Send us a textAfter seeing a clip of Wicked star Ariana Grande saying her favorite film is Jamie Babbit's But I'm A Cheerleader and being confused by the excitement of lesbians everywhere, Haylie knew it was time to see what the fuss was for herself. Lauren gleefully obliged, and here you have the conversation that followed. We were thrilled by the abundance of camp, shocked at how young and innocent the non-lesbian lesbian icon Natasha Lyonne was in 1999, and of course had to discuss the commentary peeking through the unseriousness of this film. Please leave us a review and download, it really helps us out! On season 9, episode 3 of Paid in Puke, we've got spirit for Jamie Babbit's 1999 satirical comedy, "But I'm a Cheerleader", starring Natasha Lyonne, Clea Duvall, Melanie Lynskey, Cathy Moriarty, Katharine Towne, Mink Stole, RuPaul, Bud Cort, and for 5 seconds, a Dawson's Creek-era Michelle Williams. Special guest Kate Preusser, managing editor at Lookout Landing* joins us to talk about why this is one of two influential films from her early twenties (the other being Showgirls). Still, Kate had the most Hot Probs, in relation to representation and some of Megan's toxic traits.  Kate also brings to us some Fun Facts, as well as the not-so-fun bad takes from the (mostly cis male) critics of 1999 that saddled this delightful film with a low Rotty T score that persists to this day.  Baxter's offspring joins us on Keggers with Kids, and on the Lunchtime Poll, we reveal things we didn't know about ourselves until someone else pointed it out.   *Lookout Landing is an online Seattle Mariner's baseball community.

In this shortcast edition of the Podcast for Social Research, recorded live at BISR Central, BISR's Rebecca Ariel Porte, Paige Sweet, and special guest Sonia Werner take an in-depth look back at Jamie Babbit's 1999 queer cult classic But I'm a Cheerleader—a campy send-up of gay conversion therapy and compulsory heterosexuality. What are the “roots” of sexual desire? Rebecca, Paige, and Sonia parse the film's playful mockery of the very notion—spoiler alert!—that sexuality (of any stripe) has anything so neatly grounded about it. Topics touched on include: sexuality's intersubjective structure, plastic flowers and monochrome palettes, Robert Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy, comedy as coping mechanism, femme queerness, butch visibility, camp as a celebration of surfaces, Foucault, discipline, straight pedagogy, and more!  You can download the episode by right-clicking here and selecting “save as.” Or, look us up on Spotify or Apple Podcasts. It's still May for a few more hours, but Pride Month starts *now* at Spooky Tuesday. We just couldn't wait — and with a new Fifth Tuesday giving us the chance to cover any movie across all genres, we knew we had to do But I'm A Cheerleader (1999). An instant queer classic, this candy-colored flick is packed full of heart, silliness, and undeniable chemistry between Natasha Lyonne and Clea DuVall.  Whether you first watched it as a preteen without parental supervision or only saw it after MUNA and Phoebe Bridgers dropped their "Silk Chiffon" music video, it's pretty much consensus that Jamie Babbit's satirical rom-com is required viewing — and if you somehow still haven't seen it, well, we would be honored to make the introduction.   References:https://mubi.com/notebook/posts/visualizing-liberation-in-but-i-m-a-cheerleader-9518https://www.indiewire.com/features/general/clea-duvall-but-im-a-cheerleader-scary-time-1234773201/https://variety.com/2020/film/features/but-im-a-cheerleader-director-jamie-babbit-20th-anniversary-1234842163/https://southseattleemerald.com/2023/02/20/new-moon-movie-night-but-im-a-cheerleader-is-one-of-my-roots/ https://www.them.us/story/but-im-a-cheerleader-transformed-elliot-page-life Behind the Scenes:https://youtu.be/zlaIm9EYfcIDeleted Scenes:https://youtu.be/zOo_vYgdLkohttps://youtu.be/cen8Q0wgGTQTattle Tale - Glass Case Cello Case (aka THE SONG of this movie):https://youtu.be/RzVeKbWaniI"Silk Chiffon" by MUNA:https://youtu.be/fhyk9rchC2c

We go through an extensive list of gaylor evidence, including referencing The Archers podcast and this article: https://ew.com/music/2019/05/13/taylor-swift-pop-culture-obsessions/ before breaking down our love of the campy teen movie "But I'm A Cheerleader," a lesbian comedy featuring Natasha Lyonne starring as the main character. forced to go to a gay conversion therapy camp for teens. All month long January has been FILMUARY here at Gay For Play. This week, we're ending the month by discussing a queer cult classic, the 1999 satirical romantic comedy: But I'm a CheerleaderAnd the boys are not alone this week! We're joined by dear friend of the pod Becca Rowland, who last joined us on our The Last of Us (Part 1) episode last March! Becca's the one who recommended we watch this movie for our last episode of Filmuary, and we're so glad she did, because the three of us have so much to say about this joyful, silly, campy, gay ass movie. But I'm a Cheerleader, directed by Jamie Babbit, stars Natasha Lyonne as Megan Bloomfield, a high school cheerleader who is sent to a conversion therapy camp to "cure" her of her homosexuality.  The three of us discuss how the movie satirizes its heavy subject matter with razor-sharp comedy and heart, and how above all else, this movie centers and celebrates queer joy in an incredibly forward-thinking movie for the turn of the millennium. It's got an incredibly diverse cast, knockout performances, and SO many good jokes. (Also, Prince Zuko and RuPaul are in it?) We highly recommend it! Plus it's easy to view online if you wanna give it a watch before listening to our thoughts. Becca Rowland (she/they) is a Chicago-based actor, musician, and improviser. Featuring special guests Emily Csuy (of Stoop Kidz!: A Hey Arnold! Podcast) and Charlie Mackin (https://twitter.com/charliemander13)! BUT I'M A CHEERLEADER is Jamie Babbit's tacky, iconic entry in the history of sardonic queer cinema, panned at release but brought back as a cult classic by the queer communities it was made for. Its dire subject matter (an all-American cheerleader discovers her homosexuality by force when she's sent to conversion therapy) is wrapped in a bubblegum aesthetic and inflammatory, comedic writing, positioning it between somewhere between “quaint queer dramedy” and “John Waters camp”. Its insistence on subverting straight symbology and queering the “traditional Western lifestyle” expands its focus beyond a singular queer girl finding herself to include conversations we're still having today on gender expression, matrimony, queer joy, and more. While Becca questions if this film is based on her own life, Molly discovers her root to lesbianism is similar to the characters. The satirical element of this film highlights the stereotypes and that we must fit into a particular category: boy or girls, pink or blue, gay or straight… or a cheerleader. As they fall in love with a little help from the ex-ex gays and underground homo-rail road. Only Megan would get kicked out of a conversion camp for homosexual activity. Returning to win her love back, in the only way she knows how… with a cheer. This relatable, comedic film is a light-hearted twist on a much more serious topic. For a wildly unpredictable new year, Sam and Jordan have a wildly unpredictable Aughtsterion coming at you thanks to Jamie Babbit's 2005 meditation on Very Sad Mysteries: The Quiet. This episode is really one for the books you guys, because it finds your co-hosts lobbying for The Quiet as the definitive 2000s anti-erotic thriller while providing you with a huge insider tip for how to get cast in a Sam Wineman feature film. Elisha Cuthbert is saying fuck your girl next door fantasies. Katy Mixon is giving a tour de force mean girl performance. Edie Falco is a tragic "prescript-a-holic", and taken all together, Babbit is leading this ensemble through a blistering commentary on the tropes of patriarchal Lolita lust in genre. If you wrote this movie off before then wake your ass up. It's time to correct the record.   Produced by: Jordan Crucchiola Music by: Sam Wineman

“Let’s Be Bad” premiered on March 5th, 2012. It was written by Julie Rottenberg and Elisa Zuritsky, and directed by Jamie Babbit. As performers in the Bombshell workshop are warming up for the start of a rehearsal day, Derek uses Karen to work on a new sequence for the bridge sequence. Ivy walks in and clearly startled asks “am I late?” Eileen is anxious about the script developments, interrupting Tom in a date with a handsome lawyer who he’s just not that into. But it’s really Julia who is stalling over dinner at Westway Diner with Michael Swift.   Eileen uses sneaky Ellis to spy on Julia’s progress. Derek is pissed about everything going well, even pitting Ivy against Karen by asking Cartwright to perform a tricky vocal passage in front of a full company rehearsal.  In their private rehearsal, Karen graciously apologizes for the awkward situation, which Ivy labels “taking singing lessons from a chorus girl.” Ivy has a lot on her plate but she’s handling it, which she shows both the audience in the rehearsal room and watching on TV with a fully-staged fantasy version of “Let’s Be Bad.” After the rehearsal, Sam confines in Ivy that “This company has too many drama queens as it is.” We find out Sam is gay, even though he likes sports (!)  Afterwards, drunk Ivy confronts Derek at his apartment about why he can’t support her more. Derek tells her he wishes that people “didn’t have those annoying feelings,” to which Ivy yells back “THEATRE IS ABOUT FEELINGS!” Derek the Nightmare gives her a pseudo-apology, which is more than enough for Ivy to spend the night!  Also, Julia’s son gets arrested because she’s out with Michael Swift, who woos her with a front stoop serenade. And Karen learns how to be sexy to help her boyfriend Dev get a leg up in the running for the mayor’s new press secretary. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ben brings Jennie Livingston's seminal Harlem vogueing documentary PARIS IS BURNING to illustrate its portrayal of the American Dream (as well as Kenneth Anger's subversive touchstone FIREWORKS and Todd Haynes's First Amendment firebrand POISON), Daniel celebrates Donna Dietch's DESERT HEARTS for its queering of the western milieu and strong character work (and also Pedro Almodóvar's queer noir LAW OF DESIRE starring a murderous, smoldering Antonio Banderas), and Brandon makes sure that everyone knows to watch James Ivory's magnetic MAURICE on account of it being his new favorite film (in addition to Jamie Babbit's idiosyncratic, stylish comedy BUT I'M A CHEERLEADER). Happy Pride to our queer family, now and forever. ✊

In this episode, we talk about that “other” show. Star Trek faithfuls have made no qualms about their love of “The Orville”, and how it has managed to capture some of that Star Trek magic. Throw in the vast differences in the tone of Discovery, along with the CBS All-Access paywall, and you have the makings of a true competitor. But how does the show really stand-up?

The franchise continues with the 80-minute (check that out!) follow-up to Richard Linklater's first film. We talk about meta-filmic cinema, how this film is like Berthold Brecht crossed with Arthur Miller, and why the film is a reflection on the process of creating memories. This Week's Watching THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE (2017): Chris McKay, Will Arnett, Zach Galifianakis MOANA (2016): Ron Clements, Auli'i Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson Recommendations DODES'KA-DEN (1970): Akira Kurosawa, Yoshitaka Zushi, Kin Sugai BUT I'M A CHEERLEADER (1999): Jamie Babbit, Natasha Lyonne, Clea Duvall DEAD POETS' SOCIETY (1989): Peter Weir, Robin Williams, Ethan Hawke MARY AND MAX (2009): Adam Elliot, Bethany Whitmore, Toni Collette Footnotes Firstly, an interesting introduction to meta-cinema. Secondly, here are links to the playwrights we mention this week, in an episode that looks more at dramatic than filmic convention. Finally, here are a bunch of articles on the process of creating memories, that seemed particularly pertinent to this week's discussion: 1, 2, 3, and 4.
