BW - EP130—009: Philip Marlowe Comes To Radio—Marlowe Leaves NBC, But CBS Picks It Up

In September, Bob Hope reclaimed his Tuesday night time slot and NBC's Philip Marlowe radio adventures were over. 1947 was a good year for Van Heflin. Green Dolphin Street hit theaters in November. It co-starred Lana Turner and was that year's biggest MGM hit. On Thanksgiving he guest-starred on an episode of Radio Reader's Digest called “Why Keep Your Heart In Cold Storage?” It was well-received, but MGM would no longer allow Heflin to play Marlowe. He continued to appear on radio into the 1950s. A new Hollywood agent, Ray Stark, went to work for Chandler in 1948, and in September, a revived Philip Marlowe series began a two-year run on CBS, this time starring Gerald Mohr. Mohr played King Leopardi in the summer series' version of “The King in Yellow.” He'd done movie work, but his face was unknown to most radio listeners. Chandler preferred his voice, which he thought packed more punch. Norman Macdonnell was in charge of the production. Chandler made a list of suggestions for the show's writers: Don't always let Marlowe have the last word. Don't make him utter knee-jerk wisecracks. Don't let him gloat. For the most part, Mohr's Marlowe always got the last word, added quick-one liners, and gloated. CBS paid Chandler two-hundred fifty dollars per week, roughly 3K today. That amount was raised to four-hundred if the series found a sponsor, which it briefly did, with both Wrigley's Spearmint Gum and Ford. On CBS Marlowe took up the commercial slack with product-placement. Cars were Nash's. Gas Stations pumped Mobile. Phil reached for Johnny Walker and Lifesavers candy. As he drove around L.A. he found a handy way to keep track of addresses: Their proximity to an Arthur Murray Dance Studio. Even Chandler got a plug In “The Hairpin Turn.” On April 11th, 1950, William Conrad subbed for Gerald Mohr. Sometime around 1950, head of CBS William Paley said the network should develop a “Philip Marlowe in the Old West” – a no-nonsense, tough-as-nails frontier saga unlike any cowboy show ever heard. The show would be called Gunsmoke and debut in 1952 starring William Conrad. It was directed by Norman Macdonnell and generally considered the best radio Western of all time. The Adventures of Philip Marlowe was canceled in September of 1950, but revived the following July for a summer run. The final CBS Philip Marlowe Adventure was on September 15th, 1951.

Mr. President first signed on June 26th, 1947. Producers picked Arnold to star because his voice had the “aggressiveness of Teddy Roosevelt, the humility of Abraham Lincoln, and the tenacity of Andrew Jackson.” Listeners were challenged to guess the president's identity before it was revealed at the end. Fittingly the 1947 Thanksgiving episode featured a tale from the life of George Washington. Opposite Mr. President, live from Hollywood over all CBS stations Radio Reader's Digest signed on, guest-starring Van Heflin. 1947 was a good year for the thirty-eight year-old actor. That summer he co-starred with Joan Crawford in Possessed and brought Philip Marlowe to radio as a summer replacement for Bob Hope. His latest film, Green Dolphin Street, just hit theaters. It co-starred Lana Turner and was that year's biggest MGM hit. Radio Reader's Digest debuted on September 13th, 1942 on CBS. The famed magazine actually didn't sponsor the show. There are so many important conversations that need to happen, especially now. But not everyone is willing to truly listen. And the ones who are willing, may not be listening to you fully. How can we change that?In today's episode of The Frame of Mind Coaching™ Podcast, Kellie Green, CEO at Green Dolphin Street, an organization that provides workshops, training sessions and talks on customer service, sexual harassment, diversity and inclusion, brings her challenge to the table.Kellie's problem is that she feels she's not able to reach out to people. What she means is that she offers these courses, and most companies are not taking them because they already have in-house departments taking care of these conversations.  But Kellie feels like they're failing at it, and doesn't know how to get them to realize the benefits of her programs...From my point of view, the issue here is that Kellie is offering her company's services to people who are not actually interested. And my advice to her is to stop trying to sell cookies to people on diets! What I mean by that is that she should try looking for people and companies in need of those courses and conversations, instead of knocking on every single door hoping for success.Sit back, relax and enjoy this conversation!https://www.frameofmindcoaching.com/the-frame-of-mind-coaching-podcastRead the episode's transcript here:https://www.buzzsprout.com/1252997/episodes/9428274Have you found yourself selling cookies to people on diets? Instead, they discuss how the show makes them feel and what it reveals about the relationship between one human being and another. Magic, wolves, self-identity, and the communal experience all make an appearance. My guest for The Happy Hour #217 is JJ Heller. JJ is a singer/songwriter committed to spreading a message of hope and peace to women in an increasingly complex, competitive and confusing world. JJ has developed an iconic and unmistakable style of her own, and her music inspires listeners to embrace the beauty and brokenness of life with a whole heart. JJ and her husband Dave reside in Nashville with their two daughters. JJ and I start off the show talking about comparison. Friends, we all do it and we all know we need to stop! God gave JJ a new perspective to consider when the internal comparison talk starts, and it's something we can all remember and use. JJ then shares how the life and dreams she had as an athlete suddenly came to a close. Feeling unsure of what was next for her, God planted the seed in her heart for music while she was singing a song washing dishes in the bush of Africa! JJ then opens up about suffering from panic attacks and anxiety. JJ speaks about how it was difficult to share her story, but God nudged her to use her voice - and in a big way! She speaks about the freedom she felt after telling her story, and you will absolutely love hearing the many ways she has seen God use her story of brokenness to bring healing to others. In the last part of the show, we hear more about JJ's music and how a conversation with Bob Goff (yes, THE Bob Goff), changed her view on what success looks like. Friends, I absolutely loved talking with JJ and could have talked with her for hours. If you are struggling with fear and anxiety, my hope is that you heard that you are not alone, and that God can bring healing and use our brokenness for good. I also hope you feel encouraged to share your story with a trusted friend and together we can support each other on our journeys. {You can listen to the show HERE, and make sure you never miss a Happy Hour, subscribe using your favorite podcast app (ie. iTunes, Google Play).  And of course, I would love if you would share with your friends!} Links from the Show JJ's Website Your Hands (song) JJ's New Album: I Dream of You (Volume II) (save this link! - it releases November 2) JJ's Blog Post "You're Not Going Crazy" I Dream of You Album What JJ is reading: Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes, Green Dolphin Street by Elizabeth Goudge, Road Back to You by Ian Cron and Suzanne Stabile Connect with JJ Facebook // Twitter // Instagram Connect with Jamie + The Happy Hour Facebook // Twitter // Instagram // YouTube Want to stay connected to The Happy Hour? Subscribe to The Happy Hour Newsletter! In 2009 she formed a PR company called KG Music Press to help spread the word about L.A.'s underground country community in a manner honest enough to honor the genre's unpretentious forebears. But Grant's highest profile vehicle for promoting the extensive number of top-notch roots music artists in Southern California is an ongoing Sunday evening concert series at The Echo affectionately named The Grand Ole Echo. The 7th season of this weekly event runs through September 30th, 2012, is packed with excellent music and admission is free.
