After learning about the amazing work of my guest this week, I had an idea that I wanted to test out. Perhaps our current obsession with Large Language Models is revealing of our historic obsession with a narrow cognitivist view of how human learning happens (and, therefore, how schooling is structured)?!Memorise the largest possible bank of static data and then output plausible propositions, in response to prompts from a teacher or a standardised exam! Obviously that's a bit of an unfair caricature of the industrial schooling system, but also not a million miles from the truth! As you will have seen from my explorations over the last few years in episodes on ecological psychology, play, movement, active inference and 4E cognitive science, I believe that there is an emerging understanding of how radically embodied and embedded in place and in relationships human learning is actually is. So that's why I was so excited to learn about a vastly different approach to artificial intelligence that is based on a sensorimotor learning framework and Jeff Hawkin's Thousand Brains theory of the neocortex. Dr Viviane Clay is Executive Director of the Thousand Brains Project and a scientist with years of experience in neuroscience, AI and machine learning. She has a PhD in Cognitive Computing. The Thousand Brains Project grew out of decades of research at Numenta, a leading company in neuroscience-based AI technology, and is developing Monty, a new type of artificial intelligence based on the sensorimotor principles observed in the brain. Numenta's co-founder Jeff Hawkins is Research Advisor and Board Member of the Thousand Brains Project. You can find links to additional information about Monty and the Thousand Brains Project below:https://thousandbrains.org/ https://linktr.ee/1000brainsproj2 page overview: https://thousandbrains.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/TBP_Overview.pdfhttps://www.youtube.com/@thousandbrainsproject
In this episode we delve into the rapidly evolving field of digital Holocaust historiography, exploring how digital tools and artificial intelligence are reshaping the way we research, remember, and engage with Holocaust memory. Join us for an insightful conversation with Dr. Tobias Ebbrecht-Hartmann, Associate Professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and Dr. Alina Bothe, Project Director and Principal Investigator of the initiative #LastSeen – Pictures of Nazi Deportations. We begin by examining the theoretical foundations of digital Holocaust historiography, discussing what it means to treat historical sources as interactive, curated digital objects, and exploring the ethical considerations that accompany this digital transformation. Then, we highlight groundbreaking projects such as VHH – Visual History of the Holocaust, #LastSeen, and Memorise, revealing how annotation, immersive testimonies, and spatial reconstruction bring new dimensions to historical memory. Our guests then reflect on the broader implications of these technologies, addressing the methodological, ethical, and historiographical challenges of interpreting sensitive historical materials in digital environments. Finally, we discuss the collaborative nature of interdisciplinary research, sharing personal insights and practical advice for scholars navigating this exciting and complex new terrain.
“… everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evildoers and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Tim 3:12-17)This is Paul writing to his younger friend and fellow minister of the Gospel, Timothy. A few verses later he adds, “Preach the word!” In other words … You have learned the truth, Timothy. You are convinced of it. You have known the Holy Scriptures since you were young. They led you to salvation, they birthed faith in your heart, they drew you to Jesus. The Scriptures come from the very mouth of God, they are literally God-breathed and are powerful for teaching, refuting error, training, forming righteousness in you and in every hungry soul. They are more than enough to prepare you for service. The Scriptures will equip you. No! More than that, you will be thoroughly equipped for every good work. The Scriptures are God's Word. Preach the Word, Timothy! Memorise it, soak it up, then speak it out. Give it away! Be generous with God's Word. The are many ways to preach God's Word and you don't need to be a trained professional to do it. The Greek word translated as “preach” simply means to “to proclaim, to tell”, but with an urgency wanting others to accept the message. Proclaiming the Gospel is not the same as suggesting a good idea, rather it challenges the mind, convicts the heart and demands a response. And it doesn't need a platform or a gifted orator to do its work. God's Word can unleash its power one friend to another. It can enter the heart of a stranger on the train, and it can slowly grow and create brand new baby-like faith in that relative you have been praying for since you don't know when. Because the Scriptures are God-breathed, they don't depend on our skills or lack of them to accomplish their purpose. They simply journey and bear their fruit on the back of faith and obedience. Preach the Word, child of God. First read it, soak it up. Make it part of you; allow it into you, invite it to be part of you. To form you, shape you, equip you. Then give it away. Share His Word like it's the cure for every disease known to man. Proclaim it with conviction. Urgency. Preach it. In Paul's letter to Timothy, he goes on to warn that, “the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. (2 Tim 4:3-4).The opportunities to share God's Word with this or that person may not always be there. So let's take them as God provides them before they disappear. Preach the Word!

Summary This week we're exploring an ancient technique to help you memorise a presentation with numerous points in a set order. Transcript Hello and welcome to episode 194 of the Leadership Today podcast where each week we share practical tips to improve your leadership. This week we're exploring an ancient technique to help you memorise a presentation with numerous points in a set order. Think about the best presenters you've seen. Were they constantly checking their notes, or reading off PowerPoint slides? Probably not. There's nothing wrong with having notes, but it is compelling and indeed freeing to be able to present your ideas in a clear sequence without notes. Today we're going to explore a mnemonic or memory technique that is perfectly suited to storing away numerous points in a particular order. Many of us would say we don't have a great memory, but the problem is usually the initial storage of the memory rather than recall of the memory. For thousands of years people have used various techniques to store memories in a way that makes them easier to retrieve. One approach that's particularly effective is the Memory Palace, also known as the Method of Loci (or location). I've used this approach to memorise presentations up to 30 minutes long comfortably without needing to use notes. I really don't consider myself to have special memory abilities. This technique really makes it quite easy. The first thing you need to do when using the Memory Palace technique is to think of a location with various way points that you know well. For example, I use the house I currently live in, storing points away in rooms and locations in a set path through the house. It could be a path you regularly walk that has clear landmarks and objects along the way. Ideally you will use this same path for every presentation you want to remember. The pathway and landmarks should be effortless to recall. Using my house I have a number of places where I can store a memory or point in my presentation. I start at the front door, then there's the entrance hall, around the corner to a bathroom, a son's bedroom, on to the kitchen, then the living room, another son's room, then the dining room, lounge room, upstairs to yet another son's room, another bathroom, and then a final bedroom. That's 11 way points which is plenty. I typically find I don't even need to use the upstairs rooms. We then chunk up our presentation into main points. Each of these main points should be easy to talk through. You can even contain multiple points within these points if you want to get really advanced. The key then is to create a vivid and hopefully unusual visual association you can store in each location. The more bizarre, colourful and ridiculous the better. Let's say I'm giving a general presentation about leadership. My first chunk is a discussion about the definition of leadership I typically use and some discussion that will come out of that. I have about 5 minutes worth of content that I can use around this point. So the first point I want to remember is “what is leadership?”. The visual reminder could be the word “leadership” shaped like a large bright red inflated question mark. Perhaps I could also put some smaller question marks following the large question mark as it walks around in a circle. My second point is around the impact leadership can have. So in the second room, the bathroom, I might have a large hammer smashing the mirror on the wall - a memorable image of impact. If I have several sub-points under that main point, I could memorise a sequence of events unfolding in the room. For example, if I want to talk about the impact of leadership on people, organisations and society, I could have the hammer smash a figurine representing people, then a building representing organisations, then a globe representing society. We repeat the storage process through the remainder of the rooms. To store all of this information away I just walk through the house in my mind, recalling each of the visual cues and ensuring I can then bring to mind the points I need to make. I physically walk through the house the first few times, closing my eyes in each room to store away the visual associations. I find that makes the memories even stronger. A few final tips - think about key objects in each room. For example, my eldest son has a record player in his room, so I use that to interact with other visual cues. We have a fire place in our lounge room, so I often have points interacting with fire in that room. I recommend the first time you use this technique that you keep a simple paper copy of the points. If nothing else, getting your presentation down to a post-it note of points is far ahead of reading from slides or pages of notes. Also, you can use this approach for more than just presentations. Anything you need to memorise in a particular order will work, so you could memorise your calendar for the day, a list of errands, or people you need to speak with. I hope you find this approach as helpful as I have. Give it a try and let me know how you go. Every Ramadan in Arabic class, we get students to come up with their favourite ayaat (verses) of the Quran or Hadith (sayings of the Prophet Muhammad saw) and we translate it and try to memorise it. The key lesson here is with basic rudimentary Arabic, you're able to break down the ayah or Hadith word for word and it makes your favourite ayah or Hadith that much more special because the meaning hits different in its original language. First, I do some research on the media write-ups about this film, and especially about the concept of Hitler escaping to South America after world war II. The Western press tries to minimize the idea of Hitler and the Nazis fleeing Germany, to set up camp in argentina, Brazil Peru, probably escaping by Switzerland. There most important information I found about that was that of now declassified FBI document that says in 1955, Hitler was identified in a small town, and had maps for treasure that he got from his friends at the vatican! I'd say this is very plausible, since Hitler was very cozy with the Vatican, who openly supported the nazis. If this is true, that Hitler actually died at age 95 in South america, then I think that means he actually won the war! He got to try for world domination, and then I believe the allies let him off easy! They let him go accompany thousands of Nazi scientists who set up at the foot of the Andes. There are many villages nearby, that BANDMATEY says are known for their Blue-Eyed blonde denizens. As for the film itself, it is based on the idea that Hitler was cloned, and his duplicates adopted out into families around the world. This is not so far-fetched of an idea, since the Nazis were experimenting with genetic cloning, as well as a myriad of other things. ++++++++TO THE DEMOCRATS! The spirit of @JimiHendrix comes to visit me, and invites me to jam, by making me watch his live performance of machine gun, I duet. Question: just USA always have to be a leader? Why not let China take the lead economically, if they want to burn out their economy, let them! Let them take the lead in manufacturing knick knacks, like how Taiwan used to do. There's too much emphasis on being a leader, and not being a collaborator, competition to the detriment of all. Everybody in the world system is trying to press their agenda on to everybody else; where is the partnership? ++++++++++ TO THE DEMOCRATS! Why do presenters always attempt to memorise presentations? You can learn to recite a poem or the lyrics to a song over days or weeks. Yet, if you are uncomfortable in front of your audience, you may still struggle to remember the words; I know I do! So here is my best advice on preparing to deliver a pitch When I discuss my approach with my clients, they invariably say that I must prepare thoroughly and have a script? My reply, scripts are for actors! Your preparation is the knowledge and work experience you have gained while building your business. P.S. It's also not practical as the presentation is rarely complete until the final hours before the deadline. How to Start: Start by honing your presentation down to ten or so sentences. Sentence one: Create a headline (this is what newspapers do). e.g. 98 out of 100 people who look up your website do not proceed to engagement. Sentence two: Tell a problem story? e.g. Almost half the workforce in California does not speak English as their first language. Sentence three: Introduce yourself and your business. The question I am always asked at this point is, should I not introduce myself at the start? My reply: The credits to a movie only roll after they've got your attention! You should follow their lead and get attention first. It's also very likely someone else will have introduced you earlier. Sentence four: Tell your audience how you solve their problem. e.g. I capture your business story and give you the confidence to tell it or sell it. (This is what I say, in a sentence, not ten minutes of jargon.) Still to be done: (this is enough for now) These additional questions will need to be answered at some point e.g. financial forecasts, timeline, market size, team expertise, competition, ASK? Your audience will only want to know this information if you have engaged them in the first four sentences of the pitch conversation. Once you have created these four attention-grabbing sentences, it's time to review, expand and create slides to support your chosen words. Next phase of preparation: Once you have one sentence for each slide to anchor you, you will deliver the message you wish to convey with confidence and clarity. Next, expand the conversation by telling stories, case studies, show charts, graphs, that support you and further inform your audience. No Script: When it comes to the time for you to present to your audience, you will have the confidence to engage fully without the anxiety of trying to remember a line or a particular word. When in front of your audience: Tell the story of the image on the slide, do the same with the next slide and so on and so forth. Each slide should have a minimum of text. Ask yourself honestly if the text is there to inform your audience or remind you to say something; if your answer is the latter, remove the text. A good presenter's aim should be to have the listener look at you while occasionally glancing at your slides to reinforce the message. Take my advice, and you will become a confident, believable presenter who wins audiences to your way of thinking. "Memory athletes" compete to see who can remember the most random numbers in an hour. Or else to memorise decks of playing cards. Memory training is big in China, where there are TV game shows for memory contests, and where parents pay good money to get their children trained in memorisation techniques. Everyone thought the Chinese were invincible, and that we were at the limits of what could be memorised - until 2019 when a group of North Korean teenagers arrived at the world championships, smashed a bunch of records, and returned to Pyonyang. Since then, nothing has been heard of them. What's their secret? And why does North Korea want to dominate the world in this obscure sport? Presenter/Producer: Jolyon Jenkins
