Around the turn of the millennium, Pentecostal churches began to pepper majority-Buddhist Sri Lanka, setting off a sense of alarm among Buddhists who saw Christianity as a neocolonial threat to the nation. Rumors of foul play in the death of a Buddhist monk, as well as allegations of proselytizing in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami and during the final stages of civil war, spurred nationalist anxieties, moral panics, and even episodes of violence by Buddhists against Christians suspected of facilitating “unethical” conversions. Through vivid ethnography and keen observations of media events, Karma and Grace: Religious Difference in Millennial Sri Lanka (Columbia UP, 2023) illuminates disputes over religious freedom and pluralism amid the rise of charismatic Christianity in Sri Lanka. Neena Mahadev explores the dueling efforts of Buddhist nationalists and Christian evangelists to reshape Sri Lanka's religious, economic, and political landscapes. She considers theological and political impasses between Buddhism's vast timescales of karma and Christians' promises of the immediacy of their God's salvific grace. While Christian missions spread “the Good News,” subsets of Buddhists produced bad press, sting operations, and disparaging media to impede born-again churches from taking root. In gripping detail, Mahadev recounts how modernist and traditionalist Theravāda Buddhists, Pentecostal newcomers, long-established Christian denominations, local deity and spirit cults, and the innovations of mavericks intermingle in a multireligious public sphere. Even amid trenchant conflicts, Karma and Grace demonstrates that social proximity between rivals is also conducive to religious experimentation and the ambiguities of identity that allow Sri Lankans to live with difference. Facing headwinds from cautious sentiment in international markets and influenced by expectation of a delayed interest rate cut by the US Federal Reserve, Indian benchmark indices followed the lead of other Asian markets, ending the day with notable losses. Sensex fell more than 900 points to close 1.23 per cent in the red. Nifty was no better, the NSE index saw a fall of more than 1.5 per cent on Wednesday. The fall in Nifty and Sensex was the biggest single day fall since January this year. The broader market wasn't spared either, as both the Nifty Small Cap 250 and Nifty Mid-Cap 150 indices underwent their steepest one-day drops in over two years. The small cap index was dragged down by more than 5 per cent, while the mid cap index plummeted by 4.2 per cent. This market correction follows a rally in midcap and smallcap stocks. The small and mid cap wave has now been tempered by a regulatory crackdown from Sebi and RBI, raising investor concerns. Mint's senior correspondent Dipti Sharma spoke to market experts and analysts to make sense of the bloodbath Dalal Street saw on Wednesday. Experts pointed to comments from regulators about overvaluation in the market, upcoming stress-test disclosures for small and midcap funds, and lower market liquidity as factors that contributed to the crash.Smallcaps had a bad day at the bourses. It might get worse: the enforcement directorate seized the assets of several companies after it ascertained that they were party to a scam. Varun Sood and Ram Sahgal team up to investigate this scam, wherein trading entities were found to hold sizeable positions in smallcap stocks. ED has said that some of these players were involved in stock manipulation, and will charge them accordingly. Don't miss out on this fascinating story of the Mahadev betting scam.In 2011, a powerful earthquake and Tsunami struck the coast of Japan and changed the course of nuclear energy. The tsunami's impact resulted in electric grid failure and damaged nearly all the backup energy sources of the Fukushima nuclear power plant. Though no fatalities were reported, more than 160 thousand residents were evacuated. A tragedy of this scale, second only to the Chernobyl leak, raised doubts about the safety of nuclear energy. The demand for nuclear energy went down, dragging uranium demand with it. However, uranium seems to be back in demand, and so is nuclear energy. The prices for uranium have been above 90 dollars a pound for over a few months now. So, what's driving the sudden increase in uranium demand? Rise in energy prices following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and nations commiting to move away from fossil fuels are some of the reasons. Mint's Tina Edwin explains what's behind the renewed interest in nuclear energy. India recently signed a trade deal with the India's deal with the European Free Trade Association. The bloc comprises Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland. The deal may not drastically boost bilateral trade, given modest exports and imports outside of gold. However, its significance lies in EFTA's $100 billion investment commitment and the promise of creating 1 million jobs in India over 15 years. The move also reflects India's broader strategy to foster long-term economic relationships and support its ambition to become a global manufacturing hub. With ongoing trade negotiations with the EU and over 50 countries, India's proactive trade policy aims to secure easy market access and attract investments, underscoring the crucial role of strategic trade agreements in achieving its economic goals. But, is the trade deal enough for bolstering India's ambitions of becoming a 30 trillion dollar economy? Mint's senior editor N Madhavan explains why India needs to punch way above its weight when it comes to trade. What comes to mind when I say the word Bengaluru? For some it's the traffic, for others startups and tech. Those on social media know the city for its weather and cherry blossom season. But for those who've lived here for some time it's the lovely mix of culture, the most perfect masala dosa out there, and a bustling pub culture. It's the ‘livability' of the city that has set it apart for decades. However, all that is changing. The city is undergoing an acute water shortage. Even high-end gated communities are unable to provide its residents with drinking water. With rapid concretisation and most of its water resources getting dried up, Bengaluru is facing one of its biggest challenges. The city largely depends on water from Cauvery, which is pumped from more than 100 kilometres away. The river supplies 1,460 million litres per day which is well short of the current demand—estimated at around 2,100 million litres per day. Mint's Madhurima Nandy takes a deep dive into the water crisis staring Bengaluru in the face right now. In 2022, the city even saw its Outer Ring Road flooded during monsoon. We'd love to hear your feedback on this podcast. Let us know by writing to us at feedback@livemint.com. Infosys saw yet another top-level exit last week after its Chief Financial Officer Nilanjan Roy decided to step down to explore external opportunities. If we include Roy, the last 12 months have seen eight seniors leaving Infosys. But why? Find out what could be behind this unusual churn in the IT major. Like Infosys, Indian Premier League or IPL too is seeing a churn. We may see a generational shift in the auction starting tomorrow in Dubai. Here's a peak into this mega event. IPL is also a decacorn now. Its valuation has jumped about 28% in 2023. Moving on, Dalal Street bulls got a shot in their arm last week after the US Federal Reserve signaled a pivot and three rate cuts in 2024. This led to euphoric buying in the markets in the last two sessions, taking indices to record high levels. So will the Sensex and Nifty extend their rally into this week, making it an eighth straight weekly win?   After the financial markets, let us now move on to a scam which is turning big with each passing day. The Maharashtra government has now set up an SIT to probe if Mahadev betting app's owners are linked to wanted criminal Dawood Ibrahim. Listen to this episode of the podcast to know more.

Leaning Temple of Rateneshwar, Varanasi Also known as Matri-rin Mahadev or Kashi Karvat, Ratneshwar Mahadev Temple has to be one of the most photographed temples in the holy city of Banaras. An image of this temple is almost guaranteed to appear in any promotional materials about the ancient city, it is probably the most recognisable monument along the ghats for foreign visitors. The location of this temple is also a curious one. Rather than being built at a higher level and protected from the high flood waters of the Ganga during the monsoon season, it appears that the builders made a conscious decision to construct the temple in a location where for many months of the year it would be partially underwater.Today it would be all too easy to assume that the location of this temple and its leaning aspect is an anomaly, but there is plenty of evidence to suggest otherwise. Many paintings of the ghats from the early to mid 19th century depict leaning temples close to the Ganga, so it would appear that Ratneshwar Mahadev is now a lone survivor of this phenomenon. We also have documentary evidence of these leaning temples. The artist William Daniell writing in The Oriental Annual in 1834 observed : One of the most extraordinary objects to be witnessed at Benares and which is generally one of great curiosity to the stranger, is a pagoda standing in the river, there is nothing to connect it with the shore. The whole foundation is submerged, and two of the towers have declined so much out of the perpendicular as to form an acute angle with liquid plain beneath them….It has been surmised, and with probability, that this temple was originally erected upon the bank of the river, which then offered a firm and unsuspected foundation ..During the Winter and Spring months the water levels of the great Ganga are low enough to permit access without getting your feet wet. It's worth a quick exploration, there's some nice carvings that have remained in remarkably good condition considering the length of time this temple is submerged each year The claim is true. The Ratneshwar Mahadev Temple is situated at Manikarnika Ghat, Varanasi. The temple has developed a nine-degree slant. It is also referred to as Kashi Karvat (Kashi is the ancient name for Varanasi and karvat means leaning in Hindi). A Times Now report said that one of the beliefs held regarding the temple is that the ‘ghat' had collapsed and leaned backwards after not being able to withstand its weight. The temple supposedly stood straight before the 1860s. An Indian Travel Photography Blog, Kevin Standage, stated that the temple is famous for having a tilt of about nine degrees. Below are screenshots from the blog which shows the temple from varied angles:. The Ratneshwar Mahadev Temple, also known as Matri-rin Mahadev or Kashi Karvat, is a well-known temple in the holy city of Varanasi. It is a popular tourist attraction and is often featured in promotional materials for the city. The temple's unique location is also of interest, as it was built partially underwater for many months of the year. Although this may seem unusual, there is evidence to suggest that this was not uncommon for temples along the Ganga in the 19th century. In fact, many paintings from the early to mid-19th century depict leaning temples close to the river. One such temple was described in detail by the artist William Daniell in The Oriental Annual in 1834. He observed that the temple was standing in the river without any connection to the shore, and two of its towers had declined so much out of the perpendicular that they formed an acute angle with the liquid plain beneath them. He surmised that the temple was originally erected on the riverbank when it offered a firm and unsuspected foundation. The Ratneshwar Mahadev Temple is situated at Manikarnika Ghat, Varanasi, and has a nine-degree slant. It is believed that the ghat collapsed and leaned backwards after being unable to withstand the temple's weight. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ramanispodcast/message

During this time of lockdown, the centre for quantum software and information (QSI) at the University of Technology Sydney has launched an online seminar series. With talks once or twice a week from leading researchers in the field, meQuanics is supporting this series by mirroring the audio from each talk. I would encourage if you listen to this episode, to visit and subscribe to the UTS:QSI YouTube page to see each of these talks with the associated slides to help it make more sense. https://youtu.be/XSJks4cRDv0 Cryptographic protocols for classical clients to verifiably delegate quantum computation to untrusted quantum servers - the desiderata and their feasibility. TITLE: How well can a classical client delegate quantum computation? SPEAKER: Dr Kai-Min Chung AFFILIATION: Institute of Information Science, Academia Sinica, Taiwan HOSTED BY: Prof Zhengfeng Ji, UTS Centre for Quantum Software and Information ABSTRACT: In a recent breakthrough, Mahadev (FOCS 2018) constructed the first classical verification of quantum computation (CVQC) protocol that allows a classical client to delegate the computation of a BQP language (i.e., a decision problem) to an efficient quantum server. In this talk, we present several generalizations of Mahadev's work. In particular, we initiate the study of CVQC protocols for quantum *sampling* problems and construct the first such protocol that allows a classical client to verifiably obtain a sample drawn from a quantum computation from a quantum server. We also construct the first protocol with efficient verification, i.e., the client's runtime can be sublinear in the quantum time complexity of the delegated computation. Finally, we present a generic compiler that compiles any CVQC protocol to achieve blindness, i.e., the server learns nothing about the client's input, which leads to the first constant-round blind CVQC protocol. Based on joint works with Nai-Hui Chia, Takashi Yamakawa, Yi Lee, Han-Husan Lin, and Xiaodi Wu REFERENCES: Classical Verification of Quantum Computations with Efficient Verifier: https://arxiv.org/abs/1912.00990

Bhakti Mathur grew up in Delhi, India, and with a graduate degree in economics and a postgraduate degree in finance from Delhi University pursued a career in banking for 22 years. In 2000, she and her husband moved to Hong Kong, which she now calls home and where both her children were born.  In 2010, unable to find a picture book on Holi, the Indian festival of colours, for her young sons, she decided to write one herself. This started the “Amma Tell Me” series, a collection of children's picture books about Hindu festivals and mythology with 13 published titles.  She received an MFA in creative writing from Hong Kong University in 2017, then had her two course manuscripts published by Penguin India as Amma Take Me to the Golden Temple and Amma Take Me to Tirupati. These began the “Amma Take Me” series, exploring different faiths through their important places of worship. The series has four published titles. Bhakti has conducted story-telling sessions and reading and writing workshops at schools and literary festivals in Hong Kong, Singapore and India. She freelances as a journalist and writes features on culture, health and fitness for the South China Morning Post. Bhakti also loves hiking and running – she ran the New York Marathon in 2017 – and is currently studying yoga through the Iyengar Yoga in Depth programme. An avid reader, when not writing or chasing after her young boys, Bhakti is happiest curled up with a book in one hand and a hot cup of chai in the other. www.bhaktimathur.comInstagram @ammatellmeFacebook/AmmatellmeSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/back2basicsmode?fan_landing=true)

In this discourse, three questions have been answered by Om Swami. The first question asked was- Who was the first person to start the celebration of guru purnima and when did it start and why was it started? [Origin of guru purnima] Om Swami says that there are different stories from different places related to guru purnima. This trend is not very old, but the first circumambulation of Mahadev was done by Ganapati. So, that would be the first instance of the first guru purnima he says. Later, as people celebrated other festivals and paid respects to their deity and gods, it was felt that there should be someday dedicated to their guru too when they could show their love and respect towards him. As one cannot ask their guru's age, guru purnima became that day when people celebrated their gurus, by paying their respects and love. A night of full moon was chosen, to signify that just like the full moon their guru was complete too. Festivals were like a break from the mundane for the householders. There were no festivals from the month of May to October, therefore, guru purnima came to be celebrated in the month of June-July, says Om Swami. The second question asked was- How to maintain and keep the sanctity in the relationship between a guru and a disciple? For sometimes certain actions by some disciples look wrong. Om Swami says that when someone requests for discipleship he never looks into their good or bad deeds etc but accepts them without any judgment. He says that once he has accepted them as they are, he never lets go of them. To maintain purity, whenever possible one should do good deeds according to their capacity he says. The third question asked was- If someone takes him on as their guru right away, will he accept them as their disciple immediately? Om Swami says that before initiating someone he has to see if they are ready. When he initiates someone it is a formalization of a relationship that is already in a devotee's heart. Om Swami's Parampara (Lineage) - Part 2 [Hindi]

This discourse is an answer to the question as to which parampara (lineage) Om Swami is from and where did it start. This is the second part of the series on Om Swami's parampara. Om Swami says that his guru Naga Baba took initiation of aghor sadhana from Hari Nam Das aghori, and while doing his sadhana he lived in a cemetery for eight years. Naga Baba later also got initiation of Sri Vidya from a buddhist lama and during that period he remained at the shakti peet itself for twelve years. Mohan Das udasin was Naga Baba's guru and Naga Baba got initiation for bhakti and love(parental love) from him. All these different practices came together like different flowers bound in a bouquet and was given and received by Om Swami. When Om Swami received all this, he had to see as to what would work in today's time and world. All this came to him before he started his main sadhana and they had become a good mixture. When he started his sadhana of bhagawan Mahadev, Ma Shakti and of the Udasin lineage he had in addition with him a mantra from his uncle who was an ardent devotee of Shiva. In Badrinath he received a mantra from Bhairavi Ma. His guru Naga Baba was initiated by a naga saint with the sabar mantra. Om Swami says, that he had with him some mantras from Tantra, some mantras from the Vedas and some Sabar mantras plus his own sadhanas from this life time and some from his previous ones. Now with all this within him, he started his sadhana. He sat in a cave to first bring one pointedness in his mind and then started on his sadhana. First he awakened the Lalita Sahasranama. Then he awakened the mantra which was given by Bhairavi Ma. After this, he left the cave and went into the forests where he awakened the mantra of Ma Gayatri. The kriya that was received by him before, and due to which he was able to talk to his deity was completely championed. As soon as Ved Mata Gayatri's mantra was awakened, his doubts regarding his ability to get answers to his questions from his inner consciousness completely vanished and that left him with no doubt of the truth. Soon after this, he awakened the Vishnu Sahasranama. After this, he started his main sadhana of Sri Vidya and after completing it he went to Kamyakya to honour the Vedic way and as was instructed by Ma Tripurasundari. In Kamyakya, he received a Tantra initiation which brought everything together and it became complete. Om Swami says, after this he went to Rudra nath, and later from there he went to Bengal where he awakened a mantra of bhagawan Ganapati. After this he went to Rudra nath again where he completed a sadhana and on completion he came to the ashram. After coming to the ashram, in eight months, he made the fifteen nityas in the Sri Vidya occupy their respective places. Om Swami says, the lineage, now took a different form. The different lineages were like an inverted tree with all the branches spreading in different directions. Now from the different branches there was one trunk and roots. He says, all these mantras are very ancient and they are not written down but are passed on orally even today, and that is the reason he is cautious and thinks before giving a mantra to anyone. It is a sacred heritage of the saints and sages from ancient times and a person's motive for a mantra needs to be looked into before giving it. He says, the thought that someone's problems can be fixed through the use of mantra is like conducting a business. It will neither help the giver nor the receiver. Listen to the full discourse to get in-depth knowledge on this beautiful topic.
