John Wooden once said "Make friendship a fine art." If that is the case then Rex Sharp is Michelangelo. It has never been about where he has been or the athletic training facilities he has designed while at those schools, or the committees he has lead or been on, or the Hall of Fames that he is currently in. It has been about the people he has come in contact with over his 45 year career as an athletic trainer and how he can help them. That career started as a student athletic trainer at New Albany High School, New Albany, IN under NATA HOF member Jerry Bell and Don Ogle. Then in 1975 Rex made the trip to Muncie, IN to attend Ball State University. While at Ball State he won the National Athletic Trainers' Association Robert H. Gunn Scholarship for the nation's outstanding student athletic trainer in 1978. After graduation from Ball State he took a teaching job/athletic trainer at his high school alma mater in New Albany. After two years he decided attend graduate school. His uncle Randy Owsley was the head athletic trainer at Michigan Tech, a NCAA division II school in Houghton, MI. Rex decided to take the offer from Randy and spend 2 years in the upper peninsula getting his master's degree and ton of experience on his own. Next he was on to at the time was Northeast Missouri State, now Truman State. He was the first athletic trainer there and grew the program into a new athletic training facility and two GA athletic trainers. Then a phone call from Jim Dickerson changed the trajectory of his career. Ball State needed a Head Athletic Trainer and they were calling on Rex to lead the program back to prominence. Rex spent 11 years at Ball State and arguably some of the most successful years of the athletic training program. From new facilities, faculty, and athletic training students that have gone on to lead the profession. In 1996 Rex left Ball State for the University of Missouri. He spent 25 years at MIZZOU and again impacted the development of new athletic training facilities, team physician coverage, increasing athletic training staff, and started an integrated health care team to provide mental health support to MIZZOU athletes. One of the first in the country. Finally the establishment of an Undergraduate Athletic Training Education Program. In his time at MIZZOU he was on many prestigious safe guard and advisory committees for student-athlete health. Rex and his staff were recognized as the Athletic Training Staff of the year in 2000 and 2011 for the Big 12 Conference. He retired from MIZZOU in 2020. In 2021 he accepted the Director of Sports Medicine position at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, FL Rex was inducted into the Cardinal Sports Medicine Society Ring of Honor in 2005, The Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. The Missouri Athletic Trainers' Hall of Fame in 2018. And the New Albany High School Hall of Fame in 2018. He currently resides in Daytona Beach, FL with his wife Eileen. They are the parents of three adult children, daughter Audrey and twins Adam and Jared.

It doesn't really matter whether you're a really large company or really small company, you have to continue to find, keep and grow the value of customers, which is the essence of marketing. You can't stop looking for customers and doing that work, but you also have to focus on keeping them. In this episode, Laura Patterson, President of VisionEdge Marketing gives suggestions for smaller to mid-size companies about building an advisory panel from your customers and why that continues to build loyalty, resources for valuable information, and your ability to better serve all of your customers. This fits into the topic of budgets and getting away from a line-items from the past, compared to outcome-based recommendations to nimbly move forward. You will pick up several tips you can implement at your own company - no matter the size - in this episode, "Outcome-Based Budgets vs. Line Item Belt Tightening."   ----more---- About Laura Patterson: Growth strategy consultant to business leaders. Guest: Amy Eagan, Drury University Head Coach Drury University head coach Amy Eagan joins the Basketball Podcast to discuss how to make your opponent adjust to you. Amy Eagan will enter her second season as the Drury Lady Panthers head coach in 2021-22 and her 13th year as a collegiate head coach. Eagan was named head coach at Drury on April 13, 2020, after serving as an assistant coach for the Lady Panthers in 2019-20. While Eagan inherited a team that had gone 32-0 the year before, the squad graduated two All-Americans including the two-time NCAA-II Player of the Year, Hailey Diestelkamp. She followed that season, working the challenges of a season clouded by the uncertainty of a global pandemic, with an NCAA-II Runner Up finish for the second time in program history. The won their fifth-straight Great Lakes Valley Conference championship, and finished 24-2. The team produced the NCAA-II Player of the Year for a third straight season as junior Paige Robinson was voted as the nation's top player, and Eagan was named the national Coach of the Year in D-II by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. The Lady Panthers also produced seven Academic All-GLVC performers, and won a GLVC Team Academic Award. Paige Robinson was named a CoSIDA Academic All-American, and was named the GLVC Student-Athlete of the Year in women's basketball. She will enter this season with a career record of 211-144 (.594). Eagan has been the head coach of teams that have reached three NCAA-II tournaments, one NAIA tournament, and have won three conference championships (two GLVC titles, 2021 with Drury, 2014 with Truman St., and a Midwest Classic title at St. Ambrose in 2007). Eagan came to Drury after a successful tenure as the head coach at Truman State. In six seasons with the Bulldogs, she became the program's all-time leader in career coaching wins and winning percentage posting a mark of 111-62 (.642). Short Time Wrestling Podcast

Oh, it’s about that time, it’s about that time, it’s ABOUT THAT TIME! The whistles of college wrestling season didn’t actually blow for the first time on Thursday night, they actually started in September with the California Community Colleges. But the four-year programs and the rest of the junior colleges got underway this week and this is your daily dose of the wrestling scores and more, that’s right, it’s Short Time Shots, the coffee you need for your morning wrestling commute, I’m your host Jason Bryant. Yes, I’m stunned I still have a voice after Budapest. The first Division I dual of the season saw the Chris Bono regime in Madison start with a victory. The 18th-ranked Wisconsin Badgers won four of the last five bouts to pull away from a scrappy Buffalo team 25-12. Connor Brown opened up the dual with a fall, Ben Askren-style, who was actually calling the action live on Flowrestling. Buffalo’s Bryan Lantry scored a solid win at 141-pounds over transfer Tristan Moran, while All-American Evan Wick started the Badger roll with a 14-1 major decision at 165 pounds. Ryan Christensen, Mason Reinhardt and Trent Hillger finished things off down the stretch for Chris Bono’s new squad. In another geographical indicator that college athletic conferences are still bonkers, West Virginia topped Northern Colorado 22-14 in the Big 12 Conference and season opener for both teams. Tim Flynn’s new team fell behind early, but four straight wins saw the Mountaineers rally for the win, thanks to victories by Matthew Schmitt at 133, Joe Wheeling - which is fitting he wrestles for West Virginia - at 141, Christian Monserrat at 149 and Zach Moore at 157. Moore’s locked up the dual win. And out in California, Manny Rivera and his CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners did some wacky stuff, doing a tri-meet on two mats with three rounds each as San Francisco State and Life Pacific went round-robin in a way that is well, interesting. Life Pacific is a brand-new NAIA program in Southern California while San Francisco State is led by second-year head coach and California native Jason Welch. The Gators have a pretty solid coaching staff too there with Ryan Loder, Dom Kastl and Orry Elor. Runners won big, by the way, topping San Francisco State 38-3 and Life Pacific 38-6. San Francisco State beat Life Pacific 39-6. Let’s go back to the whole “new era thing,” shall we? And we’re not talking Boston Red Sox World Series hats here either, Doug Schwab. The Brett Hamm era opened up in a big way as Cornell College trounced Simpson College 51-0 in a battle of two Iowa Division III programs. As you may know, Mike Duroe, the former Cornell College head coach, lost his battle with brain cancer earlier this year. Sixth-ranked Upper Iowa picked up five forfeits and beat undermanned Truman State 56-0. We’re going to give Truman State a bit of a pass here since coach David Schutter and the program raised enough money to keep the program afloat this year after the school announced it was going to drop the sport. Bulldog faithful raised over $81,000 to keep the program rolling. Division III Millikin opened up its season outside with a 45-6 win over NAIA Hannibal-LaGrange. The Big Blue, yes, the BIG BLUE earned seven bonus victories and a forfeit to cruise in their season opener. Keeping it D3, Delaware Valley got up 26-0 after five matches, but actually had to hang on 29-20 over Penn College. Kyle Hillermeier’s win at 184 pounds finally iced it for the Aggies. Division III Alma beat Davenport in a battle of two of Bloodround’s favorite schools in Michigan. Alma’s Jacob Ransom topped Davenport’s Weston DeHaven 7-0 at 285 pounds to give the Scots the 21-16 victory over the Panthers, who are completing their transition from the NAIA to NCAA Division II. In a dual that featured just three actual individual matches, Arkansas Baptist of the NJCAA topped NAIA Central Baptist 18-15. This isn’t one you really want to promote. Let’s just hope both programs can do a better job of drawing more student-athletes to their respective schools so we don’t have duals with seven forfeits. With some better news in Arkansas, at least for one team, the University of the Ozarks topped Lyon 24-16 in a matchup of two schools from down there. By the way, if you like some dark, twisted stuff - Ozark on Netflix has you covered. I’m almost done with Season 2. Wacky stuff. As far as the dual, well, Ny’Trell Dean had a big fall at 149 to power the Eagles past the Scots. HEY, that’s TWO Scots references tonight - three if you count Tim Flynn, but you can’t count that, since he’s not a Scot anymore. Elsewhere in the NAIA, the Running Eagles of Life beat Truett McConnell 34-10. Omi Acosta has like 90-something wrestlers on his team at Life. Montana State-Northern beat North Idaho 35-3 and in keeping things out west, Clackamas beat Western Wyoming in junior college action 20-18 to extend the Cougars dual meet win streak to 35 in a row. On the women’s side of things, King avenged an early-season loss to Life with a 31-11 win in Marietta. Wins by Ana Luciano at 143 and Rachel Hale at 155 solidified the dual for the Tornado. Episode 434 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast approaches the situation at Division II Truman State University in Missouri with its Athletic Director Jerry Wollmering. On May 2, the school announced it was going to cut wrestling and men's tennis as a cost-cutting measure to help combat cuts in funding school-wide. We'll ask Wollmering why the coaches of the respective teams weren't given the opportunity first to raise funds, what any potential timeline looks like and how this decision impacts students in Missouri and its conference mates within the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Is TSU's cost-effective education to blame? Will there be a chance to reverse this decision? There's a lot of questions still yet to be answered, but here's where we start. On Friday night, I was set to plop down here in the office and fire out another fine episode of Short Time Shots. By the way, that's the show you're listening to and it's a look back at the day's scores and more in college wrestling. I'd also be your host, Hall of Fame wrestling writer, broadcaster and announcer Jason Bryant. But once my wife and I finished having some quiet time watching the most recent episode of Top Chef, I went to the Mat Talk Online headquarters and realized there were like a lot of duals last night. By the time I finished logging them into the nation's most robust college wrestling scoreboard, which you can find at almanac.mattalkonline.com, it was nearly 2 a.m. and I had to be up early Saturday to make chocolate chip pancakes for the girls. Sometimes, I just don't have the time to push out a daily scores episode. Today is different, because there were 104 dual meets that I could track on Saturday - there's a few JUCOs that won't report their results until March, but that's not important right now. It's Saturday, January 27 and here's what we had to roll with. We had two stellar top 10 duals, one in the Big Ten and another between former Big 12 rivals. Where to begin? Let's go with the place that had the bigger crowd and that would almost always be Iowa. No. 7 Michigan beat No. 4 Iowa 21-17 in front of over 10,000 fans in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Michigan wasn't as explosive as it was a week prior when the Wolverines trounced Minnesota. In fact, it seemed like they left a lot of potential bonus points on the table. Credit Iowa for wrestling very tough and nearly pulling out the win in a dual where they were without the services of All-American Michael Kemerer. Alex Marinelli stayed unbeaten, topping Logan Massa 3-2 at 165 pounds, but Michigan would sweep the last four weights with the biggest win coming at 197 pounds where Kevin Beazley topped Cash Wilcke 6-5. The win set up the dual-winning triumph by heavyweight Adam Coon, who beat Sam Stoll 3-2. In Stillwater, things were a bit wild and crazy, like the Wild and Crazy Kids. Anyone remember that? Chances are, if you're below the age of 32, you don't. Nickelodeon was so awesome back in the day -- You Can't Do That On Television, Double Dare, Turkey TV. Oh, speaking of things you're not supposed to do - Jaydin Eierman of Missouri decided to complicate things even more by pinning two-time national champion Dean Heil at 141 pounds in Missouri's 21-19 win over No. 5 Oklahoma State. Combine that with Willie Miklus' modest upset over Preston Weigel at 197 pounds and Brian Smith has his Tigers 16-0 and a clear No. 3 in the Coaches Poll. What's going to make things interesting in the voting this week is the fact Iowa was without Kemerer, but hey, big boy sports right - you play without your starting quarterback, you lose, you drop in the rankings. Rank it like a team sport, when you're looking at dual rankings. No. 10 Virginia Tech got quite a fight from Duke, but a fall by Zack Zavatsky at 184 pounds gave the Hokies enough breathing room to improve to 2-0 in the ACC and 12-2 overall. Zavatsky has scored 10 straight bonus point wins. He also helped the Hokies knock off Lehigh on Friday night. Cornell won two matches on the day. The Big Red beat Harvard 35-3 and Brown 27-9. The two wins give Cornell 80 straight dual meet wins in the Ivy League. Fredy Stroker saw his first action in the Cornell lineup. He split matches on the day, beating Harvard's Brock Wilson but losing to 500th-year senior Justin Staudenmayer of Brown. What's also of interest is Max Dean of Cornell beat his cousin Kanon Dean of Harvard 3-0. Last year, Max's brother Gabe beat Kanon. Must be a rather uncomfortable silence at the kids table on holidays up in Michigan. Rider has emerged as the top dog -- or in this case, horse -- in the EWL after the 19th-ranked Broncs beat 23rd-ranked Lock Haven 22-12. Let's cut right to the chase here. 165 pounds, right? Well, Chance Marsteller continued his climb up the rankings, beating two-time All-American Chad Walsh 8-4. The only other ranked team in action was No. 22 Wyoming, which beat Fresno State 40-6. Ok, let's just get this out of the way, Dewey Krueger is the Jose Oquendo of college wrestling. Don't know who Jose Oquendo is? Look it up. Or don't. The guy was the ultimate utility man in baseball. He could play every position, and over the course of his major league career, he did. Last week, Krueger weighed in at 157 and yes, won by fall at 197. On Saturday, he got another victory, this time at 184 pounds. If Missouri would have been able to borrow him, I'm sure Brian Smith would have thrown HIM out there at heavyweight. Other things in the Division I world that you SHOULD be paying attention to - Binghamton improved to 8-4 and they stand at 5-0 in the EIWA, which is technically in first place. Cornell is 3-0 in conference, but 5-0 is greater than 3-0. Today the Bearcats beat Penn 19-18 and Drexel 21-12 to complete the cheesesteak sweep. That's one helluva job interim head coach Kyle Borshoff has done since taking over the program earlier this season. Sometimes those types of teams can just fall apart with a mid-season coaching change. That loss pretty much seals Drexel's fate from getting ranked this season. But yes, the Dragons did wrestle without Austin DeSanto, but what did we say earlier about wrestling with who you've got? Oh, by the way, that Bell's Hopslam I was talking about the other night? Yeah, pine tree juice. I got about two swigs into it and went NOPE. You can keep your double imperial death star IPAs. I like some hops, but mother of all that's holy, yes, it tasted like stoned cat Christmas tree urine. But hey, I guess some people like that, but I ain't them people. Hofstra's been catching some hell, but the Pride today picked up a good 22-17 win over Buffalo after falling behind 14-0 early on. Dennis Papadatos - the best hair product game in college wrestling. Navy won the All-Academy championships hosted in Charleston, South Cackalacky by The Citadel. The Mids won six individual titles and Jadaen Bernstein was the outstanding wrestler of the event. Army West Point was second. That wraps up our Division I recap, all those scores and more again, at almanac.mattalkonline.com. Speaking of Division I, you know I've talked about the best, most awesome, stellar, bodacious NCAA Division I preview guide? Trust me, it's the ONE thing you need going into Cleveland this year. Yeah, you don't need clothes, but you need this digital preview guide. In other places around the country, Grand View won its 64th dual in a row. The Vikings beat second-ranked Missouri Valley on Friday before finishing up the conference dual schedule with a 31-16 win over No. 14 Baker. Grand View hasn't lost a dual since 2013. They've only lost NINE in school history. This is the 10th year of the program. Ashland went 6-0 at the Midwest Duals hosted by Belmont Abbey, which isn't exactly in the Midwest, it's in North Carolina. Four of those wins came on Saturday. Bellarmine earned its first two conference victories in school history. What's interesting is Bellarmine, which is in Louisville, Kentucky, started a wrestling program by absorbing what was left of the program at St. Catherine's, which closed its entire school two years ago. The Knights beat Truman State and Drury. Tiffin also picked up four wins on the day, beating Queens, Belmont Abbey, Coker and Limestone. Western State Colorado upset No. 10 Central Oklahoma 26-18 in a single dual, while in Division III, we had multiple wins registered by a slew of teams as quads were aplenty. Centenary, Johnson & Wales, TCNJ, NYU, Gettysburg and York -- the one in Pennsylvania -- all had successful dual days. Earlier this month, the namesake of the Pete Willson Invitational, former Wheaton coach Pete Willson passed away. The tournament named in his honor is like the Southern Scuffle or Midlands of Division III. On Saturday, Messiah put five in the finals and outdistanced second-place Mount Union to claim the team championship. The most impressive performances were turned in by 125-pound champion Carlos Fuentes of Wheaton, who beat Baldwin Wallace's Chris Doyle 12-3 in the finals. Mount Union's Jairod James knocked off 2016 Division III champion Ben Swarr 6-4 in the finals at 174 pounds. And UW-La Crosse's Wesley Schultz pinned Messiah All-American Kyle Koser in a minute in the 197-pound final. The tournament showed good individual balance as eight different teams won individual titles, led by Messiah's three -- Stephen Maloney at 149, Kevin Edwards at 157 and Jeff Hojnacki at 165. NO MORE BEARDS! Oh who are we kidding. It’s Minnesota and the beard is like standard issue. I can at least get rid of the neck beard. That catches on all the zippers. But this isn’t a show about grooming, it’s about wrestling. It’s Short Time Shots, a look at the day’s notable news and results from the world of college wrestling, I’m your scribe and not-so-humble host Jason Bryant. At three different points tonight, my wife Abby, who is completely awesome, had to pull me away from my tablet where I was watching the dual between NC State and Old Dominion. Yes, I am an ODU graduate and yes, I make sure I mark time off on our calendar to watch ODU football and wrestling duals that are on my various subscription services. Tonight, the girls, Lucy and Ruby, were decorating the tree. I was helping out, but at points during the tree decorating, I was crouched and going through level changes watching the dual. Hey, I call things down the middle when I’m on work time, but when I’m on my own time, there’s no secret where I went to school. No. 6 NC State topped ODU 25-15 with three straight bonus victories at the final three weights to pull away from the Monarchs. While the Pack were favored to start with, the momentum swung at 157 pounds where Hayden Hidlay got up 4-0 quickly on Larry Early and earned a 13-5 major decision. That win crippled any hopes of a Monarch upset. Pete Renda and Michael Macchiavello earned techs and Malik McDonald earned a major decision to finish off the Monarchs for the host Wolf Pack. In Division II, No. 1 St. Cloud State trounced rival Southwest Minnesota State 39-4. Top-ranked Brett Velasquez earned a technical fall at 125 pounds while Larry Bomstad, ranked No. 1 at 157 also picked up a technical fall. Coach Steve Costanzo’s Huskies have only lost seven duals since 2010. What’s that exactly? They’ve won 131 out of their last 138 duals. In an all-West Virginia matchup, Wheeling Jesuit rallied to win the last six bouts and beat West Liberty 29-12. The Cardinals had four of those six wins via bonus including a fall at 197 pounds by Sawyer Leppla. West Liberty did have one notable win, Darius Bunch upset two-time All-American Dustin Warner 9-3 in sudden victory at 125. Minnesota State rocked Division III St. John’s 36-9 in an all-Minnesota dual, donchaknow. In Division III, 13th-ranked Central dropped only two bouts en route to a 28-12 victory over Augustana -- the one in Illinois. In other action Lourdes split 5-5 with Adrian but a forfeit and two falls were enough to give Lourdes a 24-18 win over the Bulldogs on Thursday. William Penn topped Truman State 27-22 in a D2-NAIA scrap. William Penn’s mascot? The Statesmen! Remember that show The State that was on MTV? Nah, not many do. It was funny. Not Kids in the Hall funny, but still amusing. Keeping it the NAIA, Andrew Nicola’s Concordia (of Nebraska) Bulldogs shutout Dakota Wesleyan 55-0 in GPAC action. Midland won the last two bouts to rally past Doane 25-17 in another GPAC dual. That’s Great Plains Athletic Conference in case you’re wondering. Yes, you were wondering. Oh, we’re not done yet -- Northwestern College, the RED Raiders who are from Orange City, Iowa topped Briar Cliff 19-17. Briar Cliff’s bonus points made it close but Northwestern won six of the 10 bouts for the win. Lindenwood-Belleville won eight of 10 and beat Central Baptist 40-9 in an American Midwest matchup, while second-ranked Missouri Valley dispatched with Benedictine 40-3 in a Heart of American Conference dual. Top matchup there came at 165 pounds where third-ranked T.J. Barnes beat No. 9 Josh Romero 4-3. That’s what’s happening in college wrestling on November 30, 2017.
