This is the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain.Today is the 12th of December and here are the headlines. In a significant ruling on Thursday, the Supreme Court directed that civil courts cannot hear cases challenging the ownership and title of places of worship. This includes major disputes like the Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi and the Krishna Janmabhoomi temple in Mathura. The court clarified that no new suits can be filed, and no interim or final orders, including surveys, will be allowed until further hearings. Several similar suits are pending in different locations across India. On Thursday, the Union Cabinet approved two crucial bills related to holding simultaneous elections for Lok Sabha and state assemblies. One bill proposes a constitutional amendment, while the other seeks to align assembly elections in Delhi, Puducherry, and Jammu & Kashmir. These bills are expected to be introduced in the current Parliament session. This development follows months of discussions after the Kovind-led committee's recommendations on simultaneous elections.Thursday saw chaos in both Houses of Parliament. The Lok Sabha was adjourned after BJP MP Nishikant Dubey raised allegations about Congress leader Sonia Gandhi's alleged ties to billionaire George Soros. Opposition MPs protested fiercely, even climbing the Speaker's dais. The Rajya Sabha was adjourned after a disruption over a motion by Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury, leading to further tension in the parliamentary proceedings for the day.Ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal announced that the Mahila Samman Rashi Scheme will increase the monthly allowance for women to Rs 2,100, up from Rs 1,000, if AAP is re-elected. The scheme, approved by Chief Minister Atishi's Cabinet, is aimed at supporting women's financial empowerment. The announcement is seen as part of the AAP's strategy to secure women's votes in the upcoming elections. In a clash between security forces and alleged Maoists in Chhattisgarh's Bastar region, seven Maoists were killed early Thursday. The encounter, which lasted over seven hours, took place in the dense jungles of Abujhmad, a heavily forested and un-surveyed area. The police are continuing search operations to confirm the number of casualties and recover weapons. The region has long been a hotspot for Maoist insurgents, making security operations challenging. This was the Catch Up on 3 Things by The Indian Express.

The court directed that Shajahan, the Enforcement Directorate, the CBI, the state home secretary be impleaded as parties in the suo motu matter initiated on the allegations of sexual atrocities and land grab reported from the area in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district. The Assam assembly witnessed stormy scenes today, with the Speaker rejecting the Opposition's bid to discuss the Cabinet's decision to repeal the Assam Muslim Marriage and Divorce Registration Act 1935. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had asserted that the decision had been taken to curb child marriage, stating that the Act has a provision that enables the marriage of brides and grooms below the ages of 18 and 21, respectively. Kejriwal had approached the court challenging a Delhi High Court order upholding the summons issued to him in the criminal defamation case. This is the Catch Up on 3 Things for the Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain. It's the 1st of February and here are the headlines.Presenting the interim Union Budget in Parliament this morning, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that there would be no change in tax rates for direct and indirect taxes, including import duties. Meanwhile, the fiscal deficit for 2024-25 is estimated at 5.1 per cent of GDP against 5.8 per cent in the current financial year. With the Lok Sabha polls right around the corner, Sitharaman kicked off her Budget speech by highlighting the economic triumphs of the Modi government over the last decade. The political reactions to the Budget were largely along expected lines. Political leaders from the ruling NDA alliance have welcomed it, while some Opposition leaders very quickly wrote it off as “disappointing”. While, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called the Budget “encouraging”, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said, quote, "It was one of the shortest speeches on record in the Budget. Not very much came out of it,” Unquote.Amid the ongoing political crisis in Jharkhand following the Hemant Soren's resignation and subsequent arrest last night, Governor CP Radhakrishnan has agreed to to meet the coalition legislators today. Late night, Champai Soren, the state's Transport Minister and a loyalist of the CM, had staked claim to form the government, but the Governor had sought time saying he will revert on their proposal after considering the legalities. The Supreme Court today asked the Anjuman Intezamia Masajid, which had approached it against the Varanasi district court's order allowing Hindus to perform prayers in the Gyanvapi mosque's southern cellar, to move the Allahabad High Court. The mosque committee, as a result, moved the Allahabad High Court. The Advocate on Record for the mosque committee, this morning, had moved an urgent application before the Supreme Court seeking its intervention. The Madhya Pradesh High Court has acquitted a 40-year-old man, who spent nearly 12 years in jail, after finding that his daughter's rape allegation against him was made after her father had objected to her being in a relationship. The court also found that she had previously admitted that her father did not have sexual relations with her. The HC noted that it was “clear like noon day that her statement by no stretch of imagination can be said to be of sterling quality”.This was the Catch-Up on the 3 Things by The Indian Express.
*) US says it downed Iranian drones, Houthi missile as Gaza war rages An American warship has shot down three Iranian drones and a ballistic missile fired by Yemen's Houthis, the US military has claimed. The US Central Command said in a statement that Iranian-backed Houthis fired one anti-ship ballistic missile from the group-controlled areas of Yemen towards the Gulf of Aden. It added that the missile was successfully shot by a US Navy destroyer. Less than an hour later, the US Navy destroyer engaged and shot down three Iranian UAVs in its vicinity, CENTCOM further said. *) Access to clean water in Gaza is ‘matter of life and death': UN agency The UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, has said that in besieged Gaza, access to clean water is a matter of life and death. In a post on X, UNRWA said, “In Gaza, every day is a struggle to find bread and water. Every day is a struggle to survive.” The UN agency pointed out that without safe water, many more people will die from deprivation and disease. *) ICJ rejects most of Ukraine's terror case against Russia The top UN court has mostly rejected Ukraine's claims that Russia was financing “terrorism” in eastern Ukraine, saying only that Moscow failed to investigate alleged breaches. Kiev had accused Moscow of being a “terrorist state” whose support for pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine was a harbinger of the full-fledged 2022 war. But the ICJ tossed out most of Ukraine's pleas, ruling only that Russia was “failing to take measures to investigate facts... regarding persons who have allegedly committed an offence.” *) Indian court permits Hindus to pray inside disputed Gyanvapi mosque An Indian court has weighed in on one of the country's most sensitive religious disputes by permitting Hindu worshippers to pray inside a mosque in the city of Varanasi. The court in Varanasi ruled that Hindu worshippers — who claim the Gyanvapi mosque replaced a destroyed temple to the deity Shiva — could pray in the building's basement. The Gyanvapi mosque is one of several Muslim places of worship that Hindu activists, backed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party, have sought for decades to reclaim for their religion. *) Global air travel returns to pre-Covid levels Air travel has taken another major leap in 2023 rising to 94 percent of 2019 levels as it recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic. The International Air Transport Association said that domestic travel in key markets such as China, India and the US had led the rebound but it expected a “normal” growth rate in 2024. Based on revenue passenger kilometres, travel in the fourth quarter of 2023 alone was 98.4 percent of where it was four years earlier, IATA said.

Vishnu Shankar Jain on Big Gyanvapi Victory for Hindus More Temples to be Taken Back SanjayDixit
THIS EPISODE FEATURES a ready reckoner of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb's prolific temple destructions across India. Copious evidence for this is available directly from Aurangzeb's Farmans (royal orders) and Akhbarat (news reports), William Crooke's Handbooks, De Graaf's chronicles, Charles Stewart's accounts and Jadunath Sarkar's five extraordinary volumes on Aurangzeb. We give a list of more than thirty Hindu temples that Aurangzeb destroyed in a vast geography that includes Agra, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, and Karnataka. That's almost seventy percent of undivided India's landmass.Aurangzeb's reign is undoubtedly the worst of bad news as far as the Hindu civilisational memory is concerned. In fact, the attitude towards Aurangzeb shown by some powerful sections of the contemporary Muslim community in India offers some of the most telling evidences for this fact. Some representatives of the Muslim clergy today, especially on TV debates, are quite candid in their assertion that the Gyanvapi “mosque” is a settled fact—i.e., Hindus have no claim over the original Kashi Visvavantha Temple. THE LIST OF DESTROYED HINDU TEMPLES featured in this podcast is just the tip of the iceberg. The mere sight of a Hindu temple aroused extreme hatred within Aurangzeb. But it was also a gift and an inspiration for posterity. Therefore it is unsurprising that that a whole gamut of future fanatics like Shah Waliullah, Syed Ahmed Khan, Allama Iqbal and Zia-ul-Haq… all of them regarded Aurangzeb as a role model and lamented the loss of his guidance for properly putting the infidel Hindus in their place. But in this historical backdrop, it is clear that the final chapter of this story of temple destructions has still not been written. This podcast episode provides valuable lessons from this slice of Aurangzeb's long and brutal career of persecuting Hindus. These are lessons that must not be forgotten.A Heartfelt AppealIf you liked this podcast, please consider making a donation of your choice to The Dharma Dispatch Podcasts so we can keep our content free and offer more such informative and insightful content to you, our valued audience.* Click the button below to make a donation.* Donate via UPI: dharmadispatch@axl* Or Scan the QR Code given below to donate via UPI. In Gyanvapi Case hearing, Hindu side application for carbon dating, etc. was rejected. Is it a set back to the Hindu side? Will this affect the direction of the Civil Suit? Sanjay Dixit examines the Order and explains.
Muslim side seems to have given up on the Gyanvapi case. They have not filed the counter to Civil Suit, then they have not even properly replied to the application for scientific investigation of Shivling. They have not filed revision in High Court. Are the Hindus winning by default?

Host Nidhi Suresh is joined by Aishwarya Iyer of Scroll who talks about her series on the Hindutva campaign around the Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. In her series, Aishwarya talks about the five Hindu women whose petitions demanding permission to pray at the mosque have propelled the campaign. She examines their links with a former Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Sohan Lal Arya who had filed a similar plea in 1995. “One common point for these women was their desire to attend prayers together in the premises,” Aishwarya says, “Their petition did not have anything regarding the Shivling but now it has motivated them to go deeper into the case.”Nidhi and Aishwarya also discuss the sociocultural fallout of the communal campaign against Gyanvapi. “Only a person born and brought up in Varanasi can understand the loss of its beautiful culture,” Aishwarya argues while explaining how the targeting of the mosque has caused unease among the city's Muslims.
