“You're in acting class and you're studying Chekov or ‘Waiting for Godot' -- and then you end up doing 80s tits-and-a**… You caught on pretty quick what it was about and where the power lay.” -- Actress Heather ThomasWhat was it like to be an 80s poster icon and sex symbol? Susan and Sharon welcome The Fall Guy star and “80s Poster Lady” Heather Thomas. She's an actor, writer and activist -- but may be best known for her “Pink Bikini” poster, one of the best-selling pin-up posters of all time. Heather Thomas had leading roles in television shows like BJ and the Bear, The Love Boat and TJ Hooker -- as well as the movie Zapped! with Scott Baio, Willie Aames and Felice Schachter. But her most famous role was playing stuntwoman Jody Banks on the hit 80s television series The Fall Guy. Running for five seasons on ABC, The Fall Guy spawned board games, posters, a video game -- and just last year, a major feature film starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt -- and Heather Thomas! Since her days as a TV star and pin-up queen, Heather Thomas has gone on to an extraordinary career as a novelist, political activist, organizer and fund-raiser. NOTE: This episode was recorded Dec. 2024, before the LA Fires. Our thoughts are with Heather and her family, and all those impacted by the fires. Stay safe. Be well. THE CONVERSATIONWORKING WITH MONKEYS: Clyde, the orangutan from Every Which Way But Loose, was her co-star once: “He thought it was funny to keep grabbing my boob. I thought he was gonna rip it off!” And a stint on BJ and the Bear led to producer Glen Larsen tapping her for the co-starring role in The Fall Guy. WORKING WITH TV PRODUCERS: “All of them are crazy. You're not gonna find any normal ones, not in those days. Everyone was nuts. And they still are.”"Smile more": Early on, the ABC network executives were afraid that Heather Thomas wasn't likable. So they put her in a bikini. “I guess that made up for me not smiling enough.” STUNT WORK: “Lee Majors almost broke my nose once.” "I was good on rollerskates!"In preparation for a Fall Guy episode, Heather trained with the Los Angeles Thunderbirds roller-derby team: “They showed me how to ‘break my back' on the rail -- it was really fun!”Ted Lange -- Isaac, the bartender on The Love Boat -- was one of Heather's favorite directors on the Fall Guy.A GOOD DIRECTOR: For Heather, it was someone who brought her into the filmmaking process. For Lee Majors -- it was anyone who got him home by 5:00pm! THE POSTER: Once the show was a hit, a poster was the next big step: “It outsold Farrah Fawcett. I bought a house. I was thrilled.”DIS-LIKENESS: Heather's image has been hi-jacked and used for everything from lighters, to puzzles, to notebook covers -- to a pillow!ON HAVING A FAMOUS BODY: “My body was my living. That's how I saw it. So I had to feed it, exercise it -- I couldn't have an ounce of cellulite. It was part of the gig. But I didn't care, I was grateful. I was making more money than I ever had in my life. I was a kid.”ZAPPED! -- Teen sex comedy -- or sexual harassment? “They tried to get me topless, but my contract said uh-uh! So, they used a body double. There's a big disclaimer at the end of the movie saying that it's not my tits.”Activism: “Ever since they said, ‘You can't climb the tree, the boys can' -- I was a feminist.”So join Susan and Sharon -- and Heather -- as they talk fly-fishing, Star Wars, David Letterman,Teen Beat, Shaun Cassidy & Parker Stevenson, “Gabor-lore”, Cliff Robertson's toupeé, organizing your phone by decade, not complying in advance -- and canoeing with Henry Winkler!AUDIO-OGRAPHYFind Heather Thomas on Twitter at Twitter.com/HeatherThomasAF And find Heather Thomas on BlueSky at HeatherThomasAF.bsky.social Watch Heather Thomas in The Fall Guy on Peacock, Amazon Prime or Flixfling!Check DontGetPurged.org to make sure your name has not been purged from voter rolls!Find out more about CREW at CitizensForEthics.orgVITAL READINGGet Handbook for A Post-Roe America by Robin Marty at Bookshop.org.Check out Men In Dark Times by Hannah Ahrendt at Bookshop.org.Read Democracy Awakening by Heather Cox Richardson at Bookshop.org.You can also follow Richardson's substack.SUPPORT FOR THE LA FIRESOnline at DisasterAssistance.gov On the FEMA App for mobile devices or Call the FEMA Helpline at 1-800-621-3362Calls are accepted every day from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. PST.More resources at Eaton Canyon Community Relief.Google List of LA County Resources. That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits
Nick takes a look back at the one and only time William Shatner hosted "Saturday Night Live," which aired live on December 20th, 1986, as the Season 12 Christmas episode. The show featured special guests Buster Poindexter, comedian Kevin Meaney, and musical guest Lone Justice. At the time, Shatner was riding high on the success of the latest "Star Trek" film and his hit TV series "TJ Hooker," both of which were hilariously satirized on the show that night. In this episode, you'll hear about the funny parodies of "Star Trek" and "TJ Hooker," plus behind-the-scenes stories from that memorable night. Nick also highlights other hilarious sketches, including Jan Hooks' and Nora Dunn's fantastic Sweeney Sisters, Al Franken's uproarious health report on Ronald Reagan, and the most talked-about (and controversial) sketch of the night—where Shatner, playing himself, verbally massacres fans at a "Star Trek" Convention, delivering the now-famous line, "Get a life, you people!" This sketch not only re-sparked national interest in SNL but also made headlines, cementing itself as one of the funniest and most iconic moments in the show's history. [Ep89]

Larson, the history of TV Guide, TV/Radio Times, smoking, Christmas Cigarettes for children, the golden age of "Kids Gone Wild" media, Terrorism on TV, Posh Families, the TV Guide Empire, Kirstie Allie as Gloria Steinem as a Playboy Bunny, being completely confused and perplexed by the TV Guide listings, The Young Ones, US vs UK news, visiting NYC with your Dad, how low it took for the UK to get movies from the US, Christmas movie premiers, James Bond, teenage mini bar raids of beer, how everyone in America seemed rich, ET, the mind blowing concept of pizza delivery, The Damned, boredom, recovering from addiction, The A-Team, how prime time action shows in the US were for children in the UK. 70s UK sci-fi shows, Day of the Triffids, Tripods, The Day After vs. Threads, reassessing Reagan, the horrors of Thatcher, TJ Hooker, Starsky and Hutch, Kojak, sleazy cops, grim 70s cinema, the delusional positivity of 1980s pop culture, time investment, how amazing Sesame St is and was, how TV can help kids, Jim Henson, The Atomic Testing Museum, having a near death experience, Rockford Files, Dukes of Hazard, war games, being judged by your parents, low culture vs high culture, 60s movies in the 80s, how class effects how you view commercials, loving Harold Lloyd, and how TV was the center of the family.
First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on July 2nd 2023 This week I really wanted to talk about some TV CHEESE, by which I mean the sort of television that can become anybody's guilty pleasure, even if they might never want to fess up to watching it, or the sort of television that's so bad it's actually quite good, or, at the very least, enjoyable. Old curmudgeons like myself, of course, might like to bang on about how that's pretty much everything that comes on our screens now, especially in the name of light entertainment, but I don't think that's quite what I meant either. There are some shows which have reputations that precede them, shows the mere mention of which can cause people to roll their eyes in mock (or genuine) horror, and wonder why on earth anyone would want to watch them, and yet, when you do watch them, still prove to be satisfying half or full hours of viewing when you take the time to. Unsurprisingly, several American series from the 1970s and eighties do tend to fall into this category. Shows like THE WALTONS, CHARLIE'S ANGELS, TJ HOOKER, THE DUKES OF HAZZARD, and HAPPY DAYS can be mercilessly mocked and shunned by the classic TV watching community, alongside such bonkers BRITISH TV series like BONEKICKERS, BUGS or CATS EYES, and SF shows like BUCK ROGERS IN THE 25TH CENTURY, the original BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and its sequel GALACTICA 1980, and plain afternoon romantic nonsense like THE LOVE BOAT. So, in order to put us on the launch pad for covering some of the lesser-loved classic TV shows from time-to-time on VISION ON SOUND, WARREN CUMMINGS joined me for a wild hour just musing over some of the very worst contenders for qualifying as genuine TV cheese. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.
Andre Gower had had a hell of a career. You probably know him best as Sean from the 1987 classic The Monster Squad. But guess what? He's also done The A-Team, Knight Rider, TJ Hooker, Mr. Belvedere and tons of other Fanacek favorites. So, in an effort to celebrate Andre, I take a deep dive into his career and credits. Along the way I also touch on my brief addiction to The Young and the Restless, the crazy rape scene in Straw Dogs, my anger over the cancellation of I'm Dying Up Here, and not to brag, but I make three different Terminator references. I'm an artist.

William Shatner has gone from actor to being a cultural icon. He is ubiquitous in pop culture. He shares fascinating, funny, behind-the-scenes stories about getting his start in acting in Canada, what it was like working in the early days of LIVE television in New York in the 50s. Shatner talks about his relationship with Leonard Nimoy and how they first met, has great advice for young actors and why he thinks he's had such longevity in show business. An absolutely riveting conversation with this larger than life man.

Written by Quentin Tarantino and directed by Tony Scott, True Romance is everything we love about the lawless ass 90s. It's unapologetically profane and violent, more than a bit dated, but also utterly rewatchable. This is due in large part to its incredible cast. From Gary Oldman as Rastafarian pimp Drexl, to a pre-Sopranos James Gandolfini as mafia heavy Virgil, to Brad Pitt as stoner Floyd, this movie is overflowing with stars in the making. And those three are barely even in it. That's how incredible this cast is. Christian Slater, who stars as Clarence Worley, and Patricia Arquette, who plays his love interest Alabama, are surrounded by top-tier performances. From the opening, you could probably also guess that True Romance is exceptionally written and confidently directed. Thus, despite some of its more cringeworthy (i.e. offensive) sensibilities, this is a stroll down 90s memory lane worth taking. Shockingly, though, even with strong reviews, True Romance flopped. It grossed just over $13 million on a budget of $12.5 million. Imaginary Elvis (Val Kilmer) does not approve. Now, sit back, casually sip a Narwhal Imperial Stout from Sierra Nevada, and enjoy the Sonny Chiba marathon! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Chumpzilla, and Capt. Cash are auditioning for the TJ Hooker revival. Wish us luck! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – Not since Bonnie and Clyde have two people been so good at being bad! (00:00) Lingering Questions – After a word from our brothers in beer at Hop Nation USA, we discuss our favorite performances and scenes from True Romance. (33:51) The "White Boy Day" Trivia Challenge – The Double Turn Podcast tags in, and then Chumpzilla challenges the field to trivia about the movie. (1:06:57) Recommendations – We offer our picks for the week and next up: We continue "Hops and Heartthrob Flops" with Scott Bakula's 90s masterpiece Necessary Roughness! In her role of “Sheila Carter,” Brown debuted on The Young and the Restless in 1990 and crossed over to The Bold and the Beautiful in 1992. For the next three decades, Brown has played “Sheila Carter” on both shows. Brown's recent credits include the film Five Hour Friends, co-starring Tom Sizemore, American Hero, and the award-winning short The Necklace. Brown guest-starred on many episodic prime-time television serials, including Matt Houston, TJ Hooker, Diagnosis Murder, and Six Feet Under. It's a very special occasion today on Soundtracker, as the show is officially 1 year old. Joining me to help celebrate are Eric Szyszka (@ericszyszka) and Chris Cabin (@crabin) of the excellent We Hate Movies podcast (@WHMpodcast), and we're talking about 1996's much-maligned attempt to turn Pamela Anderson into an action star, BARB WIRE. In this episode we all agree that this movie isn't as bad as its reputation, talk about what it got right, what it got wrong, the incredible supporting cast, which includes Temuera Morrison, Clint Howard, Steve Railsback, Jack Noseworthy, and Udo Kier. We also discuss the incredibly awful Tommy Lee song, and the rest of the very hit or miss soundtrack. Don't call us babe. But do listen to this episode. It's a live outside recording today! We're at Bill's and he's fresh off some serious R&R (Hawaii and Ween). Ice Cream Truck of the Week: Vape pens. Kelley has weird self imposed cheapskate rules. Biopics are all hokey! Mary watched RRR and she liked it…A LOT! What time of day should Kelley watch this long ass movie? Kelley again recommends Russion Doll with Natasha Lyonne. And the time travel movie Primer comes up again as a recommendation, along with Time Crimes. And Outlander. Fanny Packs are back! We talk about Ross and the show starts to fall apart. Bill had a great security guard experience at Ween. A Ross Schaefer joke that Bill can't forget. Mary has a story about chips, and a customer service nightmare experience. We can't stop talking about local stores (I actually for real cut some out today, Nutballs). Bill is hooked on TJ Hooker. Bill is getting into the Phoney Call-y podcast. Kelley's Hint List! Remove white spots on shellacked floors. Clean your plaster décor with starch and water. We read a complicated Damask and dirndl and salt bag hint. The plastic situation is a losing battle. Seattle Pride Parade recap – Mary still loves Dykes on Bikes. Kelley had a rare opportunity where riding the monorail made sense. Umpire Pants Out!

Come in and know me better, Co-nan! It's Day 16 of the 25 Days of A Christmas Carol and today Santa's sleigh is making it's first (but not last) stop to the Hallmark Channel and the endless drivel that they wrap around the bones of the classic Dickens tale. Only four months after the premiere of the daytime talk show Ellen, Hallmark presented a Christmas Carol about a rotten daytime talk show host who is visited by Gary Coleman, William Shatner, and absolutely in know way James Cromwell. It's a real drag but fortunately my old buddies from my Conan internship days and accomplished podcasters themselves, Eric Szyszka from We Hate Movie and his podcast partner Ben Worcester from their TJ Hooker rewatch podcast, Hooked on TJ Hooker were willing to reunite with your boy, me, and talk about this monstrosity and reminisce about our time at 30 Rock! Miri was the eighth episode of Star Trek's debut season to air, with a duplicate earth populated by feral children leading the senior staff of the Enterprise to contract a fatal illness. In this episode Gerry and Iain take a look at creepy kids, speedy science and the level of irritation caused by a simple bunk bunk bunking. On a planet exactly like Earth (exactly like it) the Enterprise crew follow an automated distress signal to a seemingly uninhabited town. After finding Miri (Kim Darby) hiding in a closet, they learn the local children are alive but uncared for. As a result, the children have formed a rudimentary social order under the questionable leadership of a kid called Jahn (Michael J. Pollard) with military guidance from a child who lives to bunkbunkbunk (John Megna). McCoy and Spock work to find a cure for a terrible illness that wiped out local adult life and threatens the children and the ship's crew as well. A number of the children in this episode were played by the kids of the main cast and crew. Miri was directed by Vincent McEveety and was written by Adrian Spies. McEveety went on to direct Dagger of the Mind - the following episode - and four further installments. Spies did not write any more Star Trek, but did later pen an episode of TJ Hooker which also featured William Shatner. In this episode Gerry and Iain considered why the duplicate Earth was not subject to more scrutiny and examined what it was about this episode that made it unsuitable for British audiences in the 70s and 80s. The discussion continues in the comments below and please keep in touch with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram where we're @trekpodcast. You can listen to the show here on the website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, Pocket Casts, TuneIn, Stitcher, Google or wherever you find your podcasts. Miri was released in 1966. It is 50 minutes long and originally aired on the NBC network. It can be viewed on CBS All Access in the United states, Netflix in the UK and is available on DVD and Blu Ray in other countries, including a comprehensive remastered set of all three seasons released by Paramount Home Entertainment.

Today previous podcast guest Heather Dobson joins me once again; in our last conversation we discussed life, chasing ghosts, and some of her more astonishing experiences with Paranormal Georgia Investigators. This time around, Heather and I examine our writing processes; she poured a lot of herself into her book, Memoirs of a Future Ghost, we talk at length about the therapeutic process of spilling your guts out onto the page for both non-fiction and fiction stories. Heather tells me how writing her memoir was therapeutic for her (2:05), we discuss how there's always some nugget of truth in every book--even fiction (4:37), why we both disguise some real life characters in our writing (11:49), how we're constantly learning--especially through bad experiences (17:05), why we both thrive on alone time as writers (19:55), how eating chocolate and watching 80s TV--especially TJ Hooker--helps Heather cope with writing about tough subjects (22:25), we discuss some of our favorite memoirs we read and why Heather is obsessed with British royals (23:20), and we offer up some advice for aspiring authors (31:54) including the reality that its perfectly ok to suck (34:33)! Learn all about Heather Dobson and get your signed copy of Memoirs of a Future Ghost, find her here: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and her website and Paranormal Georgia Investigators. TJ Hooker. S03 E03. Chinatown. Air date October 8, 1983. This week tired of old sitcom tropes Levi and Brendan explore some different ones in this bonkers police drama.
On November 29, 2018, 50 year old Andrew Bush of College Station, Texas was driving his white Dodge Charger. Up ahead was a red light. Cars were stopped, waiting for the light to change, and one of those vehicles was a Ford pickup truck in the left turn lane. Witnesses say Bush didn’t even brake before slamming into the back of that truck. The driver of the pickup truck was 20 year old Zane Wallace, a Texas A&M college student, who was with his girlfriend Mackenzie. They were shaken up but not seriously injured. Zane got out of the truck to check on the driver of the car that just hit them. And that’s where our story today really begins. Zane had a day he’ll never forget. As you listen to my conversation with Zane, I think you’ll get the same impression I did when we were talking. He’s a good kid, very polite and respectful. And throughout this whole ordeal, his concern was not for himself, even though it was his life that was in danger that day. Instead, he was concerned for the safety of his girlfriend, and the welfare of the driver of the car that hit them. I like Zane and I think he has a great future ahead of him. The incident that Zane told me about was caught on video by someone nearby who happened to think quickly and hit “record” on his phone. This is his video: https://youtu.be/qTpd4_kjofk Also, at the beginning of the episode, I mentioned a Saturday Night Live parody sketch that poked fun at the old TJ Hooker show, which starred William Shatner. Here’s that video: https://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/tj-hooker/n9514 And if you don’t already follow me on Instagram, you really should. I post something new there every day, @WhatWasThatLike.
The crew is here, and today we talk about Quentin's Odyssey. No, not that one.Not that one either.I'll give you a hint: he didn't direct it.Neither did Stone or Rodriguez.Sam, Asher, and Chad discuss the quintessential 90s gem "True Romance," directed by Ridley Scott's late-brother Tony, and starring the guy from "Heathers" and Patricia Arquette. As we follow this hero's journey of sorts, a who's who of soon to be 90s stars populate the proceeding sequences that culminate to the film's climax. Get ready for Walken v Hopper, Gandolfini v Arquette, Slater v hamburgers, and self image issues personifying themselves into a hallucination of Elvis Presley. Also I'm pretty sure Clarence wanted to have sex with it.So if a Sonny Chiba triple feature sounds like your cup of tea, get your "TJ Hooker" sides ready cause we got a pod to cast.Follow us on Twitter:Movie Night Autopsy SamChadJon

On this week's episode, the Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza rolls on as the gang welcomes friend of the show—and Hooked on TJ Hooker co-host—Ben Worcester to chat about the sad, short, and cheap sequel, Jurassic Park III! Why couldn't they entice Laura Dern to play a larger role in the film? Why does this sequel also start with rich people getting lost on the island? And bring on the proud Jurassic Park tradition of getting elbow-deep in dino-doo! PLUS: Alexander Payne's movies, but with dinosaurs instead of famous celebs! Jurassic Park III stars Sam Neill, William H. Macy, Téa Leoni, Alessandro Nivola, Trevor Morgan, Michael Jeter, John Diehl, and Laura Dern; directed by Joe Johnston.
