The Season 7 finale episode. Our guest is Tourette scientist Dr. Flint Espil, who talks with us about the latest Tourette treatments and questions before saying something we weren't expecting. In a great way. Seamus Evans, an ambassador for the Tourette Syndrome Association of Australia, is a standup comedian, television and radio personality, and keynote speaker working in his experience with Tourette and the boundaries it seemed to set for him -- which he essentially laughed right past. Not that it was overnight-easy. Not that he didn't have the challenges and self-doubt and depression and everything else on the TS dinner menu. He brought all of that along and today shares what he figured out about himself. His story is so kinetic that we need a part-two. Bandrew is one of my early and most important connections on my content creation journey. When looking for a microphone to record my first podcast in mid 2017 the Podcastage YouTube Channel was the resource that helped me overcome the overwhelm and make an informed decision. I chose the Samson Q2U, and shared my first episode with Bandrew when it was published. Bandrew recommended I look into Better Podcasting and I turned up to one of their live recordings of their episodes and connected with Stargate Pioneer, Stephen Jondrew and Emily Prokop. I stuck around the Podcastage community and joined the Discord server that Bandrew launched in September of 2017. The Podcastage community has brought so many connections with others that I am entirely grateful for, and the discord server is my most favourite place on the internet. Previous guest Mark Diaz is one of those amazing connections. In December of 2017, Bandrew and I co-hosted a livestream for the Better Podcasting community because SP & SJ weren't able to host an episode. That was a lot of fun! Then in March of 2018 Bandrew joined me for the finale of the first Sunshine Summit Livestream event. And he came back to be a part of the second event where we had an encore playing Portal 2 on Twitch. We've co-hosted a segment for International Podcast Day, and the 4th Livestream For the Cure. Bandrew invited me to have Sunshine & PowerCuts became a part of the Geeks Rising Podcast Network of which Zach, Logan, Cody, Malcolm & Ducky are a part of and since then we've done a few Geeks Rising livestreams...Throughout the conversation we talk about Bandrew's journey, and all the milestones (celebrating milestones is one of my favourite things to do) with Podcastage, the Bandrew Says Podcast, Bandrew Plays, Watchcastage. I restate Bandrew's PSA about turning your headphones down. Protect your hearing! ... Bandrew talks about what audio is to him. And it's a good reminder to tune in to the world around you. I ask about various types of forms of inspiration to try and shine a light on Bandrew's journey of connecting with the things that he makes. We talk about consumption of content, and reading books. I loved this conversation so much. It had been a long time since we have had a chance to catch up and we had a lot of fun and laughed a lot.We also fell off the rails many times, but I've left in a particular segment where a bit of shade was thrown and we ended up in a fit of laughter. On a more serious note, I have learnt a lot from Bandrew and value his approach to helping others and sharing his journey and if you haven't discovered all that Bandrew creates I highly recommend checking them out.You can find more about Bandrew & his content here:bandrewscott.compodcastage.comgeeksrising.com@bandrewsays & @podcastage on Twitter If you have a connection with Bandrew, the Podcastage YouTube Channel, Geeks Rising, Bandrew Plays or Watchcastage we'd love to hear from you!Or if you've made a connection to Bandrew or something he mentioned after listening, please share them with us.And if you know of anyone who may benefit from listening to and learning from Bandrew please share this episode with them too. For the love of comics and film.Malcolm is a friend I met through our mutual connection with the Geeks Rising Podcast Network.Passionate about comics and film, Malcolm is a manager of a comic book store, and one of the co-hosts of the movie review podcast On The Subject, with Zach and Logan. Malcolm shares his comic book origin story and thanks to Malcolm's recommendation of the Greg Pak Firefly comics during my guest recording with On The Subject of Serenity 2005, I have dived in to my journey with comics. In the year 2000, a lover of reading, Malcolm visited the library regularly and branched out into comics from the selection available there and then at the supermarket came across an Ultimate Spider-Man comic. He owns every copy of the series and without it he wouldn't have made some of the very important connections in his life! We briefly talk about the importance of the online presence of the comic community. We agree on the importance of the connection of being able to "hear" the characters in comics. Malcolm compares reading the storyboards of a movie to a reading a comic, and power of the pacing, a page turn, the drama and personal danger of handling a physical comic... He shares the nightly routine he has with comics that have helped him stay connected to and invested in comics.Connections to people have really important in helping Malcolm get through. Malcolm knows of people who have lost their jobs due the closures of businesses but seeing their's and others resilience has been inspiring. He also has a great support network around him.Malcolm shares about how he came to be a part of On The Subject and his early connection with Zach and longtime connection with Logan. He also talks about what they cover on the show and how he prepares for it and what he looks for in film. Malcolm loves ideas, and the crux of films are the scripts. He loves a good superhero and enjoys the portrayal of a better world through both comics and film. We briefly reminisce about the Jewel Staite Cameo that I arranged for the guys of Geeks Rising in 2020 to brighten their day. Malcolm shares his podcast recommendations:Film podcasts - 1. Cody is a wonderful connection I made through Logan Naugle of Geeks Rising when Logan and Cody created the post apocalyptic audio drama podcast called Stuck Listening. I provided my voice for their episode Shock Jocks and the CRT in Season 1. Previous guest and fellow Geeks Rising member, Zachary Jackson wrote their final episode Solomon Justice: Hard crimes in hard times. Music, art, life. They all intertwine for Cody. In March of 2021, Cody released a new song called Call My Name with his first music video to accompany the song.He has previously released the album titled Almost Home. Cody learnt how to play clarinet proficiently, then learnt piano, guitar and has a talent for singing. His brother Cosmo is his musical partner and together they have created music that, for me, has awesome weekend/summer vibes. Cody shares about the making of Call My Name, both the genesis of the song and the development of the music video.Calling himself an "artist" is something Cody struggles with because he hasn't settled on one particular medium, however he loves and thrives on collaborative projects like making comics, music and podcasting. Through his Patreon, he shares a lot of his creative works including a new Bootscoot Bootleg Radio show in which he interviews guests in-between music and callers can call in and request songs. His first guest was his brother Cosmo talking about their new single Call My Name and Cody, through the show, makes an incredible listening experience. It is a fun and creative way of delivering an interview. When Cody was starting out he found Winston Hauschild who was a huge inspiration for him, and Cody would love to be that kind of inspiration for someone. One of Cody's important connections is Gabby Vee, and one of her exhibitions at & Gallery is how Logan and Cody met each other. Logan's wife Cynthia has been supportive & encouraging Cody to not undersell himself. Logan is a friend I met through our mutual connection with the Geeks Rising Podcast Network.Logan hosted The Paper Robots podcast on the Geeks Rising Network, which I enjoyed before becoming a part of the network with him. He has since gone on to form and is one of the co-hosts on On The Subject podcast, with Malcolm & Zach. Logan also hosted Conversations With Creators and has an audio-drama with Cody Jaey called Stuck Listening. Logan is a writer and has created the Beard & Frog comic and will be publishing Serpent Inc. Logan is passionate about storytelling. He's been in bands and loves collaborative projects like making comics, and our shared experiences as well as the metaphors in film for experiences.Other than his connections with fellow Geeks Rising network member, Logan gravitates towards creative people, and his wife Cynthia Naugle aka Ten Times A Tiger is his most important connection. Cynthia is the head curator of & Gallery in Tucson. Podcast Recommendations:Working It OutEmpire Podcast Logan often has Lord of The Rings on rotation in his watchlist. Zach is a friend I met through our mutual connection with the Geeks Rising Podcast Network. He is one of the co-hosts on On The Subject podcast, with Logan and Malcolm and has also interviewed creators on Conversations With Creators. We have collaborated on Sunshine Summit & Geeks Rising Livestreams and I have been a guest on On The Subject for Resident Evil 3 &4, Serenity & Doom The Movie.Malcolm & Zach had a podcast called Culture Popped, which eventually merged with The Paper Robots podcast hosted by Logan, and then the three decided to create an entirely new show called On The Subject. I asked Zach how he prepares for the On The Subject recordings. Zach has also written an episode of Logan & Cody's podcast Stuck Listening: Solomon Justice - Hard Crimes in Hard Times. Zach is passionate about film, as a form of media to enjoy and a way of self-expression.He keeps memos on his phone, and notes in a moleskin notepad and various other notepads that he's kept.He share's a little about his creative writing process. He'd love to make a film in New Zealand, and of course I fully support this!Other than his connections with fellow Geeks Rising network members, Charlie Feldman and Keeley Bumford of Dresage Music have been notable connections for Zach on his journey. As well as the #writingsprint on Twitter run by John August of the Script Notes podcast. Things that have helped Zach:Discord for connecting and playing games with friends.Libby app for borrowing and reading books from his local library. Zach is working on a western screenplay which I can't wait to see how that unfolds. Zach has been reading:Annihilation, 3 Body Problem and The Indifferent Stars Above. Hey everyone, welcome to the Just Heather's podcast. As with any introductory episode, I introduce this new project Just Heather's.My name is Heather, and this is just a podcast to share thoughts, projects and things I'm enjoying with you. It's an audio diary. You'll find it in the Personal Journals category. It might not be your cup of tea, and that's ok with me. This is a personal project, but if you'd like to join me, I would love to share it with you! I also the host of the Sunshine & PowerCuts podcast, the Sunshine Summit bi-annual Livestream Events, and have live-streamed over at twitch.tv/SunPowerPod. Sunshine & PowerCuts is part of the Geeks Rising podcast network. Sunshine & PowerCuts is about my journey and lessons learned relying on nature to power my home and life. However, my favourite podcast episodes to record were actually the bonus episodes for patrons of Sunshine & PowerCuts. They were more like an audio diary and thus inspired the the way I create these episodes. A huge thank you to the patrons of Sunshine & PowerCuts for being an incredible light in my life and their very generous support over the years! Yeah. It’s that one most wonderful time of the year when we all sit around and contemplate what the hell had happened. And this time it’s not just me asking myself “what the hell was that” but everyone who survived the year. Was it that bad really though? I don’t know. We had some good games and some pretty bad ones. But most importantly we had some time to play them (not me though I was working day job). And I hope that we have become more content with what we have and what we achieved. I wish you all to survive the upcoming year and have more interesting games in your life as well as more time to play them. And you heard that right: Duck in Games is now part of Geeks Rising network. I am happy as Duck about it. You asked for it -- more teenage voices on Tourette's Podcast. Shylah, known around the web as Simply Tourettes, represents that voice dang well, and candidly so. She opens up, smartly dissects the struggles of reckoning with a perceived-to-be-weird thing like Tourette Syndrome at her age of 13, and finding ways to build structure around it. Everyone can relate to this one in one way or another. PLUS: Upcoming free webinars, and a notable listener gives Spot the TS Studio Cat a stylish hat. When Kyle was growing up, he experienced the very torment so many Touretters can relate to -- being bullied, being punished for tics, a lack of empathy within the family, et cetera -- and in turn vented angrily to the people around him. Once he noticed his young son, Bryson, was clearly displaying tics, Kyle was determined to give him a different outlook. Today, Bryson, 9, is a highly focused taekwondo competitor viewed as advanced for his age, so much that people around him view his Tourette as a strength. Posting videos of his training and words of Tourette positivity, Bryson has built a following on Instagram. Now, his entire town knows his face -- it's on a giant billboard advertising Tourette Awareness Month, which begins now -- May 15 -- and runs through June 15. There is some discussion of CBD and marijuana in a medicinal sense on this episode. Remember, Tourette's Podcast is not a medical advice show; any discussions of medications or forms of treatment you hear on the show are just things we talk about in the course of discussing individuals’ experience. We covered the question of marijuana for TS treatment in last week’s episode. In other news, the Tourette Association of America’s Virtual Conference begins today (May 15). The two-day event has an amazing, stacked menu of sessions you’ll benefit from. A different kind of episode this week. After hearing from Touretters on the Tourette's Podcast Answering Machine, we talk Tourette science and medicine with one of the best -- Dr. John Walkup, Chair of the Pritzker Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. We get his backstory, how he wandered into Tourette as a focus, and then we cover the most frequently asked question submitted to Tourette's Podcast -- what's the lowdown on marijuana as a Tourette treatment? Valid? Problematic? Needs work? Let's circle up and learn. In the second half of the episode, we talk anxiety science -- what's going on in our brains when we feel it? What's the use of it? Where can we take it? Hugely thankful to have Dr. Walkup guide us through. Tourette's Podcast is made possible with the support of the Tourette Association of America. When Ben was in the hospital (as talked about on Episode 0 of this season), one of the things that got him through was a book called "Twist and Shout: An Awkward Life With Tourettes." The author, Tyler Oberheu, had loaded it with stuff to laugh or nod over. On every page. Snarky angles. Oddities. Trials. Existential silly-string. That "can this be real?" feeling. And some warm, honest takes on what the point of all this might be. On this episode, we hear from the author himself, who immediately conveys that the personality he shows us in the book is sincere. Tyler also discusses his own time in the hospital. Tourette's Podcast is made possible with support from the Tourette Association of America, tourette.org. Matt Sawyer AKA noMad is a rapper from St. Paul, Minnesota who hadn't put much thought into writing anything about Tourette Syndrome until his producer told him to. Seems like it would be a challenge to condense a life of experience with TS, associated school-ground ridicule and personal healing into a radio-length song. But he'd spent a lot of time learning himself, and the instincts poured out of him. This conversation captures a lot of what orbited that process and how it's good to evaluate ourselves and whether we're doing what we want or what society wants. The measures of prestige sometimes have nothing to do with our own personal quests, Matt points out. Major takeaways here. Do not miss this episode. Daisy is a solid mom. She didn't let all the Tourette-flattening forces of the world set the course for her 8-year-old son, Angel, who was diagnosed with TS about a year ago. Even the diagnosis was a migraine, coming with some odd advice about what the world would be like for Angel. Daisy shut it down, did what solid parents do and figured out how to give her child a world he could shape for himself. This is a highlight episode, especially for parents but certainly for everyone. Plus: An update on Treating Tourette Together. A reminder about the Tourette Association of America's Inaugural Virtual Conference, FREE, May 15-16. PowEp026 – Heat Wave, Thermodynamics, Music by NatureIn this episode we begin with a few announcements: Sunshine & PowerCuts can now be found on GeeksRising.com Geeks Rising is a curated podcast network which features podcasts by passionate people encouraging you to explore your passions and empowering you to become a better creator. In association with Geeks Rising, preparation is underway for the March Sunshine Summit 2019 livestream event.A huge thank you to the Patrons of Sunshine & PowerCuts for their support which helped secure the home for the event at sunshinesummit.liveHere you'll find the details of the guest list and schedule, as well as links to the previous events and it is where the livestreams for 2019 will be taking place. So head over and check it out. If you know the guest we'd love you to come and celebrate with us. If they are new to you, come and meet them and get to know them. We look forward to connecting with you in the live chat during the event. From this episode:We've had a heat wave with temperatures in excess of 33C inside my house, even with all the doors and windows open hoping to catch a breeze. The spa pool has been in use to cool down, and I briefly mention the different ways we've tried to heat the water up to take the chill off - because with the air temperature being so hot and no heating element for the pool, it makes it easier to get in when the difference is not so vast.At the January Wellington Podcast Brunch Club meetup, one of the members asked me about Stirling Engines. There's a lot to know about Stirling Engines so I encourage you to look into it, if you aren't already familiar.Correction: in the episode I say that there is "fluid of gas" - what I mean is that there is fluidity or movement of the gas between a hot region and cold region. Also the heat and cold are applied externally to the closed system. Then I share an article I came across which I found really interesting, about a NZ scientist who took weather data and assigned musical instruments in software to represent the data points and the result was nature's own symphony.Links from this Episode:https://www.radionz.co.nz/news/national/379899/listen-niwa-scientist-converts-weather-patterns-into-music I'd love to hear from you:Let me know if you have experience with Stirling Engines, if you're in a heatwave, how you've been keeping cool (or how you've been keeping warm if it's cold where you are), when you've noticed the music of nature from example I was woken by the rain at 2:30am and I enjoyed listening to the waves of rain influenced by the wind. And finally, if you know of any instances where information has been shared in a creative way like in the article about the Scientist converting weather patterns into music. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ The Sunshine & PowerCuts podcast:Hosted by Heather Welch This podcast features two types of episodes which alternate. Sunshine ones offer inspiration drawn from nature, In PowerCut episodes like this one I share insights into my life living off the power grid.
