If you’re BMW and you’re going to make a pickup truck concept, let’s face it – it’s going to be super fancy. And you’re going to insist that it’s just this little old thing you let some trainees tinker with, and you’re never actually going to make it in real life. But if you did…It would be kind of boss. BMW’s X7 truck has a 3.0-liter turbo inline-six, offering 335 horsepower – plus a longer body and lighter weight than BMW’s upcoming three-row X7 SUV, partly due to the carbon-fiber reinforced plastic that’s being used for the truck’s roof and rear lid and doors.A dozen or so vocational trainees at BMW Group have reportedly joined forces to produce the road-legal show car, which features a fairly small bed, but one that’s lined with strips of teak wood. BMW says finishes like the honey colored wood and metallic blue paint were inspired by “sporting yachts.”And while some auto writers are speculating – even recommending – that BMW try to take a grab at the massive cash pile supporting the high-end pickup truck market, the German automaker insists that this is a one-off and they have no serious ambitions to produce it.But who knows… if you’re in BMW product development, this might actually be the exact right moment to sneak it in. That’s because BMW’s CEO Harald Krueger just announced he would be stepping down from the helm of the automaker, and the decision is being blamed on Krueger’s strategy being “too cautious” in its approach to development of electric cars. So, let’s throw caution into the wind, shall we! Time to make a pickup.
Show #522 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 8th July 2019. CHARIN HIGH POWER COMMERCIAL VEHICLE CHARGING STANDARDIZATION TASK FORCE UPDATE Here's an update which I just found in a PDF online, and it's dated 10th June, so it passed me by at the time, so I might not be topical but I'm thorough! The Charging Interface Initiative e. V. - abbreviated to CharIN e. V. - is a registered association, the purpose of which is the worldwide promotion and support of the Combined Charging System. A CharIN task force was formed with the following purpose statement: "Define a new commercial vehicle high power charging standard to maximize customer flexibility.” It was named the High Power Commercial Vehicle Charging Task Force (HPCVC for short)." The High Power Commercial Vehicle charging standard would allow users to recharge their large, commercial vehicles (Classes 6, 7 & 8) in 20-30 minutes. Up to 80% of Class 8 truck, carrying 500kWh, in 20 minutes. Up to 4.5 MW power delivery, 3000amps. Some of the OEM'S represented are Daimler, FCA, BYD, MAN, Ford, GM, Hyundai, Porsche, Protera, Volvo and Tesla. HPCVC called for contributions to solve the requirements as set forth. There were five submissions, from Tesla, Electrify America, ABB, paXos, and Staubli. They were reviewed and graded based on how well they solved the requirements and on their technological readiness. The Task Force reviewed the submissions first online, and again after presentations at the in-person voting event on May 16. Ranked choice voting was used to select a winning submission. That winner has not yet been announced due to some further discussions taking place. An in-person voting meeting was held on May 16th. 2019 at the CharIN conference. Ranked choice voting was used. A winner was chosen but has not yet been announced. https://assets.ctfassets.net/ucu418cgcnau/5J81Ru4JDRMBk9GDh4Xv7O/88cff89a0a720999f42ab8202909ed53/04_-_Bus_and_Truck_Working_Council_June_2019_-_CharIN_HPCVCS_Task_Force_update_6.10.2019_Rustam.pdf SLOW TRANSITION TO ELECTRIC FELLS BMW’S CEO AFTER JUST ONE TERM "When BMW AG picked Harald Krueger to run the company more than four years ago, he was the perfect candidate. Young, with a personable manner and decades of experience across the company, Krueger appeared ready to guide the venerable luxury carmaker into a future of electric, self-driving and shared automobiles." says Yahoo Finance: "But on Friday -- two weeks before his contract came up for renewal -- Krueger quit. Instead of leading the company through the biggest upheaval in a generation, he was felled by the transition as he failed to provide a roadmap to the future. The company was a pioneer in electric vehicles with the i3 city car introduced in 2013. It was the first major automaker to use lightweight carbon fiber in mass-market models. As Krueger puzzled over how to reinvent BMW for the electric age, it was almost a year before he presented his strategic vision — which was a bust. He delayed BMW’s next major electric car, effectively squandering its leadership in the field." https://finance.yahoo.com/news/slow-transition-electric-fells-bmw-163115911.html Meanwhile Clean Technica says: "Commentators feel that his inadequate and indecisive response to the fast shift of the premium segments towards EVs, especially the rise of Tesla, are a large part of the reason for him leaving the post. Krüger said in the recent BMW Group annual general meeting, held in May: “At this point, no one can reliably predict how quickly electromobility will progress, or which drive train will prevail.” BMW’s sedan sales have fallen off a cliff in the US market over the past 12 months directly as a result of Tesla’s fully electric Model 3. There are two potential candidates to replace him: Oliver Zipse, BMW’s head of production, and Klaus Fröhlich, head of development. We recently saw that Fröhlich is, like Krueger, unconvinced about the shift to EVs." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/07/07/tesla-disrupts-bmw-boss-throws-in-the-towel/ Fröhlich’s more recent comments showed an even more dismissive stance on electric cars. In a round table interview in Munich, the BMW executive argued that “there is no customer requests for BEVs.” Doubling down, he added that “If we have a big offer, a big incentive, we could flood Europe and sell a million cars, but Europeans won’t buy these things. Customers in Europe do not buy EVs. We pressed these cars into the market, and they’re not wanted. We can deliver an electrified vehicle to each person, but they will not buy them.” https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-fighter-bmw-new-ceo-could-revive-evs-amid-model-3-assault/ FORD AND VW WILL SHARE EV PLATFORMS "Ever since Ford and Volkswagen started “discussing synergies”, as business jargon goes, it was more than expected that the German automaker would allow Ford to use its MEB platform, a modular structure exclusively for EVs. Now Reuters reports that people familiar with the discussions can tell for sure that is really going to happen. What a surprise!" reports Gustavo for InsideEVs: "Having Volkswagen allow Ford to use its MEB platform is a logical sequence to the deal. Especially because the German company is willing to sell the MEB for even smaller automakers, such as e.Go. This is the easiest way to make the platform cheaper apart from presenting the most vehicles with it. That will help the German carmaker reach scale savings earlier than predicted. But it is a bit more complex than that. The more companies that use the MEB, the better for Volkswagen. It will help the German company set standards in the EV auto industry in the same fashion VHS ruled videocassette instead of Betamax. Or Windows did the same with computers instead of Apple." https://insideevs.com/news/358620/ford-vw-share-ev-platform/ VW TO DEEPEN ALLIANCES WITH BATTERY SUPPLIERS FOR ELECTRIC PUSH "Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) will create joint ventures and help finance battery production to persuade skeptical cell suppliers to back its aggressive push for mass producing electric vehicles, board member Stefan Sommer told Reuters." according to Reuters: "VW has said it will buy 50 billion euros ($56.57 billion) worth of battery cells and has identified Sweden’s Northvolt, South Korea’s SKI (096770.KS), LG Chem (051910.KS) and Samsung SDI (006400.KS) as well as China’s CATL (300750.SZ) as strategic partners." Sommer said: "Not every supplier is convinced that electric mobility will come on such a large scale. You need to spend more time convincing them to invest in the auto industry. When it comes to normal components, suppliers have the opportunity to sell to other car makers, if VW buys less. But with electromobility we all know: if it does not work for VW, then it won’t work for others. We have not been able to build as many cars as we wanted to. Our supplier is not delivering the numbers that we need." https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-volkswagen-electric-batteries-idUKKCN1U30I8 ELON MUSK: YOU ONLY HAVE A LIMITED TIME TO BUY A TESLA CAR (AT THESE PRICES) "If you're thinking about buying a Tesla, you may want to do that sooner rather than later — at least if you trust Elon Musk's vision of the company's future. Answering a question on Twitter on whether consumers only have a limited time to buy a Tesla car, Musk at first answered with a simple "yes." says Mashable today: "He later clarified: "To be clear, consumers will still be able to buy a Tesla, but the clearing price will rise significantly, as a fully autonomous car that can function as a robotaxi is several times more valuable than a non-autonomous car." Tesla itself plans to launch its own ride-hailing network that would compete with companies like Uber (which is also working on autonomous driving). In this future, a Tesla car will be far more valuable as it will actually be able to earn its owner money. Musk previously compared buying any non-self-driving car to buying a horse, and called Tesla cars "appreciating assets." https://mashable.com/article/tesla-prices-autonomous-driving/ Send me your EV questions: hello@evnewsdaily or use social media. Show #509 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 25th June 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. BMW VOWS TO REV UP ELECTRIC CAR ROLLOUT "German high-end carmaker BMW said Tuesday it would accelerate its plans to build new electric models, as the whole industry comes under pressure to meet strict emissions regulations.: said Yahoo News today: "The Munich-based manufacturer will offer 25 electrified vehicles in 2023, "two years earlier than originally planned," chief executive Harald Krueger said in a statement. Of those, more than half will be all-electric while the remainder will be hybrids, BMW said." Meanwhile Motor1.com says: "It’s a big day at BMW. Today the company is hosting the NextGen Conference at its headquarters in Germany. There, the Vision M Next concept (which could make it to production), 5 Series experimental electric vehicle, and E-Box electric motorcycle debuted. But there's still more news coming out of Munich. BMW Chief of Engineering, Klaus Frohlich, in a roundtable interview with journalists, including Senior Editor Jeff Perez, says BMW's M division is betting big on battery power. The company will introduce plug-in hybrid M performance vehicles in the near future." "The BMW M Next concept is unquestionably the highlight of the company's big "Next" conference. It looks like a modern M1 and has a 600 horsepower plug-in hybrid powertrain, so how could it not? Yet BMW also revealed something with an even more powerful and potentially more interesting powertrain, and it was wrapped up in a current BMW 5 Series body." writes Autoblog: "There are a couple other interesting tidbits about Project BEV, such as the fact that BMW got everything packaged into the 5 Series without taking up passenger space. That's seriously impressive that BMW could get three motors and their accompanying batteries, cooling equipment and more stuffed into a production car that was never designed for it in the first place." And finally via Automotive News Europe: This year, the automaker will start production of the electric Mini at its plant in Oxford, England. This will be followed in 2020 by the electric BMW iX3 midsize SUV, to be built in Shenyang, China, for global markets. Following in 2021 will be the iNEXT crossover, which will be made in Dingolfing, Germany, and the i4 midsize sedan, set to be assembled in Munich. BMW currently offers plug-in hybrid versions of the 3- and 7-series sedans and X3 and X5 crossovers. This summer, the company will release plug-in hybrid versions of the 5 series and 2-series Active Tourer with next-generation technology and a longer electric range. These will be followed next year by the X1 and 3-series Touring plug-in hybrids." https://news.yahoo.com/bmw-vows-rev-electric-car-rollout-083048012.html https://www.autoblog.com/2019/06/25/bmw-5-series-711-horsepower-electric-monster/ https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/bmw-plug-hybrids-automatically-switch-ev-mode-2020 THE LIGHTYEAR ONE IS A SOLAR-POWERED CAR WITH AN EYE-WATERING PRICE "Dutch clean mobility company Lightyear today debuted its long-range prototype, the Lightyear One, with a range of 725 km (450 miles) and a small battery that can be charged directly via sunlight, or from conventional charging stations." reports Engadget: "The idea is that you could take the car on long roadtrips because it isn't dependent on charging infrastructure the way that traditional electric vehicles like Teslas are. The solar panels add an additional charge of up to 12 km/hour (7.5 miles/hour)." "The reservation fee for one of the first 500 cars is a hefty €119,000, equivalent to $135,000, and delivery isn't expected until 2021. This makes the Lightyear more of a purchasable concept than a production vehicle. But if you've got a spare few hundred thousand dollars lying around and you want to help Lightyear publicly test their first production car, now you have another option for environmentally friendly transport." the Verge says: "It will support up to 60kW of fast charging, giving it 507 km of range per hour of charge. The car has a total of four electric motors, which will allow it to accelerate from 0 to 100 kmh in 10 seconds. Lightyear was founded by a group of former University of Eindhoven students who won the World Solar Challenge race with their “Stella” solar cars." Lightyear Says: "“Unlike conventional solar panels, our cells function independently. This means that even if part of the roof or hood is in shadow, the other cells continue to efficiently collect solar energy. In fact, our solar cells provide about 20% more energy than traditional ones.” https://www.engadget.com/2019/06/25/solar-powered-car-lightyear-one/ https://newdawn.lightyear.one/ TESLA TO OFFER COLLISION REPAIR AT SERVICE CENTERS AND THROUGH MOBILE SERVICE "Tesla’s Mobile Service and Service Centers are now performing on-site and in-house collision repairs to include paint scuffs, scratches, minor dents, and bolt-on replacements such as bumpers, fenders, doors, and side mirrors. Moving to expand repairs done directly by Tesla ensures quality work, quick service, and transparent pricing for owners of its all-electric vehicles." according to Teslarati: "These latest options can be scheduled using the Tesla app via the “Collision Repair” option under the Service menu." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-collision-repair-bodyshop-mobile-service-centers/ THE NEW LOTUS ELECTRIC HYPERCAR COULD BE CALLED 'EVIJA' "When Lotus first unveiled its plans for an all-new, all-electric hypercar back in April, code named Type 130, a good number of you balked at the name. Don’t expect that to stick around, though. The car will almost certainly bear a name-name, and it could very well be the Lotus Evija." says Jalopnik: "The Lotus Evija makes sense, too, as all of Lotus’s cars have begun with the letter “E” since 1956, according to Auto Express. Examples include the Esprit, Evora, Elise, Exige and Elan. " https://jalopnik.com/the-new-lotus-electric-hypercar-could-be-called-evija-1835834459 2019 NISSAN LEAF E+ PRICED FROM £35,895 IN THE UK Prices for the new range-topping Nissan LEAF e+ Tekna start from £35,895, including the £3,500 Government Grant. With the Nissan LEAF e+, the newly-developed 62kWh battery pack offers 55% more capacity and approximately 25% improvement in energy density while retaining a similar shape and size to the 40kWh LEAF battery pack. This has given the LEAF e+ a significantly increased driving range of up to 239 miles (WLTP combined mode) on a single battery charge. Nissan PR says: "Fine-tuned since the launch of the original LEAF in 2011, an internal thermal management system is also installed in every LEAF, ensuring that fast charging performance is optimised for specific driving conditions. The system also ensures that the quality and longevity of the battery is maximised, giving customers peace of mind and high levels of performance" COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 28th March 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. A developing story today in the UK. You know I talk about the carrot and the stick, in terms of what is needed to persuade people into EVs? We have the carrot here in the UK with £3500 off a new EV, but I also talk about the success of Norway using the stick. Hitting people with penalties to buy fossil cars. Now today in the UK there's a story about putting up tax on petrol to push people into considering alternatives. More tomorrow. DAIMLER, GEELY CREATE 50:50 JOINT VENTURE TO DEVELOP SMART The Daimler-owned Smart brand is something which hasn't been a huge commercial success and yet they've kept investing in it, and more recently, electrifying it. Most famous for making small cars it is being given a new lease of life. "Daimler is willing to give the brand another shot by teaming up with Lotus and Volvo owner Geely to transform Smart into a pure EV brand. Announced today, the deal involving Daimler and Geely represents a 50:50 joint venture in China where a new factory will be built to handle production of zero-emissions models." Says Adrian Padeanu for Motor1.com today: "These future cars will be styled by Mercedes and engineered by Geely, with the first models scheduled to hit the market globally from 2022. Interestingly, aside from ditching combustion engines altogether, the Smart brand will expand into the B-segment, which means the next decade will bring us subcompact cars from a brand exclusively known for its cutesy A-segment cars." Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, said: “For more than 2.2 million customers, smart represents a pioneer in urban mobility. Based on this success story, we look forward to further enhancing the brand with Geely Holding, a strong partner in the electric vehicle segment. We will jointly design and develop the next generation of smart electric cars that combine high-quality production and known safety standards for sale both in China and globally." https://www.motor1.com/news/315724/daimler-geely-joint-venture-smart/ BMW WILL BUILD MINI ELECTRIC IN UK DESPITE BREXIT CONCERNS "Despite a number of carmakers saying that they’ll pull out of Britain when Brexit eventually happens BMW is pushing ahead with plans to produce the all-electric Mini over here. According to Automotive News Europe, BMW isn’t planning to implement any major changes to any of its plans in the UK – including the Oxford factory which is earmarked for electric Mini assembly." reports InsideEVs.com today: "The manufacturer is anticipating zero to five percent tariffs on goods if Britain leaves the EU without a deal, something that “won’t change Mini’s business model”. However, BMW’s chief executive officer Harald Krueger has warned that BMW could still move production to countries like the Netherlands at some point in the future should problems arise further down the line. The first electric Mini has been slated to begin production this year, and will become available worldwide, including the US where there is a possibility the brand could become electric-only in the coming years in a bid to boost sales." https://insideevs.com/bmw-build-mini-electric-uk/ SMOKING BMW I8 DUMPED IN WATER BY FIREFIGHTERS A tweet from the Fire Department in the Netherlands: "This morning an electric car started to smoke in a showroom. The employees of the garage and the fire brigade acted quickly to drive the car outside. Because it is an electric car, inventive action was necessary. The car is immersed in a container of water because extinguishing it in the 'normal' way is difficult with these cars. The car will remain in the water basin for the next 24 hours." Chris Bruce at Motor1 raises a good point though: "What's not clear is whether this is the fire department's usual reaction to an electrified vehicle fire. Traveling with a crane and giant water tank doesn't seem very convenient. Plus, if the BMW were already in flames, picking it up and placing the coupe into container doesn't seem safe. R will take on another special challenge in September 2019. Romain Dumas (F) will be back at the wheel of the 500-kW electric sports car for the “China Challenge” on the Tianmen Shan Big Gate Road – a unique stretch of tarmac, featuring 99 corners, which winds its way up Tianmen Mountain, located roughly 1,500 kilometres southwest of Beijing. As no official record exists for the eleven-kilometre mountain road, which is not accessible to public transport, Volkswagen China will run a competition prior to the record attempt, in which participants can set their own virtual time on the Tianmen Shan Big Gate Road. Dumas will then attempt to better the time of the fastest participant under real conditions in September. The Volkswagen ID. R, with which Romain Dumas set records at two famous hill climbs in June 2018 – first at the “Pikes Peak International Hill Climb” and then at the “Goodwood Festival of Speed” – is powered by two electric engines generating a total output of 500 kW (680 PS) and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.25 seconds. Before travelling to China in September, Dumas and the record-breaking ID. R will first set their sights on a new lap record for electric cars on the famous Nürburgring-Nordschleife. FIRST MERCEDES-BENZ ECITARO STARTS SERVICE IN BERLIN "Berlin Transport Authority (BVG) has received the first out of 15 ordered all-electric Mercedes-Benz eCitaro buses." reports InsideEVs.com: "The other thing is that Mercedes-Benz eCitaro currently is equipped with batteries of 243 kWh, which is enough only for 150 km (93 miles)." It's good news, but here's the context: Last autumn, BVG placed an order for up to 950 low-emission Mercedes‑Benz Citaro buses. It is the largest single order ever for Europe’s best-selling city bus. At almost the same time, BVG also ordered 15 fully-electric eCitaro buses. https://insideevs.com/mercedes-benz-ecitaro-berlin/ TESLA'S MUSK POKES FUN AT RAM TRUCKS 'PUNY' TOWING ABILITY Dodge Ram Owner @RamLover69 You would still be physically fatigued if you tried to haul 12,000 lbs of steel beams like I do every day with my Dodge Ram, 2019s motor trend truck of the year. @elonmusk 12,000 lbs!? SEAT ELECTRIC STRATEGY INCLUDSE SIX ELECTRIC The electric version of the Mii and el-Born will be the brand’s first two fully electric models, while the new generation Leon and the Tarraco will feature a plug-in hybrid version. Furthermore, the CUPRA Leon and the CUPRA Formentor will also have a plug-in hybrid variant. SEAT President Luca de Meo also announced today at the company’s annual media conference that the CUPRA Formentor, the new CUV that was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, will be built at the Martorell factory. For the first time in the history of the company, SEAT will develop a new vehicle platform in collaboration with the Volkswagen brand, a smaller version of the Modular Electric Drive Toolkit (MEB) on which multiple vehicles of the size of around four metres in length by different brands, SEAT among them, will be made. The goal of the new platform is to develop affordable electric vehicles, with an entry level price below 20,000 euros. More than 300 highly skilled engineers will be participating in this project in Spain. https://www.seat-mediacenter.com/newspage/allnews/company/2019/SEAT-will-launch-six-electric-and-plug-in-hybrid-models-and-develop-a-new-platform-in-Spain-for-electric-vehicles.html GAC AION S IS EQUIPPED WITH 58.8 KWH CATL NCM 811 BATTERY "The GAC New Energy Automobile Co., Ltd. (GAC NE), the newest arm of GAC, recently announced specifications for the upcoming Aion S all-electric sedan, scheduled for market launch in China in May 2019." reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "The car, which was by GAC compared to the Tesla Model 3, is equipped with the latest NCM 811 battery cells supplied by CATL. The total capacity is 58.8 kWh, which should be enough for 510 km (317 miles) under NEDC. In the real world, we would expect more than 350 km (218 miles) of range." https://insideevs.com/gac-aion-s-58-8-kwh-catl-ncm-811-battery/ RENAULT SEEKS MERGER WITH NISSAN AND FCA Partnerships among the world’s automakers appear to be increasing, be it a win-win collaboration on technology or a full-blown merger. The latest report from Automotive News Europe suggests the latter, this time between Renault and Nissan that would eventually include Fiat Chrysler Automobiles as well. The information comes from a report in Financial Times (subscription required) that cites anonymous sources allegedly in the know about the deal on both sides of the fence." according to Motor1.com: "During the tenure of FCA’s former boss Sergio Marchionne, there were more than a few rumors regarding mergers and purchases, primarily with Chinese automakers. This new report speaks of a freshly merged Renault-Nissan company seeking to acquire FCA as well, ultimately creating a large corporation with enough clout to compete with the likes of Toyota and Volkswagen. In this scenario from Finacial Times, a Renault-Nissan alliance would go after FCA within 12 months" https://www.motor1.com/news/315686/renault-seeks-merger-nissan-fca/ And finally thanks to Fredrik who sent me a link to a site which tracks the VIN numbers and registrations in Norway...
