Today on Soundtracker--on a Friday the 13th, no less--I'm talking about Jason Voorhees (and Freddy Krueger) as I continue the Halloween theme with FREDDY VS. JASON. And I'm joined once again by Brett Gallman (@brettgallmam, an expert on the film) of Fangoria, Daily Grindhouse, and Oh, The Horror to talk about it. In this episode, we talk about the incredibly long and complicated road to getting this movie made, talk about our favorite rejected screenplays, explain why we're either Team Freddy or Team Jason, the Kane Hodder controversy, the infamous Kelly Rowland ad-libbed line, and the EXTREMELY 2003 nu-metal soundtrack. Are you frozen? Am I frozen? Despite some technical difficulties we managed to scrape together this wonderful episode with old friend/ Chicago musical maestro Vito Nusret! Vito is responsible for putting many of your favorite Chicago bands on stage through the years and was always your rock when you were too drunk at the show. Dude had everyones' back since day one and for that, we have all the gratitude. Since the times they are a changin', Vito began writing his Movies in a Minute reviews and sharing them on Facebook as a writing exercise. He has since started writing for Daily Grindhouse and Neon Splatter! Not only a Chicago punk rock torch bearer, also a Horror aficionado, our kinda guy! This was a fun talk between friends catching up. Lindsey also weighs in on the film Master. You won't want to miss it! Stay dangerous, friends!
Jessica Scott returns to discuss yet another Shudder exclusive, the glory hole horror film, Glorious. What begins as a film about a sympathetic man trying to work his way through a difficult breakup becomes an often comedic and horrifying examination of a toxic man who thought so highly of himself and so little of his victims that he believed his genitals would save the universe from certain destruction at the hands (tentacles?) of a god older than creation. Oh, also, that god is voiced by J.K. Simmons. Follow Jessica Scott on Twitter @wewhowalkhere Keep up with her work at Film Cred, Daily Grindhouse, SlashFilm, and Nightmarish Conjurings. This week we sit down with Preston Fassel! He's an author and journalist who's written for sites like Fangoria, Rue Morgue, CineDump and is currently the managing editor for Daily Grindhouse! He's also an Ippy Award winning author who's written Our Lady of the Inferno and The Despicable Fantasies of Quentin Sergenov. His latest book is Landis: The Story of a Real Man on 42nd Street about the Sleazoid Express writer who lived a legitimately fascinating life. We were blown away by the knowledge Preston brought on the little known man and hopefully what he shares will have you purchasing the book because it's legit awesome and informative. After discussing his history with horror, a fantastic Scarred for ADULT Life story about Sinister and his creative works, we dig into Beetlejuice (1988). We discuss sand worms, horror homages we missed when we were younger, how *disgusting* Beetlejuice is, the iconic cast, the existential dread of death and so much more. You can get Preston's books anywhere they're sold and here's a link to his latest, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED book, Landis: The Story of a Real Man on 42nd Street. Chunky, bring in the Riley once again! Horror fan, writer, dentist avoider, and co-host of a new spooky podcast (stream The Fright of Your Life everywhere starting October 27!) returns to the court to plead her case for the scariest movie moments, Freddy Krueger's amazing personality, and the ease that goes into a sexy Steve Jobs costume. Nick shares something dramaTEETH (Judgies, where do YOU start flossing every night?). Then, Riley and Jess battle it out in a debate over Group Halloween costumes in a brand new WTV game! Strictly speaking, the Tits and Tats sections get scarier than things that go bump in the night and “no bones days”. We're back after another short hiatus! This week, Daily Grindhouse's Preston Fassel joins us to talk about two films featuring our heroes in erstwhile dysfunctional families: A Love Song for Bobby Long and Matchstick Men! In Love Song for Bobby Long, Travolta plays the titular Southern-fried English professor, a hard-drinking, hard-living man dealing with his itinerant ways in N'Awlins, only to have to grow up when a young girl (Scarlett Johansson, not quite yet playing black widows or Japanese people) shows up to claim the house he's squatting in as hers. Contrast that with Ridley Scott's masterful Matchstick Men, in which Cage fills the tic-filled shoes of a con man struggling with Tourette's and OCD, and what happens when a young girl (Alison Lohman) who may be his daughter comes into his life. One's a sprightly, energetic dramedy with all the power of an actor and director at the top of his game (plus Sam Rockwell dancing!). The other? Well, it's got Travolta saying “pussy” a lot. Take a listen!

Beware the moon, listeners! This week, we're taking a break from the format and covering a one-off movie, and it just happens to be Mike's favorite horror movie of all time: John Landis' An American Werewolf in London. Lindsay needed to take the week off for TIFF, so Mike's brought on a pair of fantastic guests to fill her shoes, KiIll By Kill's Gena Radcliffe joins us to discuss how this movie turned her into a lifelong horror fan, and Daily Grindhouse's Jessica Scott is on board to talk about how much this movie has meant to her over the years. Long time listeners are in for a treat as Mike goes off on why Werewolf is indirectly responsible for his marriage.
We're back, Scaredy Cats! It's time to take on one of the most influential, but also weirdest horror movies of all time, Dario Argento's 1977 classic, Suspiria. It was followed by Inferno in 1980 and The Mother of Tears in 2007. The three movies make up the “The Three Mothers” trilogy which tells the tale of the Mothers of Sorrow, three witches who wreak evil havoc on the world. The narrative of Suspiria is incidental; it's the visuals and the score that make Suspiria the legend that it is. So, grab yourself some red wine, and sit back because this is going to be a wild ride. For this episode, the werewolf squad reunites, but this time it's all about witches. You know that we're going to work some werewolf hijinks into the episode! After sixteen episodes, Nick decided it was time for a little order on this podcast. So he picked the Stepfather franchise for our topic for Episode 17! In this episode, we're reviewing all three movies of the original series as well as the 2009 remake. And we're joined by two very special guests! For the original Stepfather, we had a fantastic time talking to Preston Fassel (managing editor of the Daily Grindhouse and author of Our Lady of the Inferno). Then for the 2009 remake of The Stepfather, we're joined by actor/musician/podcaster Seth Adam Kallick, who starred in a movie we reviewed on our previous episode: Butterfly Kisses. You can order Preston's new novella The Despicable Fantasies of Quentin Sergenov wherever you get your books, and you can find Seth's music at sethadamkallick.bandcamp.com. Hey Scaredy Cats. In our last episode, we started our werewolf tour on the gritty streets of Los Angeles and the remote, rustic getaway known as the Colony. The tour continues as we travel to England, starting out on the mysterious moors before ending up in hustle and bustle of London. We may have talked about it just a bit in our episode on the Howling, but put on a pot of tea, grab your backpack and join us as we take on An American Werewolf In London. The Howling pack is reunited as we are once again joined by werewolf aficionados , Jessica and Brian. Hey Scaredy Cats. The eighties were all about the werewolf movie. You had Teen Wolf, Full Moon High, Teen Wolf Too, The Company of Wolves, and Silver Bullet. There was one year that beat them all. With not one, but three werewolf movies coming out, 1981 was a banner year if you liked to howl at the moon. There was Howlen, An American Werewolf In London and the movie we’re going to talk about today, The Howling. Joining the pack to discuss the Howling are return guests, Jessica and Brian. Jessica has written articles for Film Cred, Nightmarish Conjurings and Grim, has a podcast called Monster Books Podcast, and has a horror comics column on Daily Grindhouse. We're covering a weird, ambitious movie, so it's only fitting that we've got a weird, ambitious episode. Jay Alary from Grumpire and Daily Grindhouse joins The Cast of Cthulhu to discuss Tobe Hooper's Lifeforce, the first of a 3-picture deal and a weird, ambitious failure of a sci-fi film that may have signaled the beginning of the end for Hooper's marketability and dependability as a director. Of course, those 3 pictures were all made for the notorious(ly beloved) low-budget studio, The Cannon Group, so the review can't begin until James takes us down a meaty tour of Cannon's history and reputation from Cannes to Sunday afternoons on WPIX 11. If you're anything like Jim, then you see Lifeforce as a messy, exploitative genre film in which a beloved The X-Files character actor elicits unintentional laughs from portraying the sweatiest, most pathetically love sick astronaut in history. And if you're anything like Jay and James, then that's probably why you love it. And if you're anything like The Space Vampires author Colin Wilson, well...why are you even listening to this? Johnny Donadlson of Daily Grindhouse joins Adrian to discuss the 1990 comedy-horror classic Tremors.
This week editor-in-chief of Daily Grindhouse, Jon Abrams joins us to talk about a movie we feel deserves more love during the October spooky season, the 2018 slasher Hell Fest. Also joining us this week is the writer of this film as well as the scribe of Leatherface & Hulu's YA show Light As A Feather, Seth M Sherman.

This week we're joined by author Alyse Wax (Curious Goods: Behind the Scenes of Friday the 13th The Series; The World of It) and Nathan Smith (Grumpire, Daily Grindhouse) to talk about the nail in the coffin in the original Elm Street series, 1991's Freddy's Dead. Directed by Rachel Talalay, the Final Nightmare looks almost unrecognizable when compared to the early entries as the dark, scary boogeyman has been replaced by something out of a Looney Tunes cartoon. Was this the right direction to go, or had audiences grown tired of Freddy's bad dad jokes by the start of the grunge era?
It's been called "the gayest horror movie of all time" by some, and it's appalling treatment of star Mark Patton in the press by director Jack Sholder and writer David Chaskin has been a source of controversy and criticism since its release. This week we're joined by Jay Alary of Daily Grindhouse and Grumpire & Sam Wineman, director of the upcoming LGBTQ horror documentary for Shudder and the writer/director of award winning short The Quiet Room (available to stream on Shudder now) to talk the history of this film, queer representation in horror, why this might be Freddy at his scariest and whether it not it "breaks" the rules of the franchise. We did it again! This week, there's a transcription of the show notes. Click here to download a copy in PDF. Debbi (01:43): Hi everyone. My guest is the author of the Walt Asher thriller series. He also writes Grindhouse Pulp, which we've gotta talk about. He is an infomercial writer and director. He's also into wild cult movies, making them I believe, and runs a website called Dailygrindhouse.com. My guest today is Andrew Allan. Hi Andrew. Thanks for being here. Andrew (02:11): Hey, Debbi. Thanks for having me. Debbi (02:13): Sure thing. I love your resume. I mean, your bio is just fascinating to me cause I love film as well as books. I assumed that you were an infomercial writer-director before you started writing books. Andrew (02:28): Yes. Yeah. I, my career is a little bit weird in the sense that I went to film school and then I broke into commercials while I was working on developing some movies. And then I ended up getting a job at the home shopping network, which is based here in St. Pete Florida. And it's as bizarre as everyone presumes it is, but it was a really great experience. And I learned how to do a lot of things, including sell on TV and that morphed into doing infomercials, which is selling on TV. So, and I have to say, I love it as ridiculous as it sounds, it's a great profession. Debbi (03:08): I mean, that sounds really cool actually. What made you decide to do infomercials and what prompted you to start writing books? Andrew (03:20): Money prompted me to start doing infomercials. One cause you know, we all need it and we all like it. But the real reason was like I said, I learned to basically sell on television when I was at HSN and that is a natural transition into infomercials. And when I decided to leave HSN, I knew I wanted to make my writing or sorry, make my living still writing and directing and producing commercials. And what was great about infomercials was that it was a niche. So instead of just saying, Hey, I'm a commercial writer and there's 10,000 other people I'm competing with, I decided to be an infomercial writer and you know, there's maybe 10 people I'm competing with, so now I can like authentically say I'm one of the top infomercial writers in the world and I've got a ton of experience and I've done thousands of commercials in the past decade and all that sort of stuff. (04:24) So it's, it's great. And that's how that came to be. The reason I started writing books was because for a number of reasons. One, I was creatively frustrated. I had been making movies and I had been writing screenplays, which were fun. And some of them got made, some of them didn't, but all of them required collaboration. And I had reached a point where I didn't really want to collaborate anymore, at least for a while. I needed a beather and that's even on projects that I absolutely loved. A movie that I was making with my best friend. And even then, like we would get in arguments about it and I just needed a break from that. So I wanted to do something on my own and that's when I decided to write a book, I had a story kind of kicking around that I'd never been able to turn into a script. I was creatively frustrated. I had been making movies and I had been writing screenplays,

This week we look back at what might be the most divisive entry in the whole Friday the 13th series. For the 1st time since the original, Sean Cunningham is back pulling the strings, but what he and director Adam Marcus want from a Jason movie might be much different from what fans expect. We are joined by Mike Vanderbilt of Daily Grindhouse & Jason Parker of http://www.fridaythe13thfranchise.com/ to break down why this movie deserves another look and greater appreciation from fans. For further reading: Enjoy Mike Vanderbilt' spirited defense of the film on DG right here.

Daily Grindhouse film critic Jim Donahue stops by for an all Unknown Movie Challenge show, bringing the 1980 Australian oddity HARLEQUIN (AKA DARK FORCES), starring Jesus of Nazareth as Rasputin, and the guy from BLOW-UP playing a British guy pretending to be an Australian guy pretending to be an American. Basically, it's TROPIC THUNDER disguised as Ziggy Stardust.
From Easy Rider to Forrest Gump and Wayne's World to Woodstock, the legacy of Jimi Hendrix has certainly been aided by the eternal power of cinema. Host Ernest Wilkins is joined by musician and actor Mykele Deville, Daily Grindhouse editor Mike Vanderbilt, and Consequence of Sound Editor-in-Chief Michael Roffman to trace back the lineage of the legend on celluloid. However, that lineage is parallel to a long standing relationship with pop music and film, one that may have been exacerbated by the late axeman himself. To find out, the four step out to enjoy a 30,000 foot view and discuss the larger cultural impact of music in film and how Hendrix’s music itself is interwoven into American culture through iconic movie moments.
Welcome to Primetime, Killers! Along the way, we discuss flooded boiler rooms, debate whether or not Freddy wears sweatpants and near mathematical impossibility that high school teens can achieve mutual orgasms at the same time. Well, here it is, the last episode of 2018! We made it through another year, and helping us across the finish line (albeit limping and far from sober) is our special guest, Mike Vanderbilt. He is a bar tender, assistant editor at The Daily Grindhouse, former member of The Romeros, Modern Day Rippers, and Felon Love; he's also a film maker, a horror movie enthusiast and a first class Malort drinking Jagoff. With him joining in on the journey, we not only point out how Twohy puts inspired twists on genre conventions and has running themes about identity and shifting responsibilities and perspective, but bring up a wealth of other fascinating under-recognized films to check out! Actor Daniel Day-Lewis, a three-time Oscar winner who is often cited as one of the best actors working today, says that PHANTOM THREAD is his final movie. He hasn’t really given a reason why he’s retiring, but I suspect that a “serious artist” such as Daniel Day-Lewis isn’t really interested in playing a villian in the latest Marvel movie, and since that’s mainly what Hollywood is making these days, it’s no wonder he’s thinking about calling the whole thing off. To celebrate, or maybe in honor of Daniel Day Lewis’s performance in PHANTOM THREAD, we’ve decided to do some serious deep dorking out about in first big studio movie, THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS with AJ Muller, writer for Daily Grindhouse and Horrorview. Rundown: In this week’s episode, we talk about the blonde headed stepchild of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor and review the third movie in that series, Thor: Ragnarok. Is this the best movie in the MCU, or another Dark World? Joining us for that is Peter Brown, Associate Editor of Assignment X. Then we welcome AJ Muller, writer for Daily Grindhouse and Horrorview to talk about Netflix’s most recent juggernaut, Stranger Things 2: The Strangening. I may have added to this title. Then we welcome Jeff Bond to talk about Star Trek: Discovery Episode 8. Topic 1: Thor: Ragnarok Review Thor: Ragnarok, the third movie in Marvel’s Thor series and the seventeenth movie in the overall Marvel Cinematic Universe came out Friday. As Marvel is starting to release these comic book epics at a nearly quarterly clip… Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 came out six months ago, Spiderman: Homecoming came out four months ago and Black Panther is coming out three months from now… we will dispense with our usual ‘State of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’ discussion. Rejoining us is best friend of the show, Peter Brown, the Associate Editor of Assignment X and one of our favorite comic book movie thinkers. Topic 2: Stranger Things Season 2 Unless you’ve been trapped in the Upside Down, you know that the second season of STRANGER THINGS dropped on October 27 on Netflix, but we have a no-binge watching rule here on Dorking Out, so we’re talking about the show now. If you don’t know what STRANGER THINGS is, well, welcome back from the Upside Down, and you don’t need to watch the show, because you lived it. Created by the Duffer Brothers, STRANGER THINGS is about four preteen boys in the early 80s who get involved in the mysterious goings-on in their small town in Indiana. It’s a mix of Stephen King, John Carpenter and Steven Spielberg: in other words, it’s got horror, sci-fi and a big helping of nostalgia. Plus, throw in some Gremlins, oh and some Goonies with the addition of Sean Astin to the cast, and Aliens with the addition of Paul Reiser. The Duffer Brothers have said that STRANGER THINGS 2 is more of a sequel than a second season, and I think that comes across. It’s got a little sequelitis - it’s bigger; it’s got more, more, more. Joining us to talk about Stranger Things is Albert Muller, and since all of his friends call him AJ we will be calling him Albert, and he writes for DailyGrindhouse.com and Horrorview. Status Check: Star Trek: Discovery Returning today to talk about Star Trek: Discovery Ep08, "Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum” is my favorite living critic, Jeff Bond. He’s the author of several books, including The Music of Star Trek and The Art of Star Trek: The Kelvin Timeline, as well as a forthcoming book on Seth MacFarlane's The Orville. Ann Turner's 1989 horror/drama Celia is a film that has almost been lost to time. It's a powerful film that stars Rebecca Smart in the titular role of Celia, a young girl who is questioning her place in the world after the death of her grandmother. Touching on themes of communism, politics and the desire to own a rabbit, Celia is a brilliant film that is crying out for rediscovery. With thanks to guest hosts David Hart from Pop Culture Case Study and Anya Novak from AnyaWrites.com and Daily Grindhouse, the film is covered in great detail. Even if you haven't seen the film, I highly recommend giving this one a listen. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week on the Daily Grindhouse Podcast, Jon, Mike & Freeman discuss the controversy surrounding the big-budget remake of 1995's anime classic, GHOST IN THE SHELL. The just released film has come under fire, accused of "white washing" the main character of the original by casting Scarlett Johansson in the part and like everybody else, the Daily Grindhouse team have opinions on this. Is it whitewashing or is it regionalization. Lest you fear that the show has gotten too serious, the boys also dive into 1983's MICROWAVE MASSACRE, MALIBU HIGH, and Macon Blair's directorial debut I DON'T FEEL AT HOME IN THIS WORLD ANYMORE as well as MACROSS and Syfy Network's THE EXPANSE.

Before Robert Downey, Jr. donned the cap and pipe, before Benedict Cumberbatch deduced in the modern world, there was another revival of Sherlock Holmes back in the 1980s. That's why a landscape is so affected by the mood of the person looking at it. In it a person sees his own inner, transitory moments.
