Die Bevölkerung altert und schrumpft rasant - viel schneller als in Deutschland. Bis Ende des Jahrhunderts könnte China, das bereits von Indien als bevölkerungsreichstes Land der Erde abgelöst wurde, weit unter eine Milliarde Menschen fallen. Im Jahr 2050 werden die über 60-Jährigen knapp 40 Prozent der Bevölkerung ausmachen. Das konfuzianische Kernprinzip der kindlichen Pietät, Gehorsam der Jungen gegenüber den Alten, wackelt und die Generationenbeziehungen werden neu verhandelt. Was sind die Gründe dafür? Und was sind die Konsequenzen? Wie wird die Pflege der Alten organisiert? Was heißt das für Chinas Außenpolitik? Woher kommt künftig der Wohlstand?
