Halloween 2018 aka Halloween H40 was well received by audiences and critics alike. Upon revisiting 1998's Dimension entry, Halloween H20, I found it unneeded in the Halloween saga of Laurie Strode and Michael Myers. Join host Elias in an exclusive interview with renowned director Roger Kumble as he delves into the depths of his latest film, "Beautiful Disaster." With a profound understanding of the human condition, Kumble skillfully brings to life the multifaceted layers of this enthralling film. Starring the talented duo Dylan Sprouse and Virginia Gardner, "Beautiful Disaster" is a captivating blend of sensuality and adrenaline-fueled action. Based on the beloved novels by Jamie McGuire, this highly anticipated film is set to hit theaters nationwide on Friday, April 21st. Prepare to be captivated by Kumble's artistic vision and immerse yourself in a world where beauty meets chaos. BEAUTIFUL DISASTER centers on college freshman Abby Abernathy, who is eager for a fresh start. However, her plans are quickly derailed when she meets Travis "Mad Dog" Maddox, a bad-boy brawler and campus playboy. Intrigued by Abby's resistance to his charm, Travis offers her a simple bet that makes them roommates for a month-but to their mutual surprise, their arrangement isn't as uncomplicated as it seems. Roger Kumble is an industry veteran of nearly 30 years, having directed nine feature films and many episodes of television series such as JUST FRIENDS, ENTOURAGE, SUITS, PRETTY LITTLE LIARS, REVENGE, and THE GOLDBERGS. His directorial debut CRUEL INTENTIONS was a cultural phenomenon, earning a rare theater adaptation in the 2015 off-Broadway production of Cruel Intentions: The '90s Musical. Prior to BEAUTIFUL DISASTER, Kumble directed the third instalment of the massive hit film series AFTER. AFTER WE COLLIDED was released in 2020 and quickly found itself as one of the biggest international box office successes of the year. Ocena filma Izvirni naslov: Fall Režiser: Scott Mann Nastopajo: Grace Caroline Currey, Virginia Gardner, Jeffrey Dean Morgan Piše: Gaja Poeschl Bere: Mateja Perpar Zgodba najnovejšega vratolomnega trilerja britanskega režiserja in soscenarista Scotta Manna Padec je sprva, milo rečeno, precej klišejska.

The cinematic experience just got that much more intense....On this episode we dive into something that is simple....and absolutely terrifying. In theatres now, lets look at 'Fall'.Best friends Becky and Hunter find themselves at the top of a 2,000-foot radio tower. We'll be the first to admit that on paper....this premise feels overly simplistic and a little silly....but once you get it on to the big screen it's a ride you'll never forget. In advance of the films release today we had the unique pleasure of sitting down with the stars of the film Grace Caroline Currey, Virginia Gardner and co-writer director Scott Mann in two different conversations to talk about the origins of the story, roughing it in the desert with practical effects, the importance of making something truly immersive and so very much more...
Grace Caroline-Currey joins us on the show this week to talk about her newest film, FALL, where she plays Becky, an expert rock climber recovering from a tragic loss, and her best friend Hunter (played by Virginia Gardner) who after a climb gone wrong, are stranded atop a 2000-foot tall abandoned radio tower with no way down and must put their skills to the test in order to survive. Grace talks with us about her audition for the film and how she prepared for the role with her co-star Virginia, as well as how director Scott Mann (Heist) modeled her character after one of his favorite action movie heroines Sarah Connor from The Terminator. FALL is in theatres everywhere August 12th Thanks for tuning in! If you enjoyed the episode, please subscribe to the podcast to never miss an episode!

Tune in as Matt Cole (Debate This!, Avenge This!) takes a seat at the table to chat about Marvel's Runaways, the MCU-adjacent three-season TV show that follows a group of six high schoolers as they learn about a murderous scheme that their seemingly upstanding parents have been committing together for years and proceed to do all they can to thwart it. Having premiered in 2017 on Hulu before ending in 2019, it was promoted as a Marvel Studios property despite never giving nods to Iron Man, Hulk, Infinity Stones, or anything of the sort once (though the Darkhold, which you may recall from WandaVision, does pop up). On top of breaking down this under-the-radar series, the hosts arch their eyebrows at the questionable category of comedy that punches down on activism, comment on the upcoming animated series Marvel's Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, and repeatedly lament how much the show should have lasted one or more seasons. Created by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage (Gossip Girl), Runaways stars Rhenzy Feliz, Lyrica Okano, Virginia Gardner, Ariela Barer, Gregg Sulkin, Allegra Acosta, Annie Wersching, Ryan Sands, Angel Parker, Ever Carradine, James Marsters, Kevin Weisman, Brigid Brannagh, James Yaegashi, Brittany Ishibashi, Elizabeth Hurley, Clarissa Thibeaux, Kip Pardue, and Julian McMahon. Addison Cain starts writing omegaverse fanfic in 2012 while living in Japan. When she moves back to the States she pursues publishing and n 2016 Born to Be Bound was released by Blushing Books, and Cain becomes extremely popular and becomes one of the leading published omegaverse authorsIn 2018 fellow omegaverse author Zoey Ellis publishes Crave To Conquer through Quill Ink Books. It's also doing well and readers are liking it...until Cain's readers start gettng into it and recognizing a llot of similarities and tropes and plot lines when comparing Ellis' book to Cain'sCain goes forth and accuses Ellis of plagiarizing (similar to Serruya/Milan) and a long legal proceeding beginsAfter Cain accuses Ellis, Blushing Books issues DMCA's against Ellis, and all of Ellis' work is withdrawn; Ellis files counternotices, and after a few months her works are resorted; THEN Cain's lawyer's issue threatening letters promising legal action is Ellis doesn't take her work back down. Ellis does not do this, and sues Cain first. In late 2018 Quill Ink files against Blushing Books/Cain in the state of Oklahoma (even though BB/Cain have no relation to that state but is where Ellis' distributor is based); Cain asks for this to be dismissed since she has no business in that state, and after she swears to the judge that she had nothing to do with the hreatening letter sent by her lawyer to Ellis, Cain is dismissed from the OK caseSo Ellis sues Cain in VirginiaThe battle between Quill and BB continues, and Quill's lawyers, in the process of obtaining all the necessary documentation to create a fair case, obtain the correspondence between Cain and BB, which reveals Cain had been the one to pursue the takedown notices, DMCA, and copyright filings...in opposition to her sworn affidavit that she had nothing to do with the whole business (and what she's been posting on her personal social media). Furthermore, Cain has no copyrights filed on her works...In light of this, Ellis and Quill file a motion to judge Cain guilty for civil contempt, perjury and to dismiss this case. Three days later Blushing offers a complete settlement, says Ellis did NOT plagiarize and dismissed the case. Ellis was not awarded any money from her suit because she ran out of funds and her lawyer left before she could fully pursue the case.RWA vs. MilanThe Romance Writer's of America (RWA) is a trade organization for romance writers and was founded by Vivian Stephens and Rita Clay in 1980 who had hoped that RWA would be a professional organization that would help promote, advance and protect romance authorsIn 2018 Courtney Milan was appointed to Chair of the Ethics Board in 2018August 2019 RWA President-Elect Carolyn Jewell tweets about blocking a problematic author they had been in business with; smart people soon realize that this was Sue Grimshaw, former editor and romance buyer for Borders bookstore. Grimshaw's boss and friend Suzan Tisdale, owner of Glenfinnan Publishing, comes out and says that this is nonsense, and Grimshaw " is no more a racist or bigot than I am."Twitter isn't happy (is it ever?), and Milan joins in on the drama session, and rips apart the 1999 book Somewhere Lies the Moon by Kathryn Lynn Davis and its portrayal of half-Chinese women (Milan is half-Chinese herself); there's fallout from this whole situation with Davis claims that she lost her contract, and Tisdale claims that she's having a hard time finding anyone who will work with her now. Tisdale files a complaint against Milan, accusing Milan of harassing behavior, bullying, threatening her career and her business, and threatens legal action if the RWA does not do something about Milan and Milan's social mediaMilan is asked to step down as Chair and she does, although she's upset due to the unclear policies in RWA's bylaws concerning social media practicesThe complaints against Milan are brought to an entirely new Committee Panel, things get weird, people keep recusing themselves, and when the panel finally meets to come to a decision on November 19, 2019, they decide to censure Milan, suspend her membership for one year and put a lifetime ban on ever holding leadership positions again. The Panel's decision is sent to the RWA Board on December 17 but it's lacking a LOT of evidence...including Milan's own statements! Despite the Board asking the Panel for more information and documentation, the Panel (and the Panel's lead, new President Elect Damon Suede) refuse to present more information, saying that the Board just needs to trust the Panel...Then Social Media gets ahold of everything...and THINGS BLOW UPOn Christmas Eve there's an emergency Board meeting and they vote to immediately rescind the ruling against MilanThat's the end of the Milan dispute...but RWA continues to be in hot water. People are withdrawing memberships, authors are pulling books from nominations, agents are refusing to work with RWA, Suede is catching heat for falsifying claims and accreditations, publishers pull out of conventions, and over 3000 members leave. Suede ends up withdrawing from his position, Davis and Tisdale say they only wanted an apology, and RWA unveils a new award in honor of Vivian Stephens in place of the RITA award annnnnd that's...sort of where we're left off at.Books/authors we mention:Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuireBorn to Be Bound by Addison CaineCrave to Conquer by Zoey EllisKennedy RyanJamie McGuireLinks:Maguire/Krumble/Beautiful Disaster"Roger Kumble Movie ‘Beautiful Disaster' Sets Dylan Sprouse, Virginia Gardner & More" (D'Allessandro, 2021)"Racist Jamie McGuire Dragged Again Upon News of Romance Book Adaptation" (Shotwell, 2021)"Jamie McGuire's 'Problematic' Past Turns Fangs Against Beautiful Disaster" (Krishnamurphy, 2021)"What's the Deal with...Jamie McGuire" (Bec&Books, 2020)"Beautiful Disaster Criticised by Fans for Jamie McGuire's Controversial Past" (Sonia, 2021)"Author Jamie McGuire dropped by agency after engaging with Proud Boys and Nazis" (HorrorMaven, 2020)Omegaverse"Copyright: The alpha and the Omega(verse)" (Whipple, 2019a)"Not Walking Away From Omegaverse" (Whipple, 2019b)"The DMCA Is Not a Weapon for Great Justice" (Whipple, 2021)Case 5:18-cv-00920-G Document 6-14 Filed 10/17/18 - Blushing Books emails courtesy Whipple"Into The Omegaverse: How a Fanfic Trope Landed in Federal Court" (Youtube, Ellis, 2020a)"Eyes Wide Open" (Bailey, 2020)"Addison Cain's lawyer e-mailed me, and it only got worse from there" (Youtube, Ellis, 2020b)Courtney Milan Twitter thread re:CainRWA Ethics complaint against Milan by Cain re:Milan's "lack of support""A Feud in Wolf-Kink Erotica Raises a Deep Legal Question" (Alter, 2020)"Drama in the Omegaverse" (Golden Angel, 2019)Ellis' lawyers counternotices against Cain"Join The Fan Fiction Deep State And Watch This Latest Video That Addison Cain Really Doesn't Want You To See" (TechDirt, 2020) Quill Ink Books Limited v. We're (finally) on the eve of Halloween Kills, so it seems only fitting that we take a look back at one of the greatest slashers films in recent memory with David Gordon Green's Halloween from 2018. This movie oozes with style and slick direction, and it's truly one of the best legesequels around. But there's so, so much to talk about (as evidenced by the nearly 3 hour runtime of our episode), so as Hawkins tells Sartain in this film: buckle up. Halloween lover-not-expert JT Kelly returns as we have the important discussions like what brand of peanut butter Michael likes best, what's going on with Gerard Way's toenails, and our pitch for Halloween: Knives Out starring Daniel Craig and…Daniel Craig. Halloween is a 2018 American slasher film directed by David Gordon Green and written by Green, Jeff Fradley, and Danny McBride. It is the eleventh installment in the Halloween film series and a direct sequel to the 1978 film of the same name while effecting a retroactive continuity ('retcon') of all previous sequels.[4] It stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Nick Castle who reprise their respective roles as Laurie Strode and Michael Myers, with stuntman James Jude Courtney also portraying Myers. The film also stars Judy Greer, Andi Matichak, Will Patton, Haluk Bilginer, and Virginia Gardner. Its plot follows a post-traumatic Laurie Strode who prepares to face Michael Myers in a final showdown on Halloween night, forty years after she survived his killing spree. After the release of Rob Zombie's Halloween II, the 2009 sequel to the 2007 remake of the original, two consecutive follow-ups went into development from former rights holder Dimension Films, respectively, but neither achieved fruition. As a result, the studio lost the rights to the intellectual property, which were later obtained by Blumhouse Productions with John Carpenter's involvement. Carpenter, who disagreed with the remake's portrayal of lead killer Michael Myers, planned on helping the studio to make the next Halloween film into what he believed to be more terrifying than the preceding sequels. Filmmakers David Gordon Green and Danny McBride, who were already fans, proposed their vision to Blumhouse and Carpenter. It was accepted and developed into a sequel to the original, with Jamie Lee Curtis and Nick Castle reprising their roles as Strode and Myers, respectively. Halloween was filmed from January to February of 2018 in Charleston, South Carolina before reshoots took place that June. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2018, and was theatrically released in the United States on October 19, 2018, by Universal Pictures, the distributor's first involvement with the series since Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982). The film received generally positive reviews from critics, with many considering it to be both the best Halloween sequel and a return to form for the series, while also receiving particular praise for Curtis' performance. It grossed over $255 million worldwide and is the highest-grossing slasher film in unadjusted dollars, breaking a record that Scream had previously set in 1996 as well as setting several other box-office records. Two sequels, Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends, are scheduled to be released on October 15, 2021 and October 14, 2022 respectively.
To kick off book four, we're checking in on a Brenna fave with a doozy of a hook: Runaways, which features a group of kids who discover their parents are supervillains and set out to stop them. Joe isn't quite as enamoured, in part because the art doesn't sit right with him (leading to a discussion of comic sizing and who the intended audience for this imprint was). Still, there's something laudable about a book that presents a tragic backstory for its characters and then lets them move past it.Less successful is Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage's TV series, which takes ages to get going and mistakenly spends too much time on the parents. While it has a sunny teen vibe and great music, and Rhenzy Feliz and Lyrica Okano are well cast, the show is simply too labourious to get into!Wanna connect with the show? Today we are going to be pitting our favorite superhero teams and solo heroes against one another, and discussing the victors. But first, a little Pop Culture History.POP CULTURE HISTORY - Summer Blockbuster Edition-the 00’s2000 X-Men is released and becomes one of the summers’ top blockbuster films. Trivia: Rebecca Romijn was isolated in a windowless room between takes to keep her look a secret, she endured nine hours of prosthetic makeup application to 60% of her body every day of filming, the contacts were so irritating to her eyes and limiting to her vision that she could only wear them an hour at a time before needing a break. She describes her experience filming this movie as “hell”. Bryan Singer rather infamously was angry that she couldn’t be “more naked” during filming (because he's a toxic douche bro). Also: Hugh Jackman’s testicles got caught in his harness after jumping off the sets Statue of Liberty during filming. OUCH! 2009 X-Men Origins: Wolverine is released and is one of the summer's blockbusters, (though no one knows why). Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds were disappointed with this film (you weren’t the only ones!) Reynolds got a second shot at playing Deadpool when the X-Universe was reset (thank god!) Hugh Jackman was offered the role of Tony Stark/Ironman and turned it down to do this film, so Robert Downey Jr. was cast instead. Magneto and Professor X were going to get origin story films but those were scrapped for X-Men First Class. GEEK OUTSTrish - I’m late to the party again and have just discovered Avatar the Last Airbender on Netflix. This show is so good! Hi everyone! It’s Friday, so it’s time for another Fantastic Fest feature. This week, Andrew Campbell returns with a musically-driven, post-apocalyptic film that reminds me a great deal of THE NIGHT EATS THE WORLD (Episode #372), thematically speaking, anyway. Andrew will be up in a moment to give you his thoughts on today’s movie, but for a few recent reviews of his, check out IN FABRIC (Episode #674), 1917 (Episode #675), and THE DEATH OF DICK LONG (Episode #681). He’s got some absolutely crazy pictures coming up over the next couple of months. Before the review, we’ll have a promo from the Ocho Duro Parlay Hour. Every episode, the ODPH Crew covers a wide variety of topics from sports and popular culture, with a little something for everyone. Contribute at Patreon for exclusive content. Connect with us over social media to continue the conversation. Here we go! ///// > ///// Hello film fans! Andrew here. Back today with the first of two back-to-back Lovecraftian films this week and next. I just so happen to know our host Joseph is huge fan of Lovecraft, particularly the Cthulhu mythos, whereas I have but a passing knowledge of what qualifies a work as being inspired by Lovecraft. When I think of Lovecraft, the themes that come to mind are feelings of unease and depression along with some sort of bizarre cosmic element trying to rip into our world. Plus, monsters. Often really, really big monsters. JOSEPH: "That's interesting, because when I think of Cthulhu, I think [UNINTELLIGIBLE]." Whereas next week’s film is a modern-day adaptation of one of his short stories, this week’s subject is clearly heavily influenced by Lovecraft. Today’s movie is STARFISH, the debut feature film from writer/director A.T. White. A UK/US co-production, STARFISH made its world premiere at the 2018 Fantastic Fest. The film opens with Virginia Gardner as Aubrey, a twenty-something, attending a wake for her best friend, Grace. In her grief, Aubrey leaves early and heads to Grace’s apartment located above a convenience store in what looks like a remote and snowy Colorado town. The apartment is tidy and lived-in and not totally devoid of life, with Grace’s forgotten pet turtle and jellyfish proving her passing was recent and perhaps unexpected. After dozing off, Aubrey awakes to a changed world. The small town appears from her second-floor window to be mostly uninhabited other than a few car fires and the occasional resident sprinting out of view. What unfolds is an introspective meditation on grief along with some inexplicable surprises. The performance by Virginia Gardner is the glue that holds this film together. She owns the screen for all 90 minutes, most without the benefit of any other actors to play off of. She’s emotive and melancholy, but not to the point of being a sad-sack that the audience doesn’t want to hang out with. Strangely, Grace seems to have somehow been aware of some outside alien force trying to penetrate our world. She has left behind for Aubrey a series of audio-tapes in the form of a scavenger hunt and on these tapes is somehow the key to understanding and perhaps stopping whatever alien force is affecting the town and shutting off the world beyond. (They never say what killed Grace. Maybe it was aliens?) Aubrey’s only companion is the occasional voice on the other end of a CB radio, which seems to egg her on whenever she is at a loss. Am I giving away too much of the story? Not really. I’m just talking it out because in the world of STARFISH, it’s never really clear what’s going on. STARFISH starts slow and then slows down a bit more before it starts sprinkling in moments of excitement. You get the occasional creature and some odd bits of grotesquerie that are all really well done in spite of what was likely a micro-budget. The film seems to alternate these little glimpses of horror with dream sequences where Aubrey has conversations with Grace or spends time with a boyfriend on a beach lit by headlights where it’s clear something tragic may have happened. The trailer for STARFISH is worth a watch as it does a good job quickly flipping through some of the more visually arresting scenes in a film full of lush cinematography. STARFISH contains a little bit of everything. The only thing missing is any clear understanding of just what is going on in this nightmarish winter world. What makes STARFISH fantastic? It starts out as a movie about loss and depression, throws in some trippy dream sequences (even becoming a cartoon for a stretch) and ends up as some sort of light survival horror. Even having seen it twice, I still don’t fully understand what conclusions I’m supposed to draw from STARFISH as it’s not clear what is real. Maybe it’s all inside Aubrey’s head? Or maybe some newly awoken monoliths are patrolling the Earth, setting loose their hounds on the remaining populace. Who’s to say.STARFISH is not for everyone, as evidenced by the barrage of one-star reviews on the IMDb page. STARFISH is poetic and hypnotic, meandering and confounding - an enthralling work from a first-time writer/director. Fans of atmospheric, introspective science fiction films such as 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY or UNDER THE SKIN will enjoy STARFISH. Rotten Tomatoes: 90% Metacritic: 74 One Movie Punch: 6.8/10 STARFISH (2018) is not rated and is currently streaming on Amazon Prime. Come back next Friday for COLOR OUT OF SPACE, an adaptation of a Lovecraft short-story getting its first film treatment. Someone decided it was a good idea to spend $12 million dollars on a psychedelic descent into madness starring Nic Cage and it hits the big screen next week. Buckle up, this one is wild. Kathy, Mark and Burk review Al White's beautiful film, STARFISH, which has things we like, and things we didn’t like so much.Kathy talks about the promotion and trailer for the upcoming Mike Flanagan film of a Stephen King novel called DOCTOR SLEEP. We’re pretty hopeful because one of our favorite directors is making another adaptation of a book by one of our favorite writers. We get into THE MATRIX film and the upcoming sequel to the original trilogy, and the Keanu Reeves phenomenon. Burk talks more about black and white film and and 80s film by Francis Ford Coppola called RUMBLE FISH that takes inspiration from the 40s Film Noir style. A.T. White's feature film debut Starfish is a curious, indescribable animal - an intriguing, inscrutable mix of alien invasion thrillers, ennui-soaked indie movies about beautiful sad people listening to beautiful sad songs, and Charlie Kaufman-esque breakdowns of the cinematic medium itself. The story of a young woman (Virginia Gardner) returning to her small town to mourn the death of her close childhood friend (voiced by Christina Masterson amid a series of mixtapes), only to find herself as the last line of defense against an army of interdimensional creatures, Starfish puts on a lot of hats, its juggling of tones and genres part of its curious appeal. It's everything from 10 Cloverfield Lane to Silent Hill to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, wrapped up in an intriguingly experimental (and frequently gorgeous) package. (You can read Gena Radcliffe's review of the film for The Spool here.) To talk about this incredibly difficult-to-describe film, I sat down in-studio with White during his visit to Chicago (it premiered at Facets Cinematheque two weeks ago) to discuss the origins of the project, the ever-changing shapes it took in post-production, and the late friend for whom he made the film in the first place.
