She rose to fame as a member of Girls Aloud, a pop girl group created through ITV's reality competition show Popstars: The Rivals in 2002. Named the United Kingdom's best-selling girl group of the 21st century in 2012, Girls Aloud amassed a string of 20 consecutive UK top ten singles (including four number ones), two UK number one albums, five consecutive platinum-selling studio albums, and five Brit Award nominations, winning Best Single for "The Promise" in 2009. The group went on an indefinite hiatus in 2013, before reuniting for a tour in 2024.While still in Girls Aloud, Cheryl began a solo career in April 2009, and between then and 2014, she released four studio albums – 3 Words (2009), Messy Little Raindrops (2010), A Million Lights (2012) and Only Human (2014). Collectively, the albums spawned ten singles, five of which – "Fight for This Love", "Promise This", "Call My Name", "Crazy Stupid Love" and "I Don't Care" – reached the top position on the UK Singles Chart. Cheryl was the first British female solo artist to have five number-one singles in the UK, and she held the record until Jess Glynne overtook her in 2018.Cheryl became a judge on the UK show of the television talent show The X Factor in 2008. She mentored two of the eventual winners of the competition (Alexandra Burke in series five and Joe McElderry in series six), before resigning in 2011 after series seven and joining the panel of the US version of the series, which she left during the auditions stage. She returned to judge series eleven and twelve of the UK series in 2014 and 2015. Cheryl next served as a judge on the television dance competition The Greatest Dancer from 2019 to 2020, and made her stage debut in the West End play 2:22 A Ghost Story in 2023.Cheryl has become a recognised and photographed style icon, being referred to as a "fashionista" by the press. Born in Belgium in 1954 to conservative, Catholic parents, Lucy Sante migrated to New York in the 1960s, where she became associated with the Bohemian artistic milieu of the city. After producing several highly acclaimed works of history such as Low Life and The Other Paris and translating Félix Fénéon's feuilletons for NYRB as Novels in Three Lines, she announced in 2021 that she was transitioning: ‘Yes, I've known since at least age 11 but probably earlier and yes, I suppressed and denied it for decades', she wrote at the time. In I Heard Her Call My Name (Hutchinson Heinemann), ‘a generous, fearlessly revealing book' (Samantha Hunt), she describes with great grace, wit and humility her decision to begin living the life she knew was truly hers.Sante is in conversation about her memoir with writer and filmmaker Juliet Jacques. Interview by Kyra-Jade CoombsSydney trio Yours Truly stamped themselves on the Australian music landscape with their impressive 2020 album Self Care, which was nominated for an ARIA for Best Hard Rock or Heavy album.Rather than rest on their laurels, the band attacked their craft with even more intent, spending 2023 touring Europe alongside You Me At Six, ticking off their first-ever UK headline shows, supporting Against The Current in North America and touring Australia nationally with Neck Deep.Yours Truly kicked off 2024 with an appearance at THPS25 in Brisbane, celebrating 25 years of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater with Tony Hawk himself in attendance, as well as embarking on their entirely sold-out Call My Name Tour across Australia in March. The band will also return overseas later this year, appearing at Reading and Leeds Festival in the UK this August alongside headliners Blink-182, Fred Again, Lana Del Rey, Liam Gallagher and many more.It is a fitting reward for a band who have championed the cause of Australian music at every opportunity, with their new album, TOXIC (out August 16), set to propel the band and their music to even greater heights.HEAVY caught up with vocalist Mikaila Delgado and guitarist Teddie Winder-Haron to venture inside the new album and the band's future plans."Nervous, and excited," Teddie smiled when asked how they were feeling about the impending release of Toxic. "Mostly excited. We've been hanging out a bunch prepping for all the shows we've got coming up and practicing a lot, so I think just being around each other is hyping each other up. Still a little bit nervous, but I guess that's part of it."HEAVY asks about the selection process for album singles."Call My Name we chose just because we loved it, so much," Mikaila began. "It was actually finished before we tracked the album. It was the first song we tracked for the record and everyone was like wait and see what other songs we get from the album when it is finished - because a song can change - and we got to a point where we thought this song is still gonna be good, let's just put it out. I think Sour was the same. When we wrote it, we were like, this is gonna be a single. I guess it's just having that gut feeling."Watch/listen to the full interview for more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

The South comprises 38% of the U.S. population but it represents over half, yes over half at 52% of all new HIV diagnoses. Let me drop another stat on you. Out of the 17 states defined as being in the South by the U.S. Census; 13 of them have HIV-Specific Criminal Laws or Statutes on the books & 11 of them have actually prosecuted people for living with HIV. HIV Criminalization is still real. I'm sharing these stats because you need to know. Kate Wolf speaks to cultural critic and historian Lucy Sante about her latest book, I Heard Her Call My Name: A Memoir of Transition. It is the story of how as living as Luc for almost the entirety of her life, three years ago, she became Lucy. The book begins with the letter she sent her closest friends with the "bombshell" confession that the image of herself as a woman had been “the consuming furnace at the center” of her life, but that she had repressed it with almost equal force. Sante goes on to reflect back on that life, from her time growing up in Belgium as the only child of emotionally distant working class parents, to her adolescence as an immigrant in suburban New Jersey, and finally her nascent adult years as a punk and budding writer in a pre-corporatized New York City. Intercutting this past with the practical steps and transcendent emotions that accompany her first few months of transitioning, Sante explores the ways she contorted herself to fit into her male identity and the great unhappiness it caused, as well as the path to finally unburdening herself of her secret and emerging as Lucy. Also, Nathan Thrall, author of A Day in the Life of Abed Salama: Anatomy of a Jerusalem Tragedy, returns to recommend Rian Malan's My Traitor's Heart: A South African Exile Returns to Face His Country, His Tribe, and His Conscience.

Reflecting on John 11:17-44, Matt Lozano is joined in this episode by Nick Jorgenson from Acts XXIX Ministries. "So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, 'Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.'" John 11:41-42 NIV.Jesus is God speaking human. He chooses to speak with us through the humanity of His Son, Jesus Christ. Like the tomb of Lazarus, we have parts of ourselves that we shrink away from, things in our life that we want to hide from Jesus. But it is in our darkest place, our vulnerable moments, that the Gospel holds the most truth. As He did for Lazarus, He longs to  call your name. In calling YOUR name from YOUR tomb,  He's saying that He knows you. He knows all of you. He desires you.  He desires ALL of you.  He says,  "Dead man come out!" We all have access to the Father. God always hears us! He rejoices in our triumphs and weeps for our sorrows. What is the Good News for you today? Out of the 17 states defined as being in the South by the U.S. Census; 13 of them have HIV-Specific Criminal Laws or Statutes on the books & 11 of them have actually prosecuted people for living with HIV.
