For the third month of 1995, the boys are looking to tip the scales with their latest film! There's been a mysterious death on a miniature Maine island - the elderly woman's caretaker (Kathy Bates) is the most likely suspect. The local constable (Christopher Plummer) is convinced she's done it, based entirely on his suspicion over the equally mysterious death of her husband (David Strathairn) twenty years prior. The only thing that might save her is the return of her daughter (Jennifer Jason Leigh), who just might be the key to both the past and presents. Whether this new death eclipses the earlier one, it's up to us to discover the true nature of.….Dolores Claiborne!
Geilomat!

Book Vs. Movie: Dolores Claiborne 1992 Novel Vs. the 1995 MovieThe Margos delve back to the Stephen King well (pun intended!) with Dolores Claiborne, a gripping narrative of survival, domestic abuse, and hidden truths. Originally penned in 1992 and later brought to life on the silver screen in 1995, this story has held audiences spellbound in its literary and cinematic forms. Gorry! We plan our deaths as we eat cabbage, sausages, a plate of charcuterie, and drink some Scotch before discussing Dolores Claiborne. With impressive dialogue and a truly evil antagonist, this film takes us on a journey of discovery that we relish. As one year bleeds into the next, we look forward to growing old together. Sometimes dinner with a movie is all we have to hold on to.
Dolores Claiborne is a 1995 American psychological thriller drama film directed by Taylor Hackford and starring Kathy Bates, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Christopher Plummer, and David Strathairn. The screenplay by Tony Gilroy is based on the 1992 novel of the same name by Stephen King. The film's score was written by Danny Elfman. The plot focuses on the strained relationship between a mother and her daughter, largely told through flashbacks, after her daughter arrives to her remote hometown on a Maine island where her mother has been accused of murdering the elderly woman for whom she had long been a care-provider and companion. Dolores Claiborne was the second major King film adaptation to star Bates in a leading role after Misery five years earlier. Kathy Bates stated in a retrospective interview that her performance as the titular Dolores was her favorite performance she had ever given. Beth is joined by guest host Marty Kady, Politics Editor for TheMessenger.com as we cover Oliver Stone's star-studded and provocative magnum opus about the JFK assassination. Nov. 22, 2023 marks the 60th anniversary of the fateful day in Dallas that has left an indelible mark on the memory of a generation, and the assassination and subsequent investigation has had a lingering and deleterious effect creating doubt, and lack of faith in the social and political institutions of our American community—a lack of faith, and a chasm of distrust that seems to have only grown wider and deeper in the past 6 decades (sometimes to the delight of different sectors of the American community). The pod also thanks guest Mona Tobey (Salt of the Earth, former denizen of Maine) for joining us once again for this episode. You might remember her from our “Dolores Claiborne” episode. Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we discuss a character actress, multiple Oscar nominee (and winner) and living legend who is still somehow underrated: Kathy “Bobo” Bates! Our B-Sides today are: A Home of Our Own, Dolores Claiborne, Love Liza, and Richard Jewell. The actress made her bones in the theater, originating roles in iconic stuff such as ‘Night Mother and Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean. Our guest is Billy Ray Brewton, host of the superb The Incinerator Podcast, the Movie Mixtapes podcast, and the Center Clueless podcast. Brewton is also the Festival Director/Lead Programmer of Make Believe Seattle. We talk to Brewton about why Bates is his favorite working actress, her innate Southern charm, her late break into movies, her essential performance in Dolores Claiborne, and why Fried Green Tomatoes is so important to the state of Alabama. Additional fun tidbits include: the strange career of A Home of Our Own director Tony Bill, the underrated Bates-led TV show Harry's Law, the exciting acting Oscar wins that happened in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, and some of Bates' other B-Sides (Angus, Primary Colors, Bonneville). This underrated Stephen King book was adapted into a movie starring Kathy Bates and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Even though we get great performances, there is something lacking and some changes made which cause me to not like the movie as much as the book. This week Derry Public Radio continues their 2022 Patreon Selection Series with Michelle Devan's pick “Dolores Claiborne”. Join in as we discuss the tension Selena's story brings, the intensity of the hatchet scene, the super cop on the case, how the movie restructures the plot points, the power Vera brings to her scenes, the stylized look of the eclipse, the scenes of violence, telling two different stories from the same source material, the Selena remembering scene, and the feelings we're left with about the end. We do what we must and we must listen to Episode 106, “Effectively Abraised”.
Celluloid Pudding: Movies. Film. Discussions. Laughter. History. Carrying on.
Please join us for one of our rawest discussions yet. We went light on the editing and kept it real. We also have an interview Beth conducted with the fantastic Mona—a native of Maine—who provides us with terrific insights about the era in which she grew up, her memories of Stephen King, and some of the linguistic and cultural idiosyncrasies of the great state of Maine. Thank you, Mona! End song ‘Prayer for Ukraine' performed by Endpin Project Cello Choir. Composed by Mykola Lysenko.
Mary returns to talk with Caitlin about Stephen King's Dolores Claiborne. God damn, do we love Kathy Bates! She's the best, and we think more people should know about this great movie. Be sure to stick around for the awesome bumper Mary made for the show, and also consider checking out (and donating to) RAINN.org.
