This week Terry and Paul continue Hankstober™ with a look at Tom Hanks's first major role in 1982's made for TV film, Mazes and Monsters. A group of four college students take a table top role playing game out into the real world, thinking that it would just make the game more fun. Unfortunately, one of the players starts to blur the line between reality and fantasy...
Joel and Andy are joined by anthropology professor Dr. Wendy Fonarow. Together, they discuss Mazes and Monsters, a made-for-TV movies from the 80s where a thinly-veiled Dungeons and Dragons type RPG makes Tom Hanks go crazy.
We were hoping for some gaudy Satanic Panic nonsense, and instead we get The Paper Chase with a nerdy Tom Hanks in the middle of a very boring psychotic break. Meant to warn against role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons, it's mostly a really dull, rote drama, with nary a demon to be found. Starring Tom Hanks, Christ Makepiece, Wendy Crewson, David Wysocki, and Murray Hamilton. Written by Tom Lazarus from a novel by Rona Jaffe. Directed by Steven Hilliard Stern.
You may not think you know Mazes & Monsters by Rona Jaffe, but you certainly know its 1982 movie adaptation starring Tom Hanks in his first leading role (which you can watch along with us on our Patreon). We wondered if anyone would ever request this book and that day has finally come thanks to our patron Lucek. Thanks for all of your support, Lucek (and for being patient with us when we had to ask you for a second and third choice this year due to some unfortunately timed crossover in our patron requests)! Today's episode is all about D&D and LARPing, plus we wonder about what makes a sexy mouth, rules in 70s dorms, who exactly is named 'Hall', and why we need to know this much about everyone's parents. Despite some real truths and emotional realism in some respects, this story is far too steeped in Satanic Panic nonsense. It's also hard to forget that this book trafficked in sensationalism and profitted off of James Dallas Egbert, III's brief disappearance in 1979 and his eventual tragic death in 1980. Musings and derailments in this episode include: D&Tea and the potency of Many World's Tavern Chamomile, and our personal music and video game updates: Play Gobsmacked! Listen to Blood for the King and Divine Battle from Savage Oath's Divine Battle Listen to Down in the Hollow from Crypt Sermon's The Stygian Rose Remember that if you, too, would like to have us read and review a book of your choice on the show, you can gain that power by joining our Patreon at the appropriate tier.

So fun fact: Tom Hanks began his career with a movie about Dungeons and Dragons. And yet somehow he managed to become Tom Hanks. This week, we dip our toes in the Satanic Panic with this made-for-tv assault against Dungeons and Dragons". Interestingly, it's not the game's alleged connections to the dark arts that we should worry about. Instead, the film focuses on the risks of a mentally-unstable college student (a young Tom Hanks) losing himself in his fictional character. About 40 years ago, there was a full-fledged Dungeons & Dragons panic in the United States of America, and to stoke the flames of pearl-clutching outrage, a novel was written and a TV movie was adapted from that novel, and both of those things were called MAZES AND MONSTERS.Very obviously based on a real-life urban legend and starring a barely post-pubescent Tom Hanks somehow, this thing was made as a naked ratings-grab and ends up being a laughably bad pseudo-time-capsule.Probably gonna Get This Flick Outta Here, but you never know! Episode Introduction Tom Hanks is a true treasure. He's probably the best thing about "Mazes and Monsters," a 1982 television movie about a group of friends who take their roleplaying game a little too far. The movie was made in the period right before Hanks really took off, so he was affordable, but after he'd been in "Bosom Buddies." If this had been made any later, there's no way Hanks would have been in it. ----more---- Anyway. Even though it was made during "The Satanic Panic" and was the adaptation of a wildly sensationalized and factually challenged novel, "Mazes and Monsters" actually manages to be about friends who are trying to be helpful and supportive to one of their own as he's dealing with some severe mental health issues. We dunk on it a little in this episode, but I'll reiterate that it's not a *terrible* movie. Its production is competent and Hanks really shines in it. You can find it on YouTube and it's free with ads. Just be sure to read up on the actual history of the event that inspired it; we talk about it a little toward the end of the episode. Links! We're talking about the movie that fanned a little fire in the early 1980s that would soon become the inferno of the Satanic Panic. To understand how this absolutely terrible movie was ever made and why anyone would ever make a film about a bunch of college kids playing a table top game we have to know a little about two things: Dungeons and Dragons and the Satanic Panic. Mazes and Monsters may have been released in 1982, but the social anxiety that fueled it began to take shape decades earlier. In this episode, the we deep dive into the Satanic Panic of the 1980's, the moral crisis at the center, the casualties on the edges, the dramatic stylings of early Tom Hanks, and the majesty of Englebert Humperdinck.
On this week's annotated deep dive, The Cultists present Steven H Stern's ‘Mazes and Monsters' (1982). On August 15, 1979, James Dallas Egbert disappeared from his college dorm room. Subsequent investigators and the press quickly arrived at one conclusion: the still new and blossoming game Dungeons and Dragons had something, if not everything, to do with it. Fueled by the growing rise of “moral panic” and the mass media conviction in the youth-corrupting power of satan, the true story of Egbert's life was quickly twisted into a cautionary tale of what happens to children who RPG. Capitalizing on the sensational concerns, Mazes and Monsters tells this story—allegedly. Starring Tom Hanks in his first feature film role, this made for TV movie about the psychosis-inducing effects of D&D remains an important historical artifact of 80s moral panic and gaming paranoia. Even if the film itself also remains pretty unwatchable. (Episode annotated topics include: the real story behind Egbert's disappearance; the development history of D&D; the 1980s rise of “satanic panic”; and other subsequent D&D TV portrayals—from The Greatest American Hero's “Wizards and Warlocks” (1983) to Riverdale's “Griffins and Gargoyles” (2019)). Mazes and monsters — oh my! This week, we're talking about the TV movie starring Tom Hanks from 1982. Who knew people were so afraid of Dungeons and Dragons in the '80s that there needed to be an entire made-for-TV movie to encourage kids not to play? Well, my guests, hosts of the Nintendo Cartridge Society (@nincartsociety), Mark Mitchell (@mkemitchell) and Patrick Ehlers (@patrick_ehlers), knew all about it. We have fun talking about the unnecessarily long scenes of Kate screaming out for Daniel, all of Jay Jay's hats, and the mystery of what the two towers could be (*spoiler alert* It's the World Trade Center).
