UConn pulled off a hard-fought 78-74 victory against Butler, showcasing their resilience in the face of a tough road environment and a desperate opponent. The Huskies shot an impressive 46% from three-point range, compared to Butler's 33%, which is significant considering Butler is a team that heavily relies on its three-point shooting to generate offense. This stark shooting contrast brought to mind the Purdue defense from last season's title game against Zach Edey—where allowing tough twos and limiting threes became a bulletproof strategy. UConn's ability to force Butler into less efficient shots while hitting big ones on their end proved to be the difference. However, this wasn't without challenges. The whistle didn't favor UConn, with a 20-to-10 foul disparity at one point, largely benefiting a desperate Butler team on a four-game losing streak. Late whistles evened it out to 20-13 by the end, but many of those felt like make-up calls. Despite the adversity, the Huskies stuck to their game plan, limiting Butler's perimeter shooting and finding ways to execute offensively. Fran McCaffery was the guest on Wednesday's Hawk Fanatic/KCJJ radio show and podcast, and like always, he was a great interview. He addressed multiple topics, including the recent decision by his son, Patrick McCaffery, to transfer to Butler, and his future from a coaching standpoint. Fran McCaffery is Iowa's all-time winningest men's basketball coach, and he just completed his 14th season as head coach, which is the longest tenure in program history. The transfer portal is getting active in Iowa City, so we had to hop on and do a podcast to discuss the latest news, which was Patrick McCaffery entering the NCAA Portal on Wednesday. It's a jam packed Sweet 16 edition of the Hawkeye Report Podcast. Exposure to the smoke from burn pits — the large open-air fires the military has used to dispose of waste — harmed veterans such as Juan Serrano, Patrick McCaffery and Robert Auletta, who work with Northwell Health's Military Liaison Services. Of the more than 10K U.S. veterans who have already been diagnosed with burn pit damage to their airways, the picture is grim and the reaction, most often, is shock. Conditions range from asthma and COPD, to sleep apnea, to a long list of cancers. On this episode, Juan Patrick and Robert talk about their experience and efforts in addressing burn pit exposure. They're joined by Anthony Szema, MD, a pulmonologist and leading expert on burn pits; Dr. Szema is director of Northwell's International Center of Excellence in Deployment Health and Medical Geosciences. He has launched a clinical trial that monitors the health of veterans with burn pit exposure. (Many of the veterans on Juan's team have already signed up.) Explaining his goals for the trial, Dr. Szema also provides an update on the PACT Act, new legislation he played a key role in getting passed; it expands VA benefits to care for veterans with burn pit exposure. To further assist veterans, Juan, Dr. Szema and staff at the Military Liaison Office are helping service members sign up for the PACT Act. Wind chill values as low as -15. Winds from the northwest around 10 mph. Then tonight, partly cloudy, with a low around -9. Wind chill values, again, as low as -15.For its 50th year this summer, RAGBRAI will head back to Coralville as one of its overnight stops on the 500-mile ride. Since a pair of newspapermen challenged each other to ride their bikes across the state in 1973, what has evolved into the internationally-known Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa has included Johnson County among its overnight stops on eight occasions. But Coralville officials felt especially compelled to bid for a featured role in this year's July 22-29 route — given the 50th year of RAGBRAI aligns with a meaningful occasion for the city: its 150th anniversary. The city got its wish Saturday when RAGBRAI announced its 2023 route will weave through Coralville on July 28 — marking the city's sixth time as an overnight host. The full RAGBRAI route will start July 22 along the Missouri River in Sioux City and make overnight stops in Storm Lake, Carroll, Ames, Des Moines, Tama-Toledo, and Coralville. The route's final day will take riders to Davenport and its banks of the Mississippi River on July 29 — the same place the first cross-state expedition wrapped five decades ago.Two dogs were killed in a Cedar Rapids house fire Saturday and a cat was rescued, according to the Cedar Rapids Fire Department. At 9:31 a.m., fire crews were dispatched to the 1600 block of A Avenue NW for a report of smoke and flames at a one-story house. Firefighters forced entry into the home, found the fire in a kitchen area and extinguished the fire. No people were found in the home at the time of the fire but two dogs were killed. A cat was rescued from the home, according to the news release.In Iowa men's basketball, Kris Murray scored 24 points, Ahron Ulis added 16 and Iowa defeated Rutgers 93-82 on Sunday. The Hawkeyes, boasting the conference's top offense for five years running and averaging 80.7 points per game this season, became the first team to score 80 points on the Scarlet Knights this season. Rutgers entered with the Big Ten's stingiest defense, yielding 58.1 points to its opponents. Murray sank 8 of 16 shots with a 3-pointer and made 7 of 9 free throws for Iowa. He added six rebounds. Ulis made 5 of 9 shots with two 3-pointers. Tony Perkins totaled 11 points and seven rebounds, while Connor McCaffery scored 11 and handed out six assists. Patrick McCaffery, playing for the first time since Jan. 1, came off the bench to score nine on 3-of-3 shooting from beyond the arc.–

According to the National Weather Service there will be a 50 percent chance of snow showers Wednesday, mainly after 8 a.m. When not snowing it will be cloudy, with a high near 35 degrees. Up to a half inch of snow accumulation is possible. There will be a slight chance of snow Wednesday night, with a low around 27 degrees.Cedar Rapids police are investigating a fatal stabbing that left one woman dead Monday night. It is the city's first homicide of the year.Joint Communications Agency Dispatchers received a call at 6:44 p.m. Monday regarding a stabbing in the 2100 block of North Towne Ct. NE, according to a news release. When officers arrived on the scene, they reported discovering an adult female suffering from a stab wound.Devonna Walker, 29, was treated at the scene and transported to a hospital, authorities said. She died from her wound.Authorities said two individuals were detained, transported to the Cedar Rapids Police Department and interviewed. Both individuals were released pending further investigation after consultation with the Linn County Attorney's Office.The investigation is ongoing.Iowa men's basketball junior forward Patrick McCaffery announced Tuesday he is taking an indefinite leave of absence to address anxiety.“I have been battling anxiety for a while,” he said in a statement, “and recently it has peaked, which has inhibited my preparation and performance on the court.”McCaffery's father and head coach, Fran McCaffery, said “Patrick is one of the millions of people who battle through anxiety on a daily basis. It has become more noticeable on and off the court over the past couple weeks.“Patrick has the full support of his family, coaches, teammates, and administration as he fights through this. All of us admire his courage and willingness to be open about this struggle and we hope others know that they are not alone. We will be with him every step of the way.”Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird signed on to lawsuits challenging President Joe Biden's administration and Democratic-backed laws during her first day in office Tuesday.Bird, a Republican who took over the office after defeating Democrat Tom Miller in the November election, made challenging the Biden administration in court a central plank of her campaign, along with her assertion she would "back the blue" and support law enforcement.Bird signed onto a challenge led by Nebraska to Biden's student debt forgiveness plan, as well as lawsuits challenging vaccine mandates and challenging a provision of the American Rescue Plan Act that prevented states from using federal funds to cut state taxes.Iowa had already been a party to the lawsuits Bird signed onto, her office said in a news release, but Miller had not attached his name to them.Bird also appeared to represent Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds in her appeal to the Iowa Supreme Court seeking to reinstate Iowa's so-called "fetal heartbeat" law, which would make abortion illegal except in the earliest weeks of pregnancy.

The men's Iowa basketball team finished strong yesterday in a home victory over Minnesota. With Fran McCaffery at home due to Covid, Billy Taylor took the reigns of the Iowa Hawkeye squad and got the job done with impressive performances from Keagan Murray and Patrick McCaffery along with a fantastic defensive effort by the Hawks in the second half.On the women's side, despite falling short on the road to a top-10 ranked Michigan team, the Iowa women's basketball team showed a lot of courage and heart clawing their way back from 25 points down at one point. This is John McGlothlen with The Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Monday, Jan. 24th. According to the National Weather Service, we have a 30 percent chance of snow, mainly before 10 a.m. It will be cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with the temperature rising to near 28 by 11 a.m., then falling to around 16 during the remainder of the day. Winds from the southwest 5 to 15 mph then from the north in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph. Tonight, mostly clear, with a low around -7. Wind chill values as low as -20. A Marion nursing home has been cited for more than two dozen health care violations and is accused of being so short-staffed the residents have not received food or medicine as scheduled, according to a report by the Iowa Capital Dispatch. One resident of the Silver Oak Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Marion died at the home after a fall last Thanksgiving. The alleged physical abuse of another resident wasn't reported to the state as required by law, and some temporary employees have reportedly arrived for work and immediately walked out after seeing how short-staffed the facility was. The facility has been cited for 25 separate federal regulatory violations. It is now facing a state fine of $12,500, which could be cut to $8,125 if the owners agree to forgo an appeal. Until last year, when the home was sold, it was known as Willow Gardens Care Center and had operated for three years with no fines or citations. Last May, the facility was bought by Ivy Healthcare Group, which is based in Surfside, Fla. Iowa defeated Penn State in men's basketball Saturday afternoon at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, 68-51. The Hawkeyes evened their Big Ten record at 4-4 and improved their overall mark to 14-5. Keegan Murray led Iowa with 15 points. Kris Murray had 13, Patrick McCaffery and Jordan Bohannon 11.
