As an 8-year-old, Pastor Don Wickstrum ("Fastest Pastor") had a dream to race in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb after seeing Bobby Unser do it on TV.  Despite his dream, Don eventually created one of the largest robotic integrators in the country.In 2018, Don received a doctor's report that no one wants to hear—colon cancer. His doctor advised Don to step away from his business to extend his life. The diagnosis would put Don on a new journey with purpose and fulfillment. This former atheist accepted Jesus Christ with a new perspective on his life. Whatever Don was going to do, it would include serving God because of his deep understanding of who he was in Christ.A friend encouraged Don to pursue his dream. After he and his wife sought God's direction, Don's childhood dream would come to true. Eventually, the multimedia company “I Am Second”, founded by Norm Miller, would document Don's story in a movie called, “Chasing Hope.” The film follows Don as he shares the Hope of Jesus Christ on and off the track. Don will race again on June 25, 2023. He will race 12.42 miles that day complete with 156 turns. Ray Evernham has more than four decades of experience in the automotive and racing industries. He has worked with the biggest names in motorsport history, including Gordon, Andretti, Foyt and Earnhardt, was a vital force in resurrecting the International Race of Champions (IROC) series, won three NASCAR Sprint Cup championships as a crew chief for Jeff Gordon, and partnered with Dodge to build Evernham Motorsports into one of the most successful teams in NASCAR. Evernham has also held many roles in the television industry, including serving as a NASCAR analyst for SPEED, ESPN, ABC, FOX and NBC and hosting his own television series, AmeriCarna, on the Velocity channel. He also served as voice talent and a consultant for Pixar's Cars 3. In January of 2018, Ray received the most significant honor of his career when he was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. ​ Currently, Evernham hosts the television series Glory Road on NBCSN, participates in several racing events as a driver, restores classic cars and vintage race cars through his company Big Iron Garage, and is the CEO and majority owner of JRi Shocks. Two of Ray's most notable accomplishments of recent include winning his class in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb with his custom-built race car nicknamed "The Ghost" and claiming Best in Class at the historic Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance with his 1965 Brawner Hawk IndyCar, which Mario Andretti drove to his first IndyCar race and championship wins. ​ In addition, Ray is very active with his foundation, Evernham Family – Racing for a Reason, which funds a community center in Davidson, NC for young adults with high-functioning Autism or Asperger's Syndrome called IGNITE.

In this special bonus episode we sat down at our rented AirBnB the night before heading up the mountain to watch the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. We had no idea what was in store for us the next day, or what a crazy event the 100th running would be.

The Unser family have been intertwined with Pikes Peak for over 100 years and have dominated America's to the clouds from generation to generation. Later this month, on June 26th, 2022, competitors from all over the world will come together in Colorado Springs, CO for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. This, America's second oldest auto race, has been running for over 100 years, encompassing a course that's 12.42-miles in length, with 156 turns, and that takes competitors to an altitude of 14,115-feet. This is not an event for the faint of heart or for those with a weak constitution for risk, but instead, the hill climb pits some of the best drivers and vehicles on the planet against eachother to see who can reach the peak the quickest. As a competitor since 2016, Kevin Wesley of Wesley Motorsports is no stranger to running Pikes Peak, which is why he's back as a guest on this weeks Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ podcast. The Texan astrophysicist Kathy Mead competed in the legendary "Pikes Peak International Hill Climb" for the first time in 2020 – at the age of 61. he Porsche community is full of remarkable characters, none more so than retired astrophysics professor Kathy Mead. The 61-year-old Texan only started racing four years ago, but quickly rose to prominence in 2020 after a stellar debut at the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb. The modest and straight-talking Mead sees her late entry into motorsport neither as unusual nor a disadvantage, however. “There are a lot of what we still call ‘gentleman drivers' in the US,” she says. “Because if you don't get into racing when you're six, then you have to wait until you have the resources to go do it. In my case my first track event was when I was 51. And frankly, I needed some judgement before I put myself in a fast car!”

He's Road Test Editor at Cycle News, which cranks out a new issue every week. Rennie travels the world testing motorcycles, and he writes race coverage, news, and features for the magazine. Rennie is also a motorcycle racer who has competed several times in the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb, where he set the motorcycle record in 2019. Rennie competes in several race series. He campaigns a Pirelli-sponsored Suzuki GSX-R600 in the Chuckwalla Valley Motorcycle Association series. He races the Roland Sands Design Indian Chief in the Super Hooligan National Championship series. And in June he'll get his first opportunity to race in the prestigious Isle of Man TT. If that weren't enough, Rennie is a husband and a father, and his son Harvey was the inspiration for him to write and publish a children's book called “The Big Book of Motorbikes,” which is available through Amazon. Rennie and I had fun recording this episode after riding more than 300 miles at the Suzuki GSX-S1000GT+ press launch and having a few drinks at dinner. We have an unfiltered, uncensored conversation about Rennie growing up in a prominent racing family in Australia, how he became a motojournalist, and what prompted him to move to America.
