earned by competing in some crazy cooked up contest, this year it migrated to Deborah, Iowa, a small college town in north east Iowa surrounded by limestone bluffs, trout streams and challenging mountain bike trails. I brought my mic and camera (and a full suspension, fully geared bike… quite the opposite of everyone else there, except for at least one guy, whom you'll meet) and started recording. My goal? Take you to Deborah to enjoy the atmosphere, trails and meet some of the crazy folks who came from as far as Arizona and New England to laugh, have some beers and push their single speeds to the top of Van Peenen Bluff. There is some cussing here and there, as you might expect. It is a fully Single Speed Crowd.

Thanks to Jesse Reyerson (Spinner), who organized the event this year, for kindly welcoming me into the SSUSA Posse. To find out where and when the 2023 event is, follow Single Speed USA (SSUSA) on Instagram and Facebook.

Check them out … trust me.All you need to know about Sarah as a cyclist is captured  in a Bicycling Magazine article titled "These 12 Badass American Women Are Crushing Cycling Right Now". In it she was described this way: “If you're ever looking for an all-around cyclist, look no further than ultimate badass Sarah Sturm. She has raced criteriums, singlespeed cyclocross, mountain bikes and gravel grinders—most notably the Belgian Waffle Ride in California in 2019, which she won in a stacked field of pro women. After that, she jumped into the pro women's criterium at the Sea Otter Classic and took the win… also on her gravel bike. The same season, she was second in the Leadville 100 mountain bike race.”In the course of the episode we discussed creativity, changes, the zen of single speed, the benefit of doing things you suck at, the human need for challenge and so, so much more. If you don't know who my guest is before, after this you will definitely become a fan.Magnetic, fun, authentic, and thoughtful, Episode 13: Sarah Sturm ... I think you'll LOVE it!(Side Note: My smallest human made an appearance at the end. Also, you may hear a slight echo of my voice ... so not pro ... but that's fine)Thanks so much for taking some time out of your life today and I hope you had as good of a time as I did with this one. Sharing stories of faceplants, McD's post race stops, costumes and start line dance parties, Sarah Sturm and Emily Schaldach take us into the details of their singlespeed cyclocross battles from 2019. In the process, they shed some light on what drives them to race and how they deal with the nerves of racing and balancing the results and the fun.  Both Emily and Sarah honed their cycling craft in Durango, CO amidst the beautiful trails and amazing athletes found there. They talk about collegiate cycling, singlespeed racing and the dichotomy of racing big races to win, while in the midst of a gigantic party.  They also share who their role models and mentors have been in the sport and reassure us that its ok to be serious about your sport, but not take your racing too seriously.  Give a listen to two women who exemplify what cyclocross is in the States and are bad ass role models for every aspiring or veteran racer.
