With credit markets enjoying a strong 2024 and with many uncertainties, charting the course for 2025 is a challenge. Will US trade policies slow Fed cuts and will ECB easing stay the course as priced, and what will this mean for credit? Will stubborn US yields filter into Europe? In this episode of our Credit Crunch podcast, host Mahesh Bhimalingam, chief European credit strategist at Bloomberg Intelligence, and Marc Rovers, Head of European Credit at Legal & General Investment Management, discuss the state of credit and the 2025 outlook for US and Europe. They tackle relative value across credit on both sides of the Atlantic; high yield and high grade; fund flows and supply; defaults and ratings; fundamental and curve views. They also detail the risks across the US, UK and Europe, including German and French politics.

Producer Confidence & Consumer Confidence (in the Economy), & Our Confidence (in Our Analyses): Noah Smith & Brad DeLong Record the Podcast We, at Least, Would Like to Listen to!; Aspirationally Bi-Weekly (Meaning Every Other Week); Aspirationally an hour...Key Insights:* The disjunction between all the economic data having been very good and very strong for the past year and tons of reports and commentary about how people “weren't feeling it” is mostly the result of the fact that things work with lags.* There are other factors: partisan politics, and the insistence of Republicans that they must not only vote but also at least say that they agree with their tribe.* There are other factors: the old journalistic adage that “what bleeds, leads”, exponentiated by the effects of our current short attention-span clickbait culture.* There are other factors: journalists, commentators, and the rest of the shouting class are depressed as their industries collapse around them, and somewhat of their situation leaks through.* There are other factors: while people think they personally are doing well, they do remember stories of others not doing wellm and are concerned.* But mostly it was just that things operate with lags: that was the major source of the “vibecession” gloom-and-doom which was at sharp variance with the actual economic dataflow.* We are not the modelers: we are, rather, the agents in the model.* The metanarrative is always harder than the narrative: trying to answer “why don't people say they think the economy is good?” is very hard to answer in a non-stupid way, and most of us are much better off just saying: “hey, guys, the economy is really good!”* It is good to be long reality—as long as you are not so leveraged that your position gets sold out from under you before the market marks itself to reality,.* Lags gotta lag.* And, finally, hexapodia!References:* Burn-Murdoch, John. 2023. “Should we believe Americans when they say the economy is bad?” Financial Times, December 1 .* Cummings, Ryan, & Neale Mahoney. 2023. “Asymmetric amplification and the consumer sentiment gap”. He said Pioneer could ramp up to 10% growth for a few years if there's a global effort to replace Russian exports. S&P Global Commodity Insights recently raised its outlook for US oil supply growth to just under 1 million barrels per day for 2022 to account for higher sustained prices. The data show. Demand in April and May is within a hair of where it was in 2019, the highest demand in 11 years.- $20 trillion of economic stimulus is doing something, perhaps, in a broad sense. Causing price inflation and showing up in petroleum demand- Urban commuting picking up- Trend that contrast is when we look at capex, investment and drilling activity- NEVER been lower, even during Great Financial crisis in 2008.- Many companies say they are "people limited" have to find employees.- Is it just a US issue? - MENA region is also not showing growth. Sovereign level too.- Record demand recovery and also need to replace natural decline in oil wells. Record low - Policy really matters - in Colorado new setback rules have pushed drilling to the edges of the basin. This is why breakeven price has risen there.- Bakken basin shift isn't related to regulatory activity- Private companies vs. public companies drilling: less questioning for private companies so they can ramp up faster. Public companies more capital discipline.- Will US drilling be as nimble as they have been?- Drilling activity isn't keeping up with EIA model for US drilling. They expect over 1 million bpd more from US and it doesn't look like that's happening. - Brent/WTI price differential is less than $1 per barrel. Tells us that there's a pull for US crude as opposed to Brent and that is pushing the price differential down. - Consumers aren't planning for continued rise in prices. Federal leasing moratorium, tax proposals, state regulations are factoring into price expectations in futures markets and that factors into our prices today.- we know that people are driving less and flying less, but shift towards freight shipping is picking up the slack in oil consumption- naphtha and other products are WAY up. enduring need for medical plastics and packaging to support online retailing.- Instead of 13 million bpd of production in 2019, US is only around 11 million bpd and the difference is coming from imports.- Even though we have very high oil exports in May, we're still importing more oil.- We need more investment and policies that enable that. We are seeing the result of less investment in oil and gas resources right now.

Interview with Mark Chalmers, CEO of Energy Fuels UUUUMark discusses Section 232 and how the Presidential Memorandum has been received the Uranium Market. Speculation is abound as to what the The 90 day Working Group has been asked to do and what all the possible outcomes will be. Some say Section 232 is not dead for the US Uranium companies. Others say that this has led to a much bigger discussion for Nuclear Fuel Industry as a whole. The Memorandum says it is to look at Nuclear Fuel Production. What is clear is that despite the continued uncertainty for fuel buyers and uranium companies, everyone is claiming it as a win, albeit one which leaves sour taste in the mouth. Mark Chalmers has no regrets. And what exactly will be decided in 90 days? It took over 12 months to respond to the Section 232 petition. Will US uranium production be used only for Department of Defence needs? And what does "domestic uranium production concerns to be addressed" mean?Just how annoyed are the utility companies with Energy Fuels. Will they be punished? Plus just how many friends do Mark and Amir have left in the Uranium community for submitting the Section 232 petition and paralysing the contract market? Is Energy Fuels prepared? Does it have enough cash? And will it use the White Mesa Mill to bend others to its will? The good news is that the macro story is strong.
